Europe 1780--1830 rapidly established itself as a standard introduction to European history in the age of the French Revolution and its aftermath when it first appeared. Now for the first time the book has been fully revised, updated and expanded. The half-century covered constitutes one of the most complex, eventful and rapidly changing of any in Europe's history. It is a period whose emphasis on conflict and political crisis combines daring innovation with the stubborn persistence of many older attitudes and patterns of human behaviour. Professor Ford explores these tensions throughout; and he gives his readers a powerful sense of the extraordinary energy, in every aspect of human activity, that characterised the time.

Harry Hearder - Europe in the nineteenth century, 1830-1880 (1966).jpg

The period between 1830 and 1880 was one of immense activity, radical political change, and striking economic and social growth in Europe. The major themes of the struggles between individuals, parties and classes within the state, and between the states themselves are explored within the context of a study of the administration, organisation and growth of European society.
The whole book has been fully revised and updated, particularly the section on German history. Professor Hearder has also given greater consideration to many important issues, such as, popular movements of protest and insurrection, life-styles, and the role of women.

Matthew Smith Anderson - Europe in the Eighteenth Century, 1713-1783 (1987).jpg

The first edition of this book was hailed by the journal History as 'much the best English textbook in the field', and the third, fully revised, edition is likely to keep it so. Professor Anderson surveys all aspects of European life in the eighteenth century. As before, most of the discussion is on a continent-wide basis; the British Isles are treated as an integral part of the continent; and the book is particularly strong in the attention it devotes to the important but often neglected nations of eastern Europe. It also deals with the European colonial empires, and with the extra-European cultural influences that now affected the life the continent. Furthermore, this edition draws together all the recent important scholarship on the period.

H. G. Koenigsberger, George L. Mosse, G. Q. Bowler - Europe in the Sixteenth Century (1990).jpg

This edition has been revised, rewritten and expanded. It examines 16th century Europe as a complex, but interconnected whole, and explores the different political structures of Europe, such as the monarchies and city-republics, how they operated and related to one another. In particular it incorporates the most recent scholarship in this field and emphasizes the increasing importance of town-life in the 16th century, and the economic background of political change. In includes an entirely new chapter on "social life", taking into account and recent work on demographic history, attitudes to women, the family, and on the impact of education, war and disease, concentrating on the Reformation and the religious and intellectual movements that fuelled it.

D. H. Pennington - Europe in the Seventeenth Centu ry, 2nd Ed. (1989).jpg

As before, the new edition of this widely-used survey is in two main parts. The first analyzes the major themes of 17th-century European history on a continent-wide basis. The second part moves on the outline political, diplomatic and military events in the various states and nations of the time. France has the fullest treatment, although this new edition devotes much greater space to Eastern Europe, while other countries, including Britain, are discussed on a regional basis. For the new edition all the chapters have been rewritten to take account of recent scholarship. Moreover, many new topics are discussed: the family; crime; the impact of printing; climate; population and social mobility; Islam in 17th-century Europe. Throughout, the book emphasizes the history of the period of a process of enquiry and argument rather than incontrovertible fact.

Jim Bradbury - The Medieval Siege (1992).jpg

In medieval warfare, the siege predominated: for every battle, there were hundreds of sieges. Yet the rich and vivid history of siege warfare has been consistently neglected. Jim Bradbury's panoramic survey takes the history of siege warfare in Europe from the late Roman Empire to the 16th century, and includes sieges in Byzantium, Eastern Europe and the areas affected by the Crusades. Within this broad sweep of time and place, he finds, not that enormous changes occurred, but that the rules and methods of siege warfare remained remarkably constant. Included are detailed studies of some of the major sieges including Constantinople and Chateau-Gaillard. Throughout, Bradbury supports his narrative with chronicles and letters. First-hand accounts of danger, famine and endurance bring the acute reality of siege warfare clearly before the reader.

