Anindita Ghosh - Behind the Veil, Resistance, Wome n and the Everyday in Colonial South Asia (2008).jpg

This book aims at re-examining the issue of 'everyday resistance' through the lens of women's experiences in colonial South Asia. The overwhelming image of Indian women during the period is one of passivity, with the exception of some outstanding figures. The attempt in the present volume is to unearth a narrative of deeper and more enduring resistance offered by less extraordinary women in their daily lives. In a breathtaking collection of essays key scholars in the field bring together evidence from a range of unconventional sources such as women's songs, photographs, and embroidery, but equally from legal records, memoirs, and published work, to present women in far more assertive and/or subversive roles. The volume is, however, as much about the nature of power as it is about women. Inspired by both subaltern and gender studies, it tries to highlight the complex ways in which power operates within oppressive structures, making any simple valorization -- and for that matter, theorization -- of gendered resistance difficult if not impossible. Contributors: Padma Anagol, Clare Anderson, Geraldine Forbes, Anindita Ghosh, Siobhan Lambert-Hurley, Tanika Sarkar, Nita Varma Prasad.

Fabrizio Pregadio - Great Clarity, Daoism and Alch emy in Early Medieval China (2006).jpg

This is the first book to examine extensively the religious aspects of Chinese alchemy. Its main focus is the relation of alchemy to the Daoist traditions of the early medieval period (third to sixth centuries). It shows how alchemy contributed to and was tightly integrated into the elaborate body of doctrines and practices that Daoists built at that time, from which Daoism as we know it today evolved. The book also clarifies the origins of Chinese alchemy and the respective roles of alchemy and meditation in self-cultivation practices. It contains full translations of three important medieval texts, all of them accompanied by running commentaries, making available for the first time in English the gist of the early Chinese alchemical corpus.

Ian Green - Print and Protestantism in Early Moder n England (2001).jpg

This is the first study of the full range of Protestant publications from the Reformation to the start of the Evangelical Revival. Based on a sample of over seven hundred best-selling titles of the period, it demonstrates a rapid diversification of the religious works printed and of the readerships at which they were targeted by canny , and also highlights the growing variety of "Protestantisms" then on offer.

All History - Man Abu Nuwar - The Development of Trans-Jordan 1929-...9, A History of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan 2006.jpg

Very little has been written about the history of Trans-Jordan between 1929-39, a decade of importance in the history of its struggle for independence and sovereignty, its progress and development, its relations with Palestine and the neighbouring Arab countries and the new awakening of Arab nationalism. During the 1930s, although still under the mandate of the League of Nations (which was entrusted to Great Britain) Trans-Jordan began to develop an international presence. The people of Trans-Jordan remained very poor however, and the government was supported by a grant-in-aid from the British Government. The British Resident in Amman Col. Henry Cox used that grant-in-aid as a justification for his financial and political control over the new mandated state, which limited its sovereignty. At the time, Great Britain had the largest empire on earth. Her wealth and power, as well as the survival of her Empire, depended mainly on her ability to defend her trade routes with her overseas colonies, protectorates and mandated territories. The Amir Abdullah Ibn al Husain wanted to take Trans-Jordan back from that Great Britain of the 1930s and develop it into an independent state. This book describes the second decade of that struggle.

Philip D. Morgan, Sean Hawkins - Black Experience and the Empire (2004).jpg

This work explores the lives of people of sub-Saharan Africa and their descendants, how they were shaped by empire, and how they in turn influenced the empire in everything from material goods to cultural style. The black experience varied greatly across space and over time. Accordingly, thirteen substantive essays and a scene-setting introduction range from West Africa in the sixteenth century, through the history of the slave trade and slavery down to the 1830s, to nineteenth- and twentieth-century participation of blacks in the empire as workers, soldiers, members of colonial elites, intellectuals, athletes, and musicians. No people were more uprooted and dislocated; or traveled more within the empire; or created more of a trans-imperial culture. In the crucible of the British empire, blacks invented cultural mixes that were precursors to our modern selves - hybrid, fluid, ambiguous, and constantly in motion.

Ralph Ashby - Napoleon Against Great Odds, The Emp eror and the Defenders of France, 1814 (2010).jpg

French defeat in 1814 is too often shrugged off as the result of obvious and understandable factors. Napoleon Against Great Odds: The Emperor and the Defenders of France, 1814 challenges the widely accepted notion that war-weariness and internal political opposition to Napoleon were the decisive and direct causes of French defeat. At least as important, it argues, were material shortages, diplomatic missteps, and even faulty strategic planning on Napoleon's part.

