When World War II ended, the United States possessed one ot the largest armored forces in the world. The main battle tank of this force, the M4 Sherman was a robust and mechanically reliable vehicle, which had been introduced into service during the middle of 1942. Unfortunately by 1945, despite some upgrading of both its armor and armament, the M4 was at a decided disadvantage when it met German Tigers and Panthers.
Belatedly, Army officials tried to maka up for lost time, pushing development of a number of tank designs which could hold their own against the heavier German tanks. By early 1945, one of these new designs, the M2G Pershing Heavy Tank «as juOywO teaUy kn Md use, and a number wore rushed lo Europe to help shore up hard pressed American tankers. The M26 Pershing did much to redress the balance between American and German armor, and performed extremely well in the few encounters with German tanks which occurred before the war ended.
With Germany's surrender Army officials were able to examine the latest German tanks and designs under development. At the same time rrost of the latest Soviet tanks, many of which totally outgunned anything in the US or allied inventory, were examined. These examinations had a very sobering affect on American armored officers. As a result, attempts were made to upgrade the M26 Pershing, and to develop a successor to it, so as not to fall behind the Russians.

Although the Army was generally satisfied with the M41 Walker Bulldog tank, it was decided during late 1952 to begin development of a new vehicle to fill an Army requirement for an air transportable/deployable light tank. While the M41 was capable of being carried by existing transport aircraft it was not capable of being dropped by parachute.
The Korean War had underscored the need for the Army to be able to rapidly deploy forces to trouble spots on a moments notice. To meet this requirement a lighter, smaller tank that could be airlifted into combat was needed. While efforts were made late in the M41's production run to upgrade its armament nothing could be done to reduce its overall weight and size. This led to the Army's decision to develop a totally new vehicle.
The first vehicle the Army examined was a proposal from Cadillac, designated the 171. Armed with a 76mm cannon, this design was smaller, lighter and less expensive than the Bulldog. Lightly armored, the 171 had a relatively conventional layout In the event, the Army decided not to issue a production contact.

Grant Wacker - Heaven Below, Early Pentecostals an d American Culture (2001).jpg

Pentecostalsfundamentalist Christians who identify speaking in tongues and miraculous healing as divine giftshave long been ridiculed as poor, ignorant, violent and licentious. In this remarkable study, Wacker, raised a pentecostal and now a respected historian at Duke University, devastates the standard stereotypes. But he also departs from the Edenic model of denominational historiography, which imagines, for example, that the Azusa Street mission was a model of interracial harmony before the fatal break between its black and white founders. What emerges instead is a remarkably rich account of the inner lives of ordinary men and women who felt themselves filled with the power of the Holy Ghost. In 15 tightly organized chapters, Wacker offers a comprehensive ethnography of the first generation of pentecostalstheir faith, their social attitudes and their politics. He leads the reader through enchanted landscapes populated by angels and demons, pauses to assess reports of xenolalia (speaking in a human language allegedly unknown to the speaker) and surveys the gulfs that have divided charismatics from their detractors. It is difficult to imagine a more judicious treatment of the subject; meticulously researched, lyrically written and continuously illuminating, Wacker's book is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the origins of this influential current in American culture.

Grant Wacker - Religion in Nineteenth Century Amer ica (2000).jpg

Written from the perspective of the various denominations that thrived in the 19th century, this comprehensive survey of the middle period in America's religious past actually starts a little earlier, in the 1780s. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, the citizens of the newly-minted republic had to cope with more than the havoc wreaked on churches and denominations by the war. They also tasted for the first time the effects of two novel ideas incorporated in the Constitution and the First Amendment: the separation of church and state and the freedom to practice any religion.
Grant Wacker takes readers on a lively tour of the numerous religions and the major historical challenges--from the Civil War and westward expansion to immigration and the Industrial Revolution--that defined the century. The narrative focuses on the rapid growth of evangelical Protestants, in denominations such as Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists, and their competition for dominance with new immigrants' religions such as Catholicism and Judaism. The author discusses issues ranging from temperance to Sunday schools and introduces the personalities--sometimes colorful, sometimes saintly, and often both--of the men and women who shaped American religion in the 19th century, including Methodist bishop Francis Asbury, ex-slave Sojourner Truth, Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy, and evangelist Dwight L. Moody.
Religion in American Life explores the evolution, character, and dynamics of organized religion in America from 1500 to the present day. Written by distinguished religious historians, these books weave together the varying stories that compose the religious fabric of the United States, from Puritanism to alternative religious practices. Primary source material coupled with handsome illustrations and lucid text make these books essential in any exploration of America's diverse nature. Each book includes a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and index.

Andrew Downer Crain - The Ford Presidency, A Histo ry (2009).jpg

Though he occupied the oval office for less than three years, Gerald Ford made a number of key political moves and decisions during his presidency, moves which helped reunite the country following the divisions over the Vietnam War and helped restore America's faith in government sanctity following the Watergate scandal. This book provides a complete history of Ford's presidency from August 9, 1974, to January 20, 1977, looking at his presidency in the context of post - 1960s political unrest and subsequent government reform. It describes the severe economic crisis that struck the nation while Ford was president, explaining how and why his attempts to stem inflation were largely ineffective. It also covers what many remember as Ford's most controversial decision as president: his full and unconditional pardon of Richard Nixon in the aftermath of Watergate. In terms of foreign policy, the book chronicles Ford's signing of the Helsinki Accords, the fall of Vietnam and Cambodia, the Vladivostok Summit, the administration's attempts to negotiate a SALT II Agreement with the Soviet Union, and the administration's attempts to intervene in the civil war in Angola. The book closes with the election of 1976, when Ford held off a challenge by Ronald Reagan for the Republican nomination but ultimately lost to Democrat Jimmy Carter in the general election. It includes many photographs from the Ford Library, along with extensive endnotes citing interviews, secondary sources, and administration documents from the Ford Library and the National Archives.

