Jest to gra jRPG . Chaos Rings posiada wszystkie elementy typowe dla tego gatunku - eksplorację statycznych, przedstawionych głównie w sposób izometryczny plansz; losowe pojedynki z przeciwnikami; walkę w trybie turowym.
Każda z tych części składowych została maksymalnie uproszczona. Fabuła przenosi garstkę bohaterów do dziwnego świata, w którym jedyne zadanie, jakie przed nimi staje, to wziąć udział w turnieju, który przetrwa tylko najlepszy z nich. Poziomy są proste, w bardzo wyraźny sposób podzielone na kolejne „lochy" (różniące się wyłącznie klimatem i kolorystyką teł), każdy z nich składa się z ledwie kilkunastu plansz. Także walka nie daje zbyt wielu opcji taktycznych - drużyna gracza składa się ledwie z dwóch postaci, które mogą atakować oraz korzystać z magii lub przedmiotów. Aczkolwiek dla fanow serii FF obowiazkowa pozycja.
