In Make Room for Daddy, historian Judith Walzer Leavitt offers a fascinating look at an important but long-neglected aspect of childbirth in America—the changing role of the expectant father.

Leavitt uses fathers' first-hand accounts from letters, journals, and personal interviews along with hospital records and medical literature to offer a new perspective on the changing role of expectant fathers from the 1940s to the 1980s. She shows how, as men moved first from the hospital waiting room to the labor room in the 1960s, and then on to the delivery and birthing rooms in the 1970s and 1980s, they became progressively more involved in the birth experience and their influence over events expanded. With careful attention to power and privilege, Leavitt charts not only the increasing involvement of fathers, but also medical inequalities, the impact of race and class, and the evolution of hospital policies.

Heavily illustrated with more than seventy images from medical literature, films, and television shows such as I Love Lucy, All in the Family, and Happy Days and from popular magazines including Ebony and McCall's, this book explores popular depictions as well as the real experiences of fathers across the country. Telling much of the story using fathers' and mothers' own voices, this engaging book will strike a chord with many readers, reminding them of their own experiences even as it offers important new insights into childbirth in modern America.

Gail B. Stewart - K-9 Police Units (2009).jpg

Forming an effective K-9 team starts with selecting the right dog. Police dog trainers say that deciding what breed of dog to choose depends on how the K-9 will be used. Many breeds can be trained successfully to do what is known as “single-purpose” detection work. These are the dogs that can alert a handler to the presence of weapons, drugs, explosives, or even human stowaways trying to cross borders illegally.

John D. Cox - Traveling South, Travel Narratives a nd the Construction of American Identity (2005).jpg

Traveling South is the first major study of how narratives of travel through the antebellum South helped construct an American national identity during the years between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. John Cox makes his case on the basis of a broad range of texts that includes slave narratives, domestic literature, and soldiers’ diaries, as well as more traditional forms of travel writing. In the process he extends the boundaries of travel literature both as a genre and as a subject of academic study.

Colonel John Hughes-Wilson - Military Intelligence Blunders (1999).jpg

This book tells the stories behind some of the world's most disastrous military mistakes, whether caused by faulty information, bad interpretation, cunning plans to deceive the intelligence gatherers or leaders who won't listen to what they are told. It is an analysis of the "intelligence cycle" that turns raw data into useful information about capabilities and intentions and then brings it to the attention of the decision-makers. Who uses many examples of all kinds of extraordinary decisions and deceptions from history to show how often and badly things can go wrong

Art Kleps - Millbrook, A Narrative of the Early Ye ars of American Psychedelianism, Recension of 2005 (2005).jpg

A rough outline of major events in the book: In 1960, the author, then a school psychologist, takes a half a gram of pure mescaline sulfate, which he legally orders through the mail, and has a massive visionary trip. Three years later, Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert and Ralph Metzer, Ph.D.s recently ejected from Harvard, move into the Hitchcock property, a 2500-acre estate in Millbrook, wealthy Dutchess County, New York. They were offered a 50 room mansion, the "Big House," by Billy and Tommy Hitchcock, heirs of the Mellon fortune, as a "psychedelic research center." Art Kleps sends Leary a copy of his Neo-Psychopathic Character Test and is invited to visit Millbrook.

David Bell, Joanne Hollows - Historicizing Lifesty le, Mediating Taste, Consumption And Identity from the 1900s to 1970s (2006).jpg

01 - USA - David Bell, Joanne Hollows - Historicizing Lifestyle, M... Consumption And Identity from the 1900s to 1970s 2006.jpg

Lifestyles have a history, and lifestyle media is fundamentally implicated in this history. This original volume examines issues of taste, media and lifestyle from the 1900s to 1970s, providing a wealth of empirical evidence and key debate from a variety of international perspectives. Including examples as diverse as "Good Housekeeping" and "Playboy", it explores the continuities and discontinuities between the past and present to provide a better understanding about the representation of lifestyle and its relationship to the self. The volume demonstrates how ideas about gender, nation and 'race' problematize the taken-for-granted assumptions about lifestyle, with particular emphasis on the new middle classes in the US. The book also looks at the role of advertising and marketing in mediating ideas about lifestyle, and the role of material culture in the construction of cultural hierarchies and the positioning of social groups within wider cartographies of taste. The volume makes a significant contribution to this growing field, and is of interest to academics and students in media and cultural studies, communication studies, cultural history, and sociology.

He also discusses the effects of the Eritrean-Ethiopian war on US policy and posture in the region, along with the effects of other regional wars. The book looks at the relationship between US perceptions of Islamism and brings a unique perspective to the ongoing debate over US policy in the Islamic world. It will be of interest to those working in or researching foreign policy, as well as peace, security and conflict issues.

