More than three decades have passed since David Sear published Greek Coins & Their Values, his revision of Gilbert Askew’s A Catalogue of Greek Coins published by B. A. Seaby in 1951. Since then, the field of ancient numismatics and the hobby of collecting ancient coins have changed so much that now Greek Coins & Their Values would require a complete revision to include all of the most current numismatic information available, list the many new types and varieties unknown to Sear, and determine an approximate sense of rarity for all of these issues. In order to encompass this new material and create a viable reference for the beginning and specialized collector, such a handbook would have to be more than the two volumes which Sear found necessary.

Frits van Oostrom - The Netherlands in a Nutshell, Highlights from Dutch History and Culture (2009).jpg

Many think they know the legends behind tulipmania and the legacy of the Dutch East India Company, but what basic knowledge of Dutch history should be passed on to future generations? This overview of historical highlights, assembled by a number of specialists in consultation with the Dutch general public, provides a thought-provoking and timely answer. The democratic process behind the volume is reminiscent of the way in which the Netherlands has excelled for centuries at collective craftsmanship, and says as much about the Netherlands as does the outcome of the opinions voiced. The Netherlands in a Nutshell offers a mine of information for visitors to the Netherlands, and should appeal to anyone interested in the history of this fascinating and multi-faceted land in the heart of Europe.

Brian Currid - A National Acoustics, Music and Ma ss Publicity in Weimar and Nazi Germany (2006).jpg

A sound track of Germany in the early twentieth century might conjure military music and the voice of Adolf Hitler rising above a cheering crowd. In A National Acoustics, Brian Currid challenges this reductive characterization by investigating the transformations of music in mass culture from the Weimar Republic to the end of the Nazi regime.A
Offering a nuanced analysis of how publicity was constructed through radio programming, print media, popular song, and film, Currid examines how German citizens developed an emotional investment in the nation and other forms of collectivity that were tied to the sonic experience. Reading in detail popular genres of music the Schlager (or hit), so-called gypsy music, and jazz he offers a complex view of how they played a part in the creation of German culture.
A National Acoustics contributes to a new understanding of what constitutes the public sphere. In doing so, it illustrates the contradictions between Germany social and cultural histories and how the technologies of recording not only were vital to the emergence of a national imaginary but also exposed the fault lines in the contested terrain of mass communication.
Brian Currid is an independent scholar who lives in Berlin.

Douglas Brodie - A History of British Labour Law, 1867-1945 (2003).jpg

In the UK the received wisdom has tended to be that, historically, British labour law was abstentionist or non-interventionist, best epitomised by the words of Lord Wedderburn who has written that '...collective bargaining has developed in a system which depends very little on the law, which is covered by very few decisions of the judges, and which is controlled by statute very little, if at all.'. It is not until we reach the Industrial Relations Act 1971 that we discover the first attempt in peacetime to move to a legally regulated system. However, the accuracy of this non-interventionist depiction appears to very much depend on the period which is examined, which is why an historical perspective is needed in order to understand the significance of the current shape and scope of British labour law.
The aim of this work is to re-examine the received interpretation by looking at both the role given to law, and that anticipated and argued for it, during the most formative period of its development, the period between 1867 and 1945. The book also revisits the debate about war-time legislation which has tended to be viewed as standing apart from mainstream labour law but which the author demonstrates to have important linkages to the past and present.

John Dickie - Darkest Italy, The Nation and Stereo types of the Mezzogiorno, 1860-1900 (1999).jpg

Defining a nation's identity can involve the use of an "other," a foreign and alien group to which the bourgeoisie can (favorably) compare themselves. For newly united Italy in the late 19th century, that group was its own southern inhabitants, especially Sicilians. Southerners were seen as violent, ill-mannered brigands and peasants, barely able to function in a civilized, industrialized society. Dickie (Italian studies, Univ. College, London) sketches aspects of this dialectic in four short essays, examining the objectification of southerners by politicians, writers, and the public at large. Dickie's tone is dense and theoretical enough to limit its audience to advanced scholars. Some of the sections are too narrow and specific, while others try to tackle too many topics too quickly. While some good points are made, the result is somewhat esoteric. For academic libraries with strong Italy collections only.ARobert Persing, Univ. of Pennsylvania Lib., Philadelphia.

Marta V. Vicente - Clothing the Spanish Empire, Fa milies and the Calico Trade in the Early Modern At lantic World (2006).jpg

Historia21 - Marta V. Vicente - Clothing the Spanish Empire, Famil... Calico Trade in the Early Modern Atlantic World 2006.jpg

"This lively, innovative, fascinating study shows just how important the family was in the calico trade of the early modern Atlantic world. This important book rethinks not just the history of the family but also some core assumptions of economic history; it is a remarkable achievement."
--Barry Reay, Professor of History, University of Auckland (New Zealand), and author of Microhistories: Demography, Society, and Culture in Rural England, 1800-1930

"Marta V. Vicente has written a history of calico as lively, colorful, and vivid as the printed fabrics themselves. Using a model of family and household to explore a crucial period in economic history, she presents the stories of families whose networks of blood radiated from the industrial and commercial center of early modern Barcelona to span the Atlantic world. This history is not limited to Spain and its empire, however, for Vicente questions traditional assumptions about the development of industrial capitalism, such as the mutual antagonism of workshops and factories, the economic functions of guilds, the significance of social capital, and the roles of sentiment and emotion in economic adventures."
--Mary Elizabeth Perry, Professor of History, Occidental College

"This book makes us rethink Spain's weak industrialization as Vicente vividly demonstrates the strength and innovation of Barcelona's calico industry. However, more than providing just an economic history, by viewing the calico industry through the lens of family history, Vicente has unraveled the changing fortunes and fashions of the men and women of eighteenth century Spain."
--Allyson M. Poska, Associate Professor of History, and author of Women and Authority in Early Modern Spain

