A Companion to American Indian History captures the thematic breadth of Native American history. Twenty-five original essays written by leading scholars, both American Indian and non-American Indian, bring a comprehensive perspective to a history that in the past has been related exclusively by Euro-Americans.

The essays cover a wide range of Indian experiences and practices, including contacts with non-Indians, religion, family, economy, law, education, gender, and culture. They reflect new approaches to Native America drawn from environmental, comparative, and gender history in their exploration of compelling questions regarding performance, identity, cultural brokerage, race and blood, captivity, adoption, and slavery. Each chapter also encourages further reading by including a carefully selected bibliography.

Intended for students, scholars, and general readers of American Indian history, this timely book is the ideal guide to current and future research.

Joseph C. Jastrzembski - The Apache Wars, The Fina l Resistance (2007).jpg

This book covers the final decades of the Apache wars and resistance in the 19th century; it follows a pretty chronological order. The first chapter has a brief look at Apache history and social customs including an explanation of tribal governing. The second has history on the beginning of the conflict, followed by the third chapter, which focuses on the American Government’s efforts to bring the Apaches to a reservation life. Successive chapters dedicate parts to known Apache leaders: Mangas, Coloradas, and Geronimo along with some lesser known leaders: Lozen, Juh, and Naiche. There is a chapter on the forced movement of the Apaches to Florida and Alabama. The book, then, comes full circle with Apaches allowed to return to land near their homes after being prisoners of war and marking the 100th anniversary of the surrender of Geronimo. This book would be excellent for social studies classes or young adult readers with an interest in US or American Indian history, as it is a very even handed portrayal of the conflict of the Apaches and the United States. The focus on the Apache government style of each tribe and group of Apaches being autonomous in their rule helps for a greater understanding of the problems with achieving peace between the two nations. Helge Ingstad - The Apache Indians, In Search of t he Missing Tribe (2004).jpg

Available in English for the first time, The Apache Indians tells the story of the Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad’s sojourn among the Apaches near the White Mountain Reservation in Arizona and his epic journey to locate the “lost” group of their brethren in the Sierra Madres in the 1930s.

Ingstad traveled to Canada, where he lived as a trapper for four years with the Chipewyan Indians. The Chipewyans told him tales about people from their tribe who traveled south, never to return. He decided to go south to find the descendants of his Chipewyan friends and determine if they had similar stories. In 1936 Ingstad arrived in the White Mountains and worked as a cowboy with the Apaches. His hunch about the Apaches’ northern origins was confirmed by their stories, but the elders also told him about another group of Apaches who had fled from the reservation and were living in the Sierra Madres in Mexico. Ingstad launched an expedition on horseback to find these “lost” people, hoping to record more tales of their possible northern origin but also to document traditions and knowledge that might have been lost among the Apaches living on the reservation.

Through Ingstad’s keen and observant eyes, we catch unforgettable glimpses of the landscape and inhabitants of the southwestern borderlands as he and his Apache companions, including one of Geronimo’s warriors, embark on a dangerous quest to find the elusive Sierra Madre Apaches. The Apache Indians is a powerful echo of a past that has now become a myth.

Dick Martin - Rebuilding Brand America, What We Mu st Do to Restore Our Reputation And Safeguard the Future of American Business Abroad (2007).jpg

Anti-American feeling is at an all-time high. Other nations and cultures have singled out our businesses, government, and way of life for harsh scorn, widespread resentment, even violence.

Rebuilding Brand America is an exploration of anti-Americanism, from its causes and earliest manifestations to current efforts to mitigate it. Martin explains why many of these efforts failed, and reviews the many prescriptions formulated by more than a dozen task forces. He then bases his recommendations on the best practices of leading companies, and on his own 32-year career in public relations and brand management.

Rebuilding Brand America features exclusive interviews with journalists, media and PR professionals, and executives from global icons like McDonald's, Wal-Mart, and FedEx, and analyzes the groundbreaking work of thought leaders such as:

* Pollster John Zogby, whose insights into the Muslim world continue to inform policy in the Middle East
* Newsweek editor Fareed Zakaria, whose essay on the 9/11 attacks shed new light on the Islamic mind
* Keith Reinhard, president of Business for Diplomatic Action, a non-partisan business group organized to fight anti-Americanism by addressing its causes in U.S. business practice

Based on a deep understanding of anti-Americanism's roots, Rebuilding Brand America is a call to action that will help U.S.-based companies prosper in global markets.

