L. V. Scott - Exploring Intelligence Archives, Enq uires into the Secret State (2008).jpg

If deception, deceit and manipulation are integral to the business of intelligence gathering - what are the implications for the historical record? Are intelligence archives themselves officially constructed to allow only manipulated histories? This new book examines these questions and explores how various kinds of people involved in studying and/or practicing intelligence, view texts and issues from different perspectives. It shows how scholars have long sought to make use of relevant archives, but constraints on access to such sources have been considerable. With the end of the Cold War and other changes in official attitudes, more intelligence documents are now becoming available. This is a fascinating new examination that shows how no document speaks entirely for itself, though some may be more eloquent or assertive than others. The interpretation of the archival record (as indeed the non-archival record) is at the heart of scholarship, and challenges in interpreting textsare generic problems for any researcher.

Marilyn Mayer Culpepper - Never Will We Forget, Or al Histories of World War II (2006).jpg

Never Will We Forget deals with the most enduring and moving side of World War II--the personal side. These are the stories of some 400 men and women, who, though they experienced the war in wildly different ways, were all profoundly affected by it. Gleaned from interviews and oral histories, the book reflects the experiences of male and female veterans, civilians on the home front, conscientious objectors, survivors of the torpedoing of the USS Indianapolis and of typhoons, participants in the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Some stories tug at the heart, some foster the shock of surprise, still others reflect the long-held pride in the American war effort at home and abroad. From the first dark stirrings of war through its dusty aftermath, Never Will We Forget captures how Americans lived, felt, and believed during the twentieth-century's most brutal conflict.

Mariana L. R. Dantas - Black Townsmen, Urban Slave ry and Freedom in the Eighteenth-Century Americas (2008).jpg

USA Books1 - Mariana L. R. Dantas - Black Townsmen, Urban Slavery a...y and Freedom in the Eighteenth-Century Americas 2008.jpg

This book is an innovative comparative study of persons of African origin and descent in two urban environments of the early modern Atlantic world. The author follows these men and women as they struggle with slavery, negotiations of manumission, and efforts to adapt to a life in freedom, ultimately illustrating how their choices and actions placed them at the foreground of the development ofAtlantic urban slavery and emancipation. In 1755, the “faithful vassals of his majesty, the Crioulo, Preto and Pardo men and women” of the towns of Minas Gerais, in Brazil, presented a petition to the Portuguese king requesting the nomination of a public official who would serve as their legal representative in local courts. They argued that it was “public knowledge that from the beginning of settlement in Minas Gerais Crioulos, Pretos and Pardos had traded in every type of product and had engaged in business with all kinds of white people.” Nevertheless, because “of their inability to read or write and their ignorance of the law,” they constantly suffered abuses at the hands of white residents in the region whenever a commercial, personal, or property dispute arose between them. They further explained that they were often subjected to disadvantageous terms in their commercial and other dealings with white people; they were unjustly arrested for debt; and their wives and daughters frequently suffered from sexual abuses perpetrated by their white creditors. Not being able to secure fair representation and fair trials, they sustained significant loss to their estates, households, and honor. To remedy this situation, the petitioners sought the appointment of a public defender or legal agent. More specifically, they requested that he be chosen from among the many crioulo or pardo male residents of Minas Gerais, someone well-versed in Portuguese law, but who was also familiar with the problems they, as a group, faced in the region

Edward Alwood - Dark Days in the Newsroom, McCarth yism Aimed at the Press (2007).jpg

Dark Days in the Newsroom traces how journalists became radicalized during the Depression era, only to become targets of Senator Joseph McCarthy and like-minded anti-Communist crusaders during the 1950s. Edward Alwood, a former news correspondent, describes this remarkable story of conflict, principle, and personal sacrifice with noticeable élan. He shows how McCarthy's minions pried inside newsrooms thought to be sacrosanct under the First Amendment, and details how some journalists mounted a heroic defense of freedom of the press while others secretly enlisted in the government's anti-communist crusade. Relying on previously undisclosed documents from FBI files along with personal interviews, Alwood provides a richly informed commentary on one of the most significant moments in the history of American journalism. Arguing that the experiences of the McCarthy years profoundly influenced the practice of journalism, he shows how many of the issues faced by journalists in the 1950s prefigure today's conflicts over the right of journalists to protect their sources.

