John Temple - The Last Lawyer, The Fight to Save D eath Row Inmates (2009).jpg

For years, lawyer Ken Rose has fought to save wrongly-condemned prisoners; chronicling the story of Rose and death row inmate Bo Jones, author Temple (Dollhouse: Life in a Coroner's Office) finds high drama in Raleigh penitentiaries, North Carolina backroads, cramped law offices, and sweltering courtrooms. Investigators, criminals, judges, witnesses, and attorneys are all finely, vividly drawn in this disturbing account of a justice system hijacked by officials whose prime interest is finding criminals to execute: "Even if Bo Jones wasn't one of the worst of the worst, they pursued him because he was one of the ones they could get." Reviewing the original 1987 murder, the consequent trials and endless hearings, Temple creates an intimate portrait of Rose and his Center for Death Penalty Litigation as they trudge through a decade of work on this case, a typical example that pits the odds and public opinion against them: "To question capital punishment was to appear soft on crime... In court, one well known district attorney sported a golden lapel pin shaped like a hangman's noose." Ultimately, Temple's account is a stand-up-and cheer account of one man standing up for justice.

01 - USA1 - Michael S Lief, H. Mitchell Caldwell - The Devils Advo...ates, Greatest Closing Arguments in Criminal Law 2007.jpg

The Final Volume in a Must-Have Trilogy of the Best Closing Arguments in American Legal History
In The Devil's Advocates, Michael S. Lief and H. Mitchell Caldwell turn to the dramatic crimes and trials of criminal law. The eight famous cases in this riveting collection have set historical precedents and illuminated fundamentals of the American criminal justice system. Future president John Adams illustrates the principle that even the most despised and vilified criminal is entitled to a legal defense in the argument he delivers on behalf of the British soldiers who shot and killed five Americans during the Boston Massacre. Clarence Darrow provides a ringing defense of a black family charged with using deadly force after defending themselves from a violent mob - an argument that refines the concept of self-defense. And perhaps the best-known case is that of Ernesto Miranda, the accused rapist whose trial led to the critically important Miranda decision, which underpins procedure at every criminal arrest.
Each case presented is given legal and cultural context, including a brief historical introduction, biographical sketches of the attorneys involved, highlights of trial testimony, analysis of the closing arguments and a summary of the trial's impact on its participants and our country. In clear, jargon-free prose, the authors make these pivotal cases come to vibrant life for every reader.

01 - USA1 - Albert N. Link, Jamie R. Link - Government as Entrepre... Link, Jamie R. Link - Government as Entrepreneur 2009.jpg

Government acts as entrepreneur when its involvement in market activities is both innovative and characterized by entrepreneurial risk. Thinking of government as entrepreneur is a unique lens through which the authors of this book examine a specific subset of U.S. government policy actions. As such, their viewpoint underscores the purposeful intent of government, its ability to act in new and innovative ways, and its willingness to undertake policy actions that have uncertain outcomes.
Viewing particular policy actions through an entrepreneurial lens is useful in two broad dimensions. First, it underscores the forward looking nature of policy makers as well as the need to evaluate the social outputs and outcomes of their behavior in terms of broad spillover impacts. Second, government acting as entrepreneur parallels in concept similar activities that occur in the private sector.
Government as Entrepreneur is the first broad effort to emphasize the entrepreneurial aspects of governments. It is also the first systematic treatment of U.S. innovation policies to promote the formation of strategic research partnerships. It will foster a new perspective on the role of government and how incentives for government to act entrepreneurially might be institutionalized; it will serve as a vehicle for policy makers and scholars to think about the entrepreneurial actors in an economy, in a new way.

Donna Hubbard, Kenneth Terrill Jones, Ann O'Leary - African Americans and HIV-AIDS, Understanding an d Addressing the Epidemic (2010).jpg

01 - USA1 - Donna Hubbard, Kenneth Terrill Jones, Ann OLeary - Afr...V-AIDS, Understanding and Addressing the Epidemic 2010.jpg

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is burgeoning among African American men and women. Despite comprising only 13% of the population, 50% of new HIV diagnoses in 2004 were among African Americans. Among women and men who have sex with men (MSM), African Americans are grossly disproportionately affected by this epidemic, and this trend shows no sign of abating. This book seeks to explore some of the contextual factors that contribute to this disparity as well as ways to intervene to slow the growth of the epidemic in the U.S. This volume will focus on the history and context of HIV/AIDS in African Americans and interventions targeting specific subpopulations including adolescents, heterosexual men and women, men who have sex with men, incarcerated populations, and injection drug users. Context chapters will focus on specific contextual and structural issues related to HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention in African Americans including disparities in incarceration, racism, economic issues and substance abuse. Intervention chapters will focus on best-evidence and promising-evidence based interventions targeting HIV prevention in African Americans. These chapters will address the latest in intervention strategies, program evaluation, cost effectiveness and qualitative research methods and will include risk reduction, risk assessment, and testing and counseling.

