What is Cultural Imperialism?
Arguing early on that a term’s use in popular and scholarly discourse signifies both its power and its ‘actual’ definition, Tomlinson claims that “the concept of cultural imperialism is one which must be assembled out of its discourse”. This sets the tone for the relentless critical scrutiny of the rest of the work, with the author carefully assembling a system of arguments which ultimately cast a shadow of doubt on the legitimacy of defining aspects of U.S. and Western foreign interventions (cultural, economic, and ideological, for example) as ‘cultural imperialism’.

Jody C. Baumgartner - The American Vice Presidency Reconsidered (2006).jpg

John Adams famously called the vice presidency, "the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived." Harry Truman called it, "about as useful as a cow's fifth teat." How things have changed in a world where many consider Vice President Dick Cheney the most powerful figure in the current administration. Since 1960 the office of the vice presidency of the United States has evolved into a fundamentally different institution than the one the founders envisioned, attracting better-qualified aspirants who may be called upon to perform a variety of important tasks. No longer a ceremonial figurehead or legislative drudge, the vice president today consults closely with the president and plays an important role in executive decisions. Those who are chosen as running mates are examined more thoroughly than ever before, not merely for the boost they might give the presidential candidate in the general election, but also for the kind of president they might be if fate called upon them to serve. In a book that is as readable as it is fascinating, Baumgartner offers a corrective to the overwhelmingly negative view Americans have had of their vice presidents by demonstrating how the role has changed over time. Setting the stage with a visit to the Constitutional Convention and a brief look at pre-modern vice presidents, he examines the 19 men and one woman who have been vice presidents or candidates for the office since 1960. His insightful book is organized thematically according to the career path of the vice president-from the selection process through the campaign and nomination to election, service in office, and post-White House contributions.

M. Gonsalves, T.Howes, K. Stansell, G. Brozek - Ou t of Captivity, Surviving 1,967 Days in the Colomb ian Jungle (2009).jpg

USA Books - M. Gonsalves, T.Howes, K. Stansell, G. Brozek - Out of...ity, Surviving 1,967 Days in the Colombian Jungle 2009.jpg

On February 13, 2003, a plane carrying three American civilian contractors—Marc Gonsalves, Keith Stansell, and Tom Howes—crash-landed in the mountainous jungle of Colombia. Dazed and shaken, they emerged from the plane bloodied and injured as gunfire rained down around them. As of that moment they were prisoners of the FARC, a Colombian terrorist and Marxist rebel organization. In an instant they had become American captives in Colombia's volatile and ongoing conflict, which has lasted for almost fifty years.
In Out of Captivity, Gonsalves, Stansell, and Howes recount for the first time their amazing tale of survival, friendship, and, ultimately, rescue, tracing their five and a half years as hostages of the FARC. Their story takes you inside one of the world's most notorious terrorist organizations, going behind enemy lines with vivid and haunting imagery. Their words conjure a reality that few people have ever encountered—from sleeping on beds literally carved out of the jungle to escaping Colombian military air strikes under the cover of darkness to being bound with steel chains by their captors. Describing backbreaking starvation marches and forced isolation, the authors chronicle their confrontations and interactions with the FARC guerrilla soldiers—a motley crew of brainwashed, idealistic teenagers and seasoned vet-erans who've been around long enough to realize that the only way out of the FARC is in a body bag.
Though the physical punishments their bodies endured were unrelenting, the psychological battles they waged were the ultimate test of their resolve. With candid detail, Gonsalves, Stansell, and Howes relate the perilous mental struggles they each experienced, as they grappled with feelings of guilt, fear, and anxiety for the families and lives they'd left behind. Exposing the transformative power of captivity, they show how they turned these fears into strengths, using their memories and their families, their pasts and their futures, to motivate them in their quest for survival.
Despite the odds and the conditions, despite the chains and the silence, and despite the often tense relationships they experienced with their fellow Colombian hostages, they had one another, forging a bond that allowed them to cope with the horrific conditions of their confinement. This brotherhood enabled them to persevere through the worst that the FARC threw at them while always reminding them of their ultimate goal: freedom.
A harrowing account of one of the longest civilian hostage crises in United States history, Out of Captivity is a remarkable and compelling exploration of how far three Americans were willing to go as they fought to stay alive for themselves, their families, and one another.

Mona D. Sizer - Outrageous Texans, Tales of the Ri ch and Infamous (2008).jpg

When scandalous Texas tornado Miss "Texas" Guinan tried to take her burlesque review into Paris--France not Texas--the censors refused her entry into the country. She and her troupe of "30 really ravishing blondes" had performed their show for the entertainment of the passengers and crew of the steamship Paris in exchange for their passage across the Atlantic. The dance that drew the most attention featured the girls dancing nude except for high heels and two large fans, one held behind the back and one held over the front with the occasional fan closing "accidentally." Disappointed but not defeated, Miss Guinan chose to spin the refusal to her advantage. Her sexy revue would have a new name with implications that would ensure its success--she boasted that her show was so titillating that it was named "Too Hot for Paris." That got everyone's attention!
Miss Texas Guinan is just one of many larger-than-life personalities profiled in Outrageous Texans: Tales of the Rich and Infamous. From Janis Joplin to Racehorse Haynes and Joan Crawford to Kinky Friedman, Mona D. Sizer brings all of these colorful characters from the Lone Star State to life.

