Asa Mittman - Maps and Monsters in Medieval Englan d (2006).jpg

This study centers on issues of marginality and monstrosity in medieval England. It sits at the crossroads of two discourses -- geography and monstrosity -- treated separately in the established scholarship but inseparable in the minds of medieval authors and artists.

Paul Young - Globalization and the Great Exhibitio n; The Victorian New World Order (2009).jpg

This book examines the Great Exhibition as a decisive moment in the formation of a capitalist world picture. In so doing it foregrounds a vision of peace and progress which took hold of British society, within the Crystal Palace and beyond. It emphasizes too that this Victorian understanding of global order legitimized imperial ambition.

Robert Pasnau - Theories of Cognition in the Later Middle Ages (1997).jpg

This book is a major contribution to the history of philosophy in the later medieval period (1250-1350). It focuses on cognitive theory, a subject of intense investigation during those years. In fact many of the issues that dominate philosophy of mind and epistemology today--intentionality, mental representation, skepticism, realism--were hotly debated in the later medieval period. This book offers a careful analysis of these debates, primarily through the work of Thomas Aquinas, Peter John Olivi, and Willam Ockham.

Peter Zarrow - China in War and Revolution, 1895-1 949 (2005).jpg

Providing historical insights essential to the understanding of contemporary China, this text presents a nation's story of trauma and growth during the early twentieth century. It explains how China's defeat by Japan in 1895 prompted an explosion of radical reform proposals and the beginning of elite Chinese disillusionment with the Qing government. The book explores how this event also prompted five decades of efforts to strengthen the state and the nation, democratize the political system, and build a fairer and more unified society.

Scott W. See - The History of Canada, Second Editi on (2010).jpg

The second largest nation on earth, Canada, with its overarching geography of over one million bodies of water, endless prairies, frozen reaches of the north, and awe-inspiring mountain ranges, holds many stunning lands. Though often portrayed by the American media as a pale reflection of the United States, Canada, as displayed here, has a truly complex and intricate image. The political struggles of the past and present and the clash over issues of ethnicity, race, religion, language, and culture are just some of the details that mark this country's unmatched uniqueness. From the earliest contact between Amerindians and Europeans to the early 21st century, this history draws the reader into the drama that is Canada.

Stefano Campana, Salvatore Piro - Seeing the Unsee n; Geophysics and Landscape Archaeology (2008).jpg

The book is divided into two parts. The first part concentrates on the theoretical basis of the various methods, illustrated for the most part through case-studies and practical examples drawn from a variety of geographical and cultural contexts. The second part focuses on the work carried out in the field during the Summer School. Tutors and students took part in the intensive application of the principal techniques of geophysical prospecting (magnetometry, EM, ERT and ground-penetrating radar) to locate, retrieve, process and interpret data for a large Roman villa-complex near Grosseto.

Douglass W. Bailey - Prehistoric Figurines; Repres entation and corporeality in the Neolithic (2005).jpg

Fully illustrated, Prehistoric Figurines brings a radical new approach to one of the most exciting, but poorly understood artefacts from our prehistoric past. Studying the interpretation of prehistoric figurines from Neolithic southeast Europe, Bailey introduces recent developments from the fields of visual culture studies and cultural anthropology, and investigates the ways in which representations of human bodies were used by the pre-historic people to understand their own identities, to negotiate relationships and to make subtle political points.

Bailey examines four critical conditions:
* figurines as miniatures
* figurines as three-dimensional representations
* figurines as anthropomorphs
* figurines as representations.

Through these conditions, the study travels beyond the traditional mechanisms of interpretation and takes the debate past the out-dated interpretations of figurines as Mother-Goddess as Bailey examines individual prehistoric figurines in their original archaeological contexts and views them in the light of modern exploitations of the human form.

Students and scholars of History and Archaeology will benefit immensely from Bailey's close understanding of the material culture and pre-history of the Balkans.

Douglass W.Bailey - Balkan Prehistory; Exclusion, Incorporation and Identity (2000).jpg

Douglass Baileys volume fills the huge gap that existed for a comprehensive synthesis, in English, of the archaeology of the Balkans between 6,500 and 2,000 BC; much research on the prehistory of Eastern Europe was inaccessible to a western audience before now, because of linguistic barriers.

