Josepha Sherman - Storytelling, An Encyclopedia of Mythology and Folklore (2008).jpg

This set does an effective job of summarizing the major elements of a complex topic: storytelling. Coverage spans oral tradition from its roots, the earliest recorded stories and creation myths, and follows the development of intertwined and contrasting themes, genres, and motifs throughout history, culminating with modern-day urban legends and superheroes. The set is divided into three main sections. The first consists of alphabetically arranged entries on people, places, creatures, characters, cultures, religions, societal norms, adaptations, interpretations, and styles and devices. Entries have been written by various contributors (some are signed) and range from a paragraph to several pages. Occasional black-and-white illustrations and reproductions are scattered throughout. Sources (usually print) are provided for each article, and many articles include see also references. The second part offers retellings of traditional stories. The 49 selections represent an international array of standards and offer a sampling of various subgenres. Care has been taken to preserve original nuances, conventions, and cadences. Samples include a folktale from the Talmud, a changeling tale from Wales, a shape-shifting story from Germany, a parable from the Jataka, a collection of Buddhist moral tales, a riddle tale, a fool tale, hero myths, indigenous legends, and selections from epics. The third part details storytelling resources: a worldwide list of college and university courses in storytelling studies, including contact information; a directory of international storytelling festivals; bibliographies of print materials about storytelling, collections of folktales, and tale type and motif indexes; and a detailed index. These support materials, when combined with the background information provided in the introduction (history, rationale, definitions, materials collection, storytelling techniques, and various applications), help create a comprehensive overview. This well-written and accessible set is recommended for large public and academic collections that support teacher-education programs or that cater to storytellers.

Richard Bradley - Ritual and Domestic Life in Preh istoric Europe (2005).jpg

This fascinating study explores how our prehistoric ancestors developed rituals from everyday life and domestic activities. Richard Bradley contends that for much of the prehistoric period, ritual was not a distinct sphere of activity. Rather it was the way in which different features of the domestic world were played out until they took on qualities of theatrical performance.

With extensive illustrated case-studies, this book examines farming, craft production and the occupation of houses, all of which were ritualized in prehistoric Europe. Successive chapters discuss the ways in which ritual has been studied, drawing on a series of examples that range from Greece to Norway and from Romania to Portugal. They consider practices that extend from the Mesolithic period to the Early Middle Ages and discuss the ways in which ritual and domestic life were intertwined.

Osian Ellis - The Story of the Harp in Wale (1992).jpg

Osian Ellis looks at the development of the instrument, from the emergence of the simple frame-harp to the refinements of the triple harp. He tells of the lives and skills of the musicians themselves, from the harpists of the Middle Ages through to the famous figures of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries - Blind John Parry and John Thomas - and those of more recent years. This book has something for everyone, giving a broad outline of the story of the harp in Wales, and yet including incisive insights into some aspects which have not before been covered in such an accessible style.

Mrs Duberly's journal is one of the most vivid eye-witness accounts we have of the Crimean War. Fanny Duberly, then aged 25, accompanied her husband to the Crimea in 1854, and remained there until the end of the fighting, the only officer's wife to remain throughout the entire campaign. She survived the severe winter of 1854-55, witnessed the battle of Balaklava and the charge of the Light Brigade, and rode through the ruins of Sebastopol.

Chris Wickham - Framing the Early Middle Ages, Eur ope and the Mediterranean, 400-800 (2005).jpg

The Roman empire tends to be seen as a whole whereas the early middle ages tends to be seen as a collection of regional histories, roughly corresponding to the land-areas of modern nation states. As a result, early medieval history is much more fragmented, and there have been few convincing syntheses of socio-economic change in the post-Roman world since the 1930s. In recent decades, the rise of early medieval archaeology has also transformed our source-base, but this has not been adequately integrated into analyses of documentary history in almost any country.

In Framing the Early Middle Ages Chris Wickham aims at integrating documentary and archaeological evidence together, and also, above all, at creating a comparative history of the period 400-800, by means of systematic comparative analyses of each of the regions of the latest Roman and immediately post-Roman world, from Denmark to Egypt (only the Slav areas are left out). The book concentrates on classic socio-economic themes, state finance, the wealth and identity of the aristocracy, estate management, peasant society, rural settlement, cities, and exchange. These are only a partial picture of the period, but they are intended as a framing for other developments, without which those other developments cannot be properly understood.

Wickham argues that only a complex comparative analysis can act as the basis for a wider synthesis. Whilst earlier syntheses have taken the development of a single region as 'typical', with divergent developments presented as exceptions, this book takes all different developments as typical, and aims to construct a synthesis based on a better understanding of difference and the reasons for it. This is the most ambitious and original survey of the period ever written.

Larry Scanlon - The Cambridge Companion to Medieva l English Literature 1100-1500 (2009).jpg

The medieval period was one of extraordinary literary achievement sustained over centuries of great change, anchored by the Norman invasion and its aftermath, the re-emergence of English as the nation's leading literary language in the fourteenth century and the advent of print in the fifteenth. This Companion spans four full centuries to survey this most formative and turbulent era in the history of literature in English. Exploring the period's key authors - Chaucer, Langland, the Gawain-Poet, Margery Kempe, among many - and genres - plays, romances, poems and epics - the book offers an overview of the riches of medieval writing. The essays map out the flourishing field of medieval literary studies and point towards new directions and approaches. Designed to be accessible to students, the book also features a chronology and guide to further reading.

Barbara A. West - A Brief History of Australia (20 10).jpg

Taking a largely chronological approach, A Brief History of Australia looks at social, cultural, economic, and political trends in the country's long history, shedding light on its unique and complex identity. Beginning with the peopling of the continent about 60,000 years ago, the volume examines the early history and culture of the Aboriginals. It continues with the first documented sighting of the landmass by a European in the 17th century, followed by a discussion of the colonial period in the 18th and 19th centuries. From the Federation of 1901 to the Liberal government of John Howard (1998 to 2007) and the Labor government of John Rudd (2007 present), this new book explores Australia's relationship to the British Crown, national security and education policy, the role of sport and environmental issues, Aboriginal rights, women's history, and gay rights. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
