Now available in two volumes, this accessible encyclopedia features an informative introduction that surveys the history of the short story in the United States, interprets the current literary landscape, and points to new and future trends. A bibliography, list of prize-winners, thematic index, and cross-references complete this invaluable guide.

Ajume H. Wingo - Veil Politics in Liberal Democrat ic States (2003).jpg

Ajume H. Wingo argues that non-rational factors--rhetoric, symbols, and traditions--provide the actual source of motivation in the development and sustainability of the liberal democratic state. Drawing from historical and philosophical sources, Wingo demonstrates that these "veils" can play an essential role in a thriving, stable liberal democratic state.

Alan Freeman, Boris Kagarlitsky - The Politics of Empire, Globalisation in Crisis (2004).jpg

One of neo-liberalism's greatest crimes is to downgrade the history of ideas. This book digs deep into history and, in a timely way, celebrates an intellectual but practical approach to the social, economic and environmental threats posed by globalisation. Ann Pettifor, Senior Associate, New Economics Foundation and Editor, Real World Economic Outlook "A book that isn't afraid to call today's specific 'globalization' process by its proper name – another phase of imperialism! ... Strongly recommended for those wishing to understand the damage that is being wreaked in the name of promoting global prosperity and democracy." Achin VanaikBringing together nine leading writers and activists from around the world, this book explores the origins of a new age of Empire. The contributors show globalisation is the driving force behind the new and warlike period that began with the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. Writers including Walden Bello, Jayati Ghosh, Kate Hudson, Boris Kagarlitsky and Alan Freeman offer a wealth of factual evidence showing that globalisation has driven apart peoples, classes and nations, shaping and reshaping key regions of the world. Challenging the idea that it is inevitable, they argue that its economic contradictions have thrown the world order that sustained it into crisis.Globalisation's opponents are shaping a new intellectual tradition. For the first time, the book brings together the critiques thrown up by resistance to globalisation, to war, and to imperialism. Free from ideology and dogma, the book shows how the peace and anti-globalisation movements can join forces and face the coming period of world history.Essential reading for anyone involved in the peace and anti-globalisation movements, this book is also ideal for students of politics, economics and international relations.

Frank Buchmann-Moller - Someone to Watch Over Me, The Life and Music of Ben Webster (2006).jpg

For a half century, Ben Webster, one of the "big three" of swing tenors-along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young-was one of the best-known and most popular saxophonists.

Early in his career, Webster worked with many of the greatest orchestras of the time, including those led by Willie Bryant, Cab Calloway, Benny Carter, Fletcher Henderson, Andy Kirk, Bennie Moten, and Teddy Wilson. In 1940 Webster became Duke Ellington's first major tenor soloist, and during the next three years he played on many famous recordings, including "Cotton Tail."

Someone to Watch Over Me tells, for the first time, the complete story of Ben Webster's brilliant and troubled career. For this comprehensive study of Webster, author Frank Büchmann-Møller interviewed more than fifty people in the United States and Europe, and he includes numerous translated excerpts from European periodicals and newspapers, none previously available in English. In addition, the author studies every known Webster recording and film, including many private recordings from Webster's home collection not available to the public.

Exhaustively researched, this is a much needed and long overdue study of the life and music of one of jazz's most important artists.

About the Author
Frank Buchman-Moller is head of the jazz archive at Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark. He is the author of You Just Fight for Your Life: The Story of Lester Young and You Got to Be Original, Man!: The Music of Lester Young.

People in the News - Hillary Clinton (2009).jpg

When Hillary Rodham Clinton graduated from Wellesley College in 1969, she was the first student in the school’s long and illustrious history to give the commencement address. It proved to be one of many groundbreaking firsts for the young woman now considered the most famous woman in the world. In part of her speech, she defined what she saw as her generation’s greatest challenge. She said, “The challenge now is to practice politics as the art of making what appears to be impossible, possible.” For the remainder of her life she herself would strive to do exactly that....

As a recently elected senator, Clinton was asked what advice she would give young women considering a life in politics that would extend the fight she started. She said, “My message to young women is that, as tough as the political environment is, if you care about making a difference, you have to be willing to get out there and try. . . . We’ve broken through all of these barriers so that individual women can make the choice that’s right for them.” Having shown her own willingness to get out and try to make a difference, Hillary Clinton has proven that it is indeed possible to overcome the impossible.

Michelle Obama’s slave ancestry is the most dramatic aspect of her family history. U.S. representative James E. Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat, claims that having a descendant of slaves as First Lady is as meaningful historically as her husband’s status as the first black president...

Gary B. Gorton - Slapped by the Invisible Hand, Th e Panic of 2007 (2010).jpg

Originally written for a conference of the Federal Reserve, Gary Gorton's "The Panic of 2007" garnered enormous attention and is considered by many to be the most convincing take on the recent economic meltdown. Now, in Slapped by the Invisible Hand, Gorton builds upon this seminal work, explaining how the securitized-banking system, the nexus of financial markets and instruments unknown to most people, stands at the heart of the financial crisis.
Gorton shows that the Panic of 2007 was not so different from the Panics of 1907 or of 1893, except that, in 2007, most people had never heard of the markets that were involved, didn't know how they worked, or what their purposes were. Terms like subprime mortgage, asset-backed commercial paper conduit, structured investment vehicle, credit derivative, securitization, or repo market were meaningless. In this superb volume, Gorton makes all of this crystal clear. He shows that the securitized banking system is, in fact, a real banking system, allowing institutional investors and firms to make enormous, short-term deposits. But as any banking system, it was vulnerable to a panic. Indeed the events starting in August 2007 can best be understood not as a retail panic involving individuals, but as a wholesale panic involving institutions, where large financial firms "ran" on other financial firms, making the system insolvent.
An authority on banking panics, Gorton is the ideal person to explain the financial calamity of 2007. Indeed, as the crisis unfolded, he was working inside an institution that played a central role in the collapse. Thus, this book presents the unparalleled and invaluable perspective of a top scholar who was also a key insider.

Gerry Mackie - Democracy Defended (2004).jpg

Is there a public good? A prevalent view in political science is that democracy is unavoidably chaotic, arbitrary, meaningless, and impossible. Such scepticism began with Condorcet in the eighteenth century, and continued most notably with Arrow and Riker in the twentieth century. In this powerful book, Gerry Mackie confronts and subdues these long-standing doubts about democratic governance. Problems of cycling, agenda control, strategic voting, and dimensional manipulation are not sufficiently harmful, frequent, or irremediable, he argues, to be of normative concern. Mackie also examines every serious empirical illustration of cycling and instability, including Rikers famous argument that the US Civil War was due to arbitrary dimensional manipulation. Almost every empirical claim is erroneous, and none is normatively troubling, Mackie says. This spirited defence of democratic institutions should prove both provocative and influential.