01 - USA1 - Edward L. Cleary, Timothy J. Steigenga - Resurgent Voi...les, Political Mobilization, and Religious Change 2003.jpg

"Resurgent Voices in Latin America explores the critical role of religious beliefs and practices played by indigenous organizations in their struggle to redeem their rights and place in the nations of Latin America in which they are encompassed. This important contribution to indigenous studies should be required reading for students concerned with new directions in Latin America."—June Nash, author of Mayan Visions: The Quest for Autonomy in an Age of Globalization.
"Resurgent Voices in Latin America offers a rich, multi-faceted, and innovative approach to the roles religion plays in the emergence and political mobilization of indigenous identities."—Manuel Vásquez, coauthor of Globalizing the Sacred: Religion across the Americas
"This important collection brings fresh data and challenging insights to the analysis of religion and political mobilization among indigenous peoples in Latin America."—Daniel H. Levine, University of Michigan
After more than 500 years of marginalization, Latin America’s forty million Indians have recently made major strides in gaining political recognition and civil rights. In this book, social scientists explore the important role of religion in indigenous activism, showing the ways that religion has strengthened indigenous identity and contributed to the struggle for indigenous rights in the region.
Drawing on case studies from Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Mexico, the contributors explore four key questions. How have traditional religions interacted with Christianity to produce new practices and beliefs? What resources, motivations, and ideological legitimacies do religious institutions provide for indigenous social movements? How effective are these movements in achieving their goals? Finally, as new religious groups continue to compete for adherents in the region, how will individuals’ religious choices affect political outcomes?
Resurgent Voices in Latin America offers new insight into the dynamics of indigenous social movements and into the complex and changing world of Latin American religions. The essays show that religious beliefs, practices, and institutions have both affected and been affected by political activism.

Geoff King - Spectacle of the Real, From Hollywood to 'Reality' TV and Beyond (2005).jpg

Hollywood special effects offer spectacular creations or re-creations that make claims to our attention on the grounds of their ‘incredible-seeming reality’. They can appear both ‘incredible’ and ‘real’, their appeal based on their ability to ‘convince’—to appear real in terms such as detail and texture—and on their status as fabricated spectacle, to be admired as such. At a seemingly very different end of the audio-visual media spectrum, ‘reality’ television offers the spectacle of, supposedly, the ‘real’ itself, a ‘reality’ that ranges from the banality of the quotidian to intense interpersonal engagements (two extremes experienced in Big Brother, for example). The two also overlap, however, nowhere more clearly and jarringly than in the ultimate ‘spectacle of the real’, the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York, live television coverage of which evoked constant comparison with big-screen fictional images.

John A. Arthur - The African Diaspora in the Unite d States and Europe (2008).jpg

Compared to migration from other continents, the voluntary migration of people of African ancestry to America is a recent phenomenon. However, migration from Africa has accelerated dramatically in the last two decades and the group termed by the popular media 'America's newest immigrants' now has a very strong African component. Despite this, existing literature tends to focus first on European migration and more recently on migration from Asia and Latin America. The experiences of new African immigrants living in America have yet to be systematically documented. This book focuses on the Ghanaian community in the US and Canada as a case study of the new African migration. Ghana ranks in the top five of African countries sending immigrants to the North America and the rapid increase in the number of Ghanaians lawfully admitted as permanent residents since 1980 offers an opportunity to investigate their immigrant journeys, the ways they seek membership in the larger society and how they express their individual and collective social identities. A key theme is the relationship between these new African migrants and the native-born black diaspora in the US.The book is based on original empirical data from the US and Canada as well as comparative material from the UK and the Netherlands. The author also investigates return migration to Ghana. The study balances theoretical insight with policy implications, using the case-study as a lens not just on African migration but also on significant conceptual themes in migration studies including transnationalism, identity, social networks, remittances, economic integration and citizenship.

Laura Rich - The Accidental Zillionaire, Demystify ing Paul Allen (2003).jpg

Everyone knows about Bill Gates, the boy-wonder founder of Microsoft and the planet’s richest citizen. Although less well known, Paul Allen helped make Gates’s good fortunes possible, and he's certainly worth study for his mistakes just as much as his many successes.

