The words "Indian fighter" recall Custer. "Indian fighter politician" brings to mind Andrew Jackson or William Henry Harrison. Yet politicians who rose to prominence by exploiting their participation in bloody campaigns against Native America were much more common than most Americans realize. This book will bring to light important facts and highlight controversial issues regarding well-known figures from American history and folklore, while situating the questionable actions of these politicians within their historical and political times.

Walter LaFeber - The Panama Canal, The Crisis in H istorical Perspective (1990).jpg

Noted historian LaFeber (history, Cornell), author of the acclaimed Inevitable Revolutions ( LJ 12/1/82), has updated his 1978 classic, bringing his discussion of U.S.-Panama relations up to the 1980s. This edition also marks the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. Even though this was written before the October 1989 failed coup attempt to oust Manuel Noriega, LaFeber notes that "Even if the General Noriega disappeared, the political relationship between Panama and the United States must be rebuilt and rethought." LaFeber also has provided an updated bibliographic essay.

National Research Council - Compensating for Wetla nd Losses Under the Clean Water Act (2001).jpg

Recognizing the importance of wetland protection, the Bush administration in 1988 endorsed the goal of “no net loss” of wetlands. Specifically, it directed that filling of wetlands should be avoided, and minimized when it cannot be avoided. When filling is permitted, compensatory mitigation must be undertaken; that is, wetlands must be restored, created, enhanced, and, in exceptional cases, preserved, to replace the permitted loss of wetland area and function, such as water quality improvement within the watershed. After more than a dozen years, the national commitment to “no net loss” of wetlands has been evaluated. This new book explores the adequacy of science and technology for replacing wetland function and the effectiveness of the federal program of compensatory mitigation in accomplishing the nation’s goal of clean water. It examines the regulatory framework for permitting wetland filling and requiring mitigation, compares the mitigation institutions that are in use, and addresses the problems that agencies face in ensuring sustainability of mitigated wetlands over the long term.

David M. Harland - NASA's Moon Program, Paving the Way for Apollo 11 (2009).jpg

David Harland here initiates a series of books on NASA’s Moon Program of the 1960s and early 1970s. Presented chronologically, ‘NASA’s Moon Program – The Early Years’ will outline the Mercury and Gemini manned missions, the unmanned lunar probes and the Apollo missions leading up to Apollo 11, covering that mission only as a postscript. ‘The First Men on the Moon – The Story of Apollo 11,’ released in 2006 is devoted solely to that mission. ‘Apollo – The Definitive Sourcebook,’ published in 2006, covered all the missions, including the unmanned tests, in an encyclopedic style which included many facts and figures. ‘Exploring the Moon – The Apollo Expeditions,’ published in 1999, focused on the final three Apollo missions, and covered only their activities on the lunar surface. A fully re-illustrated second edition with color illustrations was released in 2008. The individual mission books in this series will relate to the planning, flight and results, and are written in the same style as ‘The First Men on the Moon – The Story of Apollo 11,’ i.e. using dialog from the in-flight transcripts (including some conversations never broadcast) to bring their stories to life. David Harland will later cover the other five missions that landed on the Moon, concluding by 2012 – the 40th anniversary of the ‘last’ Apollo mission.
Each of the Apollo missions that reached the Moon gets its own book-lenth account covering planning, the flight, and the scientific results. This series will become the definitive account of the Apollo era. It will give the Springer/Praxis list unrivaled coverage of the Apollo era of space exploration. Plans are already in the works for a return to the Moon by 2020 to create a Moonbas

Dick Morris, Eileen McGann - Condi vs. Hillary, Th e Next Great Presidential Race (2005).jpg

Who will be president in 2008? Many believe that the White House is Hillary Clinton's to lose. As long-time strategists Dick Morris and Eileen McGann reveal in Condi vs. Hillary, however, Hillary's plans for higher office are vulnerable to a challenge from a most unexpected quarter: the Bush administration's secretary of state and former national security advisor, Condoleezza Rice. Rice is the only figure on the national scene who has the credentials, the credibility, and the charisma to lead the GOP in 2008. And, as this first book on the subject demonstrates, a race between these two commanding, but very different, women is a very real possibility -- and would inevitably prove one of the most fascinating and important races in American history.

