In No Apology, Mitt Romney asserts that American strength is essential—not just for our own well-being, but for the world’s. Nations such as China and a resurgent Russia threaten to overtake us on many fronts, and violent Islamism continues its dangerous rise. In the face of such challenges, America need not apologize for its liberties, but must use them wisely.
We need renewal: fresh ideas to cut through complicated problems and restore our strength. Creative and bold, Romney proposes solutions to restore economic vitality, create good jobs, reduce out-of-control spending on entitlements and health care, dramatically improve education, and rebuild a military battered by years of war. Most important, he calls for a new commitment to citizenship, a common cause we all share, rather than a laundry list of individual demands. Many of his solutions oppose President Obama’s policies, many also run counter to Republican thinking, but all have one strategic aim: to strengthen America and preserve our global leadership.
Personal and dynamically argued, No Apology is a call to action by a man who cares deeply about America’s history, its promise, and its future.

Sven Steinmo - The Evolution of Modern States, Swe den, Japan, and the United States (2010).jpg

The Evolution of Modern States is a significant contribution to the literatures on political economy, globalization, historical institutionalism, and social science methodology. The book begins with a simple question: Why do rich capitalist democracies respond so differently to the common pressures they face in the early twenty-first century? Drawing on insights from evolutionary theory, Sven Steinmo challenges the common equilibrium view of politics and economics and argues that modern political economies are best understood as complex adaptive systems. The book examines the political, social, and economic history of three different nations - Sweden, Japan, and the United States - and explains how and why these countries have evolved along such different trajectories over the past century. Bringing together social and economic history, institutionalism, and evolutionary theory, Steinmo thus provides a comprehensive explanation for differing responses to globalization as well as a new way of analyzing institutional and social change.

Osprey - Alejandro de Quesada - Fortress 94 - Span ish Colonial Fortifications in North America 1565- 1822 (2010).jpg

USA Books1 - Osprey - Alejandro de Quesada - Fortress 94 - Spanish...lonial Fortifications in North America 1565-1822 2010.jpg

To maintain its imperial power in America, Spain built fortifications across the width of the continent. These outposts were established along Spanish borders from the late sixteenth century onwards to defend its interests against rival European powers and to suppress uprisings of the Native Americans and local population. By the eighteenth century, Spain's defenses spread from the northern area of the Gulf of Mexico through to California. Some of these imperial fortifications, such as the Alamo, played key roles in conflicts including the American Revolution and the Texan War of Independence. This book provides a cogent analysis of Spain's defensive network at the height of the country's imperial strength on the American continent.

George C. Herring - From Colony to Superpower, U.S . Foreign Relations Since 1776 (2009).jpg

The Oxford History of the United States is the most respected multi-volume history of our nation in print. The series includes three Pulitzer Prize-winners, a New York Times bestseller, and winners of prestigious Bancroft and Parkman Prizes. From Colony to Superpower is the only thematic volume commissioned for the series. Here George C. Herring uses foreign relations as the lens through which to tell the story of America's dramatic rise from thirteen disparate colonies huddled along the Atlantic coast to the world's greatest superpower.
A sweeping account of United States' foreign relations and diplomacy, this magisterial volume documents America's interaction with other peoples and nations of the world. Herring tells a story of stunning successes and sometimes tragic failures, captured in a fast-paced narrative that illuminates the central importance of foreign relations to the existence and survival of the nation, and highlights its ongoing impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. He shows how policymakers defined American interests broadly to include territorial expansion, access to growing markets, and the spread of an "American way" of life. And Herring does all this in a story rich in human drama and filled with epic events. Statesmen such as Benjamin Franklin and Woodrow Wilson and Harry Truman and Dean Acheson played key roles in America's rise to world power. But America's expansion as a nation also owes much to the adventurers and explorers, the sea captains, merchants and captains of industry, the missionaries and diplomats, who discovered or charted new lands, developed new avenues of commerce, and established and defended the nation's interests in foreign lands.
From the American Revolution to the fifty-year struggle with communism and conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, From Colony to Superpower tells the dramatic story of America's emergence as superpower--its birth in revolution, its troubled present, and its uncertain future.

Bill Clinton - My Life (2004).jpg

Early on the morning of August 19, 1946, I was born under a clear sky after a violent summer storm to a widowed mother in the Julia Chester Hospital in Hope, a town of about six thousand in southwest Arkansas, thirty-three miles east of the Texas border at Texarkana. My mother named me William Jefferson Blythe III after my father, William Jefferson Blythe Jr., one of nine children of a poor farmer in Sherman, Texas, who died when my father was seventeen. According to his sisters, my father always tried to take care of them, and he grew up tobe a handsome, hardworking, fun-loving man. He met my mother at Tri-State Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1943, when she was training to be a nurse. Many times when I was growing up, I asked Mother to tell me the story of their meeting, courting, and marriage. He brought a date with some kind of medical emergency into the ward where she was working, and they talked and flirted while the other woman was being treated. On his way out of the hospital, he touched the finger on which she was wearing her boyfriend's ring and asked her if she was married. She stammeered no, she was single. The next day he sent the other woman flowers and her heart sank. Then he called Mother for a date, explaining that he always sent flowers when he ended a relationship.

Noam Chomsky - The Culture of Terrorism (1999).jpg

Chomsky, linguist and political essayist, continues his critique of President Reagan's Central American policy begun in Turning the Tide ( LJ 4/1/86), in which he argued that the United States has opposed human rights and democratization in the region to advance our economic interests. Here the thesis is extended to the Iran-contra scandal. Chomsky's documentation neatly supports his logic. Leftist adherents will applaud, while the majoritydepicted as perpetrators or dupes of military-based state capitalismwill ignore the book or dismiss it as rhetoric. But Chomsky has a point of view not frequently encountered in the press. For larger public and academic libraries.