Enter former Industry Standard reporter Laura Rich, who does little to demystify Allen the man, but paints a useful portrait all the same. Rich takes readers through Allen’s career as an early Gates ally, a technically savvy man who first saw the possibilities of DOS, the operating system that drove a big chunk of the personal computer market, and launched several other software enterprises. Although he left Microsoft owing to illness in 1983 (according to Rich, Gates has behaved badly toward him ever since), Allen is still a major shareholder and has amassed a personal fortune that dwarfs the GNPs of whole nations. As Rich observes, Allen has put this money to good use as "technology’s archangel," but has also managed to lose staggering sums in misguided ventures--some too far ahead of their time, some just plain wacky.

Those missteps have earned Allen the sobriquet used in Rich’s title. Though carelessly written and full of unhelpful asides ("Software is a language, hardware is more technical"), her book provides ample evidence for both why the name fits and why Allen, a visionary and man of action, merits respect.

Lu Ann Faylor Snyder, Phillip A. Snyder - Post-Man ifesto Polygamy, The 1899 to 1904 Correspondence o f Helen, Owen and Avery Woodruff (2009).jpg

01 - USA1 - Lu Ann Faylor Snyder, Phillip A. Snyder - Post-Manifes... Correspondence of Helen, Owen and Avery Woodruff 2009.jpg

These letters among two women and their husband offer a rare look into the personal dynamics of an LDS polygamous relationship. Abraham “Owen” Woodruff was a young Mormon apostle, the son of President Wilford Woodruff, remembered for the Woodruff Manifesto, which called for the divinely inspired termination of plural marriage. It eased a systematic federal judicial assault on Mormons and made Utah statehood possible. It did not end polygamy in the church. Some leaders continued to encourage and perform such marriages. Owen Woodruff himself contracted a secretive, second marriage to Avery Clark. Pressure on the LDS church revived with hearings regarding Reed Smoot’s seat in the U. S. Senate. After church president Joseph F. Smith issued the so-called Second Manifesto in 1904, polygamy and its more prominent advocates were mostly expunged from mainstream Mormonism. Owen Woodruff was not excommunicated, as a couple of his apostolic colleagues were. He and his first wife, Helen May Winters, had died suddenly that same year after contracting smallpox in Mexico. Owen Woodruff had often been “on the underground,” moving frequently, traveling under secret identities, and using code names in his letters to his wives, while still carrying out his administrative duties, which, in particular, involved supervision of the nascent Mormon colonies in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming.

Matthew Frye Jacobson - Whiteness of a Different C olor, European Immigrants and the Alchemy of Race (1998).jpg

America's racial odyssey is the subject of this remarkable work of historical imagination. Jacobson argues that race resides not in nature but in the contingencies of politics and culture. "Whiteness of a Different Color" traces the fluidity of racial categories from an immense body of research in literature, popular culture, politics, society, ethnology, anthropology, cartoons, and legal history.
When we speak of race, we tend to categorize nonwhite people into rigid classifications--but how is whiteness itself determined? Yale American Studies professor Matthew Frye Jacobson looks at the American construction of whiteness out of its polyglot European immigrant population. In 1790, United States naturalization law granted citizenship to "free white persons"--which meant, mostly, those of Anglo-Saxon descent. Thus, Celtic-descended Irish immigrants were discriminated against. As the U.S. population became more culturally mixed beginning in the 1820s, with an increase in immigration from non-Anglo Europe, the nation experienced "a fracturing of whiteness into a hierarchy of plural and scientifically determined white races."
In other words, people who came from Poland, Germany, Italy, and Greece, as well as Jews from many nations, all became, by virtue of the "melting pot" ethic, "Caucasian" whites. But, as the graphically racist cartoons reproduced in the book show, the creation of whiteness was--and is--by no means an easy, continuous process. Jacobson details the political assault on white racism that culminated in the civil rights movement and cites the contemporary "revival and denial of white privilege" in the United States. Although he expresses doubt that a dismissal of white privilege will happen anytime soon, he does hope that in "recognizing the historical fabrication, the changeability, and the contingencies of whiteness, we might begin to look in a new way upon race, the power relations it generates, and the social havoc it wreaks."