Simon Jones - Underground Warfare 1914-1918.jpg

Simon Jones's graphic history of underground warfare during the Great War uses personal reminiscences to convey the danger and suspense of this unconventional form of conflict.
Concentrating on the struggle for ascendancy by the British tunnelling companies on the Western Front, Jones's wide-ranging study also tells the story of the little known but fascinating subterranean battles fought in the French sectors of the Western Front.
It also includes the gripping conflict between the Austrians and the Italians in the Alps, described in English for the first time.
Vivid personal testimony from soldiers in opposing armies is combined with a lucid account of the ruthless underground fight for supremacy, together with a gripping insight into the technical challenges and the increasingly lethal tactics the tunnelling companies adopted.

James M. Steele - The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Ho mes through World History, 3 Volume Set (2009).jpg

The house, throughout history, in every place in the world, has been built to provide shelter from the elements. The dwellings that have resulted are as different as the people that have built them, the social norms that prevailed at the time and place in which they were built and the natural environment that they adapted to. Studying them now in a comprehensive way allows us to understand the social, political, economic and religious conditions that existed for their inhabitants. They are a three-dimensional record of culture. Twenty-four pages of color images, along with black and white images through three volumes, illustrate the homes of people throughout the world. The volumes cover ancient times to the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution, and the Post-Industrial Revolution to the Present.

Elizabeth C. Robertson - Space and Spatial Analysi s in Archaeology (2006).jpg

Spatial analysis is the archaeology of space and place and is concerned with the creation of a cultural landscape focusing on archaeoastronomy, geoarchaeology, and ancient landscapes. Incorporating emerging technology such as GPS positioning and new forms of diagnostic imaging, spatial analysis can enable scientists to study the wider landscape of ancient human settlements. The ability to peer through time and clearly view the distribution of settlements and particular landforms and to determine resource areas provides researchers with invaluable information regarding the social relations, economy, and ecology of any community in the distant past.

Osprey - Fortress 91 - Samuel Rocca - The Fortific ations of Ancient Israel and Judah 1200-586 BC (20 10).jpg

This book provides a detailed study of the fortifications of the founders of ancient Israel from the time of their first settlement in the Middle East, through the periods of the united and divided kingdoms, until the sack of Jerusalem in 586 BC. It begins in the period of Israelite settlement in the First Iron Age period (1200–1000 BC). The extensive fortifications created by the famous kings Saul, David and Solomon are covered, including Gibeah, Jerusalem, Megiddo, Hazor and Gezer, which are described in the Bible. The period of the Divided Monarchy saw the creation of two separate political entities: the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The enemies the two kingdoms faced in this period included Moab, Edom, and the Arameans as well as the mighty empires of Assyria, Babylonia and Egypt. This book is a must-have for fans of warfare in the ancient Middle East.

Historia21 - Simon R. Doubleday, David Coleman, Giles Tremlett - I..., Islam, the West, and the Relevance of the Past 2008.jpg

If the idea of the medieval has been widely deployed in the colonial and neocolonial West as a marker of cultural backwardness, the Anglo-American perspective has often regarded Spain as part of a historically underdeveloped world and as a late-comer to Protestant/Enlightenment traditions of democracy, tolerance, and progress. Yet the many cultural dimensions of medieval Iberia make it pressingly relevant to current critiques of western modernity. This volume, which brings into dialogue historians and literary scholars in medieval and modern Iberian cultures, interrogates the contemporary significance of the distant Spanish past, particularly in regard to tensions in the relationship between the West and Islam. Rejecting an illusory space of neutrality, the search for relevance is envisioned as an ethically and politically necessary form of inquiry.

Stephen Bown - Scurvy, How a Surgeon, a Mariner, a nd a Gentlemen Solved the Greatest Medical Mystery of the Age of Sail (2005).jpg

Historia21 - Stephen Bown - Scurvy, How a Surgeon, a Mariner, and a... the Greatest Medical Mystery of the Age of Sail 2005.jpg