Robert Slater - Soros.Unauthorized.Biography, the Life, Times and Trading Secrets of the World's Gre atest Investor (1997).jpg

USA Books1 - Robert Slater - Soros.Unauthorized.Biography, the Life... Trading Secrets of the Worlds Greatest Investor 1997.jpg

This interesting, readable, unauthorized biography of George Soros traces the life of a successful money manager across two continents. A blue-eyed, blond boy who enjoyed playing a Hungarian version of Monopoly in Budapest soon was delivering deportation notices to other Hungarian Jews after the Jewish Council of Budapest recruited children for that task. After WWII, Soros waited tables in London before enrolling in the London School of Economics. He came to New York in 1956 armed with a competitive edge?a knowledge of the European financial markets. This insight and his ability to discern long-term trends enabled him to become a successful investor and later successfully manage the Quantum Fund, according to Slater, a reporter for Time magazine. The life and times of George Soros are indeed interesting, but the "trading secrets" of the title are based more on his intuition than on objective evidence. An example: when choosing stocks in an industry, pick two?the best and the worst. The reader is left without further guidance in applying this rule (e.g., what is the worst software company?). Read this biography to learn about the interesting life of a successful financial manager rather than specific steps on how you too can successfully manage money. 25,000 first printing.

Stephen Armstrong - 5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations, U.S. History (2003).jpg

An exciting new series of study guides that lets each student design a course of study pitched to his or her individual needs and learning style
Each year, more than one million U.S. high school students take one or more advanced placement (AP) exams, and, according to official projections, that number will continue to rise in the years ahead. That is because AP exams confer important benefits on those who do well on them. High AP scores are indispensable to gaining admission to most elite colleges. They provide students with a competitive edge when competing for grants and scholarships. And they allow students to bypass required university survey courses, saving on skyrocketing tuition fees.

Designed to coincide perfectly with the most current
AP exams, Five Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations guides contain several advanced features that set them above all competitors. Each guide is structured around an ingenious Five-Step Plan. The first step is to develop a study plan, the second builds knowledge, the third and fourth hone test-taking skills and strategies, and the fifth fosters the confidence students need to ace the tests. This flexible study tool is also tailored to three types of students. For the more structured student there is a "Month-by-Month" approach that follows the school year and a "Calendar Countdown" approach that begins with the new year. For students who leave studying to the last minute "Basic Training" covers the basics in just four weeks.

Other outstanding features include:

* Sample tests that closely simulate real exams
* Review material based on the contents of the most recent tests
* Icons highlighting important facts, vocabulary, and frequently-asked questions
* Boxed quotes offering advice from students who have aced the exams and from AP teachers and college professors
* Websites and links to valuable online test resources, along with author e-mail addresses for students with follow-up questions
* Authors who are either AP course instructors or exam developers

Daniel Marston, Carter Malkasian - Counterinsurgen cy in Modern Warfare (2008).jpg

Through history armies of occupation and civil power have been repeatedly faced with the challenges of insurgency. US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan has highlighted this form of conflict in the modern world. Armies, sometimes reluctantly, have had to adopt new doctrines and tactics to deal with the problems of insurgency and diverse counterinsurgency strategies have been developed. These have ranged from conventional military operations to a combination of military and political strategy including propaganda, Psy-Ops, and other approaches.

In Counterinsurgency in Modern Warfare 13 contributors examine developments in counterinsurgency from the early 20th century to the present. Each author, an expert in his field, discusses in depth the conduct and outcomes of operations across the globe, including the Arab-Israeli conflict, Afghanistan and Iraq, and draws out the lessons to be learned from them.

This book is a timely, serious yet accessible survey of a critical facet of modern warfare and present-day global conflict.

Dick Golembiewski - Milwaukee Television History, The Analog Years (2008).jpg

Milwaukee -not New York, Chicago or Los Angeles - was the scene of a number of television firsts: Here the very first application for a commercial TV license was filed with the FCC in 1938. The first female program director and news director in a major market were both at Milwaukee stations. Milwaukee was a major battleground in the VHF vs. UHF war that began in the 1950s.

The struggle to put an educational TV station on the air was fought at the national, state and local levels by the Milwaukee Vocational School. WMVS-TV was the first educational TV station to run a regular schedule of colorcasts, and WMVT was the site of the first long-distance test of a digital over-the-air signal.

This detailed story of the rich history of the citys
television stations since 1930 is told through facts, anecdotes, and quotations from the on-air talent, engineers, and managers who conceived, constructed, and put the stations on the air. Included are discussions of the many locally-produced shows often done live that once made up a large part of a station s broadcast day. Through these stories, some told here for the first time, and the books extensive photographic collection of over 470 images, the history of Milwaukee television comes alive again for the reader.

Steven Weber - The End of Arrogance, America in th e Global Competition of Ideas (2010).jpg

In this concise book, Weber, a professor at Berkeley, and Jentleson, a professor at Duke, identify "five big ideas" that dominated international politics in the 20th century: peace is better than war; benign hegemony is better than a balance of power; capitalism is better than socialism; democracy is better than dictatorship; and western culture is superior to other cultures. The authors argue that for much of the world a repressive government that achieves economic progress (as is the case in Singapore, for instance) is preferable to a democratic government that fails to improve living standards; this shift, the authors argue, needs to be understood by the American people in order for the U.S. to successfully transition from lone superpower to savvy and influential player. Though their message is far from new, it's extremely well articulated. Yet finding an audience for this book may be a challenge; it's too simplistic for foreign policy wonks and too sophisticated to find a home on Main Street.
