To już druga po "Lesie Teutoburskim" książka Pawła Rochali, w której opisane są walki Rzymian z Germanami. (Autor wydał również dwie prace z dziejów wczesnopiastowskiej Polski: "Cedynię" i "Niemczę"). W naszym pisarstwie historycznopopularnonaukowym, traktującym o dziejach Rzymu, książki Pawła Rochali są dość szczególne. Nie ma tam zbyt wielu zachwytów nad dokonaniami imperium w zakresie sztuki, inżynierii czy poezji. Nie ma zapatrzenia w Cycerona, Wergiliusza i Swetoniusza. Rzym to raczej chciwy potwór. Sprytny acz syty, świetnie zorganizowany, wciąż potrzebujący pieniędzy, by płacić miejskiemu motłochowi za poparcie. A Germanie? To miłujący wolność, zdrowi, przebojowi i cnót wszelkich pełni junacy. Oczywiście są tacy, którzy skojarzą to sobie z historiami sprzed półwiecza o wysokich blondynach... Ale to skojarzenie jest błędne. Myśl autora, acz niewypowiedziana dosłownie biegnie w innym kierunku: Rzymianie to my: bogaci, syci "trawiący czas na biustach kurtyzan", my, dla których "od wojny zawsze lepszy jest pokój". My, którzy mamy syna jedynaka, ale dwa samochody. My, którzyśmy nauczyli się kpić nawet z własnych bogów. Wiecie już, kim są oni?

This book is a new departure in the history of early medieval Germany. Its theme is the relationship between the Saxon nobles and their kings in the tenth century and the first decade of the eleventh, when the Ottonian rulers were confronted with violent conflicts in their native land and, indeed, in their own family. The author examines the roots of discontent in the context of a segmented and fiercely individualistic warrior society. Stressing the familial and domestic character of the feuds, he shows how the very success of the Ottonian's empire-building created inequalities among their aristocratic subjects and kinsmen. The second part of the book focuses on the exalted position of the women of the royal family and Saxon aristocracy, and is supplemented by a remarkable genealogical table. Professor Leyser concludes with a discussion of sacral kingship - the belief that the king was the vicar of Christ and resistance to him therefore sinful - and its actual effectiveness as a curb on aristocratic ambitions and enmities. This important and original interpretation of the history of the Saxon empire makes sense of a period which has often baffled historians. The author does not merely offer a political explanation, but also draws upon insights from social anthropology for a deeper understanding of the nature of this distant society and the causes of its habitual unrest.

While historians of Christianity have generally acknowledged some degree of Germanic influence in the development of early medieval Christianity, Russell goes further, arguing for a fundamental Germanic reinterpretation of Christianity. This first full-scale treatment of the subject follows a truly interdisciplinary approach, applying to the early medieval period a sociohistorical method similar to that which has already proven fruitful in explicating the history of Early Christianity and Late Antiquity. The encounter of the Germanic peoples with Christianity is studied from within the larger context of the encounter of a predominantly "world-accepting" Indo-European folk-religiosity with predominantly "world-rejecting" religious movements. While the first part of the book develops a general model of religious transformation for such encounters, the second part applies this model to the Germano-Christian scenario. Russell shows how a Christian missionary policy of temporary accommodation inadvertently contributed to a reciprocal Germanization of Christianity.