Philip Gordon, Jeremy Shapiro - Allies At War, Ame rica, Europe and the Crisis Over Iraq (2004).jpg

A thorough analysis of where U.S./European relations have gone wrong--and how to set them right
We have entered a new age of political engagement, one in which the ideological schism between Europe and the United States has widened to levels not seen since World War II. While many Europeans accuse the U.S. of an overly simplistic, militaristic approach to foreign policy, Europe's reluctance to fully support U.S. efforts against hostile states such as Iraq has led to American mistrust, resentment, and anger.
Written by renowned Brookings Institution fellows Philip Gordon and Jeremy Shapiro, Allies at War examines the current state of the fragile American/European alliance including:
The evolution of NATO in the aftermath of the cold war
Tensions exacerbated by President Bush's refusal to ratify, or even recognize, agreements considered vital in Europe
Israeli/Palestinian violence, and the sharply different opinions on why it exists and how it can be stopped
Today's increasingly tenuous global environment cries out for reasoned analysis and reasonable answers. Allies at War provides a compelling look at the deepening division in the longstanding U.S./European alliance and presents a solid, studied framework for what must be done--soon

R. C. Macleod - The Reminiscences of a Bungle by O ne of the Bunglers, And Two Other Northwest Rebell ion Diaries (1983).jpg

01 - USA1 - R. C. Macleod - The Reminiscences of a Bungle by One o...glers, And Two Other Northwest Rebellion Diaries 1983.jpg

The book contains three diaries and an introduction. The introduction itself is an excellent commentary on the views held by leaders of both sides of the Northwest rebellion. It is especially sympathetic to the situation of the Plains Indians and their treatment by the government and local agents. There is a balanced assessment of the motives behind the moves, counter moves, and lack of motion by the leaders of the opposing forces.
The first diary, Ord's, is by a Canadian from Ontario who returns the English contempt for colonials in kind. He has no respect for Middleton, commanding general of the forces attacking Batoche, and little for the Metis and Indians against whom they are to fight. The other two are no less biased and prejudiced. They all display a very self-centred and self-satisfied attitude. Each occupied a different position in the fighting, Ord and Burden at Batoche, and Cassels at Battleford and Cut Knife Hill. Each thinks his own group had the worst assignments and overcame the worst conditions.
A quotation to give the flavour of the whole:". . .and a brilliant and most intelligent lot they are: a major-general, a captain of Royal Engineers, and infantry lieutenant, an Indian Department official, and a major of militia, each knowing less than the other."
The second man continues in much the same vein but his story is based on his experiences defending Battleford. The third man is, like the first, involved in the action at Batoche and a little less critical. He was with French's Scouts and saw more action than the others.
It becomes interesting, then, to read of how history is recorded, by different persons, from different points of view, and with different motives. If anyone is studying Canada's growth to independence through fighting in World War II, this is a good precursor of colonial and imperialist views and of the familiar story of Canadian soldiers' waiting for the British generals to make up their minds.

William Dusinberre - Them Dark Days, Slavery in th e American Rice Swamps (1996).jpg

In this groundbreaking book, Dusinberre conducts an intense investigation of slavery in the rice swamps of South Carolina and Georgia. Concentrated there were some of the richest--and most expansive--plantations of the South. It was an unhealthy region for both blacks and whites; slavery, in the swamps, was administered with particular severity. Focusing on three of the largest plantations, Dusinberre presents portraits of individuals, both black and white, who personify and exemplify the harsh realities of the slave system. Them Dark Days offers a vivid reconstruction of slavery in action; while it conveys the atmosphere and daily routine of the plantations, it also sets the analysis of slave culture within a wider context of health, discipline, privilege, and psychology.

William W. Falk - Rooted in Place, Family and Belo ngings in a Southern Black Community (2004).jpg

"Rooted in Place brings the texture of a southern family epic and the sociological imagination together with intellectual courage and intimacy. Absorbing and original."—Carol Stack, author of All Our Kin and Call To Home
Throughout the twentieth century, millions of African Americans, many from impoverished, historically black counties, left the South to pursue what they thought would be a better life in the North. But not everyone moved away during what scholars have termed the Great Migration. What has life been like for those who stayed? Why would they remain in a place that many outsiders would see as grim, depressed, economically marginal, and where racial prejudice continues to place them at a disadvantage?
Through oral history William Falk tells the story of an extended family in the Georgia-South Carolina lowcountry. Family members talk about schooling, relatives, work, religion, race, and their love of the place where they have lived for generations. This "conversational ethnography" argues that an interconnection between race and place in the area helps explain African Americans’ loyalty to it. In Colonial County, blacks historically enjoyed a numerical majority as well as deep cultural roots and longstanding webs of social connections that, Falk finds, more than outweigh the racism they face and the economic disadvantages they suffer.
