Walt Disney (1901-1966) was one of the most significant creative forces of the twentieth century, a man who made a lasting impact on the art of the animated film, the history of American business, and the evolution of twentieth-century American culture. He was both a creative visionary and a dynamic entrepreneur, roles whose demands he often could not reconcile. In his compelling new biography, noted animation historian Michael Barrier avoids the well-traveled paths of previous biographers, who have tended to portray a blemish-free Disney or to indulge in lurid speculation. Instead, he takes the full measure of the man in his many aspects.A consummate storyteller, Barrier describes how Disney transformed himself from Midwestern farm boy to scrambling young businessman to pioneering artist and, finally, to entrepreneur on a grand scale. Barrier describes in absorbing detail how Disney synchronized sound with animation in Steamboat Willie; created in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sympathetic cartoon characters whose appeal rivaled that of the best live-action performers; grasped television's true potential as an unparalleled promotional device; and - not least - parlayed a backyard railroad into the Disneyland juggernaut.Based on decades of painstaking research in the Disney studio's archives and dozens of public and private archives in the United States and Europe, "The Animated Man" offers freshly documented and illuminating accounts of Disney's childhood and young adulthood in rural Missouri and Kansas City. It sheds new light on such crucial episodes in Disney's life as the devastating 1941 strike at his studio, when his ambitions as artist and entrepreneur first came into serious conflict. Beginning in 1969, two and a half years after Disney's death, Barrier recorded long interviews with more than 150 people who worked alongside Disney, some as early as 1922. Now almost all deceased, only a few were ever interviewed for other books.Barrier juxtaposes Disney's own recollections against the memories of those other players to great effect. What emerges is a portrait of Walt Disney as a flawed but fascinating artist, one whose imaginative leaps allowed him to vault ahead of the competition and produce work that even today commands the attention of audiences worldwide.

R. Barton Palmer - Nineteenth-Century American Fic tion on Screen (2007).jpg

The process of translating works of literature to the silver screen is a rich field of study for both students and scholars of literature and cinema. The fourteen essays collected here provide an up-to-date survey of the important films based on, or inspired by, nineteenth-century American fiction, from James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans to Owen Wister's The Virginian. Many of the major works of the American canon are included, including The Scarlet Letter, Moby Dick and Sister Carrie. The starting point of each essay is the literary text itself, moving on to describe specific aspects of the adaptation process, including details of production and reception. Written in a lively and accessible style, the book includes production stills and full filmographies. Together with its companion volume on twentieth-century fiction, the volume offers a comprehensive account of the rich tradition of American literature on screen.

Samuel Willard Crompton - The Scopes Monkey Trial (2010).jpg

After the passage of the Butler Act, which made it unlawful for a state-funded school in Tennessee to teach that humans evolved from lower organisms, 24-year-old high school teacher John Scopes intentionally violated the law. Arrested and charged on May 5, 1925, Scopes became the centerpiece in a trial that pitted two of the finest legal minds of the time against one another. Prosecutor William Jennings Bryan's participation in the trial served as the capstone to his prior unsuccessful advocacy to cut off funds to schools that taught evolution. Prominent trial attorney Clarence Darrow, an agnostic, spoke for the defense. This case, which was the first to be broadcast via radio, was a critical turning point in the creation vs. evolution controversy that continues today. "The Scopes Monkey Trial" has since been fictionalized in a play (1955), a film (1960), and three television films (1965, 1988, and 1999), all called "Inherit the Wind". "The Scopes Monkey Trail: Debate over Education" explains how this pivotal court case shaped the way evolution and creationism is approached in classrooms.

