Eboo Patel - Acts of Faith, The Story of an Americ an Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generati on (2007).jpg

01 - USA1 - Eboo Patel - Acts of Faith, The Story of an American M...Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation 2007.jpg

“Acts of Faith, a beautifully written story of discovery and hope, chronicles Dr. Eboo Patel’s struggle to forge his identity as a Muslim, an Indian, and an American. In the process, he developed a deep reverence for what all faiths have in common, and founded an interfaith movement to help young people to embrace their common humanity through their faith. This young social entrepreneur offers us a powerful way to deal with one of the most important issues of our time.” —President Bill Clinton
The lessons we learn when we are young, Eboo Patel writes, determine the commitments we carry the rest of our lives. Even so, many organizations only pay lip service to the importance of youth programs; few devote substantial time and effort to them.
But there is a segment of our world that fully understands that young people are a combustible combination of power and fragility. Preachers in the bigotry-driven Christian Identity movement pay special attention to young people. Yitzhak Rabin’s assassin was a twenty-five-year-old observant Jew. Muslim extremists run madrasas with the clear-cut goal of teaching youth that violence is the answer. Youth programs are the focus of the institutions created by these religious totalitarians and at the center of their strategies. All too often, young people are the perpetrators of the devastating acts of violence that define these groups.
Acts of Faith interweaves accounts of how religious totalitarian groups engage youth with Patel’s own story of growing up Muslim and angry in America. His unique understanding of the importance of positively engaging religious youth led him to found the Interfaith Youth Core, an energetic organization that seeks to counter religious totalitarianism by building an interfaith, pluralistic youth movement. Addressing the key questions of this emerging movement, Patel shows us how to engage religious conservatives and, most importantly, how to positively focus the fires of youth.
“Eboo Patel is an exciting new voice of a new America. Diverse but not divisive, hopeful but not utopian. He is an American Indian whose roots are not in South Dakota but in South Asia, and he speaks for all of us from a rising generation of bright, brown and bold Americans who have much to offer a country embarking on a new millennium and in need of new blood.” —Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, executive director of the Zaytuna Institute
“Eboo Patel has crafted an elegantly written and brilliantly argued manifesto -- a call to arms, really -- about the importance, not of interfaith dialogue, but of interfaith cooperation. His thesis is simple: children are not born to hate; hatred is taught to them. And in a time when religion is used increasingly to justify bigotry and violence, it is up to people of faith everywhere who believe in peace, and tolerance, and pluralism, to stand up to those who preach hatred in the name of God. Acts of Faith is more than a book, it is an awakening of the mind. It should be required reading for all Americans.” —Reza Aslan, author of No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam...

Dick Morris - Off with Their Heads, Traitors, Croo ks, and Obstructionists in American Politics, Medi a, and Business (2004).jpg

01 - USA1 - Dick Morris - Off with Their Heads, Traitors, Crooks, ...onists in American Politics, Media, and Business 2004.jpg

What happened to the unity that so blessed America after 9/11? Where did our sense of determination go?
Our political, journalistic, and cultural leaders have mounted a campaign to oppose and impede the war on terror that seemed so vital in that rare moment of clarity. This book is my personal cri du coeur about deception in politics, journalism, and business -- especially when it stops us from following through on the work 9/11 has left for us all to do.
This book takes on some pretty sacred cows, but it's about time they became fair game. --from the Introduction
Are you appalled by the antiwar tone the news media has taken since the war on terror began -- especially "objective" news outlets like the New York Times and the network news?
Are you wondering when liberal celebrities like Barbara Streisand, Sean Penn, and Susan Sarandon suddenly became geopolitical oracles whose advice we're supposed to value above the wisdom of tenured experts?
Are you at a loss to decide who has betrayed us more outrageously: the French who abandoned us in our time of need, or our own elected officials, who tapped our 401(k) savings and the tobacco-settlement windfall with equal abandon?
In Off with Their Heads, syndicated columnist and Fox News Cannel political analyst Dick Morris points an accusing finger at the many ways the public has been lied to and misled, pickpocketed and endangered. Whether it's Bill Clinton, who ignored mounting evidence of impending terrorist catastrophe throughout the 1990s, or the members of Congress, who quietly sold our democracy down the river in exchange for lifetime incumbency, Morris rips the cover off the cowardly and duplicitous figures who have sacrificed America's interests for their own.
From private corruption to public treachery, even longtime political buffs will marvel at the astonishing behavior Morris reveals at every level of society -- and at how it threatens to compromise the American way of life.

