"Water in the West" offers a lively primer on the region's most precious and scarce resource. This volume collects the best reporting on the subject, drawn from the pages of "High Country News," the newspaper that has set the standard for coverage of environmental issues in the West. Beginning with an exhilarating account of the 1983 Colorado River floods that almost destroyed Glen Canyon Dam through recent articles tracking the water quests of Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, and Tuscon, the book provides compelling perspectives on the issues and controversies that have roiled water politics in the West over the past two decades. The tensions between the need for water in this vast, arid region and society's demands that rivers and their fish and wildlife be restored to health are explored in chapters on the Northwest salmon crisis, Glen Canyon Dam, federal and urban water projects, Native American water rights, water quality, wilderness water rights, watershed restoration, and water management.

Gary Clayton Anderson - The Conquest Of Texas, Eth nic Cleansing In The Promised Land, 1820-1875 (200 5).jpg

This is not your grandfather's history of Texas. Portraying nineteenth-century Texas as a cauldron of racist violence, Gary Clayton Anderson shows that the ethnic warfare dominating the Texas frontier can best be described as ethnic cleansing. The Conquest of Texas is the story of the struggle between Anglos and Indians for land. Anderson tells how Scotch-Irish settlers clashed with farming tribes and then challenged the Comanches and Kiowas for their hunting grounds. Next, the decade-long conflict with Mexico merged with war against Indians. For fifty years Texas remained in a virtual state of war. By confronting head-on the romanticized version of Texas history that made heroes out of Houston, Lamar, and Baylor, Anderson helps us understand that the history of the Lone Star state is darker and more complex than the mythmakers allowed.

Raymond Plant - The Neo-Liberal State (2009).jpg

The aim of the book is two-fold. First of all it is to provide a fair, complete and analytical account of the Neo-liberal conception of the role and function of the state in modern society. The second aim is to provide a critical assessment of some of the central elements of this conception. The book will look at the emphasis of Neo-liberals on procedural and rule governed approaches to the role of the state rather than outcome or end state views of the role of government and to consider how this conception of politics relates to issues such as the rule of law, freedom, justice, rights, the relationship to the market economy, to civil society and to look at the role of government in relation to the provision of welfare and public sector services more generally. It builds up the Neo-liberal case in respect of these aspects of modern society by drawing upon the works of central Neo-liberal thinkers such as Hayek, Mises, Menger, as well as thinkers such as Oakeshott, Nozick and Rotbard who are not directly Neo-liberals but whose works have been important for the development of central Neo-liberal themes.

Yukinori Komine - Secrecy in US Foreign Policy (20 08).jpg

This title examines the pursuit of strict secrecy by President Nixon and his National Security Advisor Kissinger in foreign policy decision-making as a principle characteristic of the US rapprochement with China. Moreover it sheds new light on the complexity and dynamism of the evolution of new China initiatives and demonstrates the existence of many policy options and different perspectives among US officials. It focuses on three major elements of the US rapprochement with China: conception - the presidential leadership, the revitalization of the National Security system and secrecy in bureaucratic rivalry; implementation - the evolution of policy option studies and the private signal exchange; and, direct talks - the major security issues during the behind the scene talks in Kissinger's trips to Beijing and Nixon's trip to China.Original and compelling, this book looks at the similarities and differences between Nixon's and Kissinger's views on China and the rivalry between them and the State Department regarding the timing and issues of US negotiations with China. Newly declassified materials help to identify key questions and highlight the dynamics of events to make this study suited to courses on foreign policy analysis, Cold War history and East Asian studies.

Wallace W. Zane - Journeys to the Spiritual Lands, The Natural History of a West Indian Religion (19 99).jpg

Although much has been written on the Afro-Catholic syncretic religions of Vodou, Candomble, and Santeria, the Spiritual Baptists--an Afro-Caribbean religion based on Protestant Christianity--have received little attention. This work offers the first detailed examination of the Spiritual Baptists or "Converted". Based on 18 months of fieldwork on the Island of St. Vincent (where the religion arose) and among Vincentian immigrants in Brooklyn, Zane's analysis makes a contribution to the literature on African-American and African Diaspora religion and the anthropology of religion more generally.

Allen Forte - Listening to Classic American Popula r Songs (2001).jpg

In the twenties, thirties, and forties, now-legendary American songwriters and lyricists created a repertoire of popular songs, songs that have captured the hearts of generations of music lovers. George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael and many others, along with such lyricists as Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, and Dorothy Fields, produced extraordinary songs of signal importance to the American musical heritage. In this book Allen Forte shares his love of American popular song. He discusses in detail twenty-three songs, ranging from Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm" (1924) to Irving Berlin's "Steppin' Out with My Baby" (1947), guiding readers and listeners toward a deeper appreciation of this vital and engaging music.

Alberto Alesina and Edward Glaeser - Fighting Pove rty in the US and Europe, A World of Difference (2 004).jpg

This probing of the forces behind 'American exceptionalism', as measured by a much smaller welfare state than in Europe, is immensely important. The authors take a multi-discipline approach and consider many factors, including narrowly economic variables, political institutions, racial and ethnic diversity, the effects of wars, attitudes toward the poor, and still others. Their findings are sometimes surprising and frequently provocative. This monograph will quickly become the foundation of further literature on a subject of enormous significance.

