In recent years the Marshall Plan has been invoked on numerous occasions as a solution for problems domestic and foreign. This study aims to establish the relevance for contemporary postwar reconstruction programs of an experimental foreign policy conceived and executed back in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The monograph clarifies why and how the program was adopted, what its essential features were, and why it succeeded in Western Europe, concluding that it had important and mutually reinforcing aspectspolitical, psychological, and economic. Fear of Communist expansion westward and the resulting containment doctrine energized its American proponents and European recipients. Its principal architects were realists, motivated by enlightened self-interest. The strengths, weaknesses, and one major myth of their realism are analyzed. Features of great solidity and current relevance include the Economic Cooperation Administrations partnership with Congress and the American people; a multilateral, regional approach that treated Western Europe as a unit; an insistence on European self-help and mutual aid; restriction of the ECAs role to a catalytic agent rather than a driving force; imposition of the highest standards for recruitment and hiring; creation of ECA as a small, autonomous, and unbureaucratic agency; popularization of economic growth as a national priority; freedom from corruption and scandal; and an understanding of the requirements of world leadership. Further examples are provided throughout the text. Some weaknesses discovered were abuses of quantification and language, interagency feuding, and, most importantly, oversimplification of the root causes of Communist popularity in parts of Western Europe.

Thomas Biolsi - Companion to the Anthropology of A merican Indians (2004).jpg

The status of American Indians has long been rooted in a view of Indians as members of indigenous polities with distinct cultures. Often, these cultures have been characterized by dominant colonial authorities as "savage " or "primitive, " and it is the discipline of anthropology that, willingly and wittingly, or not, helped to make the idea of "the primitive " into a social reality. Consequently, the "tribal slot " inhabited by American Indians -with both its benefits and its oppressions -is difficult to imagine without the discipline of anthropology.A Companion to the Anthropology of American Indians contains 27 original contributions by leading scholars who work actively as researchers in American Indian communities, or on the topic of American Indians. The book summarizes the state of anthropological knowledge of Indian peoples, as well as the history that got us to this point.Treated here is the full range of American Indian anthropology: from ecological and political-economic questions to topics concerning religion, language, and expressive culture. Each chapter provides definitive coverage of its topic while situating ethnographic and ethnohistorical data in a broader framework. This framework includes the linked histories of American Indians and anthropology, the role of continued native resistance in changing both the situation of Indian people and the content of anthropology, and the potential role of anthropology in an anti-colonial project that speaks to the pressing concerns of contemporary Indians.

Gary Allen - None Dare Call It Conspiracy (1971).jpg

This is one of those books that have people polarized. Anyone who attempts to balance this with three stars will get from both sides.
The first paragraph of the introduction lets you know what you are in for:
The story you are about to read is true. The names have not been changed to protect the guilty. This book may have the effect of changing your life. After reading this book you will never look at national and world events in the same way again.
I pretty much keep up with events and try to make connections. However I leave it up to the authors (Gary Allen with Larry Abraham) to make their point.
This book has eight chapters:
One...Don't Confuse me with the Facts
Two...Socialism---Royal Road to Power For The Super-Rich
Three... The Money Manipulators
Four...Bankrolling The Bolshevik Revolution
Five...Establishing The Establishment
Six...The Rockefellers And the Reds
Seven...Pressure From Above and Pressure From Below
Eight...You Are the answer.
If this book was written today I doubt if a word would be changed. But what a field day there would be with new additions.

Gary Allen - Kissinger, The Secret Side of the Sec retary of State (1976).jpg

Gary Allen (1936 – 29 November 1986) was an American conservative journalist.

As a student, he was majoring in history at Stanford University and studied at California State University, Long Beach. Gary Allen was a prominent member of the John Birch Society, of which he was a spokesman. He contributed to magazines such as Conservative Digest and American Opinion since 1964. He also was the speech writer for George Wallace during the Alabama Governor Presidential campaigns and was adviser to the conservative Texas millionaire Nelson Bunker Hunt.

In 1972, Gary Allen wrote with Larry Abraham a famous book None Dare Call It Conspiracy (prefaced by John G. Schmitz), which was a best seller (said to have sold over five million copies worldwide) during the United States presidential election. An investigator of US financial, industrial, and political elites, he wrote other books about the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission, claiming that that the term “New World Order” was used by a secretive elite dedicated to the destruction of all national sovereignties.