Norman J. Ornstein, Thomas E. Mann, Michael J. Mal bi - Vital Statistics on Congress 2008 (2008).jpg

Vital Statistics on Congress remains the quintessential source of authoritative information on America's legislature. This important series tracks the elements that define and describe Congress in the post-World War II era, and in this new edition, three of America's most esteemed political analysts extend their examination through the 109th Congress. They combine historical context with insightful analysis and copious data to produce a valuable and authoritative picture of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Norman Ornstein, Thomas Mann, and Michael Malbin track the changing makeup of Congress through history and across several dimensions, such as region, party, occupation, religion, committee assignments, staff size, and political stances. They document trends in critical areas such as voter turnout, ticket splitting, incumbency and turnover, and margin of victory. The authors, acknowledged experts in campaign finance, provide detailed information on candidate, party, and PAC spending. The material presented in Vital Statistics on Congress 2008 reveals a fascinating and important picture of America's chosen representatives, as politicians and as people. It will be an important addition to the bookshelves of media, political professionals, scholars and their students, and political junkies everywhere.

Bruce L. R. Smith, Jeremy D. Mayer, A. Lee Fritsch ler - Closed Minds, Politics and Ideology in Ameri can Universities (2008).jpg

01 - USA1 - Bruce L. R. Smith, Jeremy D. Mayer, A. Lee Fritschler ...s, Politics and Ideology in American Universities 2008.jpg

Contrary to popular belief, the problem with U.S. higher education is not too much politics but too little. Far from being bastions of liberal bias, American universities have largely withdrawn from the world of politics. So conclude Bruce L. R. Smith, Jeremy Mayer, and Lee Fritschler in this illuminating book. Closed Minds? draws on data from interviews, focus groups, and a new national survey by the authors, as well as their decades of experience in higher education to paint the most comprehensive picture to date of campus political attitudes. It finds that while liberals outnumber conservatives within faculty ranks, even most conservatives believe that ideology has little impact on hiring and promotion. Today's students are somewhat more conservative than their professors, but few complain of political bias in the classroom. Similarly, a Pennsylvania legislative inquiry, which the authors explore as a case study of conservative activism in higher education, found that political bias was "rare" in the state's public colleges and universities. Yet this ideological peace on campus has been purchased at a high price. American universities are rarely hospitable to lively discussions of issues of public importance. They largely shun serious political debate, all but ignore what used to be called civics, and take little interest in educating students to be effective citizens. Smith, Mayer, and Fritschler contrast the current climate of disengagement with the original civic mission of American colleges and universities. In concluding, they suggest how universities can reclaim and strengthen their place in the nation's political and civic life.

Howard Schaffer - The Limits of Influence, America 's Role in Kashmir (2009).jpg

This is the first systematic history of U.S. efforts to help forge a settlement between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir question. Former ambassador Howard B. Schaffer draws on interviews with senior American officials, historical research, and his decades of experience in South Asia to explain and evaluate three generations of U.S. activities and policies toward the volatile region. "The Limits of Influence" chronicles America's views on-and involvement in-the long-standing struggle waged between India and Pakistan over Kashmir since their independence in 1947. He brings the discussion up to the current day, concluding with recommendations on the role Washington might usefully play in resolving the long-simmering dispute, thus reducing the dangerous tensions between two nuclear-armed archrivals in a region of great importance. His book is a fascinating piece of diplomatic history as well as an instructive look at the present and future of the Kashmir dilemma and its impact on vital U.S. concerns.

