The status of American Indians has long been rooted in a view of Indians as members of indigenous polities with distinct cultures. Often, these cultures have been characterized by dominant colonial authorities as "savage " or "primitive, " and it is the discipline of anthropology that, willingly and wittingly, or not, helped to make the idea of "the primitive " into a social reality. Consequently, the "tribal slot " inhabited by American Indians -with both its benefits and its oppressions -is difficult to imagine without the discipline of anthropology.A Companion to the Anthropology of American Indians contains 27 original contributions by leading scholars who work actively as researchers in American Indian communities, or on the topic of American Indians. This is one of those books that have people polarized. Anyone who attempts to balance this with three stars will get from both sides.
The first paragraph of the introduction lets you know what you are in for:
The story you are about to read is true. The names have not been changed to protect the guilty. This book may have the effect of changing your life. After reading this book you will never look at national and world events in the same way again.
I pretty much keep up with events and try to make connections. However I leave it up to the authors (Gary Allen with Larry Abraham) to make their point.
This book has eight chapters:

Gary Allen (1936 – 29 November 1986) was an American conservative journalist.

As a student, he was majoring in history at Stanford University and studied at California State University, Long Beach. Gary Allen was a prominent member of the John Birch Society, of which he was a spokesman. He contributed to magazines such as Conservative Digest and American Opinion since 1964. He also was the speech writer for George Wallace during the Alabama Governor Presidential campaigns and was adviser to the conservative Texas millionaire Nelson Bunker Hunt.

In 1972, Gary Allen wrote with Larry Abraham a famous book None Dare Call It Conspiracy (prefaced by John G. Schmitz), which was a best seller (said to have sold over five million copies worldwide) during the United States presidential election. An investigator of US financial, industrial, and political elites, he wrote other books about the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission, claiming that that the term “New World Order” was used by a secretive elite dedicated to the destruction of all national sovereignties.

He died in 1986, at the age of 50, while publishing Say "No!" to the new world order.

This story was written back in 1942, so it is rather dated as far as WWII history is concerned. The U.S.S. Lexington was a battle cruiser converted to an aircraft carrier while still in the shipbuilding process. This famous aircraft carrier was one of the handful the U.S. kept in the Pacific to hold back the Japanese onslaught at the beginning of World War II.
Johnson details the life of the ship prior to her sinking. He interviews the crew and gets the feel for life aboard an aircraft carrier. Since he is writing in 1942, he details the force formation the Lex was sailing with, by saying Cruiser I, or Carrier II. Carrier II is obviously the Yorktown. References to the enemy are in a derogatory and rascist manner, so this sets the book back.
This book gives a good feel to what is was like in 1942. The U.S. was battling for its life, and the enemy were evil. News was censored, so journalists couldn't not report everything. A nice read for a WWII era book.

This is the exciting story of the events and operations of the USS Steele, DE-8, in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of War from July 1943 to September 1945.
In 1943, as one of the first two Destroyer Escorts in the Southwest Pacific, this ship escorted convoys through submarine-infested waters in the area of the Solomon and Marshall Islands and was one of the first ships into Majuro, Kwajalein, and Eniwetok. In 1944 the USS Steele, DE-8, escorted convoys to Saipan and Guam, and assisted in the raids on Marcus and Wake Islands and the shore bombardment in the Eastern Carolines. The ship participated in the invasion of the Palaus and Leyte. The vessel was engaged in the training of Allied submarines in evasive tactics to thwart Japanese submarine attacks on Allied shipping. The ship and its crew of 186 officers and men sailed 142,439 miles or equal to 5.7 times around the world in the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean in contributing to the defeat of the Japanese in WWII.