James M. Volo, Dorothy Denneen Volo - Family Life in 19th-Century America (2007).jpg

Nineteenth century families had to deal with enormous changes in almost all of life's categories. The first generation of nineteenth century Americans was generally anxious to remove the "Anglo" from their Anglo-Americanism. The generation that grew up in Jacksonian America matured during a period of nationalism, egalitarianism, and widespread reformism. Finally, the generation of the pre-war decades was innately diverse in terms of their ethnic backgrounds, employment, social class, education, language, customs, and religion. Americans were acutely aware of the need to create a stable and cohesive society firmly founded on the family and traditional family values. Yet the people of America were among the most mobile and diverse on earth. Geographically, socially, and economically, Americans (and those immigrants who wished to be Americans) were dedicated to change, movement, and progress. This dichotomy between tradition and change may have been the most durable and common of American traits, and it was a difficult quality to circumvent when trying to form a unified national persona. Volumes in the Family Life in America series focus on the day-to-day lives and roles of families throughout history. The roles of all family members are defined and information on daily family life, the role of the family in society, and the ever-changing definition of family are discussed. Discussion of the nuclear family, single parent homes, foster and adoptive families, stepfamilies, and gay and lesbian families are included where appropriate. Topics such as meal planning, homes, entertainment and celebrations, are discussed along with larger social issues that originate in the home like domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and divorce. Ideal for students and general readers alike, books in this series bring the history of everyday people to life.

Heather Lehr Wagner - The History of the Republica n Party (2007).jpg

When Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, he was a member of a political party that had been founded only six years earlier: the Republican Party. In March 1854, a group of men gathered to form a political party that reflected their concerns about life in America. They were opposed to the spread of slavery, supported high taxes on imported goods, and were in favor of homesteading to help settle the rapidly expanding Western territories. Since then, the Republican Party - like the American political system - has undergone many profound changes. Offering detailed, full-color photographs; an in-depth narrative; and features such as sidebars and a glossary, "The History of the Republican Party" fully examines the development of this party, including its prominent figures, key events, and ideological trends.

Jennifer Denetdale - The Long Walk, The Forced Nav ajo Exile (2007).jpg

Through a series of treaties, the first of which was signed in 1849, the Navajo Nation began to cede its homeland to the U.S. government. By this time, some Americans had begun to settle in Navajo territory-the present-day Four Corners region of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah-but the real impetus for wanting the Navajos' land was greed. Led by General James Carleton, the U.S. Army hoped to remove the Navajos and claim the extensive mineral and pastoral wealth of their lands. In June 1863, Carleton presented the Navajos with an ultimatum: Surrender by the following month or accept the consequences. After the Navajos refused to capitulate, Carleton ordered his field commander, Colonel Kit Carson, to carry out a scorched-earth policy to destroy their crops and livestock. By the end of the year, the Navajos were destitute and starving and began to surrender to the U.S. Army. What followed was one of the most tragic events in U.S. history, the forced removal of the Navajos to Bosque Redondo, a reservation in eastern New Mexico. Collectively known as the Long Walk, the approximately 400-mile-long series of marches was endured by more than 8,000 men, women, and children. The forced removal from their homeland and the subsequent internment at Bosque Redondo left an indelible mark on the Navajo psyche that continues to the present day.

Heather Lehr Wagner - The History of the Democrati c Party (2007).jpg

Democrat or Republican? The two political parties have become fixtures in the American political experience, the main choices in all elections, from the national to the local level. But the choice was not always so clear. When the Democratic Party was first established by Thomas Jefferson in 1800, it was actually known as the Republican Party. Today it is the oldest political party in the United States, and among the oldest political parties in the world. The "History of the Democratic Party" offers students an in-depth history of this major political entity. Full-color photographs, succinct text, sidebars, and a glossary enhance this book's value and shed light on the Democratic Party's development as well as the evolution of the American political process.

Susan Scheckel - The Insistence of the Indian (199 8).jpg

Americans' first attempts to forge a national identity coincided with the apparent need to define--and limit--the status and rights of Native Americans. During these early decades of the nineteenth century, the image of the "Indian" circulated throughout popular culture--in the novels of James Fenimore Cooper, plays about Pocahontas, Indian captivity narratives, Black Hawk's autobiography, and visitors' guides to the national capitol. In exploring such sources as well as the political and legal rhetoric of the time, Susan Scheckel argues that the "Indian question" was intertwined with the ways in which Americans viewed their nation's past and envisioned its destiny. She shows how the Indians provided a crucial site of reflection upon national identity. And yet the Indians, by being denied the natural rights upon which the constitutional principles of the United States rested, also challenged American convictions of moral ascendancy and national legitimacy.

Scheckel investigates, for example, the Supreme Court's decision on Indian land rights and James Fenimore Cooper's popular frontier romance The Pioneers: both attempted to legitimate American claims to land once owned by Indians and to assuage guilt associated with the violence of conquest by incorporating the Indians in a version of the American political "family." Alternatively, the widely performed Pocahontas plays dealt with the necessity of excluding Indians politically, but also portrayed these original inhabitants as embodying the potential of the continent itself. Such examples illustrate a gap between principles and practice. It is from this gap, according to the author, that the nation emerged, not as a coherent idea or a realist narrative, but as an ongoing performance that continues to play out, without resolution, fundamental ambivalences of American national identity.