Christine M. Du Bois, Sidney W. Mintz - Images of West Indian Immigrants in Mass Media (2004).jpg

Du Bois explores mass media’s unflattering images of "black" Caribbean immigrants. Drawing on the extended case study in the Chesapeake region, she highlights media ethics in relation to minorities. Analyses of journalism, advertisements, TV, and film reveal ways these immigrants were unfairly depicted during the 1980s and 1990s and how relationships among law enforcers, journalists, criminals, and Hollywood writers shaped media representations. Du Bois also details the West Indians’ response. She places their concerns in the context of an America where dark-skinned immigrants can be subjected to racism and xenophobia, particularly when members of their community commit crimes. Her findings are relevant to the current struggle to balance journalism about terrorists with a desire to treat all Americans fairly.

Craig Centrie - Identity Formation of Vietnamese I mmigrant Youth in an American High School (2004).jpg

Centrie studies the identity formation of 20 Vietnamese high school students. Vietnamese students have a strong pro-school identity that arises from their immigrant or refugee experiences. The Vietnamese thus become model minorities in the eyes of therir teachers. Vietnamese male students stressed that their perception of freedom was closely linked to going to school and college. They also reported abuse by American students. Vietnamese female identity also centered on their refugee or immigrant experiences. Women, however, were less likely than men to have clear plans for the future, created an ideology of romance around Vietnamese males, and struggled to balance traditional female roles with American ideas gender equality. Vietnamese families and community also contribute to the student’s pro-school identity by strictly enforcing Vietnamese cultural attitudes.

Julie Keown-Bomar - Kinship Networks Among Hmong-A merican Refugees (2004).jpg

Keown-Bomar explores the ways Hmong-Americans use their understandings of kinship and family to cope with personal and social disruptions caused by war, refugee flight, and relocation. She interprets these human relationships with a strong sense of realism, chronicling the strengths of Hmong kin networks and familism, as well as the tensions about gender and generational status. Her work demonstrates that maintenance of cultural values and practices can serve as a means to promote cultural and human survival in tumultuous times. Drawing from what Hmong refugees shared about their own adaptation experiences, Keown-Bomar provides a practical list of suggestions for building culturally responsive social services for refugees and immigrants.

Peter N. Amponsah - Libel Law, Political Criticism , and Defamation of Public Figures (2004).jpg

Amponsah studies political defamation laws in the United States, the European Court of Human Rights, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Prevailing jurisprudence of each area weighs political speech against reputation through a preferred balancing approach which gives more protection to political speech. While the different jurisdictions place greater interest in political speech than individual reputation in matters of public concern and governance, all used multiple rationales such as the marketplace of ideas, self-fulfillment, search for truth, and democratic self-government principles to justify protection of political speech. Democratic jurisdictions give heightened protection for political speech by assimilating into their libel laws values embodied in multiple rationales for protecting political speech.

Laura MacDonald, Arne Ruckert - Post-Neoliberalism in the Americas (2009).jpg

Product Description Dramatic changes have occurred in recent years in countries throughout the Americas. Neoliberal policy prescriptions promoted by international financial agencies have failed to deliver significant growth, and have led to rising levels of poverty and inequality. This collection brings together a diverse range of analyses to interrogate these changes occurring in the Americas, from Canada to Venezuela to Chile. Authors debate the reasons for the election of a large number of New Left governments in Latin America, and discuss the significance of the policies they have adopted. Do these policies represent a radical shift in direction towards a post-neoliberal era, or only a kinder and gentler form of neoliberalism? How do New Left governments differ from each other? At the same time, some governments in the Americas, particularly in North America, continue to cling to neoliberal policy prescriptions despite their problems. However, authors in this collection argue that transformations have occurred even in these neo-liberal holdouts. The book offers an essential overview of recent changes in the hemisphere, highlighting both the continuities and discontinuities in neoliberal practice.

Jamws McClellan - Liberty, Order, and Justice (200 0).jpg

This new Liberty Fund edition of James McClellan's classic work on the quest for liberty, order, and justice in England and America includes the author's revisions to the original edition published in 1989 by the Center for Judicial Studies. Unlike most textbooks in American Government, Liberty, Order, and Justice seeks to familiarize the student with the basic principles of the Constitution, and to explain their origin, meaning, and purpose. Particular emphasis is placed on federalism and the separation of powers. These features of the book, together with its extensive and unique historical illustrations, make this new edition of Liberty, Order, and Justice especially suitable for introductory classes in American Government and for high school students in advanced placement courses.

