Roland Kelts - Japanamerica, How Japanese Pop Cult ure Has Invaded the U.S.(2006).jpg

"Japanamerica is the book I have been waiting for. It tells the incredible story of the way the colorful and eccentric world of Japanese entertainment and popular art has enriched our lives in the West. But it also deals with why it has a poetry that has taken Americans many years to understand and feel able to echo. Japan's holocaust was equally traumatic to the ones experienced by many Americans, and perhaps more sudden, more extreme and more focused. This story shows how today we all use movies, comics, music, art and advertising to face our past and its traumas, rather than to escape. The Japanese methods of facing the past are restrained and unusual, but ultimately glorious, and mean more to us in our post-9/11 era than ever they could before. Roland Kelts, part American, part Japanese, brings real insight to the way this union of hearts and souls through entertainment will continue to grow and draw two very different worlds together." -- --Pete Townshend, The Who

April Gentry - Critical Companion to Herman Melvil le, A Literary Reference to His Life And Work (200 6).jpg

This revision of Herman Melville A to Z (2001) is an addition to the publisher's Critical Companions series. Part 1 is a biography of Melville. Part 2 has entries on many of Melville's publications, including summaries and publication history, and for the more substantive works, critical commentary, entries on characters, and brief secondary bibliographies. The third section contains encyclopedic entries on people, places, publications, and events. The fourth section is made up of several appendixes: a chronology, a primary and secondary bibliography, selected contemporary reviews, selected letters between Melville and Hawthorne, and a genealogy extending from Melville's grandparents to his grandchildren.

A-Z entries ranging from Abolitionists to Zionism are the meat of this volume. Highlights include the whaling ship Acushnet, on which the author served; Melville's pseudonym, .A.V.; entries on Flogging and redestination; and even an entry on Copyright describing Melville's signing a petition to Congress in 1852. Many entries focus on people in Melville's life, including a host of writers and thinkers who influenced him, a wide circle of acquaintances, and around 30 relatives.

Enhanced by black-and-white illustrations, the book is made easier to use by an extensive index and cross-references between parts 1 and 3. Changes from Herman Melville A to Z include new critical-commentary sections, an updated bibliography, and revisions to the biography and suggestions for further study as well as the new contemporary reviews and selected letters in the appendixes. The separation of Melville's works (currently part 2) from the entries on related topics (currently part 3) is an improvement over the previous volume, as is the grouping of entries on characters under the publications in which they appear. The significance of revisions to the critical commentary outweighs the lack of changes to other entries now in part 3.

An excellent addition to an already strong series, recommended for high-school, public, and undergraduate collections.

Rodney P. Carlisle - The Colonial and Revolutionar y Era, Beginnings to 1783 (2009).jpg

This title offers a comprehensive look at the people, customs, and trends of the colonial and revolutionary era. Life in colonial America was often a struggle for survival and a constant lesson in adaptation. The early years of colonization - fraught with disease, starvation, and conflict with Native Americans - progressed to the development of regional communities in the form of agricultural plantations in the South and industrial port cities in the Northeast. The legalization of slavery and the signing of the Declaration of Independence were among many of the significant events of this period. Characterized by religious and political fervor, this tumultuous time in American history established many of the standards by which we live and govern today. "The Colonial and Revolutionary Era" delves into the way ordinary Americans lived, covering everything from the foods people ate to how they dressed and popular pastimes. Black-and-white photographs and boxed features throughout complete this user-friendly new book. Coverage of this title includes: crime and violence; entertainment and sports; labor and employment; military and wars; religion; science and technology; and, more.

Walter Bowart - Operation Mind Control (1978).jpg

The author of Operation Mind Control, Walter H. Bowart, died on December 18, 2007, according to his obituary in The New York Times and the reference page at Wikipedia. In 1978, while living in New Hampshire, I had the opportunity of hearing a local radio interview with Bowart concerning his book. I immediately went out and purchased a copy at the cover price of one dollar and ninety-five cents. Government censorship of the book has created a scarcity of available copies and has skyrocketed the market selling price. Everything the other reviewers at Amazon have alluded to regarding its supression by the government is true, for Operation Mind Control is indeed a mind blower. The State could not permit anyone to disclose such damaging information. The secrets revealed in this book openly describe a clandestine government at war with its own people, covert forces which Bowart describes as "the ryptocracy." This is precisely the kind of dangerous information that governments fear. Operation Mind Control is not conspiracy theory. It is documented fact. Governments live by lies, by bamboozling and hiding the truth from their subjects. Accordingly, the primary task of opponents of modern tyranny, as libertarian Murray N. Rothbard pointed out, is an educational one: to awaken the public to this manipulation and propaganda, by demystifying and desanctifying the state apparatus upon which such lies are built upon. Walter Bowart heroically accomplished this feat. Operation Mind Control spoke truth to power as few books published in the past thirty years have done. That is why the government tried to destroy it. Years ago I had the opportunity to discuss these matters with John Marks, the brilliant author of The Search For The Manchurian Candidate: The CIA and Mind Control. Mark's volume somehow escaped the government's relentless campaign waged upon its predecessor. I highly recommend his book in addition to Operation Mind Control. Two excellent documentaries tell the sordid and shocking story discussed in these books. They are, Mind Control: America's Secret War, and Bad Trip To Edgewood. Both are available at Google Video for viewing.

