Thom Hartmann - Unequal Protection, How Corporatio ns Became ''People'', And How You Can Fight Back ( 2010).jpg

Was the Boston Tea Party the first WTO-style protest against transnational corporations? Did Supreme Court sell out America's citizens in the nineteenth century, with consequences lasting to this day? Is there a way for American citizens to recover democracy of, by, and for the people?
Thom Hartmann takes on these most difficult questions and tells a startling story that will forever change your understanding of American history. Amongst a deep historical context, Hartmann describes the history of the Fourteenth Amendment--created at the end of the Civil War to grant basic rights to freed slaves--and how it has been used by lawyers representing corporate interests to extend additional rights to businesses far more frequently than to freed slaves. Prior to 1886, corporations were referred to in U.S. law as "artificial persons." But in 1886, after a series of cases brought by lawyers representing the expanding railroad interests, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations were "persons" and entitled to the same rights granted to people under the Bill of Rights. Since this ruling, America has lost the legal structures that allowed for people to control corporate behavior.
It's time for "we, the people" to take back our lives. In this revised and expanded second edition, Hartmann incorporates specific examples from today's headlines, and proposes specific legal remedies that could truly save the world from political, economic, and ecological disaster.

Who Wrote That - Hal Marcovitz - Pat Mora (2007).jpg

As a young girl growing up in El Paso, Texas, Pat Mora felt as though she belonged to two worlds - the American culture of Texas and the Latino culture of Mexico. When her parents gave her a typewriter as an 8th-grade graduation gift, Mora started expressing her feelings through poetry. She would go on to become the Chicana voice of the Southwest, telling stories about the desert and the Latino people who are forced to straddle two cultures. Mora has also turned her talents toward authoring storybooks for young readers, in which she teaches valuable lessons about being different, the importance of reading, familial love, and the power of young girls to excel and be leaders. This compelling new biography offers valuable insight into the life and writing of an exceptional author who has become an important voice for multiculturalism in the American literary scene.

William Blazek, Michael K. Glenday - American Myth ologies, Essays on Contemporary Literature (2005).jpg

In its more than three decades of existence, the discipline of American studies has been reliably unreliable, its boundaries and assumptions forever shifting as it continuously repositions itself to better address the changing character of American life, literature, and culture. American Mythologies is a challenging new look at the current reinvention of American studies, a reinvention that has questioned the whole notion of what "American"—let alone "American studies"—means. Essays in the collection range widely in considering these questions, from the effect of Muhammad Ali on Norman Mailer's writings about boxing to the interactions of myth and memory in the fictions of Jayne Anne Phillips to the conflicted portrayal of the American West in Cormac McCarthy's novels. Four essays in the collection focus on Native American authors, including Leslie Marmon Silko and Gerald Vizenor, while another considers Louise Erdrich's novels in the context of Ojibwa myth. By bringing together perspectives on American studies from both Europe and America, American Mythologies provides a clear picture of the current state of the discipline while pointing out fruitful directions for its future.

Joseph Smith - The Book of Mormon, The Original 18 30 Edition (1990).jpg

Ever since its appearance in 1830, the Book of Mormon has been a contentious volume. Claimed by millions of Latter Day Saints to be a record of the ancient Israelites and their journeys in the Americas, this volume has earned its place amongst the classics of apocryphal biblical literature. Here is reprinted the original 1830 edition of this revered text, uncorrected, undoctored, and unimproved. It is an important re-source for comparison with the current "official" edition published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At once scandalous and devotional, the Book of Mormon continues to fascinate and inspire.

Matthew Algeo - Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure , The True Story of a Great American Road Trip (20 09).jpg

On June 19, 1953, Harry Truman got up early, packed the trunk of his Chrysler New Yorker, and did something no other former president has done before or since: he hit the road. No Secret Service protection. No traveling press. Just Harry and his childhood sweetheart Bess, off to visit old friends, take in a Broadway play, celebrate their wedding anniversary in the Big Apple, and blow a bit of the money he’d just received to write his memoirs. Hopefully incognito.
In this lively history, author Matthew Algeo meticulously details how Truman’s plan to blend in went wonderfully awry. Fellow diners, bellhops, cabbies, squealing teenagers at a Future Homemakers of America convention, and one very by-the-book Pennsylvania state trooper--all unknowingly conspired to blow his cover. Algeo revisits the Trumans’ route, staying at the same hotels and eating at the same diners, and takes readers on brief detours into topics such as the postwar American auto industry, McCarthyism, the nation’s highway system, and the decline of Main Street America. By the end of the 2,500-mile journey, you will have a new and heartfelt appreciation for America’s last citizen-president.

Patricia Hill Collins - Black Feminist Thought, Kn owledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowe rment (2000).jpg

USA Books - Patricia Hill Collins - Black Feminist Thought, Knowle..., Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment 2000.jpg

In Black Feminist Thought, Patricia Hill Collins explores the words and ideas of Black feminist intellectuals as well as those African-American women outside academe. She not only provides an interpretive framework for the work of such prominent Black feminist thinkers as Angela Davis, Alice Walker, and Audre Lorde, but she shows the importance of self-defined knowledge for group empowerment. In the tenth anniversary edition of this award-winning work, Patricia Hill Collins expands the basic arguments of the first edition by adding several important new themes. A new discussion of heterosexism as a system of power, an expanded treatment of images of Black womanhood, U.S. Black feminism's connections to Black Diasporic feminisms, and more attention to the importance of social class and nationalism all appear in the new edition. In addition, the new edition includes recent developments in black cultural studies, especially black popular culture, as well as recent events and trends such as the Anita Hill hearings and the backlash against affirmative action.