Robin Pickering-Iazzi - Mothers of Invention, Wome n, Italian Fascism, and Culture (1995).jpg

To Mussolini, she was either "donna-madre", the lauded domestic model, or "donna-crisi", intellectual, masculine, a degenerate type. But woman, as "Mothers of Invention" shows, was not a category so easily defined or contained by the Italian Fascist state. This volume is the first thorough investigation of culture produced by Italian women during Fascism (1922-1943). In literature, painting, sculpture, film, and fashion, the contributors explore the politics of invention articulated by these women as they negotiated prevailing ideologies. Essays on women's film spectatorship, on Anna Kuliscioff as the leading feminist in the Socialist party, on Teresa Labriola's concept of Fascist feminism, on futurism and on Irene Brin's reportage of female fashion and self-invention examine women in mass culture, political thought, and daily living.

Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon - Turning Points of the I rish Revolution, The British Government, Intellige nce, and the Cost of Indifference, 1912-1921 (2007 ).jpg

All History - Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon - Turning Points of the Iris...ligence, and the Cost of Indifference, 1912-1921 2007.jpg

In his exploration of the use of intelligence in Ireland by the British government from the onset of the Ulster Crisis in 1912 to the end of the Irish War of Independence in 1921, Grob-Fitzgibbon analyzes the role that intelligence played during those critical nine years. He argues that within that period, the British government lost power in Ireland because it failed to utilize the intelligence it received. Through its indifference, the British government contributed to the turning points of the Irish Revolution, and allowed a bloody guerrilla war to develop that was far from inevitable.

Alok Yadav - Before the Empire of English, Literat ure, Provinciality, and Nationalism in Eighteenth- Century Britain (2004).jpg

All History - Alok Yadav - Before the Empire of English, Literature..., and Nationalism in Eighteenth-Century Britain 2004.jpg

Before the Empire of English offers a broad re-examination of eighteenth-century British literary culture, centered around issues of language, nationalism, and provinciality. It revises our tendency to take for granted the metropolitan centrality of English-language writers of this period and shows, instead, how deeply these writers were conscious of the inherited marginality of their literary tradition in the European world of culture. The book focuses attention on crucial but largely overlooked aspects of eighteenth-century English literary culture: the progress of English topos since the death of Cowley and the cultural aspirations and anxieties it condenses; the concept of the republic of letters and its implications for issues of cultural centrality and provinciality; and the importance of cultural nationalist emphases in "Augustan" poetics in the context of these concerns about provinciality. The book examines imperial aspirations and imaginings in the English literary culture of the period, but it shows how such aspirations are responses to provincial anxieties more so than they are marks of imperial self-assurance. In doing so, the book offers a way of understanding the resonances between the cultural politics of the postcolonial world and those of the earlier history of the English tradition itself.

All History - Anthony Pagden, Elizabeth Sauer, Balachandra Rajan - ...istorical and Literary Investigations, 1500-1900 2004.jpg

Filling a major gap in historical, literary, and post-colonial scholarship, Imperialisms examines early identity statements and nuances of dominance of the world's major imperialisms in various theatres of competition. Developed in collaboration with leading scholars in the field, this book balances historical essays and case studies, and encourages investigations of conversant and competing imperialisms, their practices, and their rhetoric of self-justification. Europe, India, the New World, Africa, and the Far East are among the imperialisms and their sites featured here, and which are analyzed in relation to intersecting debates on politics, religion, literature, nationalism, commerce, conversion, and race. Valuable for preliminary or advanced studies, Imperialisms provides multiple points of entry into and guidelines for a conversation both current and vigorous.

All History - Maria Bullon-Fernandez - England and Iberia in the Mi...ury, Cultural, Literary, and Political Exchanges 2007.jpg

This groundbreaking interdisciplinary collection of essays by American, British, and Iberian scholars examines the literary, historical, and artistic exchanges between England and Iberia from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. Ranging from analyses of royal marriages and political alliances to examinations of literary, artistic, and religious interactions, these essays demonstrate the importance of Anglo-Iberian relationships both in and of themselves and in the larger context of developments in Medieval Europe. They also suggest further avenues for research in an area of study that deserves greater scholarly attention. Scholars and students interested in England and Iberia or in comparative studies of Medieval Europe will want to read this book.
