The Confiscation Acts were designed to sanction slave holding states by authorizing the Federal Government to seize rebel properties and grant freedom to slaves who fought with or worked for the Confederate military. In the first full account in more than twenty years of them, John Syrett examines the political contexts of the Acts, especially the debates in Congress, and demonstrates how the failure of the confiscation acts during the war presaged the political and structural shortcomings of Reconstruction after the war.

Nathan Glazer - From a Cause to a Style, Modernist Architecture's Encounter with the American City ( 2007).jpg

Modernism in architecture and urban design has failed the American city. This is the decisive conclusion that renowned public intellectual Nathan Glazer has drawn from two decades of writing and thinking about what this architectural movement will bequeath to future generations. In From a Cause to a Style, he proclaims his disappointment with modernism and its impact on the American city.

Writing in the tradition of legendary American architectural critics Lewis Mumford and Jane Jacobs, Glazer contends that modernism, this new urban form that signaled not just a radical revolution in style but a social ambition to enhance the conditions under which ordinary people lived, has fallen short on all counts. The articles and essays collected here--some never published before, all updated--reflect his ideas on subjects ranging from the livable city and public housing to building design, public memorials, and the uses of public space. Glazer, an undisputed giant among public intellectuals, is perhaps best known for his writings on ethnicity and social policy, where the unflinching honesty and independence of thought that he brought to bear on tough social questions has earned him respect from both the Left and the Right. Here, he challenges us to face some difficult truths about the public places that, for better or worse, define who we are as a society.

From a Cause to a Style is an exhilarating and thought-provoking book that raises important questions about modernist architecture and the larger social aims it was supposed to have addressed-and those it has abandoned.

Bernard Carl Rosen - Masks and Mirrors, Generation X and the Chameleon Personality (2001).jpg

As America experiences the growing pains associated with the rapid social changes in the economy, technology, and culture, various groups must develop coping mechanisms to help them deal with the anxiety that is brought on by such changes. Generation Xers, on the cutting edge of these changes, are no exception. More so than any other group, elite Xers, those who are succeeding in the new economy, have adopted a unique personality style, chameleonism, as a defense mechanism. People with a chameleon personality pretend to be what others want them to be in an effort to obtain for themselves the kind of security Xers feel previous generations have enjoyed, but which may not be available to their own generation. This riveting examination of the Xer generation sheds new light on the survival mechanisms employed by those who feel threatened by social changes, even as they participate in and benefit from them.

Dee Garrison - Bracing for Armageddon, Why Civil D efense Never Worked (2006).jpg

In Bracing for Armageddon, Dee Garrison pulls back the curtain on the U.S. government's civil defense plans from World War II through the end of the Cold War. Based on government documents, peace organizations, personal papers, scientific reports, oral histories, newspapers, and popular media, her book chronicles the operations of the various federal and state civil defense programs from 1945 to contemporary issues of homeland security, as well as the origins and development of the massive public protest against civil defense from 1955 through the 1980s. At a time of increasing preoccupation over national security issues, Bracing for Armageddon sheds light on the growing distrust between the U.S. government and its subjects in postwar America.

Forbidden Fruit tells the definitive story of the sexual values and practices of American teenagers, paying particular attention to how participating in organized religion shapes sexual decision-making. Merging analyses of three national surveys with stories from interviews with over 250 teenagers across America, Forbidden Fruit covers a wide range of topics, including sentiment about waiting to have sex until marriage, motivation to pursue sexual relationships, proclivity for same-sex attraction and behaviors, teenagers experience of virginity loss, and the frequency of several heterosexual practices.

