Ron Eyerman - Cultural Trauma, Slavery and the For mation of African American Identity (2002).jpg

This book explores the formation of the African-American identity through the theory of cultural trauma. The trauma in question is slavery, not as an institution or as personal experience, but as collective memory--a pervasive remembrance that grounded a people's sense of itself. Ron Eyerman offers insights into the intellectual and generational conflicts of identity-formation which have a truly universal significance, and provides a new and compelling account of the birth of African-American identity.

Mark A. Graber - Dred Scott and the Problem of Con stitutional Evil (2006).jpg

Dred Scott and the Problem of Constitutional Evil concerns what is entailed by pledging allegiance to a constitutional text and tradition saturated with concessions to evil. The Constitution of the United States was originally understood as an effort to mediate controversies between persons who disputed fundamental values, and did not offer a vision of the good society. In order to form a "more perfect union" with slaveholders, late-eighteenth-century citizens fashioned a constitution that plainly compelled some injustices and was silent or ambiguous on other questions of fundamental right. This constitutional relationship could survive only as long as a bisectional consensus was required to resolve all constitutional questions not settled in 1787. Dred Scott challenges persons committed to human freedom to determine whether antislavery northerners should have provided more accommodations for slavery than were constitutionally strictly necessary or risked the enormous destruction of life and property that preceded Lincoln's new birth of freedom.

Greg Prato - Grunge Is Dead, The Oral History of S eattle Rock Music (2009).jpg

Weaving together the definitive story of the Seattle music scene through a series of interviews with the people who were there, this book contains more than 130 interviews, along with essential background information. Digging deeper than other accounts, this history begins in the early 1960s, tracing the chain of events that spawned some of the greatest rock acts of all time in the 1990s, including Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. First-ever interviews include Eddie Vedder's take on Pearl Jam's history, a discussion among the members of Alice in Chains, and Layne Staley's mother's comments on her son's drug addiction and death. There is also plenty of information on less well-known aspects of the grunge scene, including the Riot Grrrl movement and the oft-overlooked but highly influential Seattle bands such as Mother Love Bone/Andy Wood, the Melvins, Screaming Trees, and Mudhoney. The end result is a comprehensive guide that includes a wealth of previously untold stories and offers a fresh and immediate approach to music history.

Nicholas A. Robins - Native Insurgencies and the G enocidal Impulse in the Americas (2005).jpg

This book investigates three Indian revolts in the Americas: the 1680 uprising of the Pueblo Indians against the Spanish; the Great Rebellion in Bolivia, 1780–82; and the Caste War of Yucatan that began in 1849 and was not finally crushed until 1903. Nicholas A. Robins examines their causes, course, nature, leadership, and goals. He finds common features: they were revitalization movements that were both millenarian and exterminatory in their means and objectives; they sought to restore native rule and traditions to their societies; and they were movements born of despair and oppression that were sustained by the belief that they would witness the dawning of a new age. His work underscores the link that may be found, but is not inherent, between genocide, millennialism, and revitalization movements in Latin America during the colonial and early national periods.

George Kimball - Four Kings, Leonard, Hagler, Hear ns, Duran and the Last Great Era of Boxing (2008).jpg

Their names are legendary: Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hit Man Hearns, and Roberto Duran. They were exceptional boxers with unique combinations of power and speed. In another era, with few rivals of equal caliber, each might have held championship belts for years on end. But as it was, they matured together in the 1980s and fought each other as middleweights. With unforgettable courage and skill, they ruled the ring and ushered in the last Golden Age of boxing.

George Kimball takes an authoritative look at the rivalries that fueled this great era in sports history. Veteran sports journalist Kimball reported on every one of the Four Kings’ nine internecine fights. Here his eye-witness coverage is enhanced by recent interviews with each of the boxers and other seasoned analysts. The result is a fast-paced, blow-by-blow account of four extraordinary adversaries and a remarkable boxing epoch.

Daniel C. Kramer - The Price of Rights, The Courts , Government Largesse, and Fundamental Liberties ( 2004).jpg

To paraphrase the Book of Job, 'the state giveth and the state taketh away'. American government gives its citizens benefits such as Social Security, college scholarships, tax breaks, and licenses. But what do the courts do when it 'taketh away' these boons from individuals who criticize it bitterly or refuse to work on their holy day? The Price of Rights addresses the problem of how the judiciary reacts when a generous polity denies its bounty to people exercising their fundamental rights—an issue frequently ignored in college and law school civil liberties classes. Thus this book will be a valuable supplement for students taking such courses and should interest anyone desirous of safeguarding our Bill of Rights.

Gary North - Political Polytheism, The Myth of Plu ralism (1989).jpg

Gary Kilgore North (born 1942) is an economist and publisher who writes on topics including economics, history, and Christian theology.

