O USA - Kathleen Deagan, Jose Maria Cruxent - Columbuss Outpost ... Tanos, Spain and America at La Isabela, 1493-1498 2002.jpg

In 1493 Christopher Columbus led a fleet of 17 ships and more than 1200 men to found a royal trading colony in America. Columbus had high hopes for his settlement, which he named La Isabela after the queen of Spain, but just five years later it was in ruins. It remains important, however, as the first site of European settlement in America and the first place of sustained interaction between Europeans and the indigenous Tainos. Kathleen Deagan and Jose Maria Cruxent tell the story of this historic enterprise. Drawing on their ten-year archaeological investigation of the site of La Isabela, along with research into Columbus-era documents, they contrast Spanish expectations of America with the actual events and living conditions at America's first European town. Deagan and Cruxent argue that La Isabela failed not because Columbus was a poor planner but because his vision of America was grounded in European experience and could not be sustained in the face of the realities of American life. Explaining that the original Spanish economic and social frameworks for colonization had to be altered in America in response to the American landscape and the non-elite Spanish and Taino people who occupied it, they shed light on larger questions of American colonialism and the development of Euro-American cultural identity.

Christopher Carr, D. Troy Case - Gathering Hopewel l, Society, Ritual, and Ritual Interaction (2005).jpg

Among the most socially and personally vocal archaeological remains on the North American continent are the massive and often complexly designed earthen architecture of Hopewellian peoples of two thousand years ago, their elaborately embellished works of art made of glistening metals and stones from faraway places, and their highly formalized mortuaries. In this book, twenty-one researchers in interwoven efforts immerse themselves and the reader in this vibrant archaeological record in order to richly reconstruct the societies, rituals, and ritual interactions of Hopewellian peoples. By finding the faces, actions, and motivations of Hopewellian peoples as individuals who constructed knowable social roles, the authors explore, in a personalized and locally contextualized manner, the details of Hopewellian life: leadership, its sacred and secular power bases, recruitment, and formalization over time; systems of social ranking and prestige; animal-totemic clan organization, kinship structures, and sodalities; gender roles, prestige, work load, and health; community organization in its tri-scalar residential, symbolic, and demographic forms; intercommunity alliances and changes in their strategies and expanses over time; and interregional travels for power questing, pilgrimage, healing, tutelage, and acquiring ritual knowledge. These and other aspects of Hopewellian life are revealed through the assembly of comprehensive data bases of unprecedented scale, most of which are fully reported in CD form for the benefit of other researchers. This book is useful to scholars, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates interested in the workings and development of social complexity at local and interregional scales, recent theoretical developments in the anthropology of the topics listed above, the prehistory of eastern North America, its history of intellectual development, and Native American ritual, symbolism, and belief.

Morris Davis - The Methodist Unification, Christia nity and the Politics of Race in the Jim Crow Era (2008).jpg

In the early part of the twentieth century, Methodists were seen by many Americans as the most powerful Christian group in the country. Ulysses S. Grant is rumored to have said that during his presidency there were three major political parties in the U.S., if you counted the Methodists. The Methodist Unification focuses on the efforts among the Southern and Northern Methodist churches to create a unified national Methodist church, and how their plan for unification came to institutionalize racism and segregation in unprecedented ways. How did these Methodists conceive of what they had just formed as “united” when members in the church body were racially divided? Moving the history of racial segregation among Christians beyond a simplistic narrative of racism, Morris L. Davis shows that Methodists in the early twentieth century — including high-profile African American clergy — were very much against racial equality, believing that mixing the races would lead to interracial marriages and threaten the social order of American society. The Methodist Unification illuminates the religious culture of Methodism, Methodists' self-identification as the primary carriers of "American Christian Civilization," and their influence on the crystallization of whiteness during the Jim Crow Era as a legal category and cultural symbol.