01 - USA1 - Squadron - Armor Specials 6041 - Jim Mesko - Riverine,...ctorial History of the Brown Water War in Vietnam 1985.jpg

The war in Vietnam was often a sludy in contrasts. No better illustration of this can be found than in the role played by the United States Navy. In the Tonkin Gulf naval aviators, flying supersonic jets off the decks of huge super carriers, participated in the aerial campaign against North Vietnam, while cruisers and the Battleship New Jersey bombarded enemy coastal areas. Further south, a vast array of small craft, few of which were ocean going, carried out a variety of tasks along the coast and up the various rivers and canals which dissected this war torn land. And w hile much has been written about the aerial and bombardment campaign, little has been written about these small craft in the war. Yet in terms of men, ships, action, and heroism this little known aspect of the Navy's war in Vietnam deserves equal treatment with the more glamorous big-ship operations that caught the public's attention through newspaper reports and television. The sailors who manned these small fragile boats and often fought pitched battles with the Viet Con% (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) at small arms range and on occasion even had to repel boarders! The kind of warfare that was waged on the inland and coastal waters of Vietnam was last practiced by the United States Navy during the Civil War, almost exactly one-hundred years earlier. As a result much of the tactics were based on the earlier experiences of the French Union Forces, or were developed through trial and error. Mistakes were made, as was to be expected, but in the end the resourceful individual sailors of these varied forces learned their lessons well and were forged into formidable fighting forces which deprived the enemy (he use of these waterways.
In RIVERINE, I have tried to present a broad outline of the operations by the Brown Water Navy, as these forces came to be known, from their inception to the withdrawal of US Forces from Vietnam. The scope of this book covers the three major components of the Navy's riverine force and their subsidiary units. Each had its own distinct function but also worked in conjunction with the other two components when the situation dictated. Task force 115 (Market Time), had the responsibility for coastal patrol, surveillance, and interception of enemy gun runners on the high seas. Using equipment that ranged from Patrol aircraft such as the Neptune and Orion to small Swift Boats, which even included US Coast Guard cutters. Market Time carried out the usually monotonous duty of interdicting communist supplies along the coast of Vietnam. Task Force 116 (Game Warden), carried the war as far up the rivers and canals of Vietnam as their shallow draft boats would go. Using various modified landing craft, armored power boats, helicopters and even fixed wiog Broncos, they eventually swept the Viet Cong from the Mekong Delta.

T. Brown - War and Aftermath in Vietnam (1991).jpg

The Vietnam War is unique in its profound influence upon the American consciousness. America's longest war was also the most important military conflict since the Second World War, and significantly, the first war to receive television coverage. War and Aftermath in Vietnam makes a distinctive contribution as the first study to examine the conflict from a Vietnamese as well as a Western point of view. T. Louise Brown provides a thorough examination of the cultural, political, and historical dimensions of the war. The book combines a broad understanding of the background to the conflict in Vietnamese and world history with detailed material on United States military tactics and the failure of pacification. Chapters cover topics as diverse and as central as the administrations of Johnson, Kennedy and Nixon; religion, culture, and society in North and South Vietnam; and the nature of the "People's Revolutionary War" in Vietnam. The book will be of interest to those studying politics, international studies, and history, and to the general reader.

Tony Palmer - Getting Out of Debt and Staying Out (2007).jpg

Living with debt is an inevitable part of modern life. Just about everyone has debt in one form or another - a mortgage, an outstanding credit card balance, a car financing deal, a student loan - and many other types. So if we can't get rid of debt we need at least to learn how to handle it so that we can control it, before it controls us. In this book we look at a series of case studies and how people got into trouble with debt. They weren't stupid or irresponsible. Their problems arose because circumstances changed. Some changes could have been foreseen, others not - but they were things that could happen to anybody at any time - to you or me. This book will show you: How, if you take the right action at the right time, you can get matters straight. How to borrow in a way that will minimise the risk of getting into difficulties, and how to do it at the lowest cost. How, if the worst happens and you get into a complete financial mess, you can get out of it with the least long term damage.
CONTENTS: 1. Janet and John - an everyday story of professional folk hit by rising interest rates and one or two other problems 2. Gary and Sue - how things might have got worse 3. Janet and John revisited - how they triumphed over adversity 4. Gwen the graduate - dicing with debt and how she escaped a fate worse than death 5. Borrowing for the dream home - how to get the mortgage that is right for you 6. Credit - dealing with banks and other dangerous predators 7. Don't panic if it all goes wrong 8. If you're in a hole stop digging and start to climb out 9. If the worst comes to the worst 10. How to live in peace and freedom