Squadron - Warships 4017 - Al Adcock - WWII US La nding Craft in Action (2003).jpg

Amphibious landing forces are charged with landing enough assault forces and supplies to maintain and reinforce a beachhead on enemy shores. This beachhead would be held until sufficient ground troops can land and carry the fight to the enemy and defeat him on his own soil.
The first recorded amphibious landing on enemy soil was carried out by a strong Persian force landing at Marathon, Greece in 490 BC. A much smaller Greek Army eventually defeated the Persian Army and the Persians were forced to withdraw. Julius Caesar of Rome employed amphibious forces when he conquered England in 54 BC. In 1066, Norman ruler William the Conqueror used amphibious forces to cross the English Channel and defeat the English forces at the Battle of Hastings.
During the American Revolution, General George Washington utilized the element of surprise and wooden rowboats to cross the Delaware River on 25 December 1776. His forces attacked British (Hessian) forces at Trenton, New Jersey. Washington's crossing of the Delaware marked the first time American forces had utilized amphibious warfare. In 1847, during the Mexican War, US Marines attacked Veracruz, Mexico from the sea. They secured the beach and defeated the Mexican forces. The US War Between the States (Civil War) produced few amphibious landings, with the exception of the Northern forces attacking the Batteries Tracy and Huger, part of the defenses of Mobile, Alabama in 1864.
The last US amphibious landings during the 19th Century occurred in the Philippines Islands, when American troops attacked Spanish forces during the 1898 Spanish-American War. This would not be the last time American forces would have to attack that island group. World War One saw no amphibious landings since American forces landed on friendly territory during that conflict.

Squadron - Warships 4016 - Michael C. Smith - US Light Carriers in action (2002).jpg

US naval aviation began on 10 November 1910, with the launch of an aircraft flown by Eugene Ely from a temporary flight deck constructed on the light cruiser BIRMINGHAM (CI.-2). Ely's flight was followed by a launch from a similar jury-rigged deck on the armored cruiser PENNSYLVANIA (ACR-4) on 18 January 1911. The Navy experimented with floatplanes during World War One. but by the end of the war it had become clear that the future of naval aviation as an offensive weapon required ships that could launch and land combat aircraft while at sea. The US Navy's first step in this direction was to obtain authori/ation lo convert a collier - the ex-USS JUPITER (AC-3) - into its first aircraft carrier, the OSS LANG-LEY (CV-1) in 1920. By the time the LANGLEY was ready for operation in 1922. the Navy had acquired two more vessels for conversion into carriers, the incomplete battlecruisers LEXINGTON and SARATOGA. The giant battlecruiser hulls were available due to the 1921 Washington Conference's stringent limitations on capital ship construction. These required all battlecruisers and battleships then under construction to be scrapped, with the exception of two per nation, which could be converted into aircraft carriers.

John Dennis Anderson - Student Companion to Willia m Faulkner (2007).jpg

One of America's greatest writers, William Faulkner wrote fiction that combined spellbinding Southern storytelling with modernist formal experimentation to shape an enduring body of work. In his fictional Yoknapatawpha County--based on the region around his hometown of Oxford, Mississippi--he created an entire world peopled with unforgettable characters linked into an intricate historical and social web. An introduction to the Nobel-Prize-winning author's life and work, this book devotes opening chapters to his biography and literary heritage and subsequent chapters to each of his major works. The analytical chapters start with his most accessible book, The Unvanquished, a Civil-War-era account of a boy's coming of age. The following chapters orient readers to elements of plot, character, and theme in Faulkner's masterpieces: The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, Light in August, and Absalom, Absalom! Also analyzed and discussed are some of Faulkner's most often anthologized short stories, including "A Rose For Emily" and "Barn Burning," and the longer stories "The Bear," "Spotted Horses," and "The Old Man" that were incorporated in the novels Go Down, Moses, The Hamlet, and If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem. Clear, insightful analyses of the elements of Faulkner's fiction are supplemented with alternative readings from a variety of critical approaches including gender, rhetorical, performance, and cultural studies perspectives.