Paul Michael Wihbey - The Rise of the New Oil Orde r (2009).jpg

The Rise of the New Oil Order demonstrates that there are vast reserves of oil to meet an increasing demand. Oil will remain the world's primary strategic resource and an invaluable commodity. But oil will come from different sources (mainly North America), will be of a different kind (unconventional), and will be produced with different technologies by different types of companies. The oil market will not be regulated by OPEC but by the consumers and producers together, who will create the mechanisms to achieve price stability at a higher level. In this new context, the book examines the strategies of the traditional players (the US, Russia, Japan, the European Union, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico) and of the new ones (Alberta, Saskatchewan, China, India, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Nigeria and West Africa). The book offers a very different explanation of the recent rise of the price of oil. The increase of' demand in China and India is not the key factor. Other rational and irrational factors may explain the speculation and market manipulation that occurred, especially in 2007-2008. The Rise of the New Oil Order is a manifesto and a practical roadmap with specific proposals to restore a healthy market equilibrium to this most critical of commodities. It is a book that brings transparency to consumers and investors, companies, banks, and governments, while casting aside irrational beliefs and simplistic explanations. The book is based on a seven-hour interview session with two of Switzerland's most knowledgeable business reporters.

Andrea Batista Schlesinger - The Death of Why, The Decline of Questioning and the Future of Democrac y (2009).jpg

Questions = Power

Obsessed with answers, we have lost sight of the power and value of questions. Debates over globalization, climate change, health care, and poverty will not be "solved" with simple answers, but that's what Americans are being trained to expect. Schlesinger argues that we're besieged by cultural forces that urge us to avoid critical thinking and independent analysis. The media reduces politics to a spectator sport, standardized tests teach students to fill in the dots instead of opening their minds, and even the Internet promotes habits that discourage looking deeper.

But the situation isn't hopeless. Schlesinger profiles individuals and institutions renewing the practice of inquiry-particularly in America's youth-at a time when our society demands such activity from us all. Our resilience will depend on our ability to struggle with what we don't know, to live and think outside comfortable bubbles of sameness, and, ultimately, to ask questions.

Gilbert S. Guinn, G.H. Bennet - British Naval Avia tion in World War II, The US Navy and Anglo-Americ an Relations (2007).jpg

O USA - Gilbert S. Guinn, G.H. Bennet - British Naval Aviation i...ld War II, The US Navy and Anglo-American Relations 2007.jpg

Throughout World War II, the United States played a pivotal role in the development of British maritime aviation. Even before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm pilots were being trained in the United States under a scheme set up by the United States Navy as part of the Lend-Lease agreement. For many young British aviation cadets the journey across the Atlantic and America was eye-opening. Men found themselves caught up with issues such as segregation in the American South, of which they had no experience and little understanding. Drawing on extensive interviews and correspondence with former cadets, together with archival research, Guinn and Bennett document the endeavours of American Navy pilots who taught over 16,000 British aviation cadets how to fly and fight. They comprehensively examine the details and impact of the scheme from a military, diplomatic, educational and cultural perspective.

M. V. Smith - Ten Propositions Regarding Spacepowe r (2004).jpg

Major M. V. Smith’s Ten Propositions Regarding Spacepower is an important contribution to the spacepower literature. Within weeks of being written, an early draft found its way into the various colleges around Air University’s Academic Circle. Within months it reached colleges and universities across the United States and even the international academic community. Major Smith’s work begins to quench the growing thirst among those seeking to understand elements contributing to spacepower. More importantly, it offers a view of what spacepower will mean for the United States in the coming decades. I believe Ten Propositions Regarding Spacepower will live up to its aim: assisting political leaders, military professionals, and interested citizens to understand better the nature of space as a source of national and military power. It is a "must read" that belongs at the very top of your reading list.

Doris Weatherford - American Women during World Wa r II, An Encyclopedia (2009).jpg

American Women during World War II documents the lives and stories of women who contributed directly to the war effort via official and semi-official military organizations, as well as the millions of women who worked in civilian defense industries, ranging from aircraft maintenance to munitions manufacturing and much more. It also illuminates how the war changed the lives of women in more traditional home front roles. All women had to cope with rationing of basic household goods, and most women volunteered in war-related programs. Other entries discuss institutional change, as the war affected every aspect of life, including as schools, hospitals, and even religion.
American Women during World War II provides a handy one-volume collection of information and images suitable for any public or professional library.