Barbara Bennett - Understanding Jill McCorkle (200 0).jpg

"Understanding Jill McCorkle" introduces readers to the novels and short story collections of Jill McCorkle's growing canon. Since 1984 McCorkle has written five novels and two books of short stories, entering the publishing world, as one reviewer noted, "with the literary equivalent of a rebel yell". Filling the gap of critical study on McCorkle, Barbara Bennett analyzes the widely read and admired output of this prolific southern woman writer. Bennett identifies and discusses the diverse characters, thematic concerns and keen sense of language that distinguish McCorkle's work. Bennett offers a brief overview of McCorkle's life, traces the influence on her work, and places her decisively in the "third generation" of 20th-century southern writers. While noting McCorkle's links to such prominent southern women writers as Eudora Welty and Flannery O'Connor, Bennett explains how McCorkle's characterizations, attitude of affirmation and references to popular culture distance her from her predecessors. Bennett devotes individual chapters to each of McCorkle's novels and story collections. She discusses the themes that unify these diverse works, including the tension between independence and dependence, the imbuing presence of strength in femininity, the direct conflict between the nurturing of others and the preservation of self, and the opposition of purity and virginity to sexual freedom and expression. Bennett explores McCorkle's development of characters ranging from a young white girl approaching womanhood to a troubled middle-aged man reviewing his life's choices, from an elderly black woman on the verge of retirement to a yound minister struggling with his career path. She finds that in such rich and varied voices, McCorkle crafts stories of a region no longer burdened by the past but now grappling with ordinary family problems.

Steve Berry - The Alexandria Link, A Novel (2007).jpg

Cotton Malone retired from the high-risk world of elite operatives for the U.S. Justice Department to lead the low-key life of a rare-book dealer. But his quiet existence is shattered when he receives an anonymous e-mail: “You have something I want. You’re the only person on earth who knows where to find it. Go get it. You have 72 hours. If I don’t hear from you, you will be childless.” His horrified ex-wife confirms that the threat is real: Their teenage son has been kidnapped. When Malone’s Copenhagen bookshop is burned to the ground, it becomes brutally clear that those responsible will stop at nothing to get what they want. And what they want is nothing less than the lost Library of Alexandria.
A cradle of ideas–historical, philosophical, literary, scientific, and religious–the Library of Alexandria was unparalleled in the world. But fifteen hundred years ago, it vanished into the mists of myth and legend–its vast bounty of wisdom coveted ever since by scholars, fortune hunters, and those who believe its untold secrets hold the key to ultimate power.
Now a cartel of wealthy international moguls, bent on altering the course of history, is desperate to breach the library’s hallowed halls–and only Malone possesses the information they need to succeed. At stake is an explosive ancient document with the potential not only to change the destiny of the Middle East but to shake the world’s three major religions to their very foundations.
Pursued by a lethal mercenary, Malone crosses the globe in search of answers. His quest will lead him to England and Portugal, even to the highest levels of American government–and the shattering outcome, deep in the Sinai desert, will have worldwide repercussions.

Cynthia Clark Northrup - The American Economy, A H istorical Encyclopedia (2009).jpg

This is a work designed as "a reference tool for anyone who wishes to learn more about the role of economic policy in American history" from colonial times to the present. Volume 1 provides more than 500 brief, alphabetically arranged entries with information on, among other topics, concepts such as Ecosocialism, Globalization, and Industrial heartland; prominent individuals such as Henry Ford, John Maynard Keynes, and Ralph Nader; and events such as French and Indian War, Industrial Revolution, and the Yazoo land companies scandal. Most of the contributors are faculty connected with higher education. The writing style is geared to upper-level secondary-school students.
Volume 2 presents 31 essays and 20 primary source documents. The signed essays are intended to be read as a whole, often running from three to five pages. Unlike the short entries in the first volume, they offer relatively comprehensive treatment of a subject and its history, connection with other events, and contemporary impact on American society. Essay topics range from "Energy Policy" to "Intellectual Property" to "Urbanization," and all contain a brief bibliography of serial and monographic sources. As with any collection of essays, writing style varies by contributor. The primary source document section gives readers the full text of, for example, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the Emancipation Proclamation, and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society speech. Volume 2 concludes with a lengthy bibliography and very detailed subject index.
This is the type of reference source that will hold its value even as more and more reference materials migrate from print to electronic format (although it is also offered in an e-book version). Rather than attempting to offer up-to-date facts and figures, it focuses on definitions, identifications, and carefully considered overviews. It will be a welcome addition to reference collections serving primarily secondary-school and undergraduate students. RBB

