This edited collection breaks new ground within the field of postcolonial diaspora studies, moving beyond the predominantly Anglophone bias of much existing scholarship by investigating comparative links between a range of Anglophone, Francophone, Hispanic and Neerlandophone cultural contexts. Ranging across the disciplines of history, sociology, literary analysis, cultural studies and the visual arts, the collection examines both the contributions and limitations of existing postcolonial diaspora scholarship, as well as developing new cross-disciplinary theoretical paradigms. Exploring a variety of geographical locations including Europe, the Americas, the Pacific and the Middle East, the collection is divided into three main sections: 'Discovering Europe' (with essays by John McLeod, Elleke Boehmer and Frances Gouda, and Siobhán Shilton); 'Nostalgia and the Longing for Home' (featuring Patrick Williams, Patria Román-Velásquez and Janet Wilson); and 'Comparative Diasporic Contexts' (with contributions from Celia Britton, Mohit Prasad and Bill Marshall), concluding with a postscript by Elizabeth Ezra and Terry Rowden.

Patrick O'Flanagan - Port cities of Atlantic Iberi a, c. 1500-1900 (2008).jpg

Charting the evolution of the seaports of Atlantic Spain and Portugal over four centuries, this book examines the often dynamic interaction between the large privileged ports of Lisbon, Seville and Cadiz (the Metropoles) and the smaller ports of, among others, Porto, Galicia and Santander (the Second Tier). With the long-term privileging and monopolies of the larger ports in decline, a new era of tremendous economic and entrepreneurial dynamism ensued for the coastal provinces of both countries.

Walton Look Lai - The Chinese in the West Indies, 1806-1995 (2000).jpg

In the first seven chapters, nearly all the documents are 'official', generated by government agencies or officers. Colonial Office correspondence and papers, reports of Immigrations Department officials and British agents in South China, reports and papers of the Colonial Land and Emigration Commission in London, Parliamentary Papers these are the main sources from which Look Lai chooses his extracts . . . But in chapters 8 and 9, which deal with the post-indenture Chinese after 1870, and the free immigration starting around 1890, the type of documentation changes. The Chinese were no longer the responsibility of any governmental agency and their arrival and subsequent activities generated little official documentation. In these chapters, Look Lai relies on non-official sources . . . Although the documentary extracts do not go beyond 1950, the family biographies have been updated to the early 1990s. They are based on personal interviews with, or written accounts by, elderly family members.

Marshall G. S. Hodgson - Rethinking World History; Essays on Europe, Islam and World History (1993).jpg

Is the history of the modern world the history of Europe writ large? Or is it possible to situate the history of modernity as a world historical process apart from its origins in Western Europe? In Part One of this posthumous collection of essays, Marshall G.S. Hodgson, a former professor of history at the University of Chicago, challenges adherents of both Eurocentrism and multiculturalism to rethink the place of Europe in world history. He argues that the line that connects Ancient Greeks to the Renaissance to modern times is an optical illusion, and that a global and Asia-centered history can better locate the European experience in the shared histories of humanity. In Part Two of the work Hodgson shifts the focus and in a parallel move seeks to locate the history of Islamic civilization in a world historical framework. Finally, in Part Three he argues that in the end there is but one history--global history--and that all partial or privileged accounts must necessarily be resituated in a world historical context. The book also includes an introduction by the editor, Edmund Burke III, contextualizing Hodgson's work in world history and Islamic history.

Historia21 - Eleanor Jane Sterling, Martha Maud Hurley, Le Duc Minh...inh, Joyce A. Powzyk - Vietnam A Natural History 2006.jpg

This single volume presents the entire geograpy, geology, and natural history of Vietnam in lively, accessible language, making it the perfect companion for any visitor to Vietnam, with excellent and thorough information on the incredibly rich natural resources of the country, covering everything from orchids to monkeys. Species descriptions, of both flora and fauna, are well-written and engaging, and followed by short sections indicating where to find them. The accompanying illustrations are good, but too few; often many words are used to describe an animal, where a good picture would do a better and more useful job. The authors give an overview of conservation and environmental history that brings to bear the political legacy of the country. The diversity and fragility of Vietnam's natural history is stunning, and this book does an admirable job of celebrating that wealth, while clearly delineating what threatens it, including une

Women of the Ancient World - Barbara Levick - Juli a Domna; Syrian Empress (20007).jpg

This book covers Julia's life, and charts her travels throughout the Empire from Aswan to York during a period of profound upheaval, seeking the truth about this woman who inspired such extreme and contrasting views, exposing the instability of our sources about her, and characterizing a sympathetic, courageous, intelligent, and important woman.
This book contains a fresh reassessment of the one of the most significant figures of her time and questions:
Was Julia more powerful than earlier empresses?
Did she really promote despotism?
How seriously is her literary circle to be taken?

As part of a dynasty which used force and violence to preserve its rule, she was distrusted by its subjects; as a Syrian, she was the object of prejudice; as a woman with power, she was resented. On the other hand, Domna was the centre of a literary circle considered highly significant by nineteenth-century admirers.

Historia21 - Ina Baghdiantz McCabe - Orientalism in Early Modern F... Eurasian Trade, Exoticism and the Ancien Regime 2008.jpg

Francis I's ties with the Ottoman Empire marked the birth of court-sponsored Orientalism in France. Under Louis XIV, French society was transformed by cross-cultural contacts with the Ottomans, India, Persia, China, Siam and the Americas. The consumption of silk, cotton cloth, spices, coffee, tea, china, gems, flowers and other luxury goods transformed daily life and gave rise to a new discourse about the 'Orient' which in turn shaped ideas about economy and politics, specifically absolutism and the monarchy.
An original account of the ancient regime, this book highlights France's use of the exotic and analyzes French discourse about Islam and the 'Orient'.

