The Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers includes both academic and non-academic philosophers, and a large number of female and minority thinkers whose work has been neglected. It includes those intellectuals involved in the development of psychology, pedagogy, sociology, anthropology, education, theology, political science, and several other fields, before these disciplines came to be considered distinct from philosophy in the late nineteenth century. Each entry contains a short biography of the writer, an exposition and analysis of his or her doctrines and ideas, a bibliography of writings, and suggestions for further reading. While all the major post-Civil War philosophers are present, the most valuable feature of this dictionary is its coverage of a huge range of less well-known writers, including hundreds of presently obscure thinkers. In many cases, the Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers offers the first scholarly treatment of the life and work.

William Kleinknecht - The Man Who Sold the World, Ronald Reagan and the Betrayal of Main Street Amer ica (2009).jpg

USA Books - William Kleinknecht - The Man Who Sold the World, Rona...d Reagan and the Betrayal of Main Street America 2009.jpg

Since Ronald Reagan left office—and particularly after his death—his shadow has loomed large over American politics: Republicans and many Democrats have waxed nostalgic, extolling the Republican tradition he embodied, the optimism he espoused, and his abilities as a communicator.
This carefully calibrated image is complete fiction, argues award-winning journalist William Kleinknecht. The Reagan presidency was epoch shattering, but not—as his propagandists would have it—because it invigorated private enterprise or made America feel strong again. His real legacy was the dismantling of an eight-decade period of reform in which working people were given an unprecedented sway over our politics, our economy, and our culture. Reagan halted this almost overnight.
In the tradition of Thomas Frank’s What’s the Matter with Kansas?, Kleinknecht explores middle America—starting with Reagan’s hometown of Dixon, Illinois—and shows that as the Reagan legend grows, his true legacy continues to decimate middle America.

Kevin Courrier - Randy Newman, American Dreams (20 05).jpg

In addition to covering the life, music, and philosophy of Randy Newman, an enigmatic and audacious American composer, this biography looks at why he has been so largely unacknowledged—and misunderstood—by listeners and fans alike. Delving into the reasons for Newman's peripheral status on the cultural landscape, this suggests that, at heart, he has always been a musical outsider, that he has even built his mainstream career on a brilliant disguise. Using the conventions of American pop as a devious strategy, Newman incorporates into his barbed and satirical work the role of the untrustworthy narrator. In his songs, he wickedly enacts character dramas in order to play a variety of dubious roles: a slave trader in "Sail Away," a stalker in "Suzanne," a born-again yuppie in "It's Money That I Love," and an American demagogue in "Political Science." This is an illuminating portrait of an American artist as a masked man, an artful dodger who remains an American music enigma.

Richard Crockatt - The Fifty Years War, The United States and the Soviet Union in World Politics, 19 41 - 1991 (1994).jpg

USA Books - Richard Crockatt - The Fifty Years War, The United Sta... the Soviet Union in World Politics, 1941 - 1991 1994.jpg

For fifty years, relations between the United States and the Soviet Union were the deciding factor in international affairs. War against Germany brought them together in 1941 in an alliance that was decisive in securing Germany's defeat. Victory ultimately drove them apart, giving rise to the continuous, if fluctuating, antagonism that was known as the Cold War. In 1991, following the collapse of communism and the re-drawing of the political map of central Europe, the Soviet Union itself disintegrated and with it the Cold War. Only now is it possible to view these years as a defined period of history. 7L The Fifty Years War is an insightful examination of the complex relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, placing it in its global context. Richard Crockatt breaks new ground in seeking a synthesis of historical narrative and analysis of the global structures within which superpower relations developed. Crockett also looks at the role economics played in this relationship as well as political and military factors. The Fifty Years War is an authoritative and comprehensive history of the Cold War years and the relationship that has dominated world politics in the second half of the twentieth century.

Winifred L. Reed - Responding To Gangs, Evaluation And Research (2003).jpg

"This collection of papers presents a representative selection of NIJ’s portfolio of gang-related research. The genesis was the upsurge in gang crime beginning in the mid-1980s, which prompted NIJ to expand research in this area.
NIJ’s major focus is to generate research-based knowledge that can inform policy and be useful for practitioners. For that reason, the emphasis in this volume is on evaluations. An evaluation may indicate a program works or doesn’t, but in either case the information can be applied by those seeking solutions to similar problems. The evaluation of Boston’s initiative to halt youth gang violence offers hope that focused law enforcement deterrence works. The assessment of the G.R.E.A.T. program demonstrates that schoolbased prevention can have favorable results."

