Preface

An essay, wrote Dr. Johnson, is "a loose sally of the mind; an irregular undigested piece." Now that is not the sort of definition designed to encourage a modern scholar
to refer to his or her work as an essay. Still, what follows is an essay—but I beg for a newer definition.
"A rank of spotlights" is what Perry Miller once called a collection of his
essays, and that seems good enough for me. Thus, what follows is a tentative, occasionally frankly speculative effort
to shine a spotlight that it is hoped will illuminate some portions of a neglected area of study at the same time that it
may make more comprehensible certain problems that continue to loom large in the modern consciousness. This is a
work designed, then, to open a field of inquiry to questions rather than one claiming to dictate answers. The focus is
on the human concern with death. The Puritans of New England are the people chosen to serve as exemplars of this concern.
Almost a century and a half has now passed since Alexis de Tocqueville began his monumental work on the state of
American civilization by observing: "If we were able to go back to the elements of states and to examine the oldest
monuments of their history, I doubt not that we should discover in them the primal cause of the prejudices, the habits, the ruling passions, and, in short, all that constitutes what is called the national character."(1.) Historians today are generally more skeptical of such
implied determinism than were Tocqueville and his contemporaries, but it may well be that something of an intuitive
sense of agreement with Tocqueville on this matter is at least in part responsible for the fact that America’s Puritans
are today the objects of so much intensive historical study; indeed, considering their limited numbers in the population
of American history, probably no other group of individuals has received as much historical attention in the past few decades.

David Lane - Deceived, Damned, and Defiant (1999).jpg

14 WORD PRESSproudly offers the compiled writings of political prisoner David Lane in this 400 page, soft cover book of profound wisdom and inspiration.
Author of the sacred 14 Words credo, David Lane serves 190 years in prison for resisting the genocide of his race. This unjust incarceration has afforded him the luxury of deep study and on-going research in the fields of race, politics and religion. Mr. Lanes philosophical insights, forged by ardent compassion, are illuminating and dynamically presented in this consummate treatise expounding upon these 14 Words: We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children.

Gary Holthaus - Learning Native Wisdom, What Tradi tional Cultures Teach Us about Subsistence, Sustai nibility, and Spirtuality (2008).jpg

USA Books1 - Gary Holthaus - Learning Native Wisdom, What Tradition...out Subsistence, Sustainibility, and Spirtuality 2008.jpg

Scientific evidence has made it abundantly clear that the world's population can no longer continue its present rate of consuming and despoiling the planet's limited natural resources. Scholars, activists, politicians, and citizens worldwide are promoting the idea of sustainability, or systems and practices of living that allow a community to maintain itself indefinitely.Despite increased interest in sustainability, its popularity alone is insufficient to shift our culture and society toward more stable practices. Gary Holthaus argues that sustainability is achievable but is less a set of practices than the result of a healthy worldview. Learning Native Wisdom: Reflections on Subsistence, Sustainability, and Spirituality examines several facets of societies -- cultural, economic, agricultural, and political -- seeking insights into the ability of some societies to remain vibrant for thousands of years, even in extremely adverse conditions and climates. Holthaus looks to Eskimo and other Native American peoples of Alaska for the practical wisdom behind this way of living.Learning Native Wisdom explains why achieving a sustainable culture is more important than any other challenge we face today. Although there are many measures of a society's progress, Holthaus warns that only a shift away from our current culture of short-term abundance, founded on a belief in infinite economic growth, will represent true advancement. In societies that value the longevity of people, culture, and the environment, subsistence and spirituality soon become closely allied with sustainability.Holthaus highlights the importance of language as a reflection of shared cultural values, and he shows how our understanding of the very word subsistence illustrates his argument. In a culture of abundance, the term implies deprivation and insecurity. However, as Holthaus reminds us, "All cultures are subsistence cultures." Our post-Enlightenment consumer-based societies obscure or even deny our absolute dependence on soil, air, sunlight, and water for survival. This book identifies spirituality as a key component of meaningful cultural change, a concept that Holthaus defines as the recognition of the invisible connections between people, their neighbors, and their surroundings. For generations, native cultures celebrated and revered these connections, fostering a respect for past, present, and future generations and for the earth itself.Ultimately, Holthaus illustrates how spirituality and the concept of subsistence can act as powerful guiding forces on the path to global sustainability. He examines the perceptions of cultures far more successful at long-term survival than our own and describes how we might use their wisdom to overcome the sustainability crisis currently facing humanity.

