Tianjin Library - A Pictorial Record of the Qing D ynasty, Rivers and Sites (2008).jpg

A Pictorial Record of the Qing Dynasty - Rivers and Sites, includes two major categories of maps: river maps and maps of historical sites.
China was an agrarian society during medieval times, and harnessing rivers played an important role in sustaining social development. A Compendium on Harnessing Rivers, which was completed in the 42nd year of Emperor Kangxi s reign (1703), contains a large number of valuable pictures compiled and edited by Zhang Penghe, the governor-general in charge of rivers. The book also contains maps of various rivers drawn by anonymous artists. They record the vicissitudes of rivers and areas along the banks while at the same time realistically tracing the shapes of city walls, places of historical interest, and beauty spots along the rivers.
As a mother river of the Chinese nation, the Yellow River has always been the focus of much attention, resulting in more ancient Chinese maps of this river than any other in China. This book collects many maps of the Yellow River made during the late Qing period, most of which also record in writing the dates of the crevasse and the closure of a certain section of the river and the deployment of soldiers guarding it. A Complete Map of the Yellow River within Shandong, A Map of the Yellow River within the Whole Province of Shandong, A Concise Complete Map of the Yellow River within Shandong are among the maps presented in this book.
Other maps available include Maps of the Rivers under Baoding Prefecture, Maps of the Rivers under Zhengding Prefecture, and Maps of the Rivers under the Five Prefectures of Zhili Ji, Zhao, Shen, Ding, and Yi.
In addition, there are three maps of historical interest: Maps of His Majesty s Temporary Dwelling Palaces on His Return Journey, Maps of Dagu Batteries, and Illustrations of Wendeng, Weihai, and Other Historical Sites..

Giancarlo Casale - The Ottoman Age of Exploration (2010).jpg

In 1517, the Ottoman Sultan Selim "the Grim" conquered Egypt and brought his empire for the first time in history into direct contact with the trading world of the Indian Ocean. During the decades that followed, the Ottomans became progressively more engaged in the affairs of this vast and previously unfamiliar region, eventually to the point of launching a systematic ideological, military and commercial challenge to the Portuguese Empire, their main rival for control of the lucrative trade routes of maritime Asia.

The Ottoman Age of Exploration is the first comprehensive historical account of this century-long struggle for global dominance, a struggle that raged from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Straits of Malacca, and from the interior of Africa to the steppes of Central Asia. Based on extensive research in the archives of Turkey and Portugal, as well as materials written on three continents and in a half dozen languages, it presents an unprecedented picture of the global reach of the Ottoman state during the sixteenth century. It does so through a dramatic recounting of the lives of sultans and viziers, spies, corsairs, soldiers-of-fortune, and women from the imperial harem. Challenging traditional narratives of Western dominance, it argues that the Ottomans were not only active participants in the Age of Exploration, but ultimately bested the Portuguese in the game of global politics by using sea power, dynastic prestige, and commercial savoir faire to create their own imperial dominion throughout the Indian Ocean.

Fred Bridgham - The First World War as a Clash of Cultures (2006).jpg

This volume of essays examines the perceived rift between the British and German intellectual and cultural traditions before 1914 and how the resultant war of words both reflects and helped determine historical, political, and, ultimately, military events. This vexed symbiosis is traced first through a survey of popular fiction, from alarmist British and German "invasion novels" to the visions of Erskine Childers and Saki and even P.G. Wodehouse; contrastingly, the "mixed-marriage novels" of von Arnim, Spottiswoode, and Wylie are considered. Further topics include D. H. Lawrence's ambivalent relationship with Germany, Carl Sternheim's coded anti-militarism, H. G. Wells's and Kurd Lasswitz's visions of their countries under Martian invasion, Nietzsche as the embodiment of Prussian warmongering, and the rise in Germany of anglophobic, anti-Spencerian evolutionism. Case histories of the positions of German and English academics in regard to the conflict round out the volume. CONTRIBUTORS: IAIN BOYD WHITE, HELENA RAGG-KIRKBY, RHYS WILLIAMS, INGO CORNILS, NICHOLAS MARTIN, GREGORY MOORE, STEFAN MANZ, ANDREAS HUTHER, HOLGER KLEIN Fred Bridgham is Senior Lecturer in the Department of German at the University of Leeds.