Bert Useem, Anne Morrison Piehl - Prison State, Th e Challenge of Mass Incarceration (2008).jpg

During the past 25 years, the prison population in America shot upward to reach a staggering 1.53 million by 2005. This book takes a broad, critical look at incarceration, the huge social experiment of American society. The authors investigate the causes and consequences of the prison buildup, often challenging previously held notions from scholarly and public discourse. By examining such themes as social discontent, safety and security within prisons, and the impact on crime and on the labour market, Piehl and Useem use evidence to address the inevitable larger question, where should incarceration go next for American society, and where is it likely to go?

Carl Pickhardt - Why Good Kids Act Cruel, The Hidd en Truth about the Pre-Teen Years (2010).jpg

This is a question parents eventually face and most start thinking about as their children prepare for high school. But the hard truth is, high school is too late. The pre-teen years are actually when it begins, when the cruelty is even worse, causing more anxiety and stress for children already facing an enormous amount of change in their lives. Early adolescence is a phase of anxiety, of uncertainty, of insecurity. To make matters worse, although all kids are going through the same transformation, none of them share what it is like, each feeling alone, isolated, and unique. The result is that even fantastickids will do and say harmful things. Why Good Kids Act Cruel is the first book to give you an understanding of why cruelty happens during these years and how to help your child through these difficult times

Carole A. Barrett, Harvey J. Markowitz - American Indian Culture, 3 volumes (2004).jpg

This three-volume set combines approximately 12 written articles with 260 essays. Arranged alphabetically by keyword, each of the essays addresses a cultural phenomenon characteristic of the indigenous peoples of North America. Twenty separate essays cover both "Architecture" and "Arts and Crafts" in the ten North American culture areas: the Arctic, California, the Great Basin, the Northeast, the Northwest Coast, the Plains, the Plateau, the Southeast, the Southwest, and the Subarctic. In other entries, students will find everything from brief discussions of the importance of acorns or wild rice to a survey of agriculture; from a history of the atlatl to an essay on weapons in general; from entries on major dance forms (such as the Ghost Dance, the Sun Dance, or the Buffalo Dance) to overviews of religions. Although the emphasis is on the traditional cultural heritage of North American indigenous peoples, modern social trends are surveyed and analyzed as well: such essays cover alcoholism, the impact of disease (both pre-contact and post-contact), education, family life, current demography, gaming, tourism, and urban Indians.

Jeff Wallenfeldt - The American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, People, Politics, and Power ( 2009.jpg

When you think of the American Revolution, you may picture John Hancock signing the Declaration of Independence with a fl ourish. Perhaps you envision the fi ery orations of Samuel Adams or imagine Minutemen fi ring muskets at Redcoats as they practice the form of guerrilla warfare they learned from their Indian neighbours. It can be hard to relate to these 18th-century people, with their powdered perukes, their lofty, ornate language, and what may seem to some as their willingness to fight to the death over the inconvenience of paying some small taxes imposed on them without consent. Indeed, it may seem puzzling that the colonists would choose to separate themselves from a powerful empire that not only came to their defense in the French and Indian War just two decades earlier but was also a ready trading partner for American goods. But the individuals who fought in the American Revolution were not merely quaint fi gures in a book. They were real people who risked death for a vision of what America could be and what kinds of rights free people deserved......................................

Lisa L. Miller - The Perils of Federalism, Race, P overty, and the Politics of Crime Control (2008).jpg

In the past dozen years, a number of American cities plagued by gun violence have tried to enact local laws to stem gun-related crime. Yet policymakers at the state and federal levels have very frequently stymied their efforts. This is not an atypical phenomenon. In fact, for a whole range of pressing social problems, state and federal policymakers ignore the demands of local communities that suffer from such ills the most. Lisa L. Miller asks, how does America's multi-tiered political system shape crime policy in ways that empower the higher levels of government yet demobilize and disempower local communities? After all, crime has a disproportionate impact on poor and minority communities, which typically connect crime and violence to broader social and economic inequities at the local level. As The Perils of Federalism powerfully demonstrates, though, the real control to set policy lies with the state and federal governments, and at these levels single-issue advocates--gun rights groups as well as prison, prosecutorial and law enforcement agencies--are able to shape policy over the heads of the people most affected by the issue.
There is a tragic irony in this. The conventional wisdom that emerged from the Civil Rights era was that the higher levels of government--and the federal level in particular--best served the disadvantaged, while localities were most likely to ignore the social problems resulting from racial and economic inequality. Crime policy, Miller argues, teaches us an opposite lesson: as policy control migrates to higher levels, the priorities of low-income minority communities are ignored, the realities of racial and economic inequality are marginalized, and citizens lose their voices. Taking readers from the streets of Philadelphia to the halls of Congress, she details how and why our system operates in the way that it does. Ultimately, the book not only challenges what we think about the advantages of relying of federal power for sensible and fair solutions to longstanding social problems. It also highlights the deep disconnect between the structure of the American political system and the ideals of democratic accountability.
