Known as the 'Angel of the Battlefield' for her efforts during the American Civil War, Clara Barton is remembered today as a pioneering nurse and humanitarian. By the end of the 19th century, she was one of the most highly regarded American women on the planet, having brought relief to those suffering in wars and disasters the world over. Frightened as a child, insecure as an adult, and perpetually worried about her image, Barton was a thoroughly modern hero, beset by difficulties, including those of her own making. In "Clara Barton: Humanitarian", read about this brave nurse and founder of the American Red Cross.

Steve Ewing - USS Enterprise (CV-6), The Most Deco rated Ship of World War II - A Pictorial History ( 1982).jpg

This is an excellent book on the first aircraft carrier Enterprise. The Big E was the most decorated ship of World War II and had a charmed life. She fought in nearly all of the major naval battles in the Pacific and was awarded 20 battle stars by the government. The Enterprise was also the only carrier operating in the Pacific for a time during the war. This book has good photos and the information is detailed, without being overwhelming for a basic book.

Jerry Keenan - Encyclopedia of the Spanish-America n and Philippine-American Wars (2001).jpg

We all have read about the Rough Rider gallant charge up San Juan Hill, but the reality is quite different. It was in fact Teddy Roosevelt and Kettle Hill, and the enormous casualties suffered would likely cost Colonel Roosevelt his command today. Now you can quickly consult a new reference work and easily check out the facts and myths of the conflict that propelled the United States onto the world stage as an international and colonial power with the acquisition of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

Loring Wirbel - Star Wars, US Tools of Space Supre macy (2003).jpg

The expansion of space militarization forms a common thread with the explicit unilateral empire-building of the Bush administration. But just as Star Wars did not begin with the Missile Defense Agency, preventive war theory did not originate with Donald Rumsfeld. Advocates of military space always were on the front line of those demanding global dominance. Loring Wirbel argues that the seeds for the current space supremacy doctrine were sown at the end of the Cold War, in the early days of the Clinton administration. Examining the evolution of space-based tools, Wirbel shows that missile defense strategy is part of a dangerous US move to wage endless preventive war and demand global supremacy over allies and adversaries alike. Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy provides a fresh look at the role of space as an enabler of the Bush administration's plans for endless preventive war. It debunks the benign notions of missile defence, and expands the definition of space supremacy beyond that of weapons in space, to include the unilateral misuse of space-based intelligence, communications, and targeting technologies.

Charles R. Bowery - Lee & Grant, Profiles in Leade rship from the Battlefields of Virginia (2004).jpg

In the Spring of 1864, the two greatest generals of the Civil War met on the battlegrounds of Virginia to determine the outcome of the war and the future of America. Their actions in the Overland Campaign define the qualities that made them exceptional leaders -- qualities just as relevant in modern business settings.Filled with riveting battlefield scenes, Lee & Grant showcases the generals' legendary skills and illustrates the crucial value of:* persistence: Lee's ability to hold Grant at bay prolonged the survival of the Confederacy.* distinguishing between reverse and defeat: Grant's knack for leveraging tactical defeats toward larger objectives made even Lee admit that Union victory was "a mere question of time."* forming and disseminating a vision, then synchronizing and orchestrating its execution across an entire organization. Grant's ability to mass the power of the Union armies and navies set the conditions for ultimate victory. * "followership," or the ability of a leader to learn and take direction from his or her leader, as Grant did from President Lincoln (and as Lee did from Jefferson Davis)* negotiation skills, which Grant used masterfully in getting Lincoln's support for a radically different military approach.Lee and Grant both exhibited exceptional intelligence, problem-solving skills, and the innate ability to garner the respect of every person in their command. Today's leaders will find an invaluable business asset in their legacy.

I strongly urge managers, business executives, coaches--anyone in a leadership position--to read this book. Jack Uldrich has done the country a great service by bringing to light the extraordinary achievements of this tragically overlooked American--George C. Marshall. It's a great reminder of those leadership pricinples that all of us should stive for-especially in these times.