01 - USA - Katharine G. Abraham, Christopher Mackie - Beyond the ...esigning Nonmarket Accounts for the United States 2005.jpg

The national income and product accounts that underlie gross domestic product (GDP), together with other key economic data price and employment statistics are widely used as indicators of how well the nation is doing. GDP, however, is focused on the production of goods and services sold in markets and reveals relatively little about important production in the home and other areas outside of markets. A set of satellite accounts in areas such as health, education, volunteer and home production, and environmental improvement or pollution would contribute to a better understanding of major issues related to economic growth and societal well-being.

Peter Annin - The Great Lakes Water Wars (2006).jpg

The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic? Peter Annin writes a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this globally significant resource.

Sherrilyn A. Ifill - On the Courthouse Lawn, Confr onting the Legacy of Lynching in the Twenty-first Century (2006).jpg

01 - USA - Sherrilyn A. Ifill - On the Courthouse Lawn, Confrontin...he Legacy of Lynching in the Twenty-first Century 2006.jpg

Nearly 5,000 black Americans were lynched between 1890 and 1960. Over forty years later, Sherrilyn Ifill’s On the Courthouse Lawn examines the numerous ways that this racial trauma still resounds across the United States. While the lynchings and their immediate aftermath were devastating, the little-known contemporary consequences, such as the marginalization of political and economic development for black Americans, are equally pernicious. On the Courthouse Lawn investigates how the lynchings implicated average white citizens, some of whom actively participated in the violence, while many others witnessed the lynchings but did nothing to stop them. Ifill observes that this history of complicity has become embedded in the social and cultural fabric of local communities, who either supported, condoned, or ignored the violence. She traces the lingering effects of two lynchings in Maryland to illustrate how ubiquitous this history is and issues a clarion call for American communities with histories of racial violence to be proactive in facing this legacy today

Vernon E. Jordan, Jr. - Make It Plain, Standing Up and Speaking Out (2008).jpg

Black Americans have always relied on the oral tradition—storytelling, preaching, and speechmaking—to assert their rights and preserve and pass on their history and culture. In the pulpit, courtroom, or cotton field, they have understood the power of words, distinctively delivered, to educate and inspire. Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., one of the nation’s finest speakers, imbibed this tradition as a young man and has given it his own unique inflection from his work on the civil rights front lines, to the National Urban League, to positions of influence at the highest level of business and politics. A friend and confidant to presidents, Jordan has never forgotten the men and women—from Ruby Hurley to Wiley Branton to Gardner C. Taylor to Martin Luther King, Jr.—whose oratorical skill in service to social justice deeply influenced him. Their examples and voices, reflected in Vernon’s own, make this book both a history and an embodiment of black speech at its finest: Full of emotion, controlled force, righteous indignation, love of country, and awe in front of the God-given challenges ahead.

Stacey Deborah, Abbott Jermyn - Falling in Love Ag ain, Romantic Comedy in Contemporary Cinema (2009).jpg

East Asian democracies are in trouble, their legitimacy threatened by poor policy performance and undermined by nostalgia for the progrowth, soft-authoritarian regimes of the past. Yet citizens throughout the region value freedom, reject authoritarian alternatives, and believe in democracy. This book is the first to report the results of a large-scale survey-research project, the East Asian Barometer, in which eight research teams conducted national-sample surveys in five new democracies (Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Mongolia), one established democracy (Japan), and two nondemocracies (China and Hong Kong) in order to assess the prospects for democratic consolidation. The findings present a definitive account of the way in which East Asians understand their governments and their roles as citizens. Contributors use their expert local knowledge to analyze responses from a set of core questions, revealing both common patterns and national characteristics in citizens' views of democracy. They explore sources of divergence and convergence in attitudes within and across nations.

