Douglas Cazaux Sackman - Orange Empire, California and the Fruits of Eden (2005).jpg

This innovative history of California opens up new vistas on the interrelationship among culture, nature, and society by focusing on the state's signature export--the orange. From the 1870s onward, California oranges were packaged in crates bearing colorful images of an Edenic landscape. This book demystifies those lush images, revealing the orange as a manufactured product of the state's orange industry. Orange Empire brings together for the first time the full story of the orange industry--how growers, scientists, and workers transformed the natural and social landscape of California, turning it into a factory for the production of millions of oranges. That industry put up billboards in cities across the nation and placed enticing pictures of sun-kissed fruits into nearly every American's home. It convinced Americans that oranges could be consumed as embodiments of pure nature and talismans of good health. But, as this book shows, the tables were turned during the Great Depression when Upton Sinclair, Carey McWilliams, Dorothea Lange, and John Steinbeck made the Orange Empire into a symbol of what was wrong with America's relationship to nature.

Richard J. Orsi - Sunset Limited, The Southern Pac ific Railroad and the Development of the American West, 1850-1930 (2005).jpg

01 - USA1 - Richard J. Orsi - Sunset Limited, The Southern Pacific... the Development of the American West, 1850-1930 2005.jpg

The only major U.S. railroad to be operated by westerners and the only railroad built from west to east, the Southern Pacific acquired a unique history and character. It also acquired a reputation, especially in California, as a railroad that people loved to hate. This magisterial history tells the full story of the Southern Pacific for the first time, shattering myths about the company that have prevailed to this day. A landmark account, Sunset Limited explores the railroad's development and influence--especially as it affected land settlement, agriculture, water policy, and the environment--and offers a new perspective on the tremendous, often surprising, role the company played in shaping the American West.
Based on his unprecedented and extensive research into the company's historical archives, Richard Orsi finds that, contrary to conventional understanding, the Southern Pacific Company identified its corporate well-being with population growth and social and economic development in the railroad's hinterland. As he traces the complex and shifting intersections between corporate and public interest, Orsi documents the railroad's little-known promotion of land distribution, small-scale farming, scientific agriculture, and less wasteful environmental practices and policies--including water conservation and wilderness and recreational parklands preservation.
Meticulously researched, lucidly written, and judiciously balanced, Sunset Limited opens a new window onto the American West in a crucial phase of its development and will forever change our perceptions of one of the largest and most important western corporations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Maurer Maurer - Aviation in the United States Army 1919-1939 (1987).jpg

Historians generally agree that the birth of American air power occurred in the two decades between the world wars, when airmen in the U. S. Army and Navy forged the aircraft, the organization, the cadre of leadership, and the doctrines that formed a foundation for the country to win the air war in World War II. Nearly every scholarly study of this era focuses on these developments, or upon the aircraft of the period; very few works describe precisely what the flyers were doing and how they overcame the difficulties they faced in creating air forces. In this detailed, comprehensive volume, Dr. Maurer Maurer, retired senior historian of the United States Air Force Historical Research Center, fills this void for land-based aviation.

Deborah Welch Larson - Anatomy of Mistrust, U.S.-S oviet Relations During the Cold War (1997).jpg

Professor Larson is a gifted author who has meticulously combed through literally hundreds of sources to illuminate a pattern of foreign policy frequently characterized by mistrust, and, more importantly, missed opportunities. This book should not be mistaken for a revisionist historian's attempt to re-write the past with the advantage of hindsight. Further scrutiny will reveal it to be a compelling depiction of world events through the lens of social psychology. World leaders are human and humans make decisions both rational, based on facts and logic, and sometimes irrational, based on schemas and episodic scripts. For those interested in the history and psychology of the decisions that led up to the Cold War, check out this author's earlier work, Origins of Containment

Laura Pulido - Black, Brown, Yellow, and Left, Rad ical Activism in Los Angeles (2006).jpg

