As mass media burgeoned in the years between the first and second world wars, so did another phenomenon—celebrity. Beginning in Hollywood with the studio-orchestrated transformation of uncredited actors into brand-name stars, celebrity also spread to writers, whose personal appearances and private lives came to fascinate readers as much as their work. Women, Celebrity, and Literary Culture between the Wars profiles seven American, Canadian, and British women writers—Dorothy Parker, Anita Loos, Mae West, L. M. Montgomery, Margaret Kennedy, Stella Gibbons, and E. M. Delafield—who achieved literary celebrity in the 1920s and 1930s and whose work remains popular even today. Faye Hammill investigates how the fame and commercial success of these writers—as well as their gender—affected the literary reception of their work. She explores how women writers sought to fashion their own celebrity images through various kinds of public performance and how the media appropriated these writers for particular cultural discourses. She also reassesses the relationship between celebrity culture and literary culture, demonstrating how the commercial success of these writers caused literary elites to denigrate their writing as "middlebrow," despite the fact that their work often challenged middle-class ideals of marriage, home, and family and complicated class categories and lines of social discrimination. The first comparative study of North American and British literary celebrity, Women, Celebrity, and Literary Culture between the Wars offers a nuanced appreciation of the middlebrow in relation to modernism and popular culture.

James Walvin - African's Life, The Life and Times of Olaudah Equiano, 1745-1797 (2000).jpg

The autobiography of Olaudah Equiano, a prominent African in late 18th-century Britain, is quoted, anthologized and interpreted in dozens of books and articles. More than any single contemporary, Equiano speaks for the fate of millions of Africans in the era of the transatlantic slave trade. This study attempts to create a rounded portrait of the man behind the literary image, and to study Equiano in the context of Atlantic slavery.

Jessie Daniels - Cyber Racism, White Supremacy Onl ine and the New Attack on Civil Rights (2009).jpg

This book grows out of my experience with Internet technologies in a wide range of milieux but particularly from my time spent teaching with the aid of technology in the classroom in 1996 at a suburban, privately funded university. Students entering college for the first time in the fall of 2008 were born in 1990, about the same time the Internet began to emerge, and they have never known a time without its existence. Now I teach in a publicly funded urban university with students from a diverse range of backgrounds, most of whom have grown up digitally fluent. I wrote this book with them in mind.

Kathleen Hudson - Women in Texas Music, Stories an d Songs (2007).jpg

Across the state and across a wide variety of musical genres, women are making their mark on Texas music. Some have become international superstars, while others are just starting to make their voices heard. But every woman who goes out and plays her music proves that "baring one's heart and soul takes courage, and Texas women artists have a lot of courage," as Lloyd Maines observes in the opening interview of this book. To pay tribute to these dedicated musicians and to capture their unique perspectives on what it means to be a woman in the music business, Kathleen Hudson has spent many years interviewing Texas women musicians for the Texas Heritage Music Foundation. In Women in Texas Music, Hudson lets us listen in on conversations with thirty-nine musical artists, including Emily Robison, Terri Hendrix, Lee Ann Womack, Rosie Flores, Betty Buckley, Marcia Ball, Lavelle White, and Bobbie Nelson. Hudson encourages and allows the women to tell their own stories as she delves into their life journeys, creative processes, and the importance of writing and performing music, be it blues, rock, country, folk, jazz, or pop. The interviews are warm and open, like good friends sharing the lessons that a life of playing music has taught them. What emerges from this collection is a solid sense of the strength and integrity that women bring to and gain from Texas music. Everyone who cares about music and culture in Texas will want to join the conversation.

Lane Hirabayashi - Japanese-American Resettlement Through the Lens, Hikaru Iwasaki and the WRA's Pho tographic Section, 1943-1945 (2009).jpg

01 - USA - Lane Hirabayashi - Japanese-American Resettlement Throu...saki and the WRAs Photographic Section, 1943-1945 2009.jpg

In Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens, Lane Ryo Hirabayashi gathers a unique collection of photographs by War Relocation Authority photographer Hikaru Iwasaki, the only full time WRA photographer from the period still living.