Rodney P. Carlisle - Powder and Propellants, Energ etic Materials at Indian Head, Maryland, 1890-2001 (2002).jpg

Powder and Propellants is the story of the U.S. Navy's premier facility for research, development, testing, and evaluation of "energetic materials," the chemical compounds used in gun and rocket propellants as well as in aircraft cockpit ejection seats. Initially charged to improve the penetrating power of warheads against steel armor, Indian Head became the proving grounds for testing guns, propellant powder, shells, mounts, and armor, notably the manufacture and testing of Jet Assist Takeoff (JATO), Zuni, Talos, and Polaris rockets and missiles. First published in 1990 as a private publication for the navy, Powder and Propellants is now available again as a revised and expanded second edition, with a new chapter on the institution's last decade. Those interested in military history, technology, and government institutional history will find this book invaluable.

Ronald P. Formisano - For the People, American Pop ulist Movements from the Revolution to the 1850s ( 2008).jpg

For the People offers a new interpretation of populist political movements from the Revolution to the eve of the Civil War and roots them in the disconnect between the theory of rule by the people and the reality of rule by elected representatives. Ron Formisano seeks to rescue populist movements from the distortions of contemporary opponents as well as the misunderstandings of later historians. From the Anti-Federalists to the Know-Nothings, Formisano traces the movements chronologically, contextualizing them and demonstrating the progression of ideas and movements. Although American populist movements have typically been categorized as either progressive or reactionary, left-leaning or right-leaning, Formisano argues that most populist movements exhibit liberal and illiberal tendencies simultaneously. Gendered notions of "manhood" are an enduring feature, yet women have been intimately involved in nearly every populist insurgency. By considering these movements together, Formisano identifies commonalities that belie the pattern of historical polarization and bring populist movements from the margins to the core of American history.

Dolores Coulter Cogan - We Fought the Navy and Won , Guam's Quest for Democracy (2008).jpg

"We Fought the Navy and Won" is a carefully documented yet impassioned recollection of Guam's struggle to liberate itself from the absolutist rule of the U.S. Navy. Doloris Cogan concentrates on five crucial years, 1945-1950, when, fresh out of journalism school, she had the good fortune to join the distinguished team of idealists at the newly formed Institute of Ethnic Affairs in Washington, D.C. Working as a writer/editor on the monthly Guam Echo under the leadership of the Institute's director, John Collier, Cogan witnessed and recorded the battle fought at the very top between Collier and Navy Secretary James V. Forrestal as the people of Guam petitioned the U.S. Congress for civilian government under a constitution. Taken up by newspapers throughout the country, this war of words illustrated how much freedom of the press plays in achieving and sustaining true democracy. Part of the story centers around a young Chamorro named Carlos Taitano, who returned home to Guam in 1948 after serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific. Taitano joined his colleagues in the lower house and walked out of the Guam Congress in 1949 to protest the naval governor, who had refused their right to subpoena an American businessman suspected of illegal activity. The walkout was the catalyst that introduced the Organic Act of Guam, which was signed into law by President Truman in 1950. "We Fought the Navy and Won" is the first detailed look at the events surrounding Guam's elevation from possession to territory.

William M. McBride - Technological Change and the United States Navy, 1865-1945 (2000).jpg

Navies have always been technologically sophisticated, from the ancient world's trireme galleys and the Age of Sail's ships-of-the-line to the dreadnoughts of World War I and today's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines. Yet each large technical innovation has met with resistance and even hostility from those officers who, adhering to a familiar warrior ethos, have grown used to a certain style of fighting. In Technological Change and the United States Navy, William M. McBride examines how the navy dealt with technological change -- from the end of the Civil War through the "age of the battleship" -- as technology became more complex and the nation assumed a global role. Although steam engines generally made their mark in the maritime world by 1865, for example, and proved useful to the Union riverine navy during the Civil War, a backlash within the service later developed against both steam engines and the engineers who ran them. Early in the twentieth century the large dreadnought battleship at first met similar resistance from some officers, including the famous Alfred Thayer Mahan, and their industrial and political allies. During the first half of the twentieth century the battleship exercised a dominant influence on those who developed the nation's strategies and operational plans -- at the same time that advances in submarines and fixed-wing aircraft complicated the picture and undermined the battleship's superiority.