Susanna Delfino, Michele Gillespie - Global Perspe ctives on Industrial Transformation in the America n South (2005).jpg

01 - USA - Susanna Delfino, Michele Gillespie - Global Perspective...n Industrial Transformation in the American South 2005.jpg

Covering a period from the late colonial age to World War I and beyond, this collection of essays places the economic history of the American South in an international light by establishing useful comparisons with the larger Atlantic and world economy. In an attempt to dispel long-lasting myths about the South, the essays analyze the economic evolution of the South from the slave era. The once-common conception of a backward, wholly agricultural antebellum South occupied only by wealthy planters, poor whites, and contented slaves has finally given way to one of economic and social dynamism as well as regional prosperity. In a coherent and cohesive progression of subjects, these essays show that the South was deeply enmeshed in the Atlantic economy since the colonial age and, after the Civil War, retained distinctive needs that caused increasing departure from the course northerners were taking on matters of political economy. This approach also helps explain the motivations behind the political choices made by the South as an eminently export-oriented region. This book shows that the South was not industrially slower to develop than either the majority of the northern states, especially in the West, or the countries of Western Europe. In fact, the apparently disappointing performance of the New South's economy appears to be the result of more pervasive and largely uncontrollable trends that affected the national as well as the international economy. Global Perspectives on Industrial Transformation in the American South makes an important contribution to the economic history of the South and to recent efforts to place American history in a more international context.

John R. Shook - The Dictionary Of Modern American Philosophers, 4 Volume Set (2005).jpg

The Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers includes both academic and non-academic philosophers, and a large number of female and minority thinkers whose work has been neglected. It includes those intellectuals involved in the development of psychology, pedagogy, sociology, anthropology, education, theology, political science, and several other fields, before these disciplines came to be considered distinct from philosophy in the late nineteenth century. Each entry contains a short biography of the writer, an exposition and analysis of his or her doctrines and ideas, a bibliography of writings, and suggestions for further reading. While all the major post-Civil War philosophers are present, the most valuable feature of this dictionary is its coverage of a huge range of less well-known writers, including hundreds of presently obscure thinkers. In many cases, the Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers offers the first scholarly treatment of the life and work.

William Kleinknecht - The Man Who Sold the World, Ronald Reagan and the Betrayal of Main Street Amer ica (2009).jpg

01 - USA - William Kleinknecht - The Man Who Sold the World, Ronal...ld Reagan and the Betrayal of Main Street America 2009.jpg

Since Ronald Reagan left office—and particularly after his death—his shadow has loomed large over American politics: Republicans and many Democrats have waxed nostalgic, extolling the Republican tradition he embodied, the optimism he espoused, and his abilities as a communicator.
This carefully calibrated image is complete fiction, argues award-winning journalist William Kleinknecht. The Reagan presidency was epoch shattering, but not—as his propagandists would have it—because it invigorated private enterprise or made America feel strong again. His real legacy was the dismantling of an eight-decade period of reform in which working people were given an unprecedented sway over our politics, our economy, and our culture. Reagan halted this almost overnight.
In the tradition of Thomas Frank’s What’s the Matter with Kansas?, Kleinknecht explores middle America—starting with Reagan’s hometown of Dixon, Illinois—and shows that as the Reagan legend grows, his true legacy continues to decimate middle America.

Kevin Courrier - Randy Newman, American Dreams (20 05).jpg

In addition to covering the life, music, and philosophy of Randy Newman, an enigmatic and audacious American composer, this biography looks at why he has been so largely unacknowledged—and misunderstood—by listeners and fans alike. Delving into the reasons for Newman's peripheral status on the cultural landscape, this suggests that, at heart, he has always been a musical outsider, that he has even built his mainstream career on a brilliant disguise. Using the conventions of American pop as a devious strategy, Newman incorporates into his barbed and satirical work the role of the untrustworthy narrator. In his songs, he wickedly enacts character dramas in order to play a variety of dubious roles: a slave trader in "Sail Away," a stalker in "Suzanne," a born-again yuppie in "It's Money That I Love," and an American demagogue in "Political Science." This is an illuminating portrait of an American artist as a masked man, an artful dodger who remains an American music enigma.

Richard Crockatt - The Fifty Years War, The United States and the Soviet Union in World Politics, 19 41 - 1991 (1994).jpg

01 - USA - Richard Crockatt - The Fifty Years War, The United Stat...d the Soviet Union in World Politics, 1941 - 1991 1994.jpg

For fifty years, relations between the United States and the Soviet Union were the deciding factor in international affairs. War against Germany brought them together in 1941 in an alliance that was decisive in securing Germany's defeat. Victory ultimately drove them apart, giving rise to the continuous, if fluctuating, antagonism that was known as the Cold War. In 1991, following the collapse of communism and the re-drawing of the political map of central Europe, the Soviet Union itself disintegrated and with it the Cold War. Only now is it possible to view these years as a defined period of history. 7L The Fifty Years War is an insightful examination of the complex relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, placing it in its global context. Richard Crockatt breaks new ground in seeking a synthesis of historical narrative and analysis of the global structures within which superpower relations developed. Crockett also looks at the role economics played in this relationship as well as political and military factors. The Fifty Years War is an authoritative and comprehensive history of the Cold War years and the relationship that has dominated world politics in the second half of the twentieth century.