Eriksen-Jenkins - Flag, Nation and Symbolism in Eu rope and America (2007).jpg

Although the symbolic and political importance of flags has often been mentioned by scholars of nationalism, there are few in-depth studies of the significance of flags for national identities. This multi-disciplinary collection offers case studies and comparisons of flag history, uses and controversies. This book brings together a dozen scholars, from varying national and disciplinary backgrounds, to offers a cluster of close readings of flags in their social contexts, mostly contemporary, but also historical. Case studies from Denmark, England, Northern Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and the United States explore ways in which flags are contested, stir up powerful emotions, can be commercialised in some contexts but not in others, serve as quasi-religious symbols, and as physical boundary markers; how the same flag can be solemn and formal in one setting, but stand for domestic bliss and informal cultural intimacy in another.

Charles Capper, Charles Capper, Cristina Giorcelli - Margaret Fuller, Transatlantic Crossings in a R evolutionary Age (2007).jpg

USA Books1 - Charles Capper, Charles Capper, Cristina Giorcelli - ..., Transatlantic Crossings in a Revolutionary Age 2007.jpg

Margaret Fuller (1810–1850), a pioneering gender theorist, transcendentalist, journalist, and literary critic, was one of the most well-known and highly regarded feminist intellectuals of nineteenth-century America. With her contemporaries Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, she was one of the predominant writers of the Transcendentalist movement, and she aligned herself in both her public and private life with the European revolutionary fervor of the 1840s. She traveled to Italy as a foreign correspondent for the New York Tribune to cover the nascent revolutions, pursuing the transnational ideal awakened in her youth by a classical education in European languages and a Romantic curiosity about other cultures, traditions, and identities.
This volume is a collaboration of international scholars who, from varied fields and approaches, assess Fuller’s genius and character. Treating the last several years of Margaret Fuller’s short life, these essays offer a truly international discussion of Fuller’s unique cultural, political, and personal achievements. From the origins and articulations of Fuller’s cosmopolitanism to her examination of “the woman question,” and from her fascination with the European “other” to her candid perception of imperial America from abroad, they ponder what such an extraordinary woman meant to America, and also to Italy and Europe, during her lifetime and continuing to the present.

David Obey - Raising Hell for Justice, The Washing ton Battles of a Heartland Progressive (2007).jpg

David Obey has in his nearly forty years in the U.S. House of Representatives worked to bring economic and social justice to America’s working families. In 2007 he assumed the chair of the Appropriations Committee and is positioned to pursue his priority concerns for affordable health care, education, environmental protection, and a foreign policy consistent with American democratic ideals.
Here, in his autobiography, Obey looks back on his journey in politics beginning with his early years in the Wisconsin Legislature, when Wisconsin moved through eras of shifting balance between Republicans and Democrats. On a national level Obey traces, as few others have done, the dramatic changes in the workings of the U.S. Congress since his first election to the House in 1969. He discusses his own central role in the evolution of Congress and ethics reforms and his view of the recent Bush presidency—crucial chapters in our democracy, of interest to all who observe politics and modern U.S. history.

James P. Leary - Polkabilly (2006).jpg

A freewheeling blend of continental European folk music and the songs, tunes, and dances of Anglo and Celtic immigrants, polkabilly has enthralled American musicians and dancers since the mid-19th century. From West Virginia coal camps and east Texas farms to the Canadian prairies and America's Upper Midwest, scores of groups have wed squeezeboxes with string bands, hoe downs with hambos, and sentimental Southern balladry with comic "up north" broken-English comedy, to create a new and uniquely American sound.
The Goose Island Ramblers played as a house band for a local tavern in Madison, Wisconsin from the early 1960s through the mid-1970s. The group epitomized the polkabilly sound with their wild mixture of Norwegian fiddle tunes, Irish jigs, Slovenian polkas, Swiss yodels, old time hillbilly songs, "Scandihoovian" and "Dutchman" dialect ditties, frost-bitten Hawaiian marches, and novelty numbers on the electric toilet plunger. In this original study, James P. Leary illustrates how the Ramblers' multiethnic music combined both local and popular traditions, and how their eclectic repertoire challenges prevailing definitions of American folk music. He thus offers the first comprehensive examination of the Upper Midwest's folk musical traditions within the larger context of American life and culture.
Impeccably researched, richly detailed and illustrated, and accompanied by a compact disc of interviews and performances, James P. Leary's Polkabilly: How the Goose Island Ramblers Redefined American Folk Music creates an unforgettable portrait of a polkabilly band and its world.
