Since its publication more than a decade ago, A Primer on American Labor Law has served as an easily accessible guide to the development, principles, and characteristics of American labor law.The third edition incorporates a number of significant developments that have taken place since 1986. These include new precedent under the Railway Labor Act (covering both railroads and airlines), the expansion of wrongful discharge litigation (which has become increasingly important as the unorganized sector of the work force continues to expand), new forms of protection against discrimination afforded by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Civil Rights Act of 1991, the consent decree between the U.S. Department of Justice and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the continued success of unions representing professional athlete

Elizabeth A. Stanley - Paths to Peace, Domestic Co alition Shifts, War Termination and the Korean War (2009).jpg

USA Books1 - Elizabeth A. Stanley - Paths to Peace, Domestic Coali...ition Shifts, War Termination and the Korean War 2009.jpg

Paths to Peace begins by developing a theory about the domestic obstacles to making peace and the role played by shifts in states' governing coalitions in overcoming these obstacles. In particular, it explains how the longer the war, the harder it is to end, because domestic obstacles to peace become institutionalized over time. Next, it tests this theory with a mixed methods approach—through historical case studies and quantitative statistical analysis. Finally, it applies the theory to an in-depth analysis of the ending of the Korean War. By analyzing the domestic politics of the war's major combatants—the Soviet Union, the United States, China, and North and South Korea—it explains why the final armistice terms accepted in July 1953 were little different from those proposed at the start of negotiations in July 1951, some 294,000 additional battle-deaths later.

Jacob Neufeld, George M. Watson - Coalition Air Wa rfare in the Korean War 1950-1953 (2005).jpg

In commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Korean War, the official history offices of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force and their respective historical associations collaborated to sponsor as comprehensive a symposium as possible, including as participants some of the coalition partners who contributed forces and weapons to the war.
The intent of this symposium, titled Coalition Air Warfare during the Korean War, 1950 -1953, was to focus not only on the contributions made by the armed forces of the United States, but also on those of America's allies. The diverse group of panelists and speakers included not only scholars with subject matter expertise, but also veteran soldiers, sailors, and airmen who had served in that conflict. It was hoped that the melding of these diverse perspectives would provide interesting, if sometimes conflicting, views about the Korean War.
The symposium organizers designated an agenda of six specific panels for investigation, including Planning and Operations; Air Superiority, Air Support of Ground Forces; Air Interdiction and Bombardment, Air Reconnaissance and Intelligence, and Logistical Support of Air Operations. Each session began with commentary by the panel chairman, which was followed by formal papers, and in some instances included a lively question and answer session.
The papers and most of the proceedings found their way into print and are recorded here in an effort to permanently capture the activities, challenges, contributions, and heroics of the coalition air forces and the airmen who fought during the Korean conflict.

Osprey - Battle Orders 11 - Donald Boose - US Army Forces in the Korean War 1950-53 (2005).jpg

When North Korea attacked the South on June 25, 1950, United States forces in East Asia were under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, whose largest ground force was Eighth US Army. This army fought a tenacious defense of South Korea, counterattacked north to the Yalu River with the separate X Corps, before falling back in the face of massive Chinese intervention, conducted a war of movement, and settled into a bloody two-year long period of static warfare. This title examines the combat mission, organization, and evolution of the Eighth US Army in Korea and its 300,000 US ground forces through highly detailed orders of battle, tables of organization and equipment, and examinations of crucial aspects such as doctrine, training, and tactics.

The Korean War was a significant turning point in the Cold War. This book explains how the conflict in a small peninsula in East Asia had a tremendous impact on the entire international system and the balance of power between the two superpowers, America and Russia. Through the conflict, the West demonstrated its resolve to thwart Communist aggression and the armed forces of China, the Soviet Union and the United States came into direct combat for the only time during the Cold War.

Kevin Hillstrom, Laurie Hillstrom - The Industrial Revolution in America, Automobiles, Mining and Pe troleum, Textiles (2006).jpg

USA Books1 - Kevin Hillstrom, Laurie Hillstrom - The Industrial Rev...ica, Automobiles, Mining and Petroleum, Textiles 2006.jpg

This work covers the emergence of the textile, mining and petroleum, and automobile manufacturing industries and their separate and interconnected roles in the overall Industrial Revolution that transformed the United States and the world. The Industrial Revolution was the wellspring from which the modern United States emerged. But look closer at specific industries and you will see the nation confronting the inevitable side effects of modernization for the first time, among them urbanization and a shift from a farm-based economy (textile manufacturing), labor unrest (mining and petroleum), and pollution and rampant consumerism (the automobile industry). This three-volume set from ABC-CLIO's "The Industrial Revolution in America" series draws on the latest research to tell the stories of the industry that started the United States down the road toward economic revolution (textiles), the industry that represented the revolution's ultimate destination (automobiles), and the industry that fueled the journey by turning the nation's natural resources into sources of wealth and power. How did the mid-19th century "bicycle boom" pave the way for America's car culture? What role did the mining industry play in settling the West? Why did Thomas Jefferson find the rise of textile manufacturing troubling? What roles did other industries play in the phenomenal development of these three - and vice versa? The answers to these and other probing questions lie in this remarkable set.

