The Italian exploitation industry is notorious for taking its cues from the US movies, but that may not have been the case here since there was even a bigger kidnapping problem in Italy (eventually leading to the kidnap and murder of a former prime minister by the notorious Red Brigades). The kidnappers in this movie though are pretty low-rent types, barely connected to the Mafia. Their victim is a very spoiled, but perhaps not especially rich, teenage girl (Rena Neihaus) whose parents seem unable--or perhaps unwilling--to get her back (she hints at an incestuous relationship with her stepfather which might have been explored in the sequel to this "Oedipus Orca"). In this movie the youngest, most handsome kidnapper (Michele Placido) falls for the girl in kind of a reverse Stockholm syndrome, with tragic results for at least one of them. The end of movie, strangely enough, is kind of reminiscent of "Last Tango in Paris" but with nowhere near the dramatic gravitas”…

LIM's feature debut is based on a famous short story by Korean writer Han-gang, and revolves around a sensitive housewife who becomes vegetarian as her relationship with her husband deteriorates, culminating in a liaison with her sister's husband, an artist who paints bodies.

The film drew critical attention at its world premiere at the Pusan International Film Festival last October. Director LIM is currently completing his second feature, titled "Scar". Sundance is to take place January 21- 31, with new festival director John Cooper replacing longtime head, Geoffrey Gilmore.

Although a grim flashback scene involving a pair of unsavoury truck drivers towards the end offers a psychological explanation for Lina's nymphomania, this seems present merely to appease the conventional viewer who requires everything to be nicely spelled out, unable to handle such an abstract and star-focused approach to the art of film. For the remainder of us, this movie is like your favourite painting brought to life.

As a snapshot from an aspiring photographer's life, it's a visually alluring one-woman show. Balancing a lot of clubbing with even more sex and a minimal amount of artsy work, Nadja's life sure is rich in production value. But the plot is flimsy, especially on motivation and coherence. What does Nadja (Henriette Heinze) see in Darius (Golo Euler), a shallow slacker almost ten years her junior? How the hell does she live (and support her mom!) on the odd skater shoot for an off-beat magazine? Ludicrous. But I must admit I enjoyed it anyway. I have a nagging suspicion it's mostly Henriette Heinze's slender dancer's frame, rarely seen with her clothes on, that kept me interested. But then, skinny girls getting their kit off have always been a staple asset of the movie business. Go see it if you had the hots for Elodie Bouchez in Yolande Zauberman's "Clubbed to Death" or Mareike Fell in "Over in the Rainbow".