Mark Lardas - Raid Roughshod Through Dixie, Griers on's Raid 1863 (2010).jpg

On April 17, 1863 Benjamin Grierson led a force of 1,700 Union cavalrymen across enemy lines into the Confederate-held Tennessee in a bold diversionary raid. Over the next seventeen days, Grierson's horsemen caused havoc by destroying railroad lines, attacking outposts, burning military stores and fighting numerous small actions, before breaking back through the lines at Baton Rouge.
The raid was a tremendous success, not only by virtue of the destruction it caused, but also because the Confederates were forced to divert thousands of troops away from the front lines during General Grant's critical Vicksburg offensive. This book tells the complete story of one of the most daring Union raids of the war.

USA Books - David H. Jackson Jr. - Booker T. Washington and the St...emacy, The Southern Educational Tours, 1908-1912 2008.jpg

This book narrates and analyzes the southern tours by Booker T. Washington and his associates in 1908-1912. The author provides analysis of the importance of these tours in early 20th-century race relations, and relates them to Washington’s racial philosophy and its impact on the various parts of black society. Instead of focusing on how Washington struggled against W.E.B. DuBois in a quest for leadership, this study emphasizes how he fought to undermine white supremacy.

J.W. Joseph - Another's Country, Archaeological an d Historical Perspectives on Cultural Interactions in the Southern Colonies (2002).jpg

USA Books - J.W. Joseph - Anothers Country, Archaeological and His...on Cultural Interactions in the Southern Colonies 2002.jpg

The 18th-century South was a true melting pot, bringing together colonists from England, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and other locations, in additions to African slaves - all of whom shared in the experiences of adapting to a new environment and interacting with American Indians. The shared process of immigration, adaptation, and creolization resulted in a rich and diverse historic mosaic of cultures. The cultural encounters of these groups of settlers would ultimately define the meaning of life in the 19th-century South. The much-studied plantation society of that era and the Confederacy that sprang from it have become the enduring identities of the South. A full understanding of southern history is not possible, however, without first understanding the intermingling and interactions of the region's 18th-century settlers. In the essays collected here, some of the South's leading historical archaeologists examine various aspects of the colonial experience, attempting to understand how cultural identity was expressed, why cultural diversity was eventually replaced by a common identity, and how the various cultures intermeshed. Written in accessible language, this book will be valuable to archaeologists and non-archaeologists alike. Cultural, architectural, and military historians, cultural anthropologists, geographers, genealogists, and others interested in the cultural legacy of the South will find much of value in this book.

USA Books - Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Minnie Bruce Pratt, Robin L. ...ey - Feminism and War, Confronting US Imperialism 2008.jpg

Women - both within and without the United States - are being dramatically affected by war as currently waged by that country. But there has been little public space for dialogue about the complex relationship between feminism, women, and U.S. war. The editors have brought together a diverse set of scholars and activists who examine the questions raised by ongoing U.S. military initiatives. These theorists and organizers develop an anti-racist, feminist politics that brings to the foreground an analysis both of imperialist power and forms of resistance to it. The questions they raise include: what are the implications of an imperial nation state laying claim to women's liberation and did U.S. intervention and invasion in fact result in liberation for women in Afghanistan and Iraq?

Edwin Lefevre - Wall Street Stories, Introduction (2008).jpg

“Lefèvre provided me with a goal when I wrote my first Market Wizards book… to write a book that would emulate the spirit of Lefèvre's work in maintaining truth and relevance many years after it was written.”
-from the Foreword by Jack Schwager
The book that launched Edwin Lefèvre's literary career, Wall Street Stories is considered by many to be his most memorable work, second only to Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, his classic fictionalization of the life of Jesse Livermore. Published to great critical acclaim in 1901, Wall Street Stories is a literary romp through the habits and customs of Wall Street. Like all of Lefèvre's fiction it is firmly rooted in the facts as he knew them both as a top financial journalist and a successful investor, and, as was his style, many of the fictional characters in the stories are thinly-veiled portraits of well-known Wall Street personalities such as James R. Keene, Elverton R. Chapman, Roswell Pettibone Flower, and Daniel Drew-names as familiar to the public in their day as Warren Buffet, George Soros, and Julian Robertson are today.
But the charm of the eight tales in Wall Street Stories isn't just in their ability to convey a sense of life in a bygone era. It comes from the timeless insights they offer into human nature warped in the crucible of the stock market. Each of these witty tales of still resonate with poignancy and simple authority.
From the Back Cover
Timeless Wit and Wisdom on the Birth of Modern Wall Street
“Lefévre's lessons on this subject are state of the art-and he provides lots more fun at the same time. His stories are a delight.”
-Peter L. Bernstein, author, Capital Ideas Evolving and Against the Gods
“Wall Street Stories is as relevant today as they were over a century ago. Lefévre's descriptions of investor behavior are now the standard lessons of behavioral finance.”
--Burton G. Malkiel, author, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, 9th Edition
“Wall Street Stories, Edwin Lefévre's collection of masterful short stories, is a box of rare financial bon bons; I guarantee you won't be able to eat just one.”
--William Bernstein, author, The Four Pillars of Investing and Birth of Plenty
“More than a century after he first crafted these insightful parables of fear and greed, Edwin Lefévre's Wall Street Storie continues to furnish investment lessons and wisdom that are as priceless, timeless, and peerless today as they were when American capital markets first emerged onto the global stage.”
-David M. Darst, author, The Art of Asset Allocation, Second Edition
“Markets are driven by the law of supply and demand and human nature (hope, fear, and greed) which doesn't change. Wall Street Stories tells you about stock pools and human psychology on daily display.”