Elizabeth A. Ford, Deborah C. Mitchell - Royal Por traits in Hollywood, Filming the Lives of Queens ( 2009).jpg

In the history of cinema, many film genres have gained and lost popularity with the changing times, but one has maintained its supreme reign -- the royal biopic. In Royal Portraits in Hollywood: Filming the Lives of Queens, authors Elizabeth A. Ford and Deborah C. Mitchell follow the lives of historical queens as depicted on film from the 1930s to the present. Women as diverse as Catherine the Great, Cleopatra, Mary Stuart, and Marie Antoinette have been represented on the silver screen, dominating the masculine world of politics while maintaining their femininity. During the golden age of American film, these roles gave Hollywood a means of portraying powerful women without threatening the patriarchal social order. Depictions of the lives of queens have progressed from idealized and romanticized portraits to the more personal, complex portrayals of modern Hollywood. By walking the line between fact and fiction, these royal portraits of queens reveal just as much our society as they do about the historical periods they represent. Audiences are drawn to the theaters year after year because the lives of queens promise good drama and attract some of the most talented actresses. The success of Hollywood's leading ladies in playing queens further solidifies the link between Hollywood royalty and authentic royalty. Actresses such as Bette Davis, Judy Dench, Helen Mirren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Greta Garbo have done more than influence the way we imagine historical queens -- they also have changed how we perceive women in powerful positions today. Royal Portraits in Hollywood analyzes seventy-five years of films about queens as well as the lives of the actresses who starred in them. Combining biographical sketches and excerpts from letters and journals, Ford and Mitchell show how filmmaking and our society's perceptions of gender have changed. The authors compare Hollywood's on-screen portrayals to the historical records, often drawing connections to the actresses' careers and personal lives. This comprehensive analysis provides a more complete picture of the lives that take place behind the thrones -- both real and fictional. The spectacle of a woman dressed in the full regalia of power remains a compelling image in our society. Hollywood actresses and the queens they portray are women who wield power, and by examining the lives of these women, the authors reveal not only society's perceptions about female power but also how those perceptions continue to evolve.

Alison Turnbull Kelley - First to Arrive, Firefigh ters at Ground Zero (2002).jpg

1. Engaging writing chronicles the activities and heroism of the various organizations and groups that responded to the terrifying and tragic events of September 11"th" and gives the reader a real sense of the power inherent in the human will and spirit.
2. "Eyewitness to Terror" boxes provide the reader with real-life accounts of what it was like to be in and around the area of the World Trade Center on September 11"th."
3. "Tools of the Trade" boxes provide the reader with a closer look at some of the special equipment and tools used by the various organizations covered in the series -- e.g., firefighters, police, etc.
Gr 5-7-These representatives of a multivolume series combine superficial treatments of narrow topics, thinly disguised padding, recycled information, and signs of careless editing. In First to Arrive, only the first and last of the seven chapters deal with events on or following September 11; the rest is a skimpy overview of the history of firefighting in America, plus a modern firefighter's training and special equipment. Helping Hands, the best of the lot, stays on topic with general accounts of government, corporate, and personal efforts to assist rescue workers and victims in the disaster's immediate wake. However, some of its claims, such as the assertion that steel softens at a higher temperature than it melts, or that President Bush "emerged as a strong and confident leader" in the wake of the attacks, are, at best, debatable. Similarly, though We the People is balanced enough to take note of protests to the federal government's sweeping post-9/11 assaults on civil liberties, Valdez's belief that the anthrax letters were "the first fatal instance of biological terrorism on U.S. soil" ignores, for instance, the smallpox and other epidemics that wiped out entire tribes of Native Americans in centuries past. All three titles feature occasional small color photos. Considering how thoroughly the territory is being mined, libraries should gauge local demand carefully, and if possible wait for more considered accounts of the 2001 attacks' aftermath.-John Peters, New York Public Library

America s wonderful, messy experiment with a republican form of democracy is a work in progress, an unfolding story of astonishing possibilities and periodic disappointment. The storyline of this new century is the yawning chasm between the passion that Americans, particularly young people, have for a fair and just society, with the reality of near permanent incumbency for elected officials and a gridlocked political system.

