"Thomas Foster and his colleagues present an excellent study of the Lower Creeks on the Chattahoochee River during the period 1715-1836. The volume includes a detailed reconstruction of the location of Creek towns, a detailed ceramic study, architectural study, and subsistence studies."--Marvin T. Smith, Valdosta State University

The Muskogee Indians who lived along the lower Chattahoochee and Flint River watersheds had, and continue to have, a profound influence on the development of the southeastern United States, especially during the historic period (circa 1540-1836). Our knowledge of that culture is limited to what we can learn from their descendants and from archaeological and historical sources. Combining historical documents and archaeological research on all known Lower Muskogee Creek sites, Thomas Foster has accurately pinpointed town locations discussed in the literature and reported in contemporary Creek oral histories. In so doing, this volume synthesizes the archaeological diversity and variation within the Lower Creek Indians between 1715 and 1836. The book is a study of archaeological methods because it analyzes the temporal and geographic variation within a single archaeological phase and the biases of that archaeological data. Foster's research segregates the variation between Lower Creek Indian towns through a regional and direct historic approach. Consequently, he is able to discern the unique differences between individual Creek Indian towns. Foster argues that the study of Creek Indian history should be at the level of towns instead of archaeological phases and that there is significant continuity between the culture of the Historic Period Indians and the Prehistoric and Protohistoric peoples.

Terry Reed - Herds and Hermits, America's Lone Wol ves and Submissive Sheep (2009.jpg

As a nation often celebrated for its commitment to independence and fearless individualism, America has at the same time learned to despise, discredit and dismiss the solitary and reclusive mentality. To the contrary, this inquiry is a paean vigorously endorsing America's lone wolves, cultural hermits, and all such solitary, marginalized figures who are the cultural bedrock of the nation that detests them. While we look up to literary loners like Poe and Melville and Dickinson, the man in the street is a compulsive joiner of clubs, and herds from university frats to the Order of the Pink Goat. Contrasting independent thinkers, nonconformists, and individualists with the team player, the company man, and the go-along-to-get along mentality, the book examines America's heroes real and imaginary, and asks where our values really belong. This is a broad-spectrum, academically-oriented book, an historical, sociological and ideological examination of the continuing acrimonious mutual conflict waged between America s loners and joiners. Divided into five chapters, it is generously researched, provocatively iconoclastic, contrarian and comical. The initial chapter defines and copiously illustrates the plight of individuality and its collision with collaboration in American life. It then moves from classical and renaissance culture and philosophy into the subject as it is tellingly, abundantly and amusingly illustrated in American literature from Franklin through Emerson, Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Whitman and Twain. The second chapter advances into the 20th and 21st centuries, exploring the essence of the conflict as illustrated biologically, socially and anecdotally the object being to elucidate the causes of division between the minority who function well as hermits and the majority that inexorably forms itself into insidious herds. Chapter 3, What Price Affiliation? examines such nefarious matters as Group Think, the rise of corporate culture and trade unionism. The fourth chapter examines even more intensively the intellectual and emotional costs of fraternal life. The fifth, final chapter looks closely at the American intellectual as loner and outcast.

Wayne Mutza - The A-1 Skyraider in Vietnam, The Sp ad's Last War (2003).jpg

Through its remarkable service during the war in Southeast Asia, the Skyraider became legendary. It served with distinction in the hands of U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and South Vietnamese Air Force pilots, who took the war to the enemy, often at low altitude and in the face of devastating antiaircraft fire. And it suffered heavy losses. The Skyraiders versatility and the mettle of its pilots were unmatched. This book takes not only a look at an old airplane, but at the warriors who flew and maintained the machine they called the Spad. This volume captures the essence of combat in the Spad, and explains the broad range of Spad operations. The text, which is rich with the narratives of Spad pilots and ground crew, is complemented by over 300 original photographs, seventy emblems, and detailed listings of every Skyraider that flew in the war, and the colorful units to which they were assigned. This fascinating volume is a must for aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and modelers alike.

