Topics covered range from history and literature, lexicography and linguistics, epigraphy and palaeography, to archaeology and numismatics, and the study and reception of the classics.

Guidance is given not only to read, for example, an archaeological or papyrological report, but also on how to find such sources when they are relevant to research. Concentrating on "how-to" topics, the Handbook for Classical Research is a much needed resource for both teachers and students.

Only the supremely self-confident put forth all-encompassing theories of world history, and Morris is one such daredevil. An archaeologist by academic specialty, he advances a quasi-deterministic construct that is suitable for nonacademics. From a repeatedly enunciated premise that humans by nature are indolent, avaricious, and fearful, Morris holds that such traits, when combined with sociology and geography, explain history right from the beginning, when humanity trudged out of Africa, through the contemporary rivalry between China and America. Such temporal range leaves scant room for individual human agency: Morris names the names of world history, but in his narrative, leaders and tyrants, at best, muddle through patterns of history that are beyond their power to shape. And those patterns, he claims, can be numerically measured by a “social development index” that he applies to every epochal change from agriculture to the industrial revolution. However, the reading is not as heavy as it may sound. His breezy style and what-if imagination for alternative scenarios should maintain audience interest; whether his sweeping perspective convinces is another matter altogether.

It explains how the Druids originated in eastern Europe around 850 B.C., bringing to early Britain a cult of an underworld deity, a belief in reincarnation, and a keen interest in astronomy. The work concludes that Arthur was originally a Druid cult figure and that the descendants of the Druids may have founded the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. Po pierwsze, chciałem uzupełnić poprzednią, bardzo zwięzłą charakterystykę nową dokumentacją na podstawie materiałów drukowanych i archiwalnych odnoszących się przede wszystkim do roli Talleyranda w historii polityki zagranicznej Rosji. Po drugie, w okresie gdy nasz niewielki zespół pracował nad trzytomową "Historią dyplomacji", (...) wielokrotnie przychodziło nam na myśl, że na historiografii radzieckiej z punktu widzenia naukowego i politycznego ciąży obowiązek systematycznego przedstawienia i udowodnienia w szeregu monografii tych zagadnień, które w ogólnej "Historii" można było poruszyć jedynie na kilku stronach, a czasami nawet w paru wierszach. (...)"

Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre urodził sie 6 maja 1758 roku w bogatej rodzinie burżuazyjnej, wbrew mylącej formułce de przed nazwiskiem. Matka jego zmarła przy porodzie, ojciec odszedł. Na szczęście żyły ciotki i to one go wychowywały. Ciotki były osobami bardzo religijnymi i w takim duchu odebrał wychowanie. Uzyskał staranne wykształcenie, kończąc studia prawnicze. Po studiach i bezowocnych próbach prowadzenia praktyki adwokackiej w Paryżu wrócił do Arras, gdzie bardzo szybko został dobrym, wziętym adwokatem. Z zamiłowania filozof, od polityki się odżegnywał, ale do czasu, zostając w wyniku kampanii wyborczej przedstawicielem Stanu Trzeciego w Stanach Generalnych. I tak zaczęła się jego kariera polityczna. Był doskonałym mówcą. W Stanach Generalnych wygłaszał płomienne mowy przeciwko cenzusowi wyborczemu i bogactwu Kościoła. Te mowy przyniosły mu sławę. Dorosłe życie Robespierra przypadło na okres Rewolucji Francuskiej – 1789. W krótkim czasie stanął na czele radykalnego klubu jakobinów, którzy w 1793 roku po obaleniu rządów żyrondystów przejęli władzę. Powstał Komitet Ocalenia Publicznego z Robespierrem na czele. Według znawców najbardziej demokratyczną konstytucją czasów nowożytnych była właśnie konstytucja jakobińska. Robespierre był jej współautorem. Konstytucja ta jednak nigdy nie weszła w życie. Przyczyna tego tkwiła głównie w trwającej wojnie. Istotne jest też że Komitet Ocalenia Publicznego z Robespierrem na czele wyprowadził Francję z kryzysu. W odróżnieniu od innych polityków tego okresu , zwłaszcza Dantona, był kryształowo uczciwy, nazywano go nieprzekupnym. Ale sprawdziło się powiedzenie Dantona , że rewolucja zjada swoje dzieci. W lipcu 1794 roku Robespierre został oskarżony o spisek i bez sądu zgilotynowany w wyniku przewrotu 9 thermidora.

Gdy Aleksander Dumas zrobił go jednym z głównym bohaterów powieści "Trzej muszkieterowie", opisał go jako męża stanu, makiawelicznego i oddanego swej służbie w rządzie. Na tej podstawie popularna tradycja przekazuje jego obraz jako osoby niemal złowrogiej.

Richelieu ceniony jest jednak jako ten, który złamał potęgę hugenotów (państwo w państwie) po ich pokonaniu w rezultacie wojny, gdy nie zagrażali już jego polityce, przyznał im wolność wyznania specjalnym edyktem. Niewątpliwie złamał potęgę arystokracji: burzył zamki opornych, konfiskował dobra, ścinał tych, którzy spiskowali.

Richelieu był merkantylistą; ograniczył import, chronił i popierał przemysł francuski, rozbudował flotę. Dbał także o rozwój nauki - założył Akademię Francuską.
W polityce zagranicznej wyniósł Francję do pozycji mocarstwowej.
