Confronting the contemporary poststructuralist debate from the perspective of cultural historiography, The Expansion of England presents an historical study of race and ethnicity. Specifically, it provides an account, both theoretical and applied, of the combination of sexual, racial and ethnic identities, underpinning and shaping the experiences of English men and women in the nineteenth century. Although very accessible, this book will be received seriously by both theorists and historians.

Sean Mcconville - Irish Political Prisoners 1848-1 922 (2002).jpg

This is the most wide-ranging study ever published of political violence and the punishment of Irish political offenders from 1848 to the founding of the Irish Free State in 1922. Those who chose violence to advance their Irish nationalist beliefs ranged from gentlemen revolutionaries to those who openly embraced terrorism or even full-scale guerilla war. Se¡n McConville provides a comprehensive survey of Irish revolutionary struggle, matching chapters on punishment of offenders with descriptions and analysis of their campaigns. Government's response to political violence was determined by a number of factors, including not only the nature of the offences but also interest and support from the United States and Australia, as well as current objectives of Irish policy.

A. Burton - Gender, Sexuality and Colonial Moderni ties (1999).jpg

This book considers the ways in which modernity was constructed, in all its incompleteness, through colonialism. Using a variety of archival resources and equally diverse methodologies, the authors trace modernity's unstable foundations in the slippages and ruptures of colonial gender and sexual politics.

Martin Kitchen - A History Of Modern Germany 1800- 2000 (2006).jpg

This book fills an important gap by providing a broad survey of modern German history from 1800-2000, thus setting GermanyA’s fragmented history within its full context. Organised chronologically, the book deals with all the major watersheds in German history, including the unification, the rise and fall of the German Empire, the emergence of the Weimar Republic, and its submergence by the Third Reich, the collapse of the Third Reich with the Second World War, the birth of the Federal Republic, the collapse of Communism and re-unification. Written from the perspective of post-reunification Germany, the book allows readers to take a long view of German history and so to trace continuities as well as changes. Kitchen addresses cultural matters such as class, religion and gender, as well as political and economic history. He also pays attention to regional history, rather than focusing on the dominant role of Prussia.
This book covers not only the experience of one of the major nations of the modern world a?’ but also its defining role in the wider history of Europe and the world.

Andrea M Berlin - The First Jewish Revolt, Archaeo logy, History and Ideology (2002).jpg

The First Jewish Revolt against Rome is arguably the most decisive event in the history of Judaism and Christianity. The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE by the Roman General Titus forced a transformation in structure and form for both of these fraternal religions. Yet despite its importance, little has been written on the First Revolt, its causes, implications and the facts surrounding it, In this volume, Andrea M. Berlin and J. Andrew Overman have gathered the foremost scholars on the period to discuss and debate this pivotal historical event. The contributions explore both Roman and Jewish perspectives on the Revolt, looking at its history and archaeology, and finally examining the ideology and interpretation of the revolt in subsequent history and myth.

C. W. R. Long - British Pro-Consuls in Egypt, 1914 -1929, The Challenge of Nationalism (2004).jpg

With World War I and Egypt's colorful politics as background, C.W.R. Long tells the story of four proconsuls (McMahon, Wingate, Allenby and Lloyd), their principal opponent, Sa'ad Zaghul, and the great events of the time - the rise of the WAFD party, the uprising of 1919, the murder of Sir Lee Stack and the Allenby ultimatum. He sheds new light on the strife of members of the High Commission among themselves and the Foreign Office, on the struggle between Egypt and Britain for ownership of the Sudan, on Egypt's fight for independence and on the failure of democracy to take root in the country.

Historia21 - Michael D. Glascock - Archaelogical Chemistry, Analyt...cal Techniques and Archaeological Interpretation 2007.jpg

Archaeologists, historians, chemists, and physicists have employed a variety of chemical and physical approaches to study artifacts and historical objects since at least the late 18th century. During the past 50 years, the chemistry of archaeological materials has increasingly been used to address a broad spectrum of anthropological topics, including preservation, dating, nativity, exchange, provenance, and manufacturing technology. This book brings together 28 papers that address how various analytical techniques can be used to address specific archaeological questions. Chemists, archaeologists, geologists, graduate students, and others in related disciplines who are investigating the use of archaeometric techniques will find this book of interest.

Wu Xiao An - Chinese Business in the Making of a M alay State, 1882-1941, Kedah and Penang (2003).jpg

This book examines how Chinese family and business networks, focused around activities such as revenue farming, including opium, the rice trade, and pawnbroking, and related legal and labour organization activities, were highly influential in the process of state formation in Malaya. It shows how Chinese family and business networks were flexible and dynamic, and were closely interlocked with economic and social structures, around which government, and states, developed. It considers the crucial role of wealth and power in the process of state formation, and challenges accepted views of Chinese ethnicity and migration.