Brian Massumi - The Politics of Everyday Fear (199 3).jpg

Larded with obscurely academic language but including some eclectic offerings, this volume focuses on, as the editor writes, "the saturation of social spaces by fear." In a first section on border experiences, Guillermo Gomez-Pena offers a bilingual performance poem that traces the cultural misunderstandings between Latinos and Anglos, Catholics and Protestants. A section on "mutations of domination" includes mass murderer Charles Manson's bizarre, mesmerizing court testimony and a lengthy analysis, by Steven Shaviro, of David Cronenberg's visceral films. In a section on "dominations of mutation," there is an excerpt from Todd Haynes's film script Poison , as well as an absorbing essay by Sandra Buckley on the tortured politics of writing about pornographic Japanese comic books. Other essays take on technological risk, the aberrations of shopping, violence toward women in American television and the anxiety expressed in Australian cinema. Because the book is organized around such a loose theme, its value comes from some components rather than its whole. Massumi teaches in the Graduate Program in Communication at McGill University.

Jonathan Boyarin - Remapping Memory, The Politics of TimeSpace (1994).jpg

Remapping Memory was first published in 1994. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.
The essays in this book focus on contested memories in relation to time and space. Within the context of several profound cultural and political conflicts in the contemporary world, the contributors analyze historical self-configurations of human groups, and the construction by these groups of the spaces they shape and that shape them. What emerges is a view of the state as a highly contingent artifact of groups vying for legitimacy-whether through their own sense of "insiderhood," their control of positions within hierarchies, or their control of geographical territories.
Boyarin's lead essay shows how the supposedly "objective" categories of space and time are, in fact, specific products of European modernity. Each case study, in turn, addresses the (re)constitution of space, time, and memory in relation to an event either of historical significance, like the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, or of cultural importance, like the Indian preoccupation with reincarnation. These ethnographic studies explore fundamental questions about the nature of memory, the limits of politics, and the complex links between them.

William V. Spanos - America's Shadow, An Anatomy o f Empire (1999).jpg

Examines Western imperialism from the Roman Empire-Vietnam A study of imperialism that stretches from ancient Rome to the post–Cold War world, this provocative work boldly revises our assumptions about the genealogy of the West. Rather than locating its source in classical Greece, William V. Spanos argues, we should look to ancient Rome, which first articulated the ideas that would become fundamental to the West’s imperial project. These founding ideas, he claims, have informed the American national identity and its foreign policy from its origins. The Vietnam War is at the center of this book. In the contradiction between the "free world" logic used to justify U.S. intervention in Vietnam and the genocidal practices used to realize that logic, Spanos finds the culmination of an imperialistic discourse reaching back to the colonizing rationale of the Roman Empire. Spanos identifies the language of expansion in the "white" metaphors used in Western philosophical discourse since the colonization of Greek thought by the Romans. He shows how these metaphors, and their use in metaphysical discourse, have long been complicit in the violence of imperialism. Unique in the context of postcolonial studies, this book emphasizes what is largely overlooked by commentators on imperialism: its metaphysical source. By interpreting U.S. conduct in the Vietnam War as the fulfillment of the logic springing from ancient Rome, America’s Shadow calls on us to confront our past, our "truths," and the imperialistic violence latent in our inherited frame of reference. It urges us to discover the positive critical and political possibilities that lie in an examination of the contradictions that haunt the language of Western thought. William V. Spanos is professor of English and comparative literature at Binghamton University. He is the founding editor of boundary 2 and his many books include The End of Education (1993) and Heidegger and Criticism (1993), both published by the University of Minnesota Press.

