"This book combines two of the most interesting developments in the study of law and politics in recent years to great effect...far beyond its masterful illumination of how railroads influenced legal development in nineteenth century America, [this book] will spark serious debate about the common law, citizenship, and political and legal development. Ezra Tawil - The Making of Racial Sentiment, Slave ry and the Birth of The Frontier Romance (2006).jpg

The frontier romance, an enormously popular genre of American fiction born in the 1820s, helped redefine 'race' for an emerging national culture. Ezra Tawil argues that the novel of white-Indian conflict provided authors and readers with an apt analogy for the problem of slavery. By uncovering the sentimental aspects of the frontier romance, Tawil redraws the lines of influence between the 'Indian novel' of the 1820s and the sentimental novel of slavery, demonstrating how Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin ought to be reconsidered in this light. This study reveals how American literature of the 1820s helped form modern ideas about racial differences.

John Kane - The Politics of Moral Capital (2001).jpg

"[John Kane's] thoughtful and well-written book....stands as a refreshing effort to come to terms with the inescapably moral character of political life. It is also an important contribution to the academic study of statesmanship. It succeeds in its stated goal of helping to recover a truly capacious sense of political reality, and successfully demonstrates that moral capital is a fact with which any science of politics must come to terms if it is to do justice to the true efficacy of moral prestige and personal character in human affairs." Arthur Riss - Race, Slavery, and Liberalism in Nin eteenth-Century American Literature (2006).jpg

Moving boldly between literary analysis and political theory, contemporary and antebellum US culture, Arthur Riss invites readers to rethink prevailing accounts of the relationship between slavery, liberalism, and literary representation. Situating Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Frederick Douglass at the center of antebellum debates over the person-hood of the slave, this book examines how a nation dedicated to the proposition that 'all men are created equal' formulates arguments both for and against race-based slavery. This revisionary argument promises to be unsettling for literary critics, political philosophers, historians of US slavery, as well as those interested in the link between literature and human rights.

O USA - Robin Fretwell Wilson - Reconceiving the Family, Critiqu...titutes Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution 2006.jpg

This book provides a critical examination of and reflection on the American Law Institute's (ALI) Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution: Analysis and Recommendations ('Principles', arguably the most sweeping proposal for family law reform attempted in the U.S. over the last quarter century. The volume is a collaborative work of individuals from diverse perspectives and disciplines who explore the fundamental questions about the nature of family, parenthood, and child support. The contributors are all recognized authorities on aspects of family law and provide commentary on the principles examined by the ALI - fault, custody, child support, property division, spousal support, and domestic partnerships, utilizing a wide range of analytical tools, including economic theory, constitutional law, social science data, and linguistic analysis. This volume also includes the perspectives of U.S. judges and legislators and leading family law scholars in the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada and Australia.

Donald Alexander Downs - Restoring Free Speech and Liberty on Campus (2006).jpg

This book deals with the decline of respect for free speech, academic freedom, and civil liberty that has swept higher education in America over the last decade and a half and with what needs to be done to reverse this trend. Drawing on personal experience as well as research, Downs analyzes the origins and development of the problem, and shows how political organization of students and faculty can lead to constructive change. He presents four case studies that illustrate this thesis.

Robert H. Mohlenbrock - This Land, A Guide to Cent ral National Forests (2006).jpg

Part armchair travelogue, part guide book, this projected three-volume series--divided into the western, central, and eastern United States--will introduce readers to all 155 national forests across the country. This Land is the only comprehensive field guide that describes the natural features, wildernesses, scenic drives, campgrounds, and hiking trails of our national forests, many of which--while little known and sparsely visited--boast features as spectacular as those found in our national parks and monuments. Each entry includes logistical information about size and location, facilities, attractions, and associated wilderness areas. For about half of the forests, Robert H. Mohlenbrock has provided sidebars on the biological or geological highlights, drawn from the "This Land" column that he has written for Natural History magazine since 1984.
Superbly illustrated with color photographs, botanical drawings, and maps, this book is loaded with information, clearly written, and easy to use.
This volume covers national forests in: Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming

Robert H. Mohlenbrock - This Land, A Guide to East ern National Forests (2006).jpg