Scurvy took a terrible toll in the Age of Sail, killing more sailors than were lost in all sea battles combined. The threat of the disease kept ships close to home and doomed those vessels that ventured too far from port. The willful ignorance of the royal medical elite, who endorsed ludicrous medical theories based on speculative research while ignoring the life-saving properties of citrus fruit, cost tens of thousands of lives and altered the course of many battles at sea. The cure for scurvy ranks among the greatest of human accomplishments, yet its impact on history has, until now, been largely ignored.
From the earliest recorded appearance of the disease in the sixteenth century, to the eighteenth century, where a man had only half a chance of surviving the scourge, to the early nineteenth century, when the British conquered scurvy and successfully blockaded the French and defeated Napoleon, Scurvy is a medical detective story for the ages, the fascinating true story of how James Lind (the surgeon), James Cook (the mariner), and Gilbert Blane (the gentleman) worked separately to eliminate the dreaded affliction.
Scurvy is an evocative journey back to the era of wooden ships and sails, when the disease infiltrated every aspect of seafaring life: press gangs "recruit" mariners on the way home from a late night at the pub; a terrible voyage in search of riches ends with a hobbled fleet and half the crew heaved overboard; Cook majestically travels the South Seas but suffers an unimaginable fate. Brimming with tales of ships, sailors, and baffling bureaucracy, Scurvy is a rare mix of compelling history and classic adventure story.

Sam Taplin - Mummies & Pyramids (2002).jpg

The ancient Egyptian way of death has left us a rich legacy of information about a way of life for which we have no other record. What happens to people after they die? The Egyptians thought if they mummified a dead person, his spirit would live forever. At first nature did the job; the desert sun dried and preserved bodies buried in shallow sandpit graves. Mummifying methods became more elaborate with time, as did after-life dwelling places. Eventually, the Egyptians built the largest known tombs--the pyramids--in which wealthy Egyptians were buried with food, household items, and treasure. The ancient Egyptian way of death has left us a rich legacy of information about a way of life of which there is no other record.

Bernard Dumpleton - The Story Of The Paddle Steame r (2002).jpg

The paddle steamer holds a unique place in the history of maritime engineering. When the engineers of the early 19th century experimented with steamboats they chose the paddle wheel as the form of propulsion. Within 20 years the paddle steamers were at work on inland waters and short sea passages. The first ocean-going steamships were paddlers. They were the link between sail and screw, a role they performed for nearly 60 years. But in shallow waters they prevailed for over 150 years. Plying between the seaside piers and along the major rivers they were as familiar to holidaymakers as Punch and Judy shows and donkey rides. The deep-sea sailors called them "Butterfy boats", but they were by no means as frail as the name suggested. In the two world wars they served alongside the warships of the Royal Navy and had their finest hour during the Dunkirk evacuation. They were graceful, elegant ships, but in the jet-age too slow and uneconomical. In the 1950s they went to the breaker's yards in droves, and now there are only a few left. This text tells the story of the paddle steamers, and of the men who built, owned and sailed them.

Raffael Scheck - Mothers of the Nation, Right-Wing Women in Weimar Germany (2004).jpg

What role did right-wing women play in the Nazi rise to power? Mothers of the Nation analyzes the work of these women in the Weimar Republic. The author shows that they refused to stand up primarily for women's interests and instead invoked the Volksgemeinschaft (community of the people), a vision of harmony and cooperation. The emphasis on the Volksgemeinschaft made it difficult for female conservatives to fight for specific women's rights. Yet it also allowed them to paste over the conflicts between interest groups that tore apart Germany's bourgeois parties. The ways in which these women sought to contain the fragmentation that ultimately rendered their parties defenseless against the Nazis sheds new light on Weimar politics. Bringing the controversial story of right-wing women to life, this book offers a compelling account of gender and politics during a crucial period in German history.

Sandra Pott - The Berlin Refuge, 1680-1780, Learni ng and Science in European Context (2003).jpg

This volume deals with the intellectual Huguenot Refuge (ca 1680–1780), discussing its philosophical, theological, historical, and literary aspects in European context. It uses Berlin as its regional point of departure: In the French-Protestant community of Berlin, the erudites rapidly established networks which pursued a very wide range of interest, communicating with every Protestant scholar who might contribute to the dissemination of Enlightened thought.
The first part of the book, therefore, introduces the biggest and most complex centre of the Refuge in Germany. Whereas the second and third part examine different fields of knowledge, the fourth focusses on the topic of dissemination. All contributions present new material–be it on 'Huguenot' hermeneutics, journalism, history, or on the relationship between Berlin and the United Provinces.