Noah Feldman - What We Owe Iraq, War and the Ethic s of Nation Building (2004).jpg

What do we owe Iraq?
America is up to its neck in nation building-but the public debate, focused on getting the troops home, devotes little attention to why we are building a new Iraqi nation, what success would look like, or what principles should guide us. What We Owe Iraq sets out to shift the terms of the debate, acknowledging that we are nation building to protect ourselves while demanding that we put the interests of the people being governed--whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, or elsewhere--ahead of our own when we exercise power over them. Noah Feldman argues that to prevent nation building from turning into a paternalistic, colonialist charade, we urgently need a new, humbler approach. Nation builders should focus on providing security, without arrogantly claiming any special expertise in how successful nation-states should be made. Drawing on his personal experiences in Iraq as a constitutional adviser, Feldman offers enduring insights into the power dynamics between the American occupiers and the Iraqis, and tackles issues such as Iraqi elections, the prospect of successful democratization, and the way home. Elections do not end the occupier's responsibility. Unless asked to leave, we must resist the temptation of a military pullout before a legitimately elected government can maintain order and govern effectively. But elections that create a legitimate democracy are also the only way a nation builder can put itself out of business and--eventually--send its troops home.

Francis J. Bremer - Puritanism, A Very Short Intro duction (2009).jpg

Written by a leading expert on the Puritans, this brief, informative volume offers a wealth of background on this key religious movement. This book traces the shaping, triumph, and decline of the Puritan world, while also examining the role of religion in the shaping of American society and the role of the Puritan legacy in American history. Francis J. Bremer discusses the rise of Puritanism in the English Reformation, the struggle of the reformers to purge what they viewed as the corruptions of Roman Catholicism from the Elizabethan church, and the struggle with the Stuart monarchs that led to a brief Puritan triumph under Oliver Cromwell. It also examines the effort of Puritans who left England to establish a godly kingdom in America. Bremer examines puritan theology, views on family and community, their beliefs about the proper relationship between religion and public life, the limits of toleration, the balance between individual rights and one's obligation to others, and the extent to which public character should be shaped by private religious belief.

Frank Pommersheim - Broken Landscape, Indians, Ind ian Tribes, and the Constitution (2009).jpg

Broken Landscape is a sweeping chronicle of Indian tribal sovereignty under the United States Constitution and the way that legal analysis and practice have interpreted and misinterpreted tribal sovereignty since the nation's founding. The Constitution formalized the relationship between Indian tribes and the United States government--a relationship forged through a long history of war and land usurpation--within a federal structure not mirrored in the traditions of tribal governance. Although the Constitution recognized the sovereignty of Indian nations, it did not safeguard tribes against the tides of national expansion and exploitation
As Broken Landscape demonstrates, the federal government has repeatedly failed to respect the Constitution's recognition of tribal sovereignty. Instead, it has favored excessive, unaccountable authority in its dealings with tribes. The Supreme Court has strayed from its Constitutional roots as well, consistently issuing decisions over two centuries that have bolstered federal power over the tribes.
Frank Pommersheim, one of America's leading scholars in Indian tribal law, offers a novel and deeply researched synthesis of this legal history from colonial times to the present, confronting the failures of constitutional analysis in contemporary Indian law jurisprudence. Closing with a proposal for a Constitutional amendment that would reaffirm tribal sovereignty, Pommersheim challenges us to finally accord Indian tribes and Indian people the respect and dignity that are their due.

Bob Calhoun - Beer, Blood & Cornmeal, Seven Years of Strange Wrestling (2008).jpg

Delving into the organized insanity of Incredibly Strange Wrestling (ISW), this memoir takes a look at the bastard offspring of post-punk garage rock and masked Mexican wrestling. Fielding a cast of crazed characters with names like El Homo Loco, Macho Sasquatcho, and El Pollo Diablo, the show lived up to its name. And if that wasn’t enough, cult bands such as NOFX, The Dickies, and The Donnas provided the raucous rock and roll in between the highflying mayhem. ISW emerged from the back alleys and seedy clubs of San Francisco’s South of Market scene to headline the historic Fillmore and barnstorm North America on the Van’s Warped Tour. At the height of its popularity, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Metallica’s James Hetfield could be seen tossing tortillas (which the promoters supplied) at ringside with the rest of the hell heads, boozehounds, and tattooed party girls.