"To my knowledge, there is no other title that assembles the information gathered in this book in such a comprehensive and helpful manner.... This Land will be a singular, indispensable and definitive title on the national forests for some time to come." - John A. Murray, author of Writing about Nature "This Land adeptly conveys the sense of awe that characterizes our national forests. In the end, this volume will help us and future generations understand and appreciate the wealth of this land and remind us of the importance of being responsible stewards of the people's land today and for future generations." - Mike Dombeck, Chief Emeritus, U.S. Forest Service "Americans are very mobile today and many have become disillusioned with the masses encountered in the national parks... the national forests are a national secret to most people. [This Land] will begin to unfurl that secret." - Lawrence R. Stritch, President of the Eastern Panhandle Native Plant Society of West Virginia"

Robert W. Frizzell - Independent Immigrants, A Set tlement of Hanoverian Germans in Western Missouri (2007).jpg

Between 1838 and the early 1890s, German peasant farmers from the Kingdom of Hanover made their way to Lafayette County, Missouri, to form a new community centered on the town of Concordia. Their story has much to tell us about the American immigrant experience - and about how newcomers were caught up in the violence that swept through their adoptive home. Robert Frizzell grew up near Concordia, and in this first book-length history of the German settlement, he chronicles its life and times during those formative years. Founded by Hanoverian Friedrich Dierking - known as "Dierking the Comforter" for the aid he gave his countrymen - the Concordia settlement blossomed from 72 households in 1850 to 375 over the course of twenty years. Frizzell traces that growth as he examines the success of early agricultural efforts, but he also tells how the community strayed from the cultural path set by its freethinker founder to become a center of religious conservatism. Drawing on archival material from both sides of the Atlantic, Frizzell offers a compelling account for scholars and general readers alike, showing how Concordia differed from other German immigrant communities in America. He also explores the conditions in Hanover - particularly the village of Esperke, from which many of the settlers hailed - that caused people to leave, shedding new light on theological, political, and economic circumstances in both the Old World and the New.

Michael C. Ruppert - A Presidential Energy Policy (2009).jpg

Michael Ruppert addresses some simple but widely ignored concepts relating to the critical role of oil and gas in the modern world. First, they are finite resources, formed in the geological past, therefore subject to depletion. Second, they have to be found before they can be produced. He then goes on to address the wider implications recognizing that there is a finite Oil Age. Many claims have been made that new technology will counter the natural decline, but there is an irony: the better the technology, the faster the depletion. The book then turns to related subjects, including foreign policy and the invasion of Iraq, the hopes for renewable energy substitutes, the impact on farming and population, and the nature of Money. The impact on the economy is a central theme of the book. It gives emphasis to the U.S. situation but also covers the wider World, ending with twenty-five sensible recommendations by which the United States Government could react to the unfolding situation.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, destroyers have formed the backbone of the United States Navy. In peacetime, they performed such day-to-day tasks such as delivering mail and patrolling America's coastline. However, with the outbreak of World War II, the destroyers were called upon to form the front-line against America's enemies.

Mary A. Stout - Geronimo, A Biography (2009).jpg

A revered Apache spiritual and military leader and a recurring figure in pop culture lore, Geronimo was a key figure during the settlement of the American Southwest. He led one of the last major independent Indian uprisings and personified the struggle of Native Americans during westward expansion. Geronimo: A Biography explores the life of this legendary leader, a man who has become an icon of the courageous—and doomed—struggle of the Native Americans.
This biography follows GeronimoÕs life from his traditional Apache upbringing to his final days as a celebrity prisoner of war. It discusses the historical and social forces at work during the period, including Native American traditions and lifeways. It also shows how GeronimoÕs surrender in 1886 marked the end of the traditional Native American way of life. No longer free to roam the lands of their forefathers, Indians faced a future of captivity and a struggle to maintain their identity and traditions.

Allan R. May - Gangland Gotham, New York's Notorio us Mob Bosses (2009).jpg

"While writing about the many discrepancies and contradictions in the life histories of 10 infamous New York mob bosses of the 20th century, the author notes which facts rest on popular tales or theories, and often gives several versions of the same event. The biographies describe the early years of each man, chart his rise to prominence within the mob, provide reactions from those who knew him, and chronicle the last years of his life. Each biography is illustrated with a picture of its subject and concludes with a listing of print and electronic resources. Two of those profiled, Joe Adonis and Albert Anastasia, have not had any biographies published about them until now. A 35-page timeline from 1882 to 1976 allows readers to track the birth, death, and important events in the life of each mobster. May has written many articles on organized crime." – Reference & Research Book News