Claude S. Fisher - America Calling, A Social Histo ry of the Telephone to 1940 (1994).jpg

A warning to those who see technology as having clear and far-reaching consequences in American life: Don't use the telephone as an obvious example. From a user-centered view of technological dispersion, the author argues convincingly that the telephone reinforced social and cultural patterns rather than changed them. Most wealthy and middle-class Americans (and many farmers) adopted the new technology to their own ends prior to World War II--ends not necessarily anticipated or welcomed by industry leaders or technology forecasters. Well researched, with an excellent bibliography and fascinating endnotes, Fischer's study is likely to be a required purchase for comprehensive collections in sociology, business, and the history of technology. It is accessible, however, to a wider audience because of its readability.

Christopher Cocker - Ethics and War in the 21st Ce ntury (2008).jpg

In an eminently readable and historically informed narrative, Coker demonstrates that we have rules of war, not because we are nice but because we are sensible. These rules are hard to apply to novel situations like the struggle against terrorism, but failure to do so almost inevitably makes victory more elusive and costlier. Statesmen, soldiers, diplomats, scholars, and anyone concerned with the problem of war and ethics, will find this an informative, provocative and helpful book

Suzanne Strempek Shea - Sundays in America, A Year long Road Trip in Search of Christian Faith (2008).jpg

It's a fascinating project: attend 52 different churches in one year and report your first impressions. Shea, a New England novelist and former Catholic, engagingly writes of her initial visits to all kinds of churches: Shaker and Baptist, evangelical and mainline, African-American and Caucasian. Sometimes, these well-written first impressions yield intriguing analysis, as when she notes the total absence of children at the Mother Church of Christ, Scientist. But more often, the book's quick verdicts reinforce the idea that public Sunday worship is just one part of what makes a religion tick, and that it may be unfair to judge churches solely on this basis. Shea seems comfortable enough criticizing other people's intolerance—including that of former president and erstwhile Sunday School teacher Jimmy Carter—but myopically fails to see her own judgmentalism, as when bemoaning the Mennonite presence on a Hopi reservation or taking easy shots at televangelist Joel Osteen. Also, the book has some small factual errors; for instance, Mormons do not believe in the Holy Trinity, as Shea attests. Although the portraits are appealingly personal and often funny, readers may wish for a more rigorous examination of these churches than Shea's impressionistic approach is able to provide.

John Christgau - The Gambler and the Bug Boy, 1939 Los Angeles and the Untold Story of a Horse Racin g Fix (2007).jpg

01 - USA - John Christgau - The Gambler and the Bug Boy, 1939 Los ...ngeles and the Untold Story of a Horse Racing Fix 2007.jpg

“Scandal on the Turf!” the Los Angeles Times proclaimed. It was October 1940, a mere few months after Seabiscuit had won the Santa Anita Derby, and now this bombshell: “Six Jockeys Admit Horse Races Fixed.” The Gambler and the Bug Boy recounts this dark chapter in horse racing history. At its center is Bernard “Big” Mooney, a flashy L.A. bookmaker who began his seedy career by threatening young jockeys with death if they didn’t “pull” their horses. His unwilling partner is Albert Siler, a callow, eighteen-year-old apprentice rider (a so-called bug boy) from eastern Oregon. John Christgau tells how Big Mooney manipulated this promising rider and how Siler tried to escape the gambler’s criminal grip without ruining his career. Christgau's book gives all the harrowing details of the unraveling plot and the botched court case that followed which riveted the attention of the nation. Told in full for the first time, this story brings to light a little-known but important horse racing scandal.

Dreck Spurlock Wilson - African American Architect s, A Biographical Dictionary, 1865-1945 (2004).jpg

Since the end of the Civil War, African-American architects have been responsible for creating houses, schools, research institutes, and other significant buildings throughout the United States. The Widener Library at Harvard University, the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and Tuskegee Institute's Butler Chapel are just a few examples of prominent buildings designed by African Americans. But even though many of the structures they helped create survive to this day, most of these architects remain virtually unknown. This unique reference source brings the lives and work of these pioneers to light for the first time. Written by over 100 experts, ranging from archivists to architectural historians, this book chronicles African-American architects from the era of Emancipation to the end of World War II, filling a key gap in existing scholarship. The number of architects and the scope of their accomplishments will surprise and fascinate readers. Some 160 illustrated A-Z entries include biographical essays as well as commentary on the work of each architect, offering a wealth of information about their lives, their buildings, and the obstacles many had to overcome. Articles provide insight on the history of architectural education at traditionally black colleges and universities, such as Tuskegee Institute, Howard University, Hampton Institute, Florida A&M, and Prairie View A&M. The book features a helpful introductory overview of African Americans in domestic architecture, and an appendix containing a list of buildings by geographical location and architect makes for a handy reference tool