Richard Holmes - Shots from the Front, The British Soldier 1914-1918 (2008).jpg

A handsomely illustrated photographic account, by the bestselling author of 'Tommy' (2003), of the human experience of war as directly witnessed by British soldiers in the First World War. Richard Holmes, one of Britain's best-known military historians (and President of the British Commission of Military History), has selected over 200 photographs taken for the most part by officers and men rather than by official photographers -- mostly unfamiliar ones located in archive collections, regimental museums and private sources. There will also be specially taken photographs by Mike Sheil, one of the best battlefield photographers working today. The book will deal with the whole of the British Army's experience of the First World War -- Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, and so on -- and not just on the Western Front. The photographs will be grouped thematically as extended picture essays; topics include the pre-war army and mobilisation of 1914; the contribution made by nurses; medical treatment and the wounded; infantrymen and their weapons; the campaign in Mesopotamia, etc! Like 'Tommy', the book is about people rather than things, about the human experience of war rather than its strategy or tactics, and at least as much about the everyday or commonplace -- a latrine here or a plate of bully beef there -- as about the lofty or portentous. It shows us the dirt beneath the fingernails of history.

Victorria Harris - Selling Sex in the Reich, Prost itutes in German Society, 1914-1945 (2010).jpg

Selling Sex in the Reich focuses on the voices and experiences of prostitutes working in the German sex trade in the first half of the twentieth century. Victoria Harris develops a nuanced picture of the prostitutes' backgrounds, their reasons for entering the trade, and their attitudes towards their work and those who sought to control them, as well as of their clients and the wide variety of other players within the wider prostitute milieu. Public responses to the issue of prostitution are revealed through the motivations of the law enforcement agencies, social workers, and doctors who increasingly attempted to manage and contain prostitutes' movements and behaviour and to scientifically categorize them as a group.

Prostitution can help recast our understanding of sexuality and ethics, teaching us much about how German society defined itself through its definition of who did not belong within it. In addition, common conceptions of the relationship between the type of government in power and official attitudes towards sexuality are challenged. For, as Harris shows, the prevalent desire to control citizens' sexuality transcended traditional left-right divides throughout this period and intensified with economic and political modernization, producing surprising continuities across the Wilhelmine, Weimar, and Nazi eras.

Peter Spufford - Money and its Use in Medieval Eur ope (1989).jpg

This is the first full-scale study of the history of money, not merely of coinage, to have been written for medieval Europe. The book is not limited to one country, or to any one period or theme, but extracts the most important elements for the historian across the broadest possible canvas. Its scope extends from the mining of precious metals on the one hand, to banking, including the use of cheques and bills of exchange, on the other. Chapters are arranged chronologically, rather than regionally or thematically, and offer a detailed picture of the many and changing roles played by money, in all its forms, in all parts of Europe throughout the Middle Ages. Thus money is seen as having differing significances for differing parts of individual societies. The book shows money moving and changing as a result of war and trade and other political, economic and ecclesiastical activities without regard for national barriers or the supposed separation between 'East' and 'West'.

John V. A. Fine Jr. - When Ethnicity Did Not Matte r in the Balkans, A Study of Identity in Pre-Natio nalist Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia in the Medi eval and Early-Modern Periods (2006).jpg

All History - John V. A. Fine Jr. - When Ethnicity Did Not Matter i...avonia in the Medieval and Early-Modern Periods 2006.jpg

This is history as it should be written. In When Ethnicity Did Not Matter in the Balkans, a logical advancement on his earlier studies, Fine has successfully tackled a fascinating historical question, one having broad political implications for our own times. Fine's approach is to demonstrate how ideas of identity and self-identity were invented and evolved in medieval and early-modern times. At the same time, this book can be read as a critique of twentieth-century historiography-and this makes Fine's contribution even more valuable. This book is an original, much-needed contribution to the field of Balkan studies.

This volume continues Marshall Clagett's studies of the various aspects of the science of Ancient Egypt. The volume gives a discourse on the nature and accomplishments of Egyptian mathematics and also informs the reader as to how our knowledge of Egyptian mathematics has grown since the publication of the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus toward the end of the 19th century. The author quotes and discusses interpretations of such authors as Eisenlohr, Griffith, Hultsch, Peet, Struce, Neugebauer, Chace, Glanville, van der Waerden, Bruins, Gillings, and others. He also also considers studies of more recent authors such as Couchoud, Caveing, and Guillemot.

I. J. Thorpe - Origins of Agriculture in Europe (1 999).jpg

The development of the farming economy was a key stage in human history. However, despite its crucial role in the growth of human societies, it is still widely misunderstood. The Origins of Agriculture in Europe explores the growing body of information on the late Mesolithic and early Neolithic periods and reviews the considerable mass of recent literature and archaeological evidence. I. J.
