Patricia Bonomi - Under the Cope of Heaven, Religi on, Society, and Politics in Colonial America (200 3).jpg

In this pathbreaking study, Patricia Bonomi argues that religion was as instrumental as either politics or the economy in shaping early American life and values. Looking at the middle and southern colonies as well as at Puritan New England, Bonomi finds an abundance of religious vitality through the colonial years among clergy and churchgoers of diverse religious background. The book also explores the tightening relationship between religion and politics and illuminates the vital role religion played in the American Revolution. A perennial backlist title first published in 1986, this updated edition includes a new preface on research in the field on African Americans, Indians, women, the Great Awakening, and Atlantic history and how these impact her interpretations.

Charles E. Aguar, Berdeana Aguar - Wrightscapes, F rank Lloyd Wright's Landscape Designs (2002).jpg

Here is the first book to examine the environmental landscape designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, probably the world’s best known and most influential architect. WRIGHTSCAPES analyzes 85 of his works, and pays particular attention to site planning, landscape design, community scale, and regional planning.
The authors include many original diagrams, rare archival material, and some 200 photographs, many never published before. WRIGHTSCAPES also chronicles how and way Wright’s famous ecological sensabilities were established and how his design aspirations went far beyond accepted definitions of architecture.
WRIGHTSCAPES is ideal for required or supplemental reading within many curriculums of architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning or urban design.

Brigid Cherry - Horror (2009).jpg

Horror cinema is a hugely successful, but at the same time culturally illicit genre that spans the history of cinema. It continues to flourish with recent cycles of supernatural horror and torture porn that span the full range of horror styles and aesthetics. It is enjoyed by audiences everywhere, but also seen as a malign influence by others.

A gripping and deeply sobering view of 'big chicken' from the bottom up. Striffler's experience on the (dis)assembly line, his sympathetic grasp of the hopes, dreams, and origins of the workforce, and of the larger history of the industry, make for a uniquely powerful and memorable book.

Terry Waghorn - The System, A Story of Intrigue an d Market Domination (2003).jpg

At its core are three basic concepts: (1) Focus: Market domination begins with the need to focus all of your energy and resources on one business and shed all others. And it shouldn't be just any old business, it should be the one in which you have or could have a unique advantage—something that customers value and competitors find difficult to copy. (2) Fortify: Choosing a unique position, however, is not enough to guarantee a sustainable competitive advantage. Eventually someone will find a way to imitate it. The challenge, therefore, is to make imitation as difficult as possible for them to do. In short, you need to fortify your position. And, (3) Foster Futurity: Regardless of how well you fortify your position, the reality is that eventually your more inspired rivals will find a way to penetrate your defenses. You need to be ready for that day when it arrives, so that when it does, your enemies will arrive only to find that you're no longer there—you've already moved on, leaving nothing but warm ashes in your wake. And the game of catch-up begins anew.

Adam Woog - Jacques Cartier (2009).jpg

Commissioned by King Francois I of France to claim new lands for the country, Jacques Cartier arrived in Newfoundland in 1534. Seeking a Northwest Passage to the riches of India, he continued on and discovered the St. Lawrence River, a natural border existing between present-day Canada and New England. Cartier briefly explored the area and sailed back to France, only to return to the St. Lawrence with two American Indians as guides. His findings contributed to the founding of Montreal and Quebec and the creation of a lucrative trading network between the French and the American Indians. "Jacques Cartier" is a biography about the first explorer to establish a French presence in North America, an accomplishment that allowed the next generation of French sailors to create the first settlements in Canada.

Samuel Willard Crompton - Robert De La Salle (2009 ).jpg

La Salle is one of the best-known but least-understood explorers of human history. Celebrated for following the Mississippi to its mouth in present-day Louisiana, he was also berated for failing to relocate that same area when he came by sea. Justly known as the greatest of the canoe-carrying and paddle-wielding Frenchmen of his time, he was a failure when it came to colonization and conquest. There was greatness within him, including a powerful will to succeed, but there was also sheer stubbornness, which cost him when he attempted to create a French colony in what is now Texas. In "Robert de La Salle", read about a man whose journeys encouraged explorers from other European nations to survey the southeastern United States.

Chris Mooney, Sheril Kirshenbaum - Unscientific Am erica, How Scientific Illiteracy Threatens our Fut ure (2009).jpg

In his famous 1959 Rede lecture at Cambridge University, the scientifically-trained novelist C.P. Snow described science and the humanities as "two cultures," separated by a "gulf of mutual incomprehension." And the humanists had all the cultural power—the low prestige of science, Snow argued, left Western leaders too little educated in scientific subjects that were increasingly central to world problems: the elementary physics behind nuclear weapons, for instance, or the basics of plant science needed to feed the world's growing population.

Now, Chris Mooney and Sheril Kirshenbaum, a journalist-scientist team, offer an updated "two cultures" polemic for America in the 21st century. Just as in Snow's time, some of our gravest challenges—climate change, the energy crisis, national economic competitiveness—and gravest threats--global pandemics, nuclear proliferation—have fundamentally scientific underpinnings. Yet we still live in a culture that rarely takes science seriously or has it on the radar.