With substantive focus on resettlement--and in particular Iwasaki's photos of Japanese Americans following their release from WRA camps from 1943 to 1945--Hirabayashi explores the WRA's use of photography in its mission not only to encourage "loyal" Japanese Americans to return to society at large as quickly as possible but also to convince Euro-Americans this was safe and advantageous. Hirabayashi also assesses the relative success of the WRA project, as well as the multiple uses of the photographs over time, first by the WRA and then by students, scholars, and community members in the present day.

Although the photos have been used to illustrate a number of publications, this book is the first sustained treatment addressing questions directly related to official WRA photographs. Under what conditions were they taken? How and where were they developed, selected, and stored? How were they used during the 1940s? What impact did they have during and following the war?

By focusing on the WRA's Photographic Section, Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens makes a unique contribution to the body of literature on Japanese Americans during World War II.

Naomi Klein - No Logo, Taking Aim at the Brand Bul lies (2000).jpg

The hotly debated report from the frontlines of mounting backlash against multinational corporations. A national bestseller,No Logotook Canadians by storm when it was published last year in hardcover. Equal parts cultural analysis, political manifesto, mall-rat memoir, and journalistic expose, it is the first book to uncover a betrayal of the central promises of the information age: choice, interactivity, and increased freedom. No Logotakes apart our packaged and branded world and puts the pieces into clear pop-historical and economic perspective. Naomi Klein tracks the resistance and self-determination mounting in the face of our new branded world and explains why some of the most revered brands in the world are finding themselves on the wrong end of a bottle of spray paint, a computer hack, or an international anti-corporate campaign.

Patricia Bonomi - Under the Cope of Heaven, Religi on, Society, and Politics in Colonial America (200 3).jpg

In this pathbreaking study, Patricia Bonomi argues that religion was as instrumental as either politics or the economy in shaping early American life and values. Looking at the middle and southern colonies as well as at Puritan New England, Bonomi finds an abundance of religious vitality through the colonial years among clergy and churchgoers of diverse religious background. The book also explores the tightening relationship between religion and politics and illuminates the vital role religion played in the American Revolution. A perennial backlist title first published in 1986, this updated edition includes a new preface on research in the field on African Americans, Indians, women, the Great Awakening, and Atlantic history and how these impact her interpretations.

Horror cinema is a hugely successful, but at the same time culturally illicit genre that spans the history of cinema. It continues to flourish with recent cycles of supernatural horror and torture porn that span the full range of horror styles and aesthetics. It is enjoyed by audiences everywhere, but also seen as a malign influence by others.

Terry Waghorn - The System, A Story of Intrigue an d Market Domination (2003).jpg

At its core are three basic concepts: (1) Focus: Market domination begins with the need to focus all of your energy and resources on one business and shed all others. And it shouldn't be just any old business, it should be the one in which you have or could have a unique advantage—something that customers value and competitors find difficult to copy. (2) Fortify: Choosing a unique position, however, is not enough to guarantee a sustainable competitive advantage. Eventually someone will find a way to imitate it. The challenge, therefore, is to make imitation as difficult as possible for them to do. In short, you need to fortify your position. And, (3) Foster Futurity: Regardless of how well you fortify your position, the reality is that eventually your more inspired rivals will find a way to penetrate your defenses. You need to be ready for that day when it arrives, so that when it does, your enemies will arrive only to find that you're no longer there—you've already moved on, leaving nothing but warm ashes in your wake. And the game of catch-up begins anew.

Adam Woog - Jacques Cartier (2009).jpg

Commissioned by King Francois I of France to claim new lands for the country, Jacques Cartier arrived in Newfoundland in 1534. Seeking a Northwest Passage to the riches of India, he continued on and discovered the St. Lawrence River, a natural border existing between present-day Canada and New England. Cartier briefly explored the area and sailed back to France, only to return to the St. Lawrence with two American Indians as guides. His findings contributed to the founding of Montreal and Quebec and the creation of a lucrative trading network between the French and the American Indians. "Jacques Cartier" is a biography about the first explorer to establish a French presence in North America, an accomplishment that allowed the next generation of French sailors to create the first settlements in Canada.