Squadron - Armor Walk Around Color Series 5708 - D avid Doyle - Cadillac Gage V-100 Commando (2008).jpg

Squadron Signal's new book on the Cadillac Gage V-100 Commando fills in the gap between the WW2 armored cars like the M8 / M20 Greyhound and the present day USMC LAV25 and later US Army Stryker based LAV III. Several publications have covered the Vietnam use of the XM706, the US military designation of the V-100 Commando.

Squadron's V-100 Walk Around book with its detailed images is great source for the model builder Particularly with the release of Hobby Boss 1/35 M706). It is an essential complement to Richard Lathrop's "...V-100 Commando 1960-71" book by Osprey Publishing and R. P. Hunnicutt's Armored Car: "A History of American Wheeled Combat Vehicles" by Presidio Press.

However there is only one photo of the engine compartment. Photos of the engine compartment with the interior panels removed would allow model makers to fill in the engine compartment. Hopefully we may see photos from veterans of a working vehicle interior on the web. Follow the images bellow to different websites with images of the M706.

Lynda Morgenroth - Boston Firsts, 40 Feats of Inno vation and Invention that Happened First in Boston and Helped Make America Great (2006).jpg

USA Books - Lynda Morgenroth - Boston Firsts, 40 Feats of Innovati...ned First in Boston and Helped Make America Great 2006.jpg

Boston Firsts! is about everything (well, almost!) that happened first in Boston and changed life elsewhere: from the first lighthouse and public library to the first madam and ready-made suit. Boston-based journalist and essayist Lynda Morgenroth has written forty original essays on the city’s long history of innovation, from the colonial era to the recent past. These lively takes on Boston’s innovative history range from the first use of ether in publicly performed painless surgery to the first school desegregation court case to the one—and only—automatic bargain basement. Consider this: Ice cut from Boston ponds and shipped to hot climates became a worldwide industry. A controversial kidney transplant between twin brothers marked the start of organ transplantation. Attempts to breed a belligerent fighting dog created the sweet-natured Boston terrier, the first dog breed developed in the U.S. The glorious Massachusetts 54th Regiment, led by a Boston Brahmin, was the first black army regiment in U.S history. First newspaper, novel, subway, telephone, gay marriage— the beat goes on. Ranging from advances in science and engineering—like the smallpox inoculation and the Boston Harbor cleanup—to innovations in culture and society— Fannie Farmer’s cookbook, the YMCA, and Boston cream pie—the collection investigates, celebrates, and integrates America’s workshop of ideas.

Charles D. Cashdollar - A Spiritual Home, Life in British and American Reformed Congregations, 1830- 1915 (2000).jpg

USA Books - Charles D. Cashdollar - A Spiritual Home, Life in Brit...sh and American Reformed Congregations, 1830-1915 2000.jpg

An exploration of congregational life inside British and American Reformed churches between 1830 and 1915. At a time when scholars have become interested in the day-to-day experiences of local congregations, this work reaches back into the 19th century, a critically formative period in Anglo-American life, to examine the historical roots of congregational life. Taking the perspective of the laity, Charles D. Cashdollar ranges widely from worship and music to fund-raising and administration, from pastoral care to social work, from prayer meetings to strawberry festivals, from the sanctuary to the kitchen. Firmly rooted in broader currents of gender, class, notions of middle-class respectability, increasing expectations for personal privacy, and patterns of professionalization, he finds that there was a gradual shift in emphasis during these years from piety to fellowship. The book is based on records, publications and memorabilia from about 150 congregations representing eight denominations.

Bonnie Angelo - First Families, The Impact of the White House on Their Live (2007).jpg

What is it like to be America's First Family? In this wonderfully engaging book, Bonnie Angelo, Time correspondent and acclaimed author of First Mothers, probes two hundred years of American history to tell the story of real life within the White House walls—how presidents, their wives, children, and extended families worked to create a home in an imposing national monument while attempting to keep their private lives from the public domain. First Families chronicles exhilarating moments as well as dark days at the nation's most famous address, with fascinating, behind-the-headline accounts of picture-book weddings, gossipy love affairs, rollicking children, domestic squabbles, and tragic deaths. From activist wives Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton to reluctant occupants Bess Truman and Jacqueline Kennedy, to those such as Mary Todd Lincoln, Dolley Madison, and madcap debutante Alice Roosevelt, who embraced their new address and status, here is an unforgettable human portrait of our First Families and how they coped, stumbled, or thrived in the national spotlight.

Thomas Donnelly - Ground Truth, The Future of U.S. Land Power (2008).jpg

The small size of America's land forces has been, and for years to come will remain, the tightest constraint on U.S. military strategy. The cutbacks of the Clinton years and, following the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Bush Administration's failure to foresee the need for larger ground forces have created a double bind: it is difficult to win a Long War with a small force. Remedying this most dire divergence between American military ends and American military means will be a severe challenge to the next administration, and indeed for at least a decade. Building the land forces America needs will take much time, money, and political willpower. Ground Truth is a basis for discussion and a plan of policy action.