North argues for the abolition of the fractional-reserve banking system and a return to the gold standard. He also opposes the US Department of Education and Council on Higher Education Accreditation claiming it is a "cartel" and the group has, in part, caused higher education to "become uniformly secular, liberal, and mediocre: raising the cost of entry

Wallace J. Thies - Why NATO Endures (2009).jpg

Why NATO Endures examines military alliances and their role in international relations, developing two themes. The first is that the Atlantic Alliance, also known as NATO, has become something very different from virtually all pre-1939alliances and many contemporary alliances. The members of early alliances frequently feared their allies as much if not more than their enemies, viewing them as temporary accomplices and future rivals. In contrast, NATO members were almost all democracies that encouraged each other to grow stronger. The book's second theme is that NATO, as an alliance of democracies, has developed hidden strengths that have allowed it to endure for roughly 60 years, unlike most otheralliances , which often broke apart within a few years. Democracies can and do disagree with one another, but they do not fear each other. They also need the approval of other democracies as they conduct their foreign policies. These traits constitute built-in, self-healing tendencies, which is why NATO endures.

George Grant - The Dispossessed, Homeless in Ameri ca (1986).jpg

They have always been with us. From the glory days of ancient Rome to the high-tech decadence of modern America, from the Protestant Reformation to the Industrial Revolution, from the golden age to the space age, they have always haunted our cities and our consciences. They exist on the fringes, taking meals and shelter when and where they can. They always have. It's just that now there are more of them. As many as three million of these dispossessed souls crowd into tent cities, abandoned warehouses, vermin-infested public shelters, and skid-row back alleys today. So, what can be done? The United Nations has designated 1987 as the International Year of the Homeless to draw attention to this looming crisis and to propose some solutions-more governmental control, centralization of the economy, and the abolition of private property. George Grant has a better idea. In The Dispossessed, he asserts that the solutions to homelessness can be found in the Bible, and he describes what those solutions are in a practical, understandable, compelling style. Very simply, no one has ever written a book on homelessness and social policy like this. Grant is passionate and personal. He is thorough and forthright. He is sensitive and Scriptural. He has done for poverty and social welfare what John Whitehead has done for law and what Francis Schaeffer has done for Christian activism. And best of all, he has given us a literary feast as well.

J. Todd Moye - Let the People Decide, Black Freedo m and White Resistance Movements in Sunflower Coun ty, Mississippi, 1945-1986 (2004).jpg

01 - USA - J. Todd Moye - Let the People Decide, Black Freedom an...ments in Sunflower County, Mississippi, 1945-1986 2004.jpg

In the middle of the Mississippi Delta lies rural, black-majority Sunflower County. J. Todd Moye examines the social histories of civil rights and white resistance movements in Sunflower, tracing the development of organizing strategies in separate racial communities over four decades. Sunflower County was home to both James Eastland, one of the most powerful reactionaries in the U.S. Senate in the twentieth century, and Fannie Lou Hamer, the freedom-fighting sharecropper who rose to national prominence as head of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Sunflower was the birthplace of the Citizens' Council, the white South's pre-eminent anti-civil rights organization, but it was also a hotbed of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) organizing and a fountainhead of freedom culture. Using extensive oral history interviews and archival research, Moye situates the struggle for democracy in Sunflower County within the context of national developments in the civil rights movement. Arguing that the civil rights movement cannot be understood as a national monolith, Moye reframes it as the accumulation of thousands of local movements, each with specific goals and strategies. By continuing the analysis into the 1980s, Let the People Decide pushes the boundaries of conventional periodization, recognizing the full extent of the civil rights movement.

W. Carl Biven - Jimmy Carter's Economy, Policy in an Age of Limits (2002).jpg

The massive inflation and oil crisis of the 1970s damaged Jimmy Carter's presidency. In Jimmy Carter's Economy, Carl Biven traces how the Carter administration developed and implemented economic policy amid multiple crises and explores how a combination of factors beyond the administration's control came to dictate a new paradigm of Democratic Party politics. Jimmy Carter inherited a deeply troubled economy. Inflation had been on the rise since the Johnson years, and the oil crisis Carter faced was the second oil price shock of the decade. In addition, a decline in worker productivity and a rise in competition from Germany and Japan compounded the nation's economic problems. The resulting anti-inflation policy that was forced on Carter included controlling public spending, limiting the expansion of the welfare state, and postponing popular tax cuts. Moreover, according to Biven, Carter argued that the ambitious policies of the Great Society were no longer possible in an age of limits and that the Democratic Party must by economic necessity become more centrist.

Jeffrey H. Richards - Drama, Theatre, and Identity in the American New Republic (2005).jpg

Jeffrey Richards examines a variety of phenomena connected to the stage, including closet Revolutionary political plays, British drama on American boards, American-authored stage plays, and poetry and fiction by early Republican writers. American theatre is viewed by Richards as a transatlantic hybrid in which British theatrical traditions provide material and templates by which Americans express themselves and their relationship to others. Through intensive analysis of plays, this book confronts matters of political, ethnic, and cultural identity by moving from play text to theatrical context and from historical event to audience demography.