"Examining the calico industry during the eighteenth century by bringing in family and gender history, Vicente provides a depth of analysis unequalled by any other study of the textile trade and fashion in the early modern Spanish empire. Meticulously researched and lucidly presented, this book greatly deepens our understanding of the complex role of women and the family within the contours of one of the most vibrant industries of the eighteenth century. Readers of the stories of familial and commercial businesses that Vicente weaves into her study will be enriched by this careful piece of social history."
--Sherry Velasco, Professor of Spanish, University of Southern California

Mary Dockray-Miller - Motherhood and Mothering in Anglo-Saxon England (2003).jpg

Motherhood and Mothering in Anglo-Saxon England sifts through the historical evidence to describe and analyze a world of violence and intrigue, where mothers needed to devise their own systems to protect, nurture, and teach their children. Mary Dockray-Miller casts a maternal eye on Bede, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and Beowulf to reveal mothers who created rituals, genealogies, and institutions for their children and themselves. Little-known historical figures--queens, abbesses, and other noblewomen--used their power in court and convent to provide education, medical care, and safety for their children, showing us that mothers of a thousand years ago and mothers of today had many of the same goals and aspirations.

Michal Kobialka - Medieval Practices of Space (200 0).jpg

Interprets space and place in the medieval era.
A glance at medieval maps tells us that cartographers of the Middle Ages divided space differently than we do today. In the great mappae mundi, for instance, Jerusalem takes center stage, with an image of the crucified Christ separating one place from another. The architects of medieval cathedrals manipulated space to clarify the roles and status of anyone who crossed the threshold. Even in the most everyday context, space was allotted according to gender and class and was freighted with infinitely subtle and various meanings. The contributors to this volume cross disciplinary and theoretical boundaries to read the words, metaphors, images, signs, poetic illusions, and identities with which medieval men and women used space or place to add meaning to the world.

Historia21 - Patricia Sieber - Theaters of Desire, Authors, Readers...roduction of Early Chinese Song-Drama, 1300-2000 2003.jpg

Blending a flair for textual nuance with theoretical engagement, Theaters of Desire not only contributes to our understanding of the most influential form of early Chinese song-drama in local and international cultural contexts, but adds a Chinese perspective to the scholarship on print culture, authorship, and the regulatory discourses of desire. The book argues that, particularly between 1550 and 1680, Chinese elite editors rewrote and printed early plays and songs, so-called Yuan-dynasty zaju and sanqu, to imagine and embody new concepts of authorship, readership and desire, an interpretation that contrasts starkly with the national and racially-oriented reception of song-drama developed by European critics after 1735 and subsequently modified by Japanese and Chinese critics after 1897. By analyzing the critical and material facets of the early song and play tradition across different historical periods and cultural settings, Theaters of Desire presents a compelling case study of literary canon formation.

Paul Gillen, Devleena Ghosh - Colonialism and Mode rnity (2007).jpg

For five centuries, colonialism and modernity have profoundly shaped the cultures of the world. This book traces these interacting long-term historical processes, and the parallel history of anti-colonial movements and ideas. It outlines the rise to global dominance of Europe since the 16th century, and the attendant modernity that shaped and defined this rise. Gillen and Ghosh show how colonialism and modernity dramatically changed the lives of the colonised peoples, the invading settlers who established overseas colonies, those who remained in Europe, and the diasporas created by invasions, slavery, indentured labour and voluntary migration.

Historia21 - Paulos Milkias, Getachew Metaferia - The Battle of Adw...as Historic Victory Against European Colonialism 2005.jpg

Ethiopia's warriors earned an outstanding reputation over a hundred years ago.
In the 19th-century Scramble for Africa, when the Europeans carved up an entire continent for exploitation, Africans won a solitary, shocking, glorious victory at Adwa (Ethiopia). The most celebrated military operation involving the Africans and the Europeans since the time of Hannibal, this emblematic victory still resounds in the minds of Africans and the African diaspora as promise of potential and an illustration of the dictum, strength in unity.
Nine scholars analyze the unique Ethiopian victory at Adwa, pondering the factors that brought success, the putative missed opportunities for securing the future integrity of the Ethiopian territory, and the lessons to be learned.
Rising above their regional rivalries and local concerns, all facets of this multi-ethnic society pulled together to defeat the Italian invaders who were armed with vastly more sophisticated technology and had the support of all of Europe.
For the victors it was decisive; for the vanquished, catastrophic. The Italian colonialist soldiers were crushed. Their casualty figure was 70%; all their artillery pieces were captured, one out of four of their generals was taken prisoner and two of the remaining as well as almost half of their staff officers were killed on the battlefield.
The event and its implications have much to say about Ethiopia s subsequent development, the secession of Eritrea, and relations with external powers. It also reveals much about the machinations of global powers and the dangers they pose to weaker nations, and most specifically international influence in Africa.
The Ethiopian victory at the Battle of Adwa has remained a very important event in the shared recollection of the entire African people. It is the only secular episode in the whole history of Africa that has been celebrated for more than a century with unabated popular enthusiasm.
A phenomenon such as Adwa is a complex nexus of various historical processes with wide ranging but as yet not fully explored meanings. The contributors to this collection show that Adwa does not only reflect its time, but that it also transcends it, and that the aspirations and meanings that flow from it have been a powerful constitutive force in the rise and evolution of modern Africa Indeed, it is an event that awakened the hope for emancipation and the struggle against colonialism and racism among Africans in the colonies and in the Diaspora.
