On the morning of June 6, 1944, the largest and most powerful armada of warships the world had ever seen left southern England bound for the beaches of Normandy. The thousands of American, British, and Canadian soldiers on board had one mission: invade France and liberate it from the occupation by Nazi Germany. Operacja Pedestal – brytyjska operacja na zachodnim Morzu Śródziemnym podczas II wojny światowej, polegająca na rejsie silnego konwoju z zaopatrzeniem z Wielkiej Brytanii poprzez Gibraltar na Maltę. Zasadnicza część operacji – rejs statków konwoju przez Morze Śródziemne – trwała między 9 a 15 sierpnia 1942. Najbardziej zacięte walki z niemieckim i włoskim lotnictwem, okrętami podwodnymi i kutrami torpedowymi, toczyły się w dniach 11-13 sierpnia. Pomimo ciężkich strat zaangażowanych sił brytyjskich i zatopienia większości statków, część konwoju udało się doprowadzić na Maltę, co stanowiło strategiczne zwycięstwo alianckie. Powodzenie operacji umożliwiło utrzymanie obrony wyspy, a w konsekwencji miało wpływ na przebieg kampanii w Afryce Północnej. Konwój operacji Pedestal na Malcie znany jest jako Santa Marija Convoy (konwój Najświętszej Marii), ponieważ data przybycia ostatniego statku przypadła na święto Wniebowzięcia NMP[1]. Przez Włochów operacja określana jest jako "bitwa z połowy sierpnia" (battaglia di mezzo agosto).
