Osprey - Modelling 30 - Steve van Beveren - Modell ing the Panther Tank (2006).jpg

The PzKpfw V Panther is considered to be one of the finest tanks developed during World War II. Developed as a response to the Soviet deployment of heavy armour on the Eastern Front, the Panther established its reputation as one of the first truly universal tanks and its influence can be seen in the design of modern battle tanks to this day. This book details how to model the main variants of this fascinating and significant World War II tank, including the Bergepanther and Pantherturn. It also provides a listing of the main kits and aftermarket sets available

Concord - Armor At War 7023 - Tom Cockle - Panzers in Italy 1943-1945 (2003).jpg

By the end of 1942, Axis Forces in (forth Africa were being slowly squeezed back into Tunisia by the combined armies of the United States and Great Britain. In January 1943, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill met with the Allied Combined Chiefs of Staff in the Moroccan port city of Casablanca to plan their next move.
American strategists favored concentrating on a cross-Channel offensive and viewed any other course of action as a distraction from the main goal. Churchill on the other hand, felt that a campaign against Italy, 'the soft underbelly of Europe' as he called it, might help knock Italy out of the war and divert some German forces from the Russian Front. As the Allies were in no position to launch a major offensive in France in 1943 and in order to maintain the initiative, it was decided to invade Sicily as soon as the Axis Forces in North Africa were defeated. American General Dwight D. Eisenhower was named Supreme Commander and a target date was set in early July 1943.

Concord - Armor at War 7032 - Steven J. Zaloga - U S Amtracs and Amphibians at War 1941-1945 (1999).jpg

Amphibious assault is one of the most difficult challenges in modern warfare. The defender has a natural advantage since the sea poses a formidable natural barrier to most military operations. With the advent of powerful coastal guns and steel-reinforced concrete fortifications, amphibious assault became all the more difficult. But amphibious assault also has it advantages. Coastlines are often long, and it is impossible to defend all locations. If a weak spot can be found, forces can be landed in relative safety. Until World War II, amphibious landings were conducted by improvised means, usually using ship's boats. In World War I, with major amphibious assaults such as Gallipoli. attempts began to develop specialized craft bener suited to amphibious landings, based on river barges. Further experimentation in the 1930s led to a whole range of practical craft from the small LCVP to the large LST. Although these naval craft were essential to modern amphibious assaults, they had one problem. They could only Transport the troops to the water's edge, at which point they could go no further. So there was some interest in amphibian craft, that is, craft that cuuld not only swim ashore, but once reaching the beach, could move on land.

Concord - Armor At War 7050 - Steven Zaloga - US Tank Battles in France 1944-45 (2003).jpg

U.S. armored units took part in all the major campaigns in the battles for France U.S. tank operations in France involved two types of formations. The armored divisions were intended primarily for mobile operations, and their principal role was to exploit deep behind enemy lines once a penetration had been won by the infantry. Of the sixteen armored divisions raised in WWII, all but one served in the European Theater of Operations. The separate tank battalions were formed to provide support to the infantry. In France, most infantry divisions had a tank battalion and a tank destroyer temporarily attached to them for the conduct of specific operations.....

Armor PhotoGallery 6 - Wojciech J. Gawrych - Crusa der, Cruiser Tank Mk. VI (2003).jpg

The idea of a 'fast tank', based on the Christie suspension, came to the British only in the mid-1930s. The various trials of experimental mechanized forces of the 1920s and early 1930s had led info the development of three distinct types of lank - the 'infantry tank' to support infantry in the attack (slow, lhighlly armed, but heavily armored), the cruiser tank' (faster, more lightly armored, fitted with a gun suitable for taking on enemy tanks), and the 'light tank' (last but hightly armed and armored, for reconatssance).

George Forty - World War Two AFV's Armoured Fighti ng Vehicles & Self-Propelled Artillery (1996).jpg

The Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) played a major role in World War Two The Artillery found it necessary to mechanise some of its field pieces. Armoured Cars were called upon to carry out tasks in addition to reconnaissance. Tank Destroyers were designed to seek, and destroy enemy armour.
Add to this fascinating array such oddities as speedy oversnow Aerosans (armoured, fast sledges), deployed by the Red Army, to enormous seige guns weighing over 1(H) tons, to small remotely controlled and tracked demolition vehicles only six feet in length, to the massive and powerfully equipped armoured trains deployed by the Soviet Union and Germany.
The book contains over 300 photographs from such important collections as the Tank Museum, Bovington, England; the Panzer Museum, Minister, Germany and the Patton Museum of Cavalry & Armor, Fort Knox, USA. The colour sections are illustrated with many examples of rare AFVs, some are preserved in museums whilst others are in private collections, all carefully restored.

Focus On Armour Camouflage & Markings 3 - Kenneth M Jones - German Eastern Front (1978).jpg

It can safely be said that Hitler and his OKH (Oberkommando dcs Heeres) grossly underestimated the strength of the Soviet Army when drawing up plans for the invasion of Russia under the codename 'Barbarossa'. A confident Hitler endorsed Directive No. 21 ordering 146 divisions, comprising seven armies and four panzer groups with 3,580 armoured and 600,000 other vehicles, and 7,184 guns to attack across a wide front at 03.15 hours on the morning of 22nd June, 1941. The German force was deployed in three elements, Army Groups, North, Centre and South.
The initial attacks took the Red Army by surprise. The Northern Group thrust over 40 miles into Russian Territory; within 36 hours the Germans had taken over 300,000 Soviet prisoners and captured a large amount of Soviet vehicles, many of which were in running order and were impressed into German service. By the 9th of July the Germans were crossing the Dvina and Dniepr rivers and two days later, Army Group South were within 10 miles of Kiev. July 16th saw the Germans of Army Group Centre at Smolensk, but strong Soviet counterattacks and stiff opposition held them away from the city interior.

Maksim Kolomyjec - T-34. Enciklopedia (2009).jpg