01 - USA1 - Charles Redman, David R. Foster - Agrarian Landscapes ...arisons of Long-Term Ecological Cultural Change 2008.jpg

Agrarian Landscapes in Transition researches human interaction with the earth. With hundreds of acres of agricultural land going out of production every day, the introduction, spread, and abandonment of agriculture represents the most pervasive alteration of the Earth's environment for several thousand years. What happens when humans impose their spatial and temporal signatures on ecological regimes, and how does this manipulation affect the earth and nature's desire for equilibrium?
Studies were conducted at six Long Term Ecological Research sites within the US, including New England, the Appalachian Mountains, Colorado, Michigan, Kansas, and Arizona. While each site has its own unique agricultural history, patterns emerge that help make sense of how our actions have affected the earth, and how the earth pushes back. The book addresses how human activities influence the spatial and temporal structures of agrarian landscapes, and how this varies over time and across biogeographic regions. It also looks at the ecological and environmental consequences of the resulting structural changes, the human responses to these changes, and how these responses drive further changes in agrarian landscapes.
The time frames studied include the ecology of the earth before human interaction, pre-European human interaction during the rise and fall of agricultural land use, and finally the biological and cultural response to the abandonment of farming, due to complete abandonment or a land-use change such as urbanization.

The six pioneers profiled here were promising graduates of the Wright Brothers' School of Aviation, which flourished in Ohio from 1910 to 1916. These airmen fairly represent their 113 fellow alumni in their all-consuming love of flying.
The pilots are Arthur L. Welsh, a Russian immigrant who rose to become Orville Wright's chief instructor; Howard Warfield Gill, heir to an international tea dynasty; Archibald Freeman, whose flour-bag bombing of Boston Harbor won him attention as an early exponent of the supremacy of air power; Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, whose promise as a pilot quickly soured; George A. Gray, whose marriage resulted in an extraordinary husband and wife exhibition team; and Howard Max Rinehart, aerial mercenary, international racing competitor, Wright test pilot, South American explorer, and co-owner of one of America's premier charter services.

Osprey - Warrior 141 - Edward Young - Merrill’s Ma rauders (2009).jpg

Merrill’s Marauders were the first American Army infantry unit to fight in the China-Burma-India theatre, and one of the most renowned units to come out of World War II. The Marauders established a lasting reputation for hard fighting and tenacity in the face of adversity, combating a determined enemy, some of the most difficult and disease-ridden terrain in the world, and a seemingly indifferent higher command. Pushed beyond the limit of their endurance, at the end of nearly six months of operations behind Japanese lines, the remaining Marauders were withdrawn from combat after suffering over 90% casualties. Because of its courageous actions, the unit received the very rare honour of having every member presented with a Bronze Star for gallantry. This book explores the creation, training and combat experiences of the Marauders, one of the most famous units in the US Army’s roll of honour.

Patricia Grabowski - Anthony Wayne, American Gener al (2001).jpg

Compelling portraits of American history's most notable male and female leaders -- Includes informative sidebars -- Interesting, easy-to-understand content -- Complements school curriculum Follow Wayne's career from its lowest point at the Paoli Massacre to the stunning victory he achieved for the Americans at Stony Point.
Gr 4-6-In these workmanlike biographies, the authors do a competent, if not inspiring job of presenting complex ideas and historical material for an audience with little background knowledge of the topics. The history and achievements of Wayne will be more familiar to children, but there are still many complicated battles and intricacies of power politics among the military leaders. In the case of Kosciuszko, the author must explain the economic, social, and political structure of 18th-century Poland; provide background on the Enlightenment; and describe Kosciuszko's accomplishments as a military engineer, along with his military strategy during the Revolutionary War. The many reproductions and illustrations, in color and black and white, and the few, unclear maps do little to elucidate the texts. The pictures of important contemporaries such as Lord Howe or General Burgoyne will be meaningless to most readers, and there are no diagrams of Wayne's battles or Kosciuszko's fortifications. Although these books are not likely to be used for recreational reading, they might be useful as additional sources for reports.-Marlene Gawron, Orange County Library, Orlando, FL

Rachel A. Koestler-Grack - Stonewall Jackson (2009 ).jpg

Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson was the great-grandson of indentured servants from Ireland who were sentenced to serve time in America for larceny. He began his career in the U.S. Army fighting in the Mexican-American War and later became a teacher. He and his wife owned slaves, and he saw slavery as ordained by God, although he also considered it the slave master's duty to treat servants fairly and humanely at all times. His reputation as a kind slave master meant several slaves asked to be purchased by him at auction. Called to serve in the Civil War in 1861, he excelled during several battles including the First Battle of Bull Run, where he got his nickname, and became one of the most revered Confederate commanders. To this day, his Valley Campaign of 1862 is studied worldwide as an example of innovation and bold leadership. Historians consider Stonewall Jackson to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in United States history.