Patrick Toomey - The Road to Prosperity, How to Gr ow Our Economy and Revive the American Dream (2009 ).jpg

Praise for The Road to Prosperity

"With clarity, verve, and polish, Pat Toomey brilliantly propounds the principles and practical policies needed to make America—and the world—prosperous again.?Ronald Reagan, Adam Smith, and Milton Friedman would vigorously applaud what Pat has put forth here."
—STEVE FORBES

"While many talking heads are tripping over each other to write the political obituary for conservatives, Pat Toomey illustrates how the limited government movement has the best policy answers for the challenges of the twenty-first century. This is a must-read book for any serious student of the limited government movement."
—DICK ARMEY, author of the Contract with America, former House Majority Leader, 1995–2003, and Chairman of FreedomWorks

"Like Ronald Reagan, Pat Toomey has found a way to breathe common sense and economic truth into public policy. Rather than allowing his political views to color his economics, Pat Toomey looks for truth first and only then does he take a political stance."
—Brian Wesbury, Chief Economist, First Trust Portfolios LP

"Anyone who cares about the future of our economy and our country should read Pat Toomey's The Road to Prosperity. If we as Americans want to return to a pro-growth and prosperous future, we will need to embrace the free-market, freedom-driven policies laid out in this book."
—CHRIS CHOCOLA, President, The Club for Growth

Eustace Mullins - Murder by Injection (1988).jpg

This is a very fine book. Eustace Mullins is an expert researcher. Previous to this book he was the FIRST person to reveal the true nature of the Federal Reserve (which has nothing to do with Federal). In this book he details the history of how control of the medicinal market has been won by the FDA and the AMA (and similar organizations in other Nations), and how the healing of citizens has been put in the hands of the Government rather than in the hands of the citizens themselves. Their choices for treatment have been downsized to that of Allopathic medicine, a way of trreatment that is relatively new, only a few hundred years old, if at that, as compared to medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years. This book details the methods used by the Rockefellers to control the medicinal market to their advantage. It also guarantees a level of population control....read on! You will be surprised!

Mullins presents some bare facts about the Federal Reserve System with subjects on: it IS NOT a U.S. government bank; it IS NOT controlled by Congress; it IS a privately owned Central Bank controlled by the elite financiers in their own interest. The Federal Reserve elite controls excessive interest rates, inflation, the printing of paper money, and have taken control of the depression of prosperity in the United States.

James Bamford - Body of Secrets Anatomy of the Ult ra-Secret National Security Agency, from the Cold War through the Dawn of a New Century (2005).jpg

01 - USA - James Bamford - Body of Secrets Anatomy of the Ultra-Se...om the Cold War through the Dawn of a New Century 2005.jpg

A no-holds-barred examination of the National Security Agency packed with startling secrets about its past, newsbreaking revelations about its present-day activities, and chilling predictions about its future powers and reach.
The NSA is the largest, most secretive, and most powerful intelligence agency in the world. With a staff of thirty-eight thousand people, it dwarfs the CIA in budget, manpower, and influence. Recent headlines have linked it to the economic espionage throughout Europe and to the ongoing hunt for the terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.
James Bamford first penetrated the wall of silence surrounding the NSA in 1982, with the much-talked-about bestseller The Puzzle Palace. In Body of Secrets, he offers shocking new details about the inner workings of the agency, gathered through unique access to thousands of internal documents and interviews with current and former officials. Unveiling extremely sensitive information for the first time, Bamford exposes the role the NSA played in numerous Soviet bloc Cold War conflicts and discusses its undercover involvement in the Vietnam War. His investigation into the NSA's technological advances during the last fifteen years brings to light a network of global surveillance ranging from on-line listening posts to sophisticated intelligence-gathering satellites. In a hard-hitting conclusion, he warns that the NSA is a two-edged sword. While its worldwide eavesdropping activities offer the potential for tracking down terrorists and uncovering nuclear weapons deals, it also has the capability to listen on global personal communications.
Like the breakout bestsellers on Cold War espionage The Sword and the Shield and Blind Man's Buff, Body of Secrets is must-reading for people fascinated by the intrigues of a shadowy underworld. As one of the most important works of investigative journalism to come out of Washington in years, it should be read by everyone concerned about the inevitability of Orwell's Big Brother.