Mark Falcoff - Cuba, The Morning After, Confrontin g Castro's Legacy (2008).jpg

As its title announces, this is a book about Cuba’s future. But it is also a book about the future of U.S.-Cuban relations.
It could hardly be otherwise. In spite of a forty-year period with no formal diplomatic relations, the United States and Cuba have never ceased to be close to one another—not simply geographically but in terms of their broader political imaginations as well. No Latin American country arouses the level of interest that Cuba perennially evokes; one need only visit any bookstore or library in the United States to establish this fact. And no American or foreign visitor to Cuba can come away from the island without being struck by how firmly Cubans of all classes and political ideologies have their gaze fixed across the Florida straits. Acting as a bridge of sorts is a large, relatively affluent, and politically well-organized exile community centered in southern Florida, hostile to the regime that governs its homeland, but intensely involved with the island and its people in myriad other ways.

Peter Fearon - Kansas in the Great Depression, Wor k Relief, the Dole, and Rehabilitation (2007).jpg

No part of the United States escaped the ravages of the Great Depression, but some coped with it better than others. Ranging widely over all of Kansas s 105 counties, Peter Fearon provides a detailed analysis of the key relief programs for both urban and rural areas and shows that the state s Republican administration effectively ran New Deal welfare policies. Kansas in the Great Depression is an insightful look at how federal, state, and local authorities worked together to deal with a national emergency, revealing the complexities of policy initiatives not generally brought to light in studies at the national level while establishing important links between pre-Roosevelt policies and the New Deal. It reaffirms the virtues of government programs run by dedicated public officials as it opens a new window on Americans helping Americans in their darkest hours.

Shane Hamilton - Trucking Country, The Road to Ame rica's Wal-Mart Economy (2008).jpg

Trucking Country is a social history of long-haul trucking that explores the contentious politics of free-market capitalism in post-World War II America. Shane Hamilton paints an eye-opening portrait of the rural highways of the American heartland, and in doing so explains why working-class populist voters are drawn to conservative politicians who seemingly don't represent their financial interests.

Hamilton challenges the popular notion of "red state" conservatism as a devil's bargain between culturally conservative rural workers and economically conservative demagogues in the Republican Party. The roots of rural conservatism, Hamilton demonstrates, took hold long before the culture wars and free-market fanaticism of the 1990s. As Hamilton shows, truckers helped build an economic order that brought low-priced consumer goods to a greater number of Americans. They piloted the big rigs that linked America's factory farms and agribusiness food processors to suburban supermarkets across the country.

Trucking Country is the gripping account of truckers whose support of post-New Deal free enterprise was so virulent that it sparked violent highway blockades in the 1970s. It's the story of "bandit" drivers who inspired country songwriters and Hollywood filmmakers to celebrate the "last American cowboy," and of ordinary blue-collar workers who helped make possible the deregulatory policies of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan and set the stage for Wal-Mart to become America's most powerful corporation in today's low-price, low-wage economy.

01 - USA1 - Tom Mangold, John Penycate - The Tunnels of Cu Chi, A ...l Rats in the Underground Battlefields of Vietnam 2005.jpg

At the height of the Vietnam conflict, a complex system of secret underground tunnels sprawled from Cu Chi Province to the edge of Saigon. In these burrows, the Viet Cong cached their weapons, tended their wounded, and prepared to strike. They had only one enemy: U.S. soldiers small and wiry enough to maneuver through the guerrillas’ narrow domain. The brave souls who descended into these hellholes were known as “tunnel rats.” Armed with only pistols and K-bar knives, these men inched their way through the steamy darkness where any number of horrors could be awaiting them–bullets, booby traps, a tossed grenade. Using firsthand accounts from men and women on both sides who fought and killed in these underground battles, authors Tom Mangold and John Penycate provide a gripping inside look at this fearsome combat. The Tunnels of Cu Chiis a war classic of unbearable tension and unforgettable heroes