Willi Fortescue - France and 1848, The end of mona rchy (2005).jpg

1848 was a year of revolution throughout Europe. In France, the monarchy of Louis Philippe was overthrown by revolution, manhood suffrage was proclaimed and the second republic was declared. In the subsequent elections, against all popular expectations, the right-wing candidates were victorious. In this comprehensive and authoritative study, which provides an analysis of original sources, considers recent research and offers new interpretations of events, William Fortescue explains why. Examining the economic, social and political crises, France and 1848: the end of monarchy evaluates the political history of France during the revolution of 1848 and the French political culture of the time. This work will be of interest to all students of nineteenth-century European history, political scientists and all those with an interest in the historical development of French political culture.

Hans J. Massaquoi - Destined to Witness, Growing U p Black in Nazi Germany (2001).jpg

This is a story of the unexpected. In Destined to Witness, Hans Massaquoi has crafted a beautifully rendered memoir -- an astonishing true tale of how he came of age as a black child in Nazi Germany. The son of a prominent African and a German nurse, Hans remained behind with his mother when Hitler came to power, due to concerns about his fragile health, after his father returned to Liberia. Like other German boys, Hans went to school; like other German boys, he swiftly fell under the Fuhrer's spell. So he was crushed to learn that, as a black child, he was ineligible for the Hitler Youth. His path to a secondary education and an eventual profession was blocked. He now lived in fear that, at any moment, he might hear the Gestapo banging on the door -- or Allied bombs falling on his home. Ironic,, moving, and deeply human, Massaquoi's account of this lonely struggle for survival brims with courage and intelligence.

Chris J. Dalglish - Rural Society in the Age of Re ason, An Archaeology of the Emergence of Modern Li fe in the Southern Scottish Highlands (2003).jpg

Historia21 - Chris J. Dalglish - Rural Society in the Age of Reason...f Modern Life in the Southern Scottish Highlands 2003.jpg

Understanding the emergence of modern society is understanding how today's social relationships came to be historically structured as they are. This work, focused on the Southern Scottish Highlands, is particularly concerned with the growth to predominance of the social relations of capitalism, where the central place of the individual, defined in isolation from wider society, relates to individualized notions of private property and land ownership, land rights and tenancy.
This shift in importance of relationships was achieved through improvement, a process involving fundamental change in the ways people engaged with each other. Improvement emphasized the individualized relationships of capitalism over those of community or kin, and this was in large measure achieved through the restructuring of the material, physical environment. This essential reading will be of importance to archaeologists specializing in capitalism, and historical, as well as to archaeology and Scottish archaeologists and historians.

Kevin Blackburn - Did Singapore Have to Fall, Chur chill and the Impregnable Fortress (2003).jpg

On February 15, 1942 Singapore surrendered. It was the beginning of the end for the British Empire. Almost before the firing stopped, the controversy started. Could Singapore have been saved if more tanks or aircraft had been provided, or if Britain had denied Japan landing sites in Thailand? Could the tide have been turned as late as February 15, if fewer Australian troops had deserted? The glut of scapegoats-Churchill, British commanders, Australians-creates the need for a work which will cover the widest range of issues clearly and briefly. This book does that, providing an account of everything from prewar planning to postwar commemoration by British, Australians and Singaporeans. But it also unveils the relationship between 'Fortress Singapore' and the Fall. It shows that Churchill was against a long battle for north Malaya. In his mind's eye, Singapore remained a fortress with a moat and huge coastal gums. If the defenders fell back to Johore and Singapore, the enemy would have to assemble a vastsiege train in order to pulverize the bastion's strong points. When Churchill realized the reality, that Singapore was 'the near naked island', he called for a final blood sacrifice to redeem the honor of race and empire. This book explains what Fortress Singapore was to Churchill, what it was in reality, and how it has been remembered by Singaporeans, Australians, British and Japanese. It also puts Churchill's decision in the context of the struggles in the Middle East and Russia, and allows Churchill and contemporaries to speak for themselves. It will help students and general readers make up their own minds on the most crucial questions, which can be summed up as: "Did Singapore Have to Fall"?

Jason McElligott, David L. Smith - Royalists and R oyalism during the English Civil War (2007).jpg

Much ink has been spent on accounts of the English Civil Wars of the mid-seventeenth century yet royalism has been largely neglected. This pioneering volume of essays by leading scholars in the field seeks to fill that significant gap in our understanding by focusing on those who took up arms for the king. The royalists described were not reactionary, absolutist extremists but pragmatic, moderate men who were not so different in temperament or background from the vast majority of those who decided to side with, or were forced by circumstances to side with, Parliament and its army. The essays force us to think beyond the simplistic dichotomy between royalist 'absolutists' and 'constitutionalists' and suggest instead that allegiances were much more fluid and contingent than has hitherto been recognized. This is a major contribution to the political and intellectual history of the Civil Wars and of early modern England more generally.