W.R. Smyser - Kennedy and the Berlin Wall, ''A Hel l of a Lot Better than a War'' (2009).jpg

Ever since I served in the U.S. Mission in Berlin during the 1960–1963
Berlin Wall crisis, I have wanted to write this book about President John
F. Kennedy and the Berlin Wall. But I have waited until I could get
answers to my own questions about what really happened in Moscow,
Washington, Vienna, and elsewhere.
I knew and could remember quite clearly what happened on the
ground in Berlin. I was the last person to drive into East Berlin across
Potsdamer Platz before the Wall went up and one of the last to drive
through the Brandenburg Gate. I then served General Lucius D. Clay
while he was Kennedy’s personal representative in Berlin. I later returned
to Berlin often, especially during the months before and the days after the
Wall came down.
We now know much more than I or anybody else could possibly have
known at the time. Many Soviet and East German documents came open
after the fall of those regimes. The John F. Kennedy Library and the State
Department have declassified tens of thousands of pertinent U.S. documents.
Officials on all sides have published memoirs. For example, we can
now tell much more clearly:
Why Nikita Khrushchev launched his Berlin ultimatum
Why he combined his Berlin and Cuban threats
How Kennedy hoped to negotiate about Berlin
How Kennedy grew during the crisis
How Henry Kissinger advised Kennedy to handle Berlin
How Kennedy’s and Khrushchev’s allies complicated and even stymied
their policies
How General Lucius Clay advised Kennedy, and what Kennedy’s staff
thought of Clay
How Kennedy had to worry about more than a Soviet threat
Why Kennedy really made his dramatic “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech in
June 1963
That Kennedy ended the Cuban standoff as he had ended one in
Berlin

Warship Pictorial No. 9 - Steve Wiper - Yorktown C lass Carriers (2000).jpg

Chronicles the Yorktown class aircraft carriers of WW 2, with many excellent photos showing the overall ship and detailed deck shots. The three ships of this class of aircraft carriers were CV-5 USS Yorktown, CV-6 USS Enterprise, and CV-8 USS Hornet. They would play a crucial role in turning the tide of the Pacific War in 1942, by devastating the Japanese carrier force at the Battle of Midway. Although losing two of the three in that year, the Enterprise, would carry on, participating in almost all of the major battles throughout the rest of the war. She would become the most decorated ship in the U. S. Navy, winning 18 battle stars.

Elizabeth S. D. Engelhardt - Republic of Barbecue, Stories Beyond the Brisket (2009).jpg

It's no overstatement to say that the state of Texas is a republic of barbecue. Whether it's brisket, sausage, ribs, or chicken, barbecue feeds friends while they catch up, soothes tensions at political events, fuels community festivals, sustains workers of all classes, celebrates brides and grooms, and even supports churches. Recognizing just how central barbecue is to Texas's cultural life, Elizabeth Engelhardt and a team of eleven graduate students from the University of Texas at Austin set out to discover and describe what barbecue has meant to Texans ever since they first smoked a beef brisket.

Republic of Barbecue presents a fascinating, multifaceted portrait of the world of barbecue in Central Texas. The authors look at everything from legendary barbecue joints in places such as Taylor and Lockhart to feedlots, ultra-modern sausage factories, and sustainable forests growing hardwoods for barbecue pits. They talk to pit masters and proprietors, who share the secrets of barbecue in their own words. Like side dishes to the first-person stories, short essays by the authors explore a myriad of barbecue's themes--food history, manliness and meat, technology, nostalgia, civil rights, small-town Texas identity, barbecue's connection to music, favorite drinks such as Big Red, Dr. Pepper, Shiner Bock, and Lone Star beer--to mention only a few. An ode to Texas barbecue in films, a celebration of sports and barbecue, and a pie chart of the desserts that accompany brisket all find homes in the sidebars of the book, while photographic portraits of people and places bring readers face-to-face with the culture of barbecue.
