In the hip and swingin' London of the '60s, a young window washer, Ginger (Victor Henry) divides his time between picking up the cleaning rag and picking up women in the hip London pubs. One girl he meets is the pretty and demure Jill (Susan George), who his best friend Dwyer (Jack Shephard) takes a shine to. When Ginger agrees to becomes a caretaker at an old man's mansion and a wild party results, he asks Dwyer to look after Jill. Dwyer takes that invitation as a chance to seduce Jill. Later, when Ginger is informed by Jill that she is pregnant, he takes it upon himself to marry her. No sooner are they married than Jill's intimidating mother arrives to announce that she will be taking up quarters with the newlyweds. Now Ginger has to decide whether he should trade in his swingin' ways for a staid domestic life.

McDowell's schizophrenia if this is low-rent art or arty pornography is given full-reign. If Paul Bartel or either of the Kuchar brothers ever tried to make a straight-up XXX porn film, it would probably look a lot like this.

The thin plot is the sexual shenanigans of the inhabitants of an apartment building. There's plenty of hardcore, suggesting McDowell was working for hire.

Mysterious author Françoise LeRoi pursues a happily-married petit bourgeois, but she in turn is pursued by her young painter friend and by a wealthy old man who manipulates their lives with deadly results. It\'s obviously unfair to compare the work of director Juan Luis Buñuel to that of his father, the incomparable Luis Buñuel, but this early effort certainly invites comparison. Made at what possibly was the peak of the elder\'s celebrity, it stars Catherine Deneuve (Belle de jour, Tristana) and Buñuel\'s favourite surrogate, Fernando Rey. There is the familiar Buñuel anti-style: banal conversations, plan Américain shots, little music. The script is riddled with surreal jokes, and co-written by frequent Buñuel collaborator Jean-Claude Carrière. What\'s missing, though, is Buñuel senior\'s substantiality. But taken for what it is, the movie is a pleasure: Deneuve is lovely, Rey is in top form, the jokes are good, and there\'s enough strangeness to keep the viewer engaged to the end. I give it a thumb\'s up on the right hand, and two thumbs up on the left.