Laura Pulido traces the roots of third world radicalism in Southern California during the 1960s and 1970s in this accessible, wonderfully illustrated comparative study. Focusing on the Black Panther Party, El Centro de AcciA?n Social y Autonomo (CASA), and East Wind, a Japanese American collective, she explores how these African American, Chicana/o, and Japanese American groups sought to realize their ideas about race and class, gender relations, and multiracial alliances. Based on thorough research as well as extensive interviews, Black, Brown, Yellow, and Left explores the differences and similarities between these organizations, the strengths and weaknesses of the third world left as a whole, and the ways that differential racialization led to distinct forms of radical politics. Pulido provides a masterly, nuanced analysis of complex political events, organizations, and experiences. She gives special prominence to multiracial activism and includes an engaging account of where the activists are today, together with a consideration of the implications for contemporary social justice organizing.

S. Scott Rohrer - Wandering Souls, Protestant Migr ations in America, 1630-1865 (2010).jpg

Popular literature and frontier studies stress that Americans moved west to farm or to seek a new beginning. Scott Rohrer argues that Protestant migrants in early America relocated in search of salvation, Christian community, reform, or all three.

In Wandering Souls, Rohrer examines the migration patterns of eight religious groups and finds that Protestant migrations consisted of two basic types. The most common type involved migrations motivated by religion, economics, and family, in which Puritans, Methodists, Moravians, and others headed to the frontier as individuals in search of religious and social fulfillment. The other type involved groups wanting to escape persecution (such as the Mormons) or to establish communities where they could practice their faith in peace (such as the Inspirationists). Rohrer concludes that the two migration types shared certain traits, despite the great variety of religious beliefs and experiences, and that "secular" values infused the behavior of nearly all Protestant migrants.

Religion's role in transatlantic migrations is well known, but its importance to the famed mobility of Americans is far less understood. Wandering Souls demonstrates that Protestantism greatly influenced internal migration and the social and economic development of early America.

Trevor Burnard - Mastery, Tyranny, and Desire, Tho mas Thistlewood and His Slaves in the Anglo-Jamaic an World (2003).jpg

01 - USA1 - Trevor Burnard - Mastery, Tyranny, and Desire, Thomas ...lewood and His Slaves in the Anglo-Jamaican World 2003.jpg

Eighteenth-century Jamaica, Britain's largest and most valuable slave-owning colony, relied on a brutal system of slave management to maintain its tenuous social order. Trevor Burnard provides unparalleled insight into Jamaica's vibrant but harsh African and European cultures with a comprehensive examination of the extraordinary diary of plantation owner Thomas Thistlewood.
Thistlewood's diary, kept over the course of forty years, describes in graphic detail how white rule over slaves was predicated on the infliction of terror on the bodies and minds of slaves. Thistlewood treated his slaves cruelly even while he relied on them for his livelihood. Along with careful notes on sugar production, Thistlewood maintained detailed records of a sexual life that fully expressed the society's rampant sexual exploitation of slaves. In Burnard's hands, Thistlewood's diary reveals a great deal not only about the man and his slaves but also about the structure and enforcement of power, changing understandings of human rights and freedom, and connections among social class, race, and gender, as well as sex and sexuality, in the plantation system.

Tom Carlson - Hatteras Blues, A Story from the Edg e of America (2008).jpg

The "blues" in this book's title refers both to blue-water fishing--for blue marlin, striped bass, and other deep-sea fish--and to the blues that come from personal loss. Carlson wrote this memoir to help him deal with grief over his wife's death and to celebrate the fishermen of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, a resilient but besieged community, constantly at risk from real-estate development and the hazards of life on the water. The text weaves together information about the history of the Outer Banks and the fishing there as well as such related topics as geology, hurricanes, lifesaving, and lighthouses. He focuses on the Fosters of the village of Hatteras, whose patriarch, Ernal, introduced many of the inventions and innovations that make the Outer Banks a popular fishing destination. His sketches of the Fosters and others capture the wit, character, and bravery of Hatteras people in a manner that is intimate and insightful without being intrusive.

