In 1871 in Paris, an extraordinary revolutionary experiment took place. For 72 days the city's poor took control of Europe's greatest capital. Today, we see a growing disillusionment with professional politicians across the advanced industrial democracies. The Commune offers a vibrant alternative based on mass participation and direct democracy. Donny Gluckstein looks at the Commune's achievements, the many dilemmas it faced and its tragic outcome. But this is more than just a history book. Drawing on the experience of the Commune, Donny seeks to illuminate contemporary debates about democracy, the state and revolution.

Penelope Wilson - Hieroglyphs, A Very Short Introd uction (2003).jpg

Hieroglyphs were far more than a language. They were an omnipresent and all-powerful force in communicating the messages of ancient Egyptian culture for over three thousand years. This ancient form of expression was used as art, as a means of identifying Egyptian-ness, even for communication with the gods. In this exciting new study, Penelope Wilson explores the cultural significance of hieroglyphs with an emphasis on previously neglected areas such as cryptography and the continuing decipherment of the script into modern times. She covers topics like the origins of writing in Egypt, hieroglyphic script and the Egyptian language, hieroglyphs and art, Scribes and everyday writing, and the decipherment of Egyptian Hieroglyphs in the modern world. She also examines the powerful fascination hieroglyphs still hold for us today. This book is the ideal reference for anyone with an interest in the fascinating civilization of Ancient Egypt.

About the Author

Penelope Wilson is Lecturer in Egyptology at the University of Durham and the author of Sacred Signs: Hieroglyphs in Ancient Egypt.

Historia2 - Gavin Lucas - An Archaeology of Colonial Identity, Pow...terial Culture in the Dwars Valley, South Africa 2006.jpg

This book examines how colonial identities were constructed in the Cape Colony of South Africa since its establishment in the 17th century up to the 20th century. It is an explicitly archaeological approach but which also draws more widely on documentary material to examine how different people in the colony – from settler to slave – constructed identities through material culture. The book explores three key groups: The Dutch East India Company, the free settlers and the slaves, through a number of archaeological sites and contexts. With the archaeological evidence, the book examines how these different groups were enmeshed within racial, sexual, and class ideologies in the broader context of capitalism and colonialism, and draws extensively on current social theory, in particular post-colonialism, feminism and Marxism. This book is aimed primarily at archaeologists, but will also attract historians and those interested in cultural theory and material culture studies. Specifically, historical archaeologists and students of historical archaeology will be the primary readership and buyers.

Barbara C. Bigelow - World War II, Primary Sources (1999).jpg

Presents fifteen excerpts from primary sources related to World War II, including speeches, diary entries, newspaper accounts, novels, poems, and memoirs.
Between 1939 and 1945 a war was fought among all the major powers of the world. It was a war that affected a vast percentage of the world’s population. More people died during World War II than had died in any previous war. From the soldiers on the front lines to the citizens on the home front, World War II: Primary Sources tells the story of the war in the words of the people who lived it.
While all aspects of a war of this scale could not be covered completely in one volume, every effort has been made to offer a variety of World War II experiences. Sixteen full or excerpted documents include speeches from world leaders, such as Winston Churchill’s “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat” speech and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Day of Infamy” speech. The soldiers’ view of the war is presented in excerpts from such works as Stephen Ambrose’s Citizen Soldiers and Ernie Pyle’s dispatches from the front lines of the war, while such pieces as Since You Went Away: World War II Letters from American Women on the Home Front and The Hiroshima Maidens: A Story of Courage, Compassion, and Survival relate civilians’ war experiences.
Primary Sources allows your students to study 35 full or excerpted speeches, diary entries, newspaper accounts, novels, poems, memoirs and other materials related to the war. Excerpts are grouped together in broad subject categories so students can compare and contrast various viewpoints. Special features include: "Things to Remember While Reading, " "What Happened Next, " "Report Topics, " "Did You Know, " definitions of terms approximately 60 photographs and much, much more.