He died in 1986, at the age of 50, while publishing Say "No!" to the new world order.

Bill Grantham - Creation Myths and Legends of the Creek Indians (2002).jpg

The creation stories, myths, and migration legends of the Creek Indians who once populated southeastern North America are centuries--if not millennia--old. For the first time, an extensive collection of all known versions of these stories has been compiled from the reports of early ethnographers, sociologists, and missionaries, obscure academic journals, travelers' accounts, and from Creek and Yuchi people living today. The Creek Confederacy originated as a political alliance of people from multiple cultural backgrounds, and many of the traditions, rituals, beliefs, and myths of the culturally differing social groups became communal property. Bill Grantham explores the unique mythological and religious contributions of each subgroup to the social entity that historically became known as the Creek Indians. Within each topical chapter, the stories are organized by language group following Swanton's classification of southeastern tribes: Uchean (Yuchi), Hitchiti, Alabama, Muskogee, and Choctaw—a format that allows the reader to compare the myths and legends and to retrieve information from them easily. A final chapter on contemporary Creek myths and legends includes previously unpublished modern versions. A glossary and phonetic guide to the pronunciation of native words and a historical and biographical account of the collectors of the stories and their sources are provided.

George Pitcher - he Death of Spin (2003).jpg

Every decade has its own identity, key values and needs. The 1990s were the age of spin, when the materialism of the 1980s, the desire for instant communication and soundbite democracy came together in the spin culture. This spread throughout society from business and politics even to charities and the church. Somewhere in these polished communications the message was lost. In this fascinating and highly readable work George Pitcher tells the story of the rise and fall of the spin culture, predicting its final death in the early years of the twenty first century. He examines methods of communication as a reflection of and within the context of the values of society and the process of democracy, before drawing on his considerable experience both as the giver and receiver of spin, to examine how we can move beyond the age of spin.
* A zeitgeist work that captures the quest for meaning in the current age and a desire to progress beyond the heady days of spin culture.
* Charts the history and rationale of spin throughout society from the early days of Margaret Thatcher to the death of spin in the hands of the masters of the spin culture.
* Interspersed with the author's own diary entries as a journalist covering major events of the past twenty years
* Discusses methods of communication, how they reflect the values of the age and the relationship between business and politics
* Discusses the way ahead: how politicians, businesses and institutions can communicate with the general population in the post spin age.
* Author offers a unique perspective with insights both as the giver and receiver of spin.

John Dickie - Cosa Nostra, A History of the Sicili an Mafia (2005).jpg

Hailed in Italy as the best book ever written about the mafia in any language, Cosa Nostra is a fascinating, violent, and darkly comic account that reads like fiction and takes us deep into the inner sanctum of this secret society where few have dared to tread. In this gripping history of the Sicilian mafia, John Dickie uses startling new research to reveal the inner workings of this secret society with a murderous record. He explains how the mafia began, how it responds to threats and challenges, and introduces us to the real-life characters that inspired the American imagination for generations, making the mafia an international, larger than life cultural phenomenon. Dickie's dazzling cast of characters includes Antonio Giammona, the first "boss of bosses'; New York cop Joe Petrosino, who underestimated the Sicilian mafia and paid for it with his life; and Bernard "the Tractor" Provenzano, the current boss of bosses who has been hiding in Sicily since 1963.

Mitsuo Fuchida - Midway, The Battle That Doomed Ja pan (1982).jpg

The great air and sea battle of World War II, as seen through Japanese eyes. For the Japanese, confident over the easy victory at Pearl Harbor, the Midway operation had one objective?to draw out the U.S. Navy and destroy it. Thus, on June 4, 1942, Admiral Yamamoto launched his attack on the base at Midway Island with the largest fleet yet assembled in the Pacific, including 350 ships and more than 100,000 officers and men. It was a plan for victory . . . that ended in monumental defeat. Only after this crushing loss did the Japanese ask themselves: What should we have done that we did not do? Why did we fail? Now, for the first time, officers from the Japanese Imperial Navy open the sealed archives to tell the authoritative, dramatic story of what really happened at the historic Battle of Midway.