Richard Bradley - Image and Audience; Rethinking P rehistoric Art (2009).jpg

There have been many accounts of prehistoric 'art', but nearly all of them begin by assuming that the concept is a useful one. In this extensively illustrated study, Richard Bradley asks why ancient objects were created and when and how they were used. He considers how the first definitions of prehistoric artworks were made, and the ways in which they might be related to practices in the visual arts today Extended case studies of two immensely popular and much-visited sites illustrate his argument: one considers the megalithic tombs of Western Europe, whilst the other investigates the decorated metalwork and rock carvings of Bronze Age Scandinavia.

Yosef Garfinkel - Dancing at the Dawn of Agricultu re (2003).jpg

As the nomadic hunters and gatherers of the ancient Near East turned to agriculture for their livelihood and settled into villages, religious ceremonies involving dancing became their primary means for bonding individuals into communities and households into villages. So important was dance that scenes of dancing are among the oldest and most persistent themes in Near Eastern prehistoric art, and these depictions of dance accompanied the spread of agriculture into surrounding regions of Europe and Africa. In this pathfinding book, Yosef Garfinkel analyzes depictions of dancing found on archaeological objects from the Near East, southeastern Europe, and Egypt to offer the first comprehensive look at the role of dance in these Neolithic (7000-4000 BC) societies. In the first part of the book, Garfinkel examines the structure of dance, its functional roles in the community (with comparisons to dance in modern pre-state societies), and its cognitive, or symbolic, aspects. This analysis leads him to assert that scenes of dancing depict real community rituals linked to the agricultural cycle and that dance was essential for maintaining these calendrical rituals and passing them on to succeeding generations. In the concluding section of the book, Garfinkel presents and discusses the extensive archaeological data--some 400 depictions of dance--on which his study is based.

Alasdair Whittle - The Archeology of People; Neoli thic Life (2003).jpg

Alasdair Whittle's new work argues powerfully for the complexity and fluidity of life in the Neolithic, through a combination of archaeological and anthropological case studies and current theoretical debate.
The book ranges from the sixth to the fourth millennium BC, and from the Great Hungarian Plain, central and western Europe and the Alpine foreland to parts of southern Britain. Familiar terms such as individuals, agency, identity and structure are dealt with, but Professor Whittle emphasises that they are too abstract to be truly useful. Instead, he highlights the multiple dimensions which simultaneously constituted Neolithic existence in concrete and complicated situations: the web of daily routines, group and individual identities, relations with animals, and active but varied attitudes to the past. The result is a vivid, original and perceptive understanding of the early Neolithic which will offer insights for readers at every level.

Roberta Gilchrist - Gender and Archaeology, Contes ting the past (1999).jpg

Gender and Archaeology is the first volume to critically review the development of this now key topic internationally, across a range of periods and material culture. Roberta Gilchrist explores the significance of the feminist epistemologies. She shows the unique perspective that gender archaeology can bring to bear on issues such as division of labour and the life course. She examines issues of sexuality, and the embodiment of sexual identity. A substantial case study of gender space and metaphor in the medieval English castle is used to draw together and illustrate these issues.

Osprey-Bellona - Żołnierz i Broń 01 - Emir Bukhari - Napoleońscy Husarzy (1996).jpg

Huzarzy, formacja niewątpliwie najbardziej wyróżniająca się spośród oddziałów lekkiej kawalerii, pochodzą z Europy Wschodniej. Jeśli przeanalizujemy umundurowanie huzarów, odnajdziemy korzenie tej formacji w oddziałach kawalerii potężnego Imperium Otomańskiego. Dość ekscentryczne, kryte futrem, wysokie, stożkowate czapki i obszyte futrem, zawadiacko przerzucone przez lewe ramię kurtki oddziałów zwanych Gunali stały się powszechną wojskową modą w Turcji i na Węgrzech. Stąd, poprzez Niemcy i Francję, rozpowszechniły się w pozostałych krajach.