Walter S. Dunn - People of the American Frontier, The Coming of the American Revolution (2005).jpg

Life on the American frontier in the decades before the Revolution was extremely difficult and uncertain. While the possibility of new territory in the West cleared the way for economic expansion, those who forged into the frontier faced long and arduous struggles. Farmers worked endlessly to clear a few scant acres for production. Traders struggled to reach remote areas to bargain with local tribes. Merchants weighted the possibilities for enormous profit with huge risk. Native Americans faced increasing encroachment upon their traditional lands. Women, slaves, and indentured servants played a greater role in opening the frontier than many sources have indicated. Each of these groups depended on the others in some way, and collectively they formed the patchwork that was life on the frontier. At the same time, the existence of the frontier exerted a dominant influence on the colonial economy. Using a wealth of material from primary sources, Dunn paints a vivid picture of a world caught up in the winds of change, a world poised on the edge of revolution. Using a wealth of material from primary sources, People of the American Frontier paints a vivid picture of life on the American frontier in the fifteen years preceding the Revolution.

Christopher P. Magra - The Fisherman's Cause, Atla ntic Commerce and Maritime Dimensions of the Ameri can Revolution (2009).jpg

USA Books1 - Christopher P. Magra - The Fishermans Cause, Atlantic ...d Maritime Dimensions of the American Revolution 2009.jpg

In the first book-length examination of the connections between the commercial fishing industry in colonial America and the American Revolution, Christopher Magra places the origins and progress of this formative event in a wider Atlantic context. The Fisherman's Cause utilizes extensive research from archives in the United States, Canada, and the U.K. in order to take this Atlantic approach. Dried, salted cod represented the most lucrative export in New England. The fishing industry connected colonial producers to transatlantic markets in the Iberian Peninsula and the West Indies. Parliament's coercive regulation of this branch of colonial maritime commerce contributed to colonists' willingness to engage in a variety of revolutionary activities. Colonists then used the sea to forcibly resist British authority. Fish merchants converted transatlantic trade routes into military supply lines, and they transformed fishing vessels into warships. Fishermen armed and manned the first American navy, served in the first coast guard units, and fought on privateers. These maritime activities helped secure American independence.

Największe bitwy XX wieku 08 - Krzysztof Kubiak - Korea 1950 (1994).jpg

W celu opanowania pozostałej części Korei, Kim Ir Sen potrzebuje pozwolenia J. Stalina, (czyli wsparcia militarnego i ekonomicznego ZSRR w domyśle). Stalin niechętnie przystaje na tę propozycję aczkolwiek „nie można sądzić, iż kierowała nim niechęć ograniczenia ekspansji komunizmu” jak wielokrotnie podkreśla Bajanow .
W styczniu 1950r. Stalin angażuje się we wsparcie Korei Płd. Jednocześnie prowadzi tajne rozmowy z Mao Zedongiem, namawiając go do wzięcia udziału w wojnie.
Wtedy do wojny przystępują wojska tzw. „ochotników chińskich” dowodzonych przez Peng Te – Huaja w sile 40 dywizji.
W wyniku planu użycia broni atomowej przeciw Chinom i Związkowi Radzieckiemu, gen. MacArthur zostaje zdymisjonowany. Zastępuje go gen. M. Ridgway, prowadząc dwuletnie jeszcze walki.

Craig R. Smith - Silencing the Opposition, Governm ent Strategies of Suppression of Freedom of Expres sion (1996).jpg

USA Books1 - Craig R. Smith - Silencing the Opposition, Government...rategies of Suppression of Freedom of Expression 1996.jpg

Examines major challenges to the First Amendment using case studies of the various forms of governmental suppression in U. S. history.

"This book is highly intelligent for those with an interest in the U. S. Constitution and especially the meaning and theory of the First Amendment. It is a very well written, effectively supported book that can contribute significantly to the growing body of literature on freedom of expression." -- John J. Makay, Director, School of Mass Communications, Bowling Green State University

This volume examines major challenges to the First Amendment using illustrative case studies of the various forms of governmental suppression in our history. Essays show that governmental forces have used rhetorical strategies in simple and sophisticated ways to silence opponents.By studying which strategies are effective, how they evolve, and how they are unmasked, we gain a better understanding to combat them in the future.

The case studies include the crisis surrounding the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts, Abraham Lincoln's suspension of Habeas Corpus during the Civil War, the Radical Republican's revenge on he South during reconstruction, the marginalization of Native Americans throughout our history, the suppression of labor unions at the end of the nineteenth century, Senator Joseph McCarthy's allegations that the government had been infiltrated by Communists at the outset of the Cold War, and Lyndon Johnson's and Richard Nixon's strategies for silencing their opponents during the Vietnam War. The editor concludes the study by comparing and contrasting the various cases and the lessons that can be drawn from them.

"This book has a number of especially attractive features. It achieves an understanding of suppression of freedom of expression by the national government of the United States by (1) the selection of seven crucial episodes in American history; (2) the re-telling of these stories with considerable narrative detail; (3) the interpretation of these episodes in suppression of freedom of expression not only in political, legal, and historical terms but also as rhetorical encounters, in which due attention is paid both to the expression that is being suppressed and to the rhetorical means by which that suppression is advocated, and in some cases, overthrown. This rhetorical focus gives the book its special claim to advance our knowledge." -- Thomas W. Benson, Penn State University

Craig R. Smith is Professor and Director of the Center for First Amendment Studies at California State University, Long Beach. He has written several books including To Form a More Perfect Union; First Amendment Rights of Commercial Speakers; Freedom of Expression and Partisan Politics; and The Diversity Principle: Friend or Foe of the First Amendment.