James G., Jr. Hollandsworth - Portrait of a Scient ific Racist, Alfred Holt Stone of Mississippi (200 8).jpg

In the years after Reconstruction, racial tension soared, as many white southerners worried about how to deal with the millions of free African Americans among them--an issue they termed the "negro problem." In an attempt to maintain the status quo, white supremacists resurrected old proslavery arguments and sought new justification in scientific theories purporting to "prove" people of African descent inherently inferior to whites. In Portrait of a Scientific Racist, James G. Hollandsworth, Jr., reveals how the conjectures of one of the country's most prominent racial theorists, Alfred Holt Stone, helped justify a repressive racial order that relegated African Americans to the margins of southern society in the early 1900s.
In this revealing biography, Hollandsworth examines the thoughts and motives of this renowned man, focusing primarily on Stone's most intensive period of theorizing, from 1900 to 1910. A committed and vocal white supremacist, Stone believed black southern workers were inherently lazy, a trait he attributed to their African genes and heritage. He asserted that slavery helped improve the black race but that opportunities still existed during Reconstruction to mold the freedmen into efficient workers. Stone's central--yet unspoken--goal was to devise a way to maintain an obedient, productive labor force willing to work for low wages. Writing from both Washington, D.C. and his cotton plantation in the Mississippi Delta, Stone published numerous essays and collected over 3000 articles and pamphlets on the "American Race Problem"--including those written by bitter racists and enthusiastic "race boosters."
Though Stone lacked the credentials typically associated with scholarly experts of the time, he became an authority on the subject of black Americans, in part because of his close friendship with fellow scientific racist and statistician Walter F. Willcox. An early member of the American Economic Association and other academic groups, Stone went on to serve as head scholar of a division for race studies within the Carnegie Foundation. Interestingly, Stone recruited W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington to collaborate with him on a major study for the Foundation, continuing his tendency to incorporate all perspectives into his study of race.
Hollandsworth uses Stone's extensive correspondence with Willcox, Du Bois, and Washington, as well as his personal writings--both published and unpublished--to reveal the secrets of this fascinating, yet misguided, figure.

Ashley Lavelle - The Death of Social Democracy (20 08).jpg

Lavelle provides an original argument about the death of social democracy. He argues that the political-economic context of the 21st Century means that social democratic projects cannot be revived as a result of the pressures of economic decline since the end of the post-war boom, globalization, European integration and ideological developments in favour of the free market. These pressures have led social democrats to embrace neo-liberal policies and become threatened by minor parties and Independent politicians. This provocative study: argues that social democracy cannot be resurrected; examines how the decline of social democracy has increased popularity of minor parties and independents; and, explores the reasons for social democratic membership and electoral decline. This is an important book for scholars engaged in the future of social democracy and the broader themes of world politics, political parties, social movements and globalization.

Osprey - Fortress 33 - Gordon L. Rottman - Specia l Forces Camps in Vietnam 1961 - 70 (2005).jpg

In 1961 US Special Forces units began entering remote areas of Vietnam dominated by the Viet Cong. Their task was to organize local defense and strike forces aimed at stopping the enemy from gaining further control of such areas. The Green Berets set up fortified camps from which indigenous troops defended local villages and attacked and harassed the enemy. How these camps were constructed, developed, and defended is documented here for the first time. This book also covers the weapons, barriers, and obstacles used in these camps, providing specific examples of camp design, and details how they withstood the test of battle against a determined and resourceful enemy.

Pocket Essentials is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. At the beginning of the 1840s the proud tribes of the North American Indians looked across the plains at the seemingly unstoppable expansion of the white man's West. During the decades of conflict that followed, as the new world pushed onward, the Indians saw their way of life disappear before their eyes. Over the next 40 years they clung to a dream of freedom and a continuation of their traditions, a dream that was repeatedly shattered by the whites. This Pocket Essential Guide charts the savage series of battles, treacheries, massacres, and ambushes that shaped those turbulent years. It recounts all the key engagements, from the Minnesota Massacre to the Battle of Wounded Knee, often using eyewitness reports of the time. It also offers an in-depth analysis of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and attempts to separate the tall tales from the truth.

Osprey - Fortress 06 - A Konstam - American Civil War Fortifications (1), Coastal brick and stone fo rts (2003).jpg

The 50 years before the American Civil War saw a boom in the construction of coastal forts in the United States of America. These stone and brick forts stretched from New England to the Florida Keys, and as far as the Mississippi River. At the start of the war some were located in the secessionist states, and many fell into Confederate hands. Although a handful of key sites remained in Union hands throughout the war, the remainder had to be won back through bombardment or assault. This book examines the design, construction and operational history of those fortifications, such as Fort Sumter, Fort Morgan and Fort Pulaski, which played a crucial part in the course of the Civil War.

USA Books - Osprey - Fortress 68 - Ron Field - American Civil War ...ortifications 3, The Mississippi and River Forts 2007.jpg

The Mississippi River played a decisive role in the American Civil War. The Confederate fortifications that controlled the lower Mississippi valley were put to the test in the lengthy Federal campaign of 1862-63. Vicksburg was a fortress city, known as the "Gibraltar of the Confederacy," whose capture is often seen as the key to victory in the war.

This book explores the fortifications of the river valley, focusing on Vicksburg and its defenses which boasted a network of forts, rifle pits, and cannon embrasures surrounding the city and examining the strengths and weaknesses of the fortifications when under siege. Also examined are numerous other fortified strongholds, including New Orleans, Port Hudson, New Madrid and, forts Henry and Donelson, all lavishly illustrated with full color artwork and cutaways.

John T. Flynn - The Decline of the American Republ ic (2007).jpg

In 1955, John T. Flynn saw what few others journalist did: the welfare-warfare state conspired to bring down American liberty. The New Deal combined with World War Two had fastened leviathan control over a country born in liberty.
This early analysis of the causes of the Great Depression and the failure of the New Deal also notes a point later demonstrated in detail by Robert Higgs: the economic boom of WW2 was false in every way, an artifice created by misleading government data and inflationary finance.