Susan Ware - It's One O'Clock and Here Is Mary Mar garet McBride, A Radio Biography(2005).jpg

"This discerning biography of radio pioneer Mary Margaret McBride illuminates an entire cultural era and offers fascinating parallels to our own time. In Susan Ware's engaging narrative, McBride emerges as an icon of twentieth century popular culture and its romance with what we now describe as 'talk radio.' McBride's story is a tale of power, freedom and connection boldly interpreted by a leading woman's historian."
—Joyce Antler, author of The Journey Home: How Jewish Women Shaped Modern America
"Well written and lively, Susan Ware's biography rightly restores McBride to her proper place in broadcasting history."
—Susan Douglas, author of Listening In: Radio and the American Imagination
One of the most beloved radio show hosts of the 1940s and 1950s, Mary Margaret McBride (1899–1976) regularly attracted between six and eight million listeners to her daily one o'clock broadcast. During her twenty years on the air she interviewed tens of thousands of people, from President Harry Truman and Frank Lloyd Wright to Rachel Carson and Zora Neale Hurston. This is her story.
Five decades after their broadcast, her shows remain remarkably fresh and interesting. And yet McBride—the Oprah Winfrey of her day—has been practically forgotten, both in radio history and in the history of twentieth-century popular culture, primarily because she was a woman and because she was on daytime radio.
Susan Ware explains how Mary Margaret McBride was one of the first to exploit the cultural and political importance of talk radio, pioneering the magazine-style format that many talk shows still use. This radio biography recreates the world of daytime radio from the 1930s through the 1950s, confirming the enormous significance of radio to everyday life, especially for women.
In the first in-depth treatment of McBride, Ware starts with a description of how widely McBride was revered in the mid-1940s—the fifteenth anniversary party for her show in 1949 filled Yankee Stadium. Once the readers have gotten to know Mary Margaret (as everyone called her), Ware backtracks to tell the story of McBride's upbringing, her early career, and how she got her start in radio. The latter part of the book picks up McBride's story after World War II and through her death in 1976. An epilogue discusses the contemporary talk show phenomenon with a look back to Mary Margaret McBride's early influence on the format.

Harry Markopolos - No One Would Listen, A True Fin ancial Thriller (2010).jpg

Harry Markopolos and his team of financial sleuths discuss first-hand how they cracked the Madoff Ponzi scheme
No One Would Listen is the exclusive story of the Harry Markopolos-lead investigation into Bernie Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. While a lot has been written about Madoff's scam, few actually know how Markopolos and his team-affectionately called "The Fox Hounds" by Markopolos himself, uncovered what Madoff was doing years before this financial disaster reached its pinnacle. Unfortunately, no one listened, until the damage of the world's largest financial fraud ever was irreversible.
Since that time, Markopolos openly has testified and questioned the enforcement and fraud investigation capabilities of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), shared a sliver of this page-turning story with 60 Minutes, and become perhaps the world's most visible and insightful whistleblower on fraud and conflicts of interest in financial markets.
Throughout the book, Markopolos and his Fox Hounds tell their first-hand story of investigating Madoff-with the help of bestselling author David Fisher. They explain how they discovered the fraud, and then how they provided credible and detailed evidence to major newspapers and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) many times between 2000 and 2008, only to have his warnings ignored repeatedly by the SEC.
Provides a firsthand account of how Markopolos uncovered Madoff's scam years before it actually fell apart
Discusses how the SEC missed the red flags raised by Markopolos
Describes how Madoff was enabled by investors and fiduciaries alike
The only book to tell the story of Madoff's scam and the SEC's failings by those who saw both first hand
Despite repeated written and verbal warnings to the SEC by Harry Markopolos, Bernie Madoff was allowed to continue his operations. No One Would Listen paints a vivid portrait of Markopolos and his determined team of financial sleuths, and what impact they will have on financial markets and financial regulation for decades to come.