For every five hours of cable news, less than a minute is devoted to science; 46 percent of Americans reject evolution and think the Earth is less than 10,000 years old; the number of newspapers with weekly science sections has shrunken by two-thirds over the past several decades. The public is polarized over climate change—an issue where political party affiliation determines one's view of reality—and in dangerous retreat from childhood vaccinations. Meanwhile, only 18 percent of Americans have even met a scientist to begin with; more than half can't name a living scientist role model.

For this dismaying situation, Mooney and Kirshenbaum don't let anyone off the hook. They highlight the anti-intellectual tendencies of the American public (and particularly the politicians and journalists who are supposed to serve it), but also challenge the scientists themselves, who despite the best of intentions have often failed to communicate about their work effectively to a broad public—and so have ceded their critical place in the public sphere to religious and commercial propagandists.

A plea for enhanced scientific literacy, Unscientific America urges those who care about the place of science in our society to take unprecedented action. We must begin to train a small army of ambassadors who can translate science's message and make it relevant to the media, to politicians, and to the public in the broadest sense. An impassioned call to arms worthy of Snow's original manifesto, this book lays the groundwork for reintegrating science into the public discourse--before it's too late.

Gary Dean Best - The Dollar Decade, Mammon and the Machine in 1920s America (2003).jpg

This book examines the underlying causes of the tumult of the 1920s in America, which has since captivated writers, readers, moviegoers, and television viewers. The author proposes that the impact of World War I, the popularization of Freud and Darwin, and the especially cataclysmic effects of the machine age shaped the lives of people living in this decade. He maintains that only in this context can much of the behavior of the time be understood, from the popularity of the Ku Klux Klan to the excesses of the flappers and the jazz age.

Fred Nadis - Wonder Shows, Performing Science, Mag ic, And Religion In America (2005).jpg

"This is a fascinating and important study of popular science in America after the mid-nineteenth century, filled with memorable characters and the amazing demonstrations of their wonders."—James B. Gilbert, author of Redeeming Culture: American Religion in an Age of Science
"A timely and illuminating exploration of American science and pseudo-science as embodied in ‘wonder shows.’ Fred Nadis impressively connects these colorful performances to contemporary debates about the power and prestige of traditional science amid recent challenges to science’s intellectual and moral authority. A terrific book!"—Howard Segal, Bird Professor of History, University of Maine
"This is a fascinating examination of the boundaries between science, religion, and magic."—Robert W. Rydell, author of All the World’s a Fair: Visions of Empire at American International Expositions, 1876–1916
Imagine a stage full of black cats emitting electrical sparks, a man catching bullets with his teeth, or an evangelist jumping on a transformer to shoot bolts of lightning through his fingertips. These and other wild schemes were part of the repertoire of showmen who traveled from city to city, making presentations that blended science with myth and magic.
In Wonder Shows, Fred Nadis offers a colorful history of these traveling magicians, inventors, popular science lecturers, and other presenters of "miracle science" who revealed science and technology to the public in awe-inspiring fashion. The book provides an innovative synthesis of the history of performance with a wider study of culture, science, and religion from the antebellum period to the present.
It features a lively cast of characters, including electrical "wizards" Nikola Tesla and Thomas Alva Edison, vaudeville performers such as Harry Houdini, mind readers, UFO cultists, and practitioners of New Age science. All of these performers developed strategies for invoking cultural authority to back their visions of science and progress. The pseudo-science in their wonder shows helped promote a romantic worldview that called into question the absolute authority of scientific materialism while reaffirming the importance of human spirituality. Nadis argues that the sensation that these entertainers provided became an antidote to the alienation and dehumanization that accompanied the rise of modern America.
Although most recent defenders of science are prone to reject wonder, considering it an ally of ignorance and superstition, Wonder Shows demonstrates that the public’s passion for magic and meaning is still very much alive. Today, sales continue to be made and allegiances won based on illusions that products are unique, singular, and at best, miraculous. Nadis establishes that contemporary showmen, corporate publicists, advertisers, and popular science lecturers are not that unlike the magicians and mesmerists of years ago.

William Ferris - Give My Poor Heart Ease, Voices o f the Mississippi Blues (2009).jpg

For blues lovers who love their experience pure and strong, Ferris (Blues from the Delta) conducted more than 20 interviews of blues and gospel performers from the Mississippi Delta for his latest book. The author did much of this fieldwork as a graduate student during the 1960s and 1970s, capturing these singers close to where they grew up, chopping cotton and tending the farms during the day and prowling around the jukes and roadhouses at night. From among the Delta locals of sacred and secular music, Ferris interviews such blues masters as James Son Ford Thomas, Willie Dixon and B.B. King, with their words accompanied by a stirring CD/DVD of their music. There is an intriguing section on the infamous Parchman Penitentiary in the Delta, where cruel overseers and defiant inmates battle each other. Joyous, powerful and authentic, this package is designed to both inform and entertain those willing to plunge into this audacious world.
