Religious pluralism is everywhere in today's politics. Increased immigration flows, the collapse of communism, and the globalization of communications technologies have all fostered a wider variety of religious beliefs, practices, and organizations within and across democratic societies. This is true in both the United States and Europe, where growing and diverse minority communities are transforming the political landscape. As a result, controversies over such things as headscarves and depictions of Mohammed are unsettling a largely secular Europe, while a Christian majority in the US faces familiar questions about church-state relations amidst unprecedented religious diversity. Far from receding into the background, religious language pervades arguments around established issues such as abortion and capital punishment, and new ones such as stem cell research and same-sex marriage. In Democracy and the New Religious Pluralism, leading scholars from multiple disciplines explore these dynamics and theirimplications for democratic theory and practice. What are the contours of this new religious pluralism? What are its implications for the theory and practice of democracy? Does increasing religious pluralism erode the cultural and social foundations of democracy? To what extent do different religious communities embrace similar -- or at least compatible -- ethical and political commitments? By seeking answers to these questions and revealing religious pluralism as both a source of animosity and a potent force for peaceful engagement, this book offers a revealing look at the future of religion in democratic societies.

Zalmay Khalilzad - The United States and Asia, Tow ard a New U.S. Strategy and Force Posture (2001).jpg

The past 20 years have been a time of relative peace in Asia and, notwithstanding the 1997-1998 financial crisis, a period of robust economic growth as well. Currently, however, Asia is beset by a variety of problems that could well imperil the stability it has long enjoyed -- including territorial disputes, nuclear rivalry, rising nationalist sentiments, and increased military capabilities. This report summarizes the manner in which the United States can best meet these challenges and thereby ensure continued peace and stability in the region. In the interests of this goal, the report outlines an integrated political, military, and economic strategy that the United States can pursue to inhibit the growth of rivalries in Asia and, more broadly, prevent the rise of instability in the region. Also delineated are changes in U.S. military posture that will be made necessary by this strategy.

Stephen Haseler - Super-State, The New Europe and its Challenge to America (2004).jpg

Even before Donald Rumsfeld's infamous "Old Europe" gibe, Europe's divergence from America on issues like war with Iraq and trade competition has become increasingly ill-tempered. With the Euro successfully launched and a European army a real prospect, Europe is now a recognizable political entity on the world scene. A population of over 300 million and the world's largest economy have already turned the EU into a super-power, but it is now on the verge of being a super-state. Haseler examines why the new European super-state has emerged, how it will inevitably rival the United States and how America is reacting to this new world player. Super-State explores what this new EU super-state means for the citizens of Europe and their attitudes to America, looking specifically at how a eurosceptic Britain will fit into this new structure.

J. Gordon Melton - Protestant Faith in America (20 03).jpeg

America is often thought of as a Protestant nation and slightly more than half of the population currently profess their membership in a church rooted in the original Protestant movement of the 16th century. Protestants established their churches in the American colonies early on, their descendents fought in the American Revolution, and they took the lead in conquering the continent and civilizing the frontier. Their culture dominated the land through the 19th century and it continues to wield a vast influence on the direction of American life even today. This volume focuses on those churches that trace their history to the Reformation within the Roman Catholic Church, including the Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian, Congregational, and Episcopal churches.

If you'd like to get the most out of your dollar and your trip, this is the guide for you. I put a fresh spin on budget travel, showing you how to see the best for less and how to see it in a more authentic way-the way the locals do.
Instead of spending $300 a night for a chain hotel, why not live it up in an antiques-filled Fifth Avenue mansion for just $75, or bed down in a SoHo gallery just steps from the artwork for $110? Or how about enjoying falafel at Alfanoose for just $5, so you can splurge on up-and-coming chef Abdhul Traore's steak frites dusted with African herbs at Les Enfants Terribles?

Jonathan H. Rees - Representation and Rebellion, T he Rockefeller Plan at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, 1914-1942 (2010).jpg

O USA - Jonathan H. Rees - Representation and Rebellion, The Roc...an at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, 1914-1942 2010.jpg

In response to the tragedy of the Ludlow Massacre, John D. Rockefeller Jr. introduced one of the nation s first representation plans (ERPs) to the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company in 1915. With the advice of William Mackenzie King, who would go on to become prime minister of Canada, the plan which came to be known as the Rockefeller Plan was in use until 1942 and became the model for ERPs all over the world. In Representation and Rebellion Jonathan Rees uses a variety of primary sources including records recently discovered at the company s former headquarters in Pueblo,Colorado to tell the story of the Rockefeller Plan and those who lived under it, as well as to detail its various successes and failures.Taken as a whole, the history of the Rockefeller Plan is not the story of ceaseless oppression and stifled militancy that its critics might imagine, but it is also not the story of the creation of a paternalist panacea for labor unrest that Rockefeller hoped it would be. Addressing key issues of how this early twentieth-century experiment fared from 1915 to 1942, Rees argues that the Rockefeller Plan was a limited but temporarily effective alternative to independent unionism in the wake of the Ludlow Massacre. The book will appeal to business and labor historians, political scientists, and sociologists, as well as those studying labor and industrial relations.

'After reading Apollo Moon Missions: The Unsung Heroes, you'll realize how little we all know about those who made the small steps and giants leap possible. ' Robert Pearlman, CollectSpace.com, member of the U.S. Space Walk of Fame Foundation Board of Directors 'Journalist Watkins takes advantage of decades of close attention as he recounts the stories of some of the thousands of men and women who made getting to the moon their daily work and uncanny passion. He includes the story of a publicist who lobbied for a television camera on Apollo 11, without which we would not have seen Neil Armstrong take that step, specialists on signal-jamming USSR submarines and lightning, and the lucky folks who got to design the Moon Rover.

O USA - Richard Immerman, Loch Johnson, Kathryn Olmsted, John Pr...ntral Intelligence Agency, Security under Scrutiny 2005.jpg

Created in 1947, the Central Intelligence Agency plays an important part in the nation's intelligence activities, and is currently playing a vital role in the "war on terrorism." While the agency is often in the news and portrayed in television shows and films, it remains one of the most secretive and misunderstood organizations in the United States. This work provides an in-depth look into the Central Intelligence Agency and how its responsibilities affect American life. After a brief history of the agency, chapters describe its organization, intelligence/counterintelligence, covert operations, controversies, key events, and notable people.

William Anthony Hay, Harvey Sicherman - s There St ill a West, The Future of the Atlantic Alliance (2 007).jpg

The international response to the attacks of 9/11 promised a new sense of unity between the United States and its European allies, but subsequent disagreements over Iraq have made the Western alliance seem tentative at best. Is There Still a West? looks beyond recent events to put disagreements within NATO into historical perspective, exploring how cultural, demographic, economic, and military factors since the 1940s have affected future prospects for security cooperation. As questions underlying the current rift persist, distinguished scholars—Stephen A. Schuker, Michael Radu, Jeremy Black, and others—consider whether that gathering of nations long known as “the West” remains a valid construct. Claiming that differences over Iraq are no greater than past conflicts over Suez, China, or other issues, they adopt a “realist” stance in international relations to offer an alternative to neoconservative and liberal viewpoints. They show what the major issues—and nonissues—really are, and which among them are the true time bombs.