Mark Morrisson - Modern Alchemy; Occultism and the Emergence of Atomic Theory (2007).jpg

Alchemists are generally held to be the quirky forefathers of science, blending occultism with metaphysical pursuits. Although many were intelligent and well-intentioned thinkers, the oft-cited goals of alchemy paint these antiquated experiments as wizardry, not scientific investigation. Whether seeking to produce a miraculous panacea or struggling to transmute lead into gold, the alchemists radical goals held little relevance to consequent scientific pursuits. Thus, the temptation is to view the transition from alchemy to modern science as one that discarded fantastic ideas about philosophers stones and magic potions in exchange for modest yet steady results. It has been less noted, however, that the birth of atomic science actually coincided with an efflorescence of occultism and esoteric religion that attached deep significance to questions about the nature of matter and energy.
Mark Morrisson challenges the widespread dismissal of alchemy as a largely insignificant historical footnote to science by prying into the revival of alchemy and its influence on the emerging subatomic sciences of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Morrisson demonstrates its surprising influence on the emerging subatomic sciences of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, Morrisson examines the resurfacing of occult circles during this time period and how their interest in alchemical tropes had a substantial and traceable impact upon the science of the day. Modern Alchemy chronicles several encounters between occult conceptions of alchemy and the new science, describing how academic chemists, inspired by the alchemy revival, attempted to transmute the elements; to make gold.
Examining scientists publications, correspondence, talks, and laboratory notebooks as well as the writings of occultists, alchemical tomes, and science-fiction stories, he argues that during the birth of modern nuclear physics, the trajectories of science and occultism---so often considered antithetical---briefly merged.

Michael Rice - Swifter than the Arrow; The Golden Hunting Hounds of Ancient Egypt (2006).jpg

Swifter than the Arrow explores a little-known aspect of life in Ancient Egypt, celebrating the Egyptians as the first known civilisation to have formed the special bond with the dog that persists today as the most remarkable and enduring of human-animal relationships. Five thousand years ago the Egyptians selected and bred hounds for the chase and as the loved companions of both the ruling classes and of less exalted folk. For more than twenty-five centuries they kept the breed true, a remarkable achievement to be counted alongside the development of stone architecture and the building of the pyramids, the invention of hieroglyphs, the creation of kingship and of the first nation-state in the world. Swifter than the Arrow also examines the evidence that hounds living today -- most notably modern breeds such as the so-called "Pharaoh Hound" -- are directly descended from the Egyptian hound. This unique book throws fresh light on our understanding of ancient Egypt while providing a completely fresh insight into the development of mankind's remarkable bond with the domesticated dog.

Louis D. Rubin, Jr. - The Summer the Archduke Died ; Essays on Wars and Warriors (2008).jpg

Louis D. Rubin Jr. is one of the biggest — biggest — names in Southern literature. He taught at Johns Hopkins, Hollins College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he retired as University Distinguished Professor of English.

Less known is Rubin’s role as a highly competent editor of military history. At Algonquin, he supervised the release of some first-rate books, such as Rod Paschall’s The Defeat of Imperial Germany. Now, in The Summer the Archduke Died, Rubin ponders a number of books “On Wars and Warriors,” and as always, his ruminations prove fascinating.Rubin is nothing if not meticulous. Though he belittles his own experience (an enlisted veteran of “The Good War,” he was never shipped overseas), he shows considerable courage and is not above calling even the great John Keegan to task when the great British war historian occasionally nods.

Rubin covers a great deal of ground, but his focus lies on World War I — a war, he argued, that never got the attention it deserved. Although it produced great literature from Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms to Robert Graves Goodbye to All That to the poetry of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, the historians have generally shied away. The slaughter is horrid to contemplate. (One memorial at St. Cyr, the French equivalent of West Point, simply notes “The Class of 1914″ — apparently, there were not enough survivors to note.) It was also a war of stagnation, as increased firepower forced the armies into trenches. There was none of the derring-do of a Rommel or a Patton, of paratroop landings or daring maneuver.

Rubin, however, argues that World War II, in effect was simply the First World War resumed after a time-out. He argues that the generals were not the doddering old butchers they’re often stereotyped as being (although it is hard, extremely hard, to acquit someone as cold-blooded as Douglas Haig entirely). In fact, the great innovations of World War II — the evolution of the tank, the dominating role of air power — had their start in the trenches late in the First War, as generals tried anything, anything to break the stalemate. Had the conflict of 1914-18 dragged on another year — and it very nearly did — some of these might have flowered sooner.

Reviewing contemporary texts, Rubin deftly catches the challenge and frustration of trying to catch the fog of war in a bottle — of seeing things both from the perspective of a grunt on a line and a general well in the rear. (The First War removed the great commanders from the front lines, but did not give them the tools for command control, such as radio, that would serve the World War II commanders well.)

Historia21 - Robert B. Bruce, Iain Dickie, Kevin Kiley, Michael F... 1792-1815 Equipment, Combat Skills, and Tactics 2008.jpg

I've read, over the years, a few books on Napoleon and the wars he fought. In many ways, this book is an essential primer, or at least a very useful tool for the reader who's not an expert on Napoleon, but who nonetheless wishes to know something about warfare during the era, at a nuts-and-bolts level. The book is divided into five chapters, covering infantry; cavalry; command and control; artillery, engineers and sieges; and naval warfare. Each of these chapters is lavishly illustrated with pictures, both color plates and black and white drawings. Each chapter includes a discussion of several battles, which illustrate what the text is saying. For instance, the chapter on artillery tactics includes several pages on the Battle of Friedland, where the French artillery literally blasted a hole in the middle of the Russian front. Each of these accounts of a battle is accompanied by a two-page 3D map of the battlefield showing the maneuvers of the units involved. .....