O USA - Thomas G.Mitchell - Indian Fighters Turned American Poli...oliticians, From Military Service to Public Office 2003.jpeg

The words "Indian fighter" recall Custer. "Indian fighter politician" brings to mind Andrew Jackson or William Henry Harrison. Yet politicians who rose to prominence by exploiting their participation in bloody campaigns against Native America were much more common than most Americans realize. This book will bring to light important facts and highlight controversial issues regarding well-known figures from American history and folklore, while situating the questionable actions of these politicians within their historical and political times.

Walter LaFeber - The Panama Canal, The Crisis in H istorical Perspective (1990).jpg

Noted historian LaFeber (history, Cornell), author of the acclaimed Inevitable Revolutions ( LJ 12/1/82), has updated his 1978 classic, bringing his discussion of U.S.-Panama relations up to the 1980s. This edition also marks the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. Even though this was written before the October 1989 failed coup attempt to oust Manuel Noriega, LaFeber notes that "Even if the General Noriega disappeared, the political relationship between Panama and the United States must be rebuilt and rethought." LaFeber also has provided an updated bibliographic essay.

National Research Council - Compensating for Wetla nd Losses Under the Clean Water Act (2001).jpg

Recognizing the importance of wetland protection, the Bush administration in 1988 endorsed the goal of “no net loss” of wetlands. Specifically, it directed that filling of wetlands should be avoided, and minimized when it cannot be avoided. When filling is permitted, compensatory mitigation must be undertaken; that is, wetlands must be restored, created, enhanced, and, in exceptional cases, preserved, to replace the permitted loss of wetland area and function, such as water quality improvement within the watershed. After more than a dozen years, the national commitment to “no net loss” of wetlands has been evaluated. This new book explores the adequacy of science and technology for replacing wetland function and the effectiveness of the federal program of compensatory mitigation in accomplishing the nation’s goal of clean water. It examines the regulatory framework for permitting wetland filling and requiring mitigation, compares the mitigation institutions that are in use, and addresses the problems that agencies face in ensuring sustainability of mitigated wetlands over the long term.

David M. Harland - NASA's Moon Program, Paving the Way for Apollo 11 (2009).jpg

David Harland here initiates a series of books on NASA’s Moon Program of the 1960s and early 1970s. Presented chronologically, ‘NASA’s Moon Program – The Early Years’ will outline the Mercury and Gemini manned missions, the unmanned lunar probes and the Apollo missions leading up to Apollo 11, covering that mission only as a postscript. ‘The First Men on the Moon – The Story of Apollo 11,’ released in 2006 is devoted solely to that mission. ‘Apollo – The Definitive Sourcebook,’ published in 2006, covered all the missions, including the unmanned tests, in an encyclopedic style which included many facts and figures. ‘Exploring the Moon – The Apollo Expeditions,’ published in 1999, focused on the final three Apollo missions, and covered only their activities on the lunar surface. A fully re-illustrated second edition with color illustrations was released in 2008. The individual mission books in this series will relate to the planning, flight and results, and are written in the same style as ‘The First Men on the Moon – The Story of Apollo 11,’ i.e. using dialog from the in-flight transcripts (including some conversations never broadcast) to bring their stories to life. David Harland will later cover the other five missions that landed on the Moon, concluding by 2012 – the 40th anniversary of the ‘last’ Apollo mission.
Each of the Apollo missions that reached the Moon gets its own book-lenth account covering planning, the flight, and the scientific results. This series will become the definitive account of the Apollo era. It will give the Springer/Praxis list unrivaled coverage of the Apollo era of space exploration. Plans are already in the works for a return to the Moon by 2020 to create a Moonbas

Dick Morris, Eileen McGann - Condi vs. Hillary, Th e Next Great Presidential Race (2005).jpg

Who will be president in 2008? Many believe that the White House is Hillary Clinton's to lose. As long-time strategists Dick Morris and Eileen McGann reveal in Condi vs. Hillary, however, Hillary's plans for higher office are vulnerable to a challenge from a most unexpected quarter: the Bush administration's secretary of state and former national security advisor, Condoleezza Rice. Rice is the only figure on the national scene who has the credentials, the credibility, and the charisma to lead the GOP in 2008. And, as this first book on the subject demonstrates, a race between these two commanding, but very different, women is a very real possibility -- and would inevitably prove one of the most fascinating and important races in American history.
