What exactly is happening when politicians evoke a center space beyond partisan politics to advance what are unmistakably political arguments? Drawing from an analysis of pivotal speeches surrounding Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and first term in office, Centrist Rhetoric: The Production of Political Transcendence in the Clinton Presidency takes an extended look at this question by showing how the possibility of political transcendence takes form in the rhetoric of the political center. Faced with a divided and shrinking party, and later with a pitched battle against a resurgent conservative movement, Clinton used the image of a political center, a "third way" beyond liberal and conservative orthodoxies, to advance his strategic goals, define his adversaries, and overcome key political challenges. As appeals to the center helped Clinton to achieve these advantages in specific cases, however, they also served to define the means, ends, and very essence of democracy in ambiguous and contradictory ways. Touching on controversies from the early 1990s over the future of the Democratic Party, racial identity in American politics, the threat of rightwing extremism, and the role of government, Antonio de Velasco show how centrist rhetoric'scall to transcendence weaved together forms of identification and division, insight and blindness, so as to defy the conventional assessments of both Clinton's supporters and his detractors. Centrist Rhetoric thus offers general insight into theworkings of political rhetoric, and a specific appreciation of Clinton's attempts to define and adjust to the political exigencies of a critical period in history of the Democratic Party and politics in the United States.

This book calls for a new politics of simple living, and it describes specific policies, such as: Work-Time Choice: Today, most people have no choice but to take full-time jobs, because most part-time jobs have lower hourly pay and no benefits. We need policies that let us choose part-time work, so people have the option of consuming less and having more free time. Neighborhood Choice: Since World War II, federal freeway policies and local zoning laws forced most American cities to be rebuilt as low-density sprawl where people cannot leave their houses without driving. We need to build walkable, transit-oriented neighborhoods, so people have the option of reducing the huge economic burden of automobile dependency. Child-Care Choice: Today, we subsidize families who use day care, but we do nothing to help families who work shorter hours to care for their own children. We should give families with preschool children a tax credit that they could use to pay for day care or could use to work shorter hours and have more time to care for their own children. This politics of simple living would help solve environmental problems such as global warming, and would offer a vision of a better future. These policies could give us a green majority.

This big, thoroughly satisfactory introduction to the Pacific War, including its diplomatic prelude of deteriorating Japanese-American relations, boasts contributors who are all highly qualified. Some, such as Dennis Showalter, are virtually household names to World War II buffs, while others, less well known, saliently include Tomoyuki Ishizu on the opening amphibious operations and Joseph Alexander on the amphibious counterattack that carried Americans back across the Pacific. H. P. Willmott is particularly trenchant on the subject of Japanese naval strategy after Midway, in which the Japanese lost the rest of their naval opportunities. The accompanying photographs constitute a definite strength, inasmuch as, while not overwhelming the text, they are reproduced at large-enough scale, cover a wide range of subjects--from Japanese tanks on Chinese roads to American tanks on Pacific island hills--and exclude the overly familiar image. The combined efforts of the contributors also include annotation and bibliography well suited to leading Pacific War neophytes to further research.

Preface

An essay, wrote Dr. Johnson, is "a loose sally of the mind; an irregular undigested piece." Now that is not the sort of definition designed to encourage a modern scholar
to refer to his or her work as an essay. Still, what follows is an essay—but I beg for a newer definition.
"A rank of spotlights" is what Perry Miller once called a collection of his
essays, and that seems good enough for me. Thus, what follows is a tentative, occasionally frankly speculative effort
to shine a spotlight that it is hoped will illuminate some portions of a neglected area of study at the same time that it
may make more comprehensible certain problems that continue to loom large in the modern consciousness. This is a
work designed, then, to open a field of inquiry to questions rather than one claiming to dictate answers. The focus is
on the human concern with death. The Puritans of New England are the people chosen to serve as exemplars of this concern.
Almost a century and a half has now passed since Alexis de Tocqueville began his monumental work on the state of
American civilization by observing: "If we were able to go back to the elements of states and to examine the oldest
monuments of their history, I doubt not that we should discover in them the primal cause of the prejudices, the habits, the ruling passions, and, in short, all that constitutes what is called the national character."(1.) Historians today are generally more skeptical of such
implied determinism than were Tocqueville and his contemporaries, but it may well be that something of an intuitive
sense of agreement with Tocqueville on this matter is at least in part responsible for the fact that America’s Puritans
are today the objects of so much intensive historical study; indeed, considering their limited numbers in the population
of American history, probably no other group of individuals has received as much historical attention in the past few decades.

Why do Americans, and so often, American writers, profess moral sentiments and yet write so little in the traditionally "moralistic" genres of maxim and fable? What is the relation between "moral" concerns and literary theory? Can any sort of morality survive the supposed nihilism of deconstruction? Jefferson Humphries undertakes a discussion of questions like these through a comparative reading of the ways in which moral issues surface in French and American literature. Humphries takes issue with the "amoral" view of deconstruction espoused by many of its detractors, arguing that the debate between the theory's advocates and opponents comes down to two opposing literary and moral traditions. This is a "new" book by Ludwig von Mises, the first of a series of lecture transcripts drawn from careful notes taken by Bettina Bien Greaves in the summer of 1951. It features Mises in a role in which we do not usually find him, not as a writer but as a speaker of enormous erudition and power.

There are nine lectures in this book: Economics and its Opponents; Pseudo-Science and Historical Understanding; Acting Man and Economics; Marxism, Socialism, and Pseudo-Science; Capitalism and Human Progress; Money and Inflation; The Gold Standard: Its Importance and Restoration; Money, Credit, and the Business Cycle; and The Business Cycle and Beyond.

If one has doubts about the method by which this book came about, it only takes a quick glance to see that these must be very faithful renderings of what he said in his famous New York seminar. The brilliance, determination, and unique Misesian perspective are all here.

Plus, we find him commenting on matters one usually doesn't find in his others books, such as the impact that Plato had on the classical world, the place of Rousseau in history, the role of liberalism on the Continent as versus England, the impact of Poincare and Einstein, as well as passing comments on everything from banking debates of the 19th century as well as the role of ideology in modern life.

A thrilling aspect of the book is how one can almost hear Mises speaking as you read through the prose. The reader senses that he or she is right there in the room with Mises as professor and teacher, generously sharing his reflections on theory, history, and politics.

Their participation easily becomes exploitation in the context of consumer culture. The tradition of the common good within Christianity moves communities toward practices of resistance and transformation to this culture in a spirit of solidarity with children.