Enrico Dal Lago, Constantina Katsari - Slave Syste ms, Ancient and Modern (2008).jpg

Ground-breaking edited collection charting the rise and fall of forms of unfree labour in the ancient Mediterranean and in the modern Atlantic, employing the methodology of comparative history. The eleven chapters in the book deal with conceptual issues and different approaches to historical comparison, and include specific case-studies ranging from the ancient forms of slavery of classical Greece and of the Roman empire to the modern examples of slavery that characterised the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States. The results demonstrate both how much the modern world has inherited from the ancient in regard to ideology and practice of slavery; and also how many of the issues and problems related to the latter seem to have been fundamentally similar across time and space.

Peter Alexander Meyers - Civic War and the Corrupt ion of the Citizen (2008).jpg

In this unique book, Peter Alexander Meyers leads us through the social processes by which shock incites terror, terror invites war, war invokes emergency, and emergency supports unchecked power. He then reveals how the domestic political culture created by the Cold War has driven these developments forward since 9/11, contending that our failure to acknowledge that this Cold War continues today is precisely what makes it so dangerous.

With eloquence and urgency Meyers argues that the mantra of our time—“everything changed on 9/11!”—is false and pernicious. By contrast, Civic War and the Corruption of the Citizen provides a novel account of long-term transformations in the citizen’s experience of war, the constitution of political powers, and public uses of communication, and from that firm historical basis explains how a convergence of these social facts became the pretext for unprecedented opportunism and irresponsibility after 9/11. Where others have observed that our rights are under attack, Meyers digs deeper and finds that today “government by the people” itself is at risk.

Sparkling with historical and philosophical insight, this is a dramatic diagnosis of the American political scene that at once makes clear the new position of the citizen and the necessity for active citizenship if democracy is to endure.

Robert Wuthnow - American Mythos (2008).jpg

America was built on stories: tales of grateful immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, Horatio Alger-style transformations, self-made men, and the Protestant work ethic. In this new book, renowned sociologist Robert Wuthnow examines these most American of stories--narratives about individualism, immigration, success, religion, and ethnicity--through the eyes of recent immigrants. In doing so, he demonstrates how the "American mythos" has both legitimized American society and prevented it from fully realizing its ideals. This magisterial work is a reflection and meditation on the national consciousness. It details how Americans have traditionally relied on narratives to address what it means to be strong, morally responsible individuals and to explain why some people are more successful than others--in short, to help us make sense of our lives. But it argues that these narratives have done little to help us confront new challenges. We pass laws to end racial discrimination, yet lack the resolve to create a more equitable society. We welcome the idea of pluralism in religion and values, yet we are shaken by the difficulties immigration presents. We champion prosperity for all, but live in a country where families are still homeless.

Concord - Armor at War 7001 - Steven J. Zaloga - T he M4 Sherman at War, European Theatre 1942-1945 ( 1995).jpg

The US Army was a relative latecomer to the tank business in World War 2. The US tank force on the eve of war In Europe in 1939 was that of second-rate power; indeed the US Army had fewer tanks than armies like Italy or Poland. The neglect of the US armored force was caused by a complicated set of conditions including the economic stagnation of the Great Depression, and the tendency towards isolationism in US foreign policy. By 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt had begun to commit the US Army to a major rebuilding due to the perception that the United States would eventually be dragged into war. An important element in this effort was the considerable expansion cf the US defense industry, to supply Lend Lease needs as well as the growing US Army.
The clearest evidence of the stagnation of American tark design was the US Army's first medium tank, the dreadful M2AI medium tank which was manufactured from December 1940 through August 1941. This embarrassing design was manufactured simply because no other types were available. It is a grim curiosity that the M2A1 entered production at exactly the same time that the T-34 medium tank entered production in the Soviet Union. Although US tank design had suffered from a lack of funding, the US Ordnance Corps had wisely chosen to invest its scanty budget in tank components, such as guns, transmissions, and suspensions. So when new tanks were demanded, the Ordnance Corps could -espond reasonably quickly, as occured in 1940.