Julia Sun-Joo Lee - The American Slave Narrative and the Victorian Novel (2010).jpg

Conceived as a literary form to aggressively publicize the abolitionist cause in the United States, the African American slave narrative remains a powerful and illuminating demonstration of America's dark history. Yet the genre's impact extended far beyond the borders of the U.S. In a period when few books sold more than five hundred copies, slave narratives sold in the tens of thousands, providing British readers vivid accounts of the violence and privation experienced by American slaves. Eloquent, bracing narratives by Frederick Douglass, William Box Brown, Solomon Northrop, and others enjoyed unprecedented popularity, captivating audiences that included activists, journalists, and some of the era's greatest novelists.

The American Slave Narrative and the Victorian Novel investigates the shaping influence of the American slave narrative on the Victorian novel in the years between the British Abolition Act and the American Emancipation Proclamation. The book argues that Charlotte Brontë, W. M. Thackeray, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens, and Fanny and Robert Louis Stevenson integrated into their works generic elements of the slave narrative-from the emphasis on literacy as a tool of liberation, to the teleological journey from slavery to freedom, to the ethics of resistance over submission. It contends that Victorian novelists used these tropes in an attempt to access the slave narrative's paradigm of resistance, illuminate the transnational dimension of slavery, and articulate Britain's role in the global community. Through a deft use of disparate sources, Lee reveals how the slave narrative becomes part of the textual network of the English novel, making visible how black literary, as well as economic, production contributed to English culture.

Lucidly written, richly researched, and cogently argued, Julia Sun-Joo Lee's insightful monograph makes an invaluable contribution to scholars of American literary history, African American literature, and the Victorian novel, in addition to highlighting the vibrant transatlantic exchange of ideas that illuminated literatures on both sides of the Atlantic during the nineteenth century.

Carolyn L. Kitch - The Girl on the Magazine Cover, The Origins of Visual Stereotypes in American Mas s Media (2000).jpg

01 - USA1 - Carolyn L. Kitch - The Girl on the Magazine Cover, The...ins of Visual Stereotypes in American Mass Media 2000.jpg

It seems that each time the American woman begins to veer toward feminism, mainstream magazines put her back in her "proper" place, portraying her as wife, mother, and consumer. Kitch (journalism, Temple Univ.) traces the early development of this trend, beginning in the 1890s with Alice Barber Stephens's "American Woman" series and ending 30 years later with the ideal families depicted by Norman Rockwell and Jessie Willcox Smith. In between, she considers such influential icons as the flapper, the vamp, the nurse, the "girl graduate," and Charles Dana Gibson's eponymous representation of womanhood, who is tellingly called a girl, not a woman. Kitch places each of these stereotypes in context, not just historically but also within the avowed agenda of the artist or editor. In the last chapter, she discusses the dual role of prominent illustrators who worked simultaneously for magazines and advertisers; this shared imagery, Kitch asserts, "created a blueprint for the routine blurring of editorial and advertising messages in mass media." This engaging, insightful study is recommended for most libraries.

Jane Dailey - Before Jim Crow, The Politics of Rac e in Postemancipation Virginia (2000).jpg

Long before the Montgomery bus boycott ushered in the modern civil rights movement, black and white southerners struggled to forge interracial democracy in America. This innovative book examines the most successful interracial coalition in the nineteenth-century South, Virginia's Readjuster Party, and uncovers a surprising degree of fluidity in postemancipation southern politics.
Melding social, cultural, and political history, Jane Dailey chronicles the Readjusters' efforts to foster political cooperation across the color line. She demonstrates that the power of racial rhetoric, and the divisiveness of racial politics, derived from the everyday experiences of individual Virginians--from their local encounters on the sidewalk, before the magistrate's bench, in the schoolroom. In the process, she reveals the power of black and white southerners to both create and resist new systems of racial discrimination. The story of the Readjusters shows how hard white southerners had to work to establish racial domination after emancipation, and how passionately black southerners fought each and every infringement of their rights as Americans.