Stanley Johnston - Queen of the flat-tops, The U.S .S. Lexington and the Coral Sea battle (1979).jpg

This story was written back in 1942, so it is rather dated as far as WWII history is concerned. The U.S.S. Lexington was a battle cruiser converted to an aircraft carrier while still in the shipbuilding process. This famous aircraft carrier was one of the handful the U.S. kept in the Pacific to hold back the Japanese onslaught at the beginning of World War II.
Johnson details the life of the ship prior to her sinking. He interviews the crew and gets the feel for life aboard an aircraft carrier. Since he is writing in 1942, he details the force formation the Lex was sailing with, by saying Cruiser I, or Carrier II. Carrier II is obviously the Yorktown. References to the enemy are in a derogatory and rascist manner, so this sets the book back.
This book gives a good feel to what is was like in 1942. The U.S. was battling for its life, and the enemy were evil. News was censored, so journalists couldn't not report everything. A nice read for a WWII era book.

Frank W. Bates - Pacific Odyssey, History of the U ss Steele During WWII (1998).jpg

This is the exciting story of the events and operations of the USS Steele, DE-8, in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of War from July 1943 to September 1945.
In 1943, as one of the first two Destroyer Escorts in the Southwest Pacific, this ship escorted convoys through submarine-infested waters in the area of the Solomon and Marshall Islands and was one of the first ships into Majuro, Kwajalein, and Eniwetok. In 1944 the USS Steele, DE-8, escorted convoys to Saipan and Guam, and assisted in the raids on Marcus and Wake Islands and the shore bombardment in the Eastern Carolines. The ship participated in the invasion of the Palaus and Leyte. The vessel was engaged in the training of Allied submarines in evasive tactics to thwart Japanese submarine attacks on Allied shipping. The ship and its crew of 186 officers and men sailed 142,439 miles or equal to 5.7 times around the world in the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean in contributing to the defeat of the Japanese in WWII.

James J Fahey - Pacific War Diary, 1942-1945, The Secret Diary of an American Sailor (2003).jpg

Throughout the World War II campaign in the Pacific, an ordinary seaman defied navy regulations by surreptitiously compiling a diary on scraps of paper. One of the most extraordinary personal documents to emerge from the war, James J. Fahey's diary presents a vivid picture of an average sailor's daily life -- from the first battle to the typhoons and food shortages to the final desperate attacks by kamikaze pilots and Japanese suicide ships.

Susan Butler - My Dear Mr. Stalin, The Complete Co rrespondence of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph V . Stalin (2006).jpg

USA Books1 - Susan Butler - My Dear Mr. Stalin, The Complete Corre...ce of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph V. Stalin 2006.jpg

My Dear Mr. Stalin is the first publication that contains the complete correspondence between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph V. Stalin. This collection of more than three hundred hot-war messages, never before fully available in any language, is an invaluable primary source for understanding the relationship that developed between these two great world leaders during a time of supreme world crisis. The correspondence, secret at the time, begins with a letter Roosevelt wrote to Stalin offering aid to the Soviet Union following Hitler’s surprise attack in 1941. It ends with a message that was an attempt to minimize the differences between the two leaders, approved by Roosevelt only minutes before his death in 1945. The book traces the evolution of their unique relationship, revealing the statesmanship of the two men and their thinking about the grave events of their time. An informative introduction to the volume and generous annotations set the letters in context.

Gregory D. Squires - Why the Poor Pay More, How to Stop Predatory Lending (2004).jpg

The proverbial American dream of owning a home has become an all-too-real nightmare for a growing number of families. The most vulnerable segments of our society--including minorities, the elderly, and working families--are being victimized by financiers who lure them into commitments they cannot fulfill. Collectively known as "predatory lending," these practices include offering higher interest rates than can be justified by the risk, high pre-payment penalties that lock families into exploitative loans, and monstrous balloon payments that often result in default and the loss of the home. The net result can be disastrous: damage to one's credit rating, bankruptcy, and even the loss of lifelong savings. Why the Poor Pay More is an incisive exposure of these practices: how they have evolved, why they have become so prevalent in recent years, and how their negative effects can be quantified. It features in-depth analysis from prominent scholars, legal experts, and community leaders, who shed new light on the social, political, and economic consequences of predatory lending. Why the Poor Pay More is much more than an indictment of these insidious discriminatory practices. It is a call to arms for anyone concerned about how the financial-political system can be corrupted to serve the needs of the wealthy. Highlighting community initiatives already underway to combat predatory lending and an extensive listing of practical resources, Why the Poor Pay More outlines active roles that individuals, advocacy groups, financial and legal service providers, and policymakers can play in reversing this destructive trend.