Kevin Kenny - Peaceable Kingdom Lost, The Paxton B oys and the Destruction of William Penn's Holy Exp eriment (2009).jpg

O USA - Kevin Kenny - Peaceable Kingdom Lost, The Paxton Boys an... the Destruction of William Penns Holy Experiment 2009.jpg

William Penn established Pennsylvania in 1682 as a "holy experiment" in which Europeans and Indians could live together in harmony. In this book, historian Kevin Kenny explains how this Peaceable Kingdom--benevolent, Quaker, pacifist--gradually disintegrated in the eighteenth century, with disastrous consequences for Native Americans.
Kenny recounts how rapacious frontier settlers, most of them of Ulster extraction, began to encroach on Indian land as squatters, while William Penn's sons cast off their father's Quaker heritage and turned instead to fraud, intimidation, and eventually violence during the French and Indian War. In 1763, a group of frontier settlers known as the Paxton Boys exterminated the last twenty Conestogas, descendants of Indians who had lived peacefully since the 1690s on land donated by William Penn near Lancaster. Invoking the principle of "right of conquest," the Paxton Boys claimed after the massacres that the Conestogas' land was rightfully theirs. They set out for Philadelphia, threatening to sack the city unless their grievances were met. A delegation led by Benjamin Franklin met them and what followed was a war of words, with Quakers doing battle against Anglican and Presbyterian champions of the Paxton Boys. The killers were never prosecuted and the Pennsylvania frontier descended into anarchy in the late 1760s, with Indians the principal victims. The new order heralded by the Conestoga massacres was consummated during the American Revolution with the destruction of the Iroquois confederacy. At the end of the Revolutionary War, the United States confiscated the lands of Britain's Indian allies, basing its claim on the principle of "right of conquest."

Stephen F. Szabo - Parting Ways, The Crisis In Ger man-American Relations (2004).jpg

Germany and the United States entered the post-9/11 era as allies, but they will leave it as partners of convenience or even possibly as rivals. The first comprehensive examination of the German-American relationship written since the invasion of Iraq, Parting Ways is indispensable for those seeking to chart the future course of the transatlantic alliance. In early 2003, it became apparent that many nations, including close allies of the United States, would not participate in the U.S.-led coalition against Iraq. Despite the high-profile tension between the United States and France, some of the most bitter opposition came from Germany, marking the end not only of the German-American "special relationship," but also of the broader transatlantic relationships preeminence in Western strategic thought. Drawing on extensive research and personal interviews with decisionmakers and informed observers in both the United States and Germany, Stephen F. Szabo frames the clash between Gerhard Schder and George W. Bush over U.S. policy in Iraq in the context of the larger changes shaping the relationship between the two countries. Szabo considers such longer-term factors as the decreasing strategic importance of the U.S.-German relationship for each nation in the post-cold war era, the emergence of a new German identity within Germany itself, and a U.S. foreign policy led by what is arguably the most ideological administration of the post-World War II era.

William Baker - Endless Money, The Moral Hazards o f Socialism (2009).jpg

Today′s economy and capital markets are faced with the long–term buildup of public and private credit. Furthermore, we face higher taxes, greater spending, and more debt. We are now at a critical crossroads and our leaders have few realistic solutions. Proposals calling for tax reforms or fewer regulations have fallen on deaf ears. In fact, U.S. democracy has become more socialist and reform is needed immediately. Endless Money is an examination of how the U.S. government and the country′s financial systems have embraced socialism, and why cultural deterioration reinforces the trend and jeopardizes democracy. In it, author William Baker sees this socialism embodied in two things. The first is the socialization of income, the second is the socialization of credit.