Jefferson Humphries - The Puritan and the Cynic, M oralists and Theorists in French and American Lett ers (1987).jpg

USA Books1 - Jefferson Humphries - The Puritan and the Cynic, Moral...sts and Theorists in French and American Letters 1987.jpg

Why do Americans, and so often, American writers, profess moral sentiments and yet write so little in the traditionally "moralistic" genres of maxim and fable? What is the relation between "moral" concerns and literary theory? Can any sort of morality survive the supposed nihilism of deconstruction? Jefferson Humphries undertakes a discussion of questions like these through a comparative reading of the ways in which moral issues surface in French and American literature. Humphries takes issue with the "amoral" view of deconstruction espoused by many of its detractors, arguing that the debate between the theory's advocates and opponents comes down to two opposing literary and moral traditions. While the American tradition views morality as a rigid system capable of being enforced by injunctions along the lines of "Thou shalt" and "Thou shalt not," the French tradition conceives of morality as a function of a relentless and unsentimental pursuit of truth, and finally, an admission that "truth" is not a static thing, but rather an ongoing process of rigorous thought.

Ludwig Von Mises - The Free Market and its Enemies (2004).jpg

This is a "new" book by Ludwig von Mises, the first of a series of lecture transcripts drawn from careful notes taken by Bettina Bien Greaves in the summer of 1951. It features Mises in a role in which we do not usually find him, not as a writer but as a speaker of enormous erudition and power.

There are nine lectures in this book: Economics and its Opponents; Pseudo-Science and Historical Understanding; Acting Man and Economics; Marxism, Socialism, and Pseudo-Science; Capitalism and Human Progress; Money and Inflation; The Gold Standard: Its Importance and Restoration; Money, Credit, and the Business Cycle; and The Business Cycle and Beyond.

If one has doubts about the method by which this book came about, it only takes a quick glance to see that these must be very faithful renderings of what he said in his famous New York seminar. The brilliance, determination, and unique Misesian perspective are all here.

Plus, we find him commenting on matters one usually doesn't find in his others books, such as the impact that Plato had on the classical world, the place of Rousseau in history, the role of liberalism on the Continent as versus England, the impact of Poincare and Einstein, as well as passing comments on everything from banking debates of the 19th century as well as the role of ideology in modern life.

A thrilling aspect of the book is how one can almost hear Mises speaking as you read through the prose. The reader senses that he or she is right there in the room with Mises as professor and teacher, generously sharing his reflections on theory, history, and politics.

The children are full, interdependent members of the communities of which they are a part; they have a claim on our resources and our solidarity, as well as a right to participate in social life. Their participation easily becomes exploitation in the context of consumer culture. The tradition of the common good within Christianity moves communities toward practices of resistance and transformation to this culture in a spirit of solidarity with children.

J'Nell L. Pate - America's Historic Stockyards, Li vestock Hotels (2005).jpg

Livestock markets for the sale and distribution of meat developed as early as the days of colonial America. In the mid-nineteenth century, as westward expansion increased and railroads developed, stockyards companies formed in order to meet the demand of a growing nation. Contrary to markets, these companies were centrally organized and managed by a select few principal partners. America's Historic Stockyards: Livestock Hotels is an examination of such stockyards, from their early beginnings to their eventual decline. Stockyards helped to establish some of America's greatest cities. Early on the scene were stockyards in cities such as Cincinnati, otherwise known as "Porkopolis," and stockyards and packing powerhouse Chicago, considered the number one livestock market in the nation. Markets eventually expanded farther westward to California and Oregon. Other smaller markets made large contributions to the industry. The cow towns of Fort Worth and Wichita never reached the status of Chicago but had large livestock receipts. Fort Worth, for instance, became the largest horse and mule market in 1915, as World War I produced an increased demand for these animals. Meatpacking moguls known as the Big Four - Phillip Armour, Gustavus Swift, Nelson Morris, and Edward Cudahy - usually financed these growing markets, controlled the meatpacking business and, in turn, the stockyards companies. Although the members changed, this oligopoly remained intact for much of the duration of the stockyards industry. However, as railways gave way to highways, the markets declined and so too did these moguls. By the end of the twentieth century, almost every major market closed, bringing an end to the stockyard era. J'Nell Pate's examination of this era, the people, and the markets themselves recounts a significant part of the history of America's meat industry.

Susan Estrich - Soulless, Ann Coulter and the Righ t-Wing Church of Hate (2006).jpg

"A word to those of you out there who have yet to be offended by something I have written or said: Please be patient. I am working as fast as I can." -Ann Coulter, 2006
Is she ever!
Ever since the publication of her Clinton-bashing debut, High Crimes and Misdemeanors, right-wing fire-brand Ann Coulter has made herself one of the most talked-about figures in contemporary American life--and has done so by issuing a near-continuous barrage of insult and invective, which has been described as "shameless," "cruel," "shrill, bombastic, and mean-spirited," "grossly inappropriate," "hate speech." She has called the 9/11 widows "witches" and "harpies," referred to Muslims as "ragheads," called Al Gore a "total fag," and said that both New York Times editor Bill Keller and antiwar congressman Jack Murtha deserved to die. Yet with each new statement--and each new book launch--Coulter somehow manages to co-opt the media as a megaphone for her attacks, while emerging from the backlash miraculously unscathed.
Until now. With Soulless, political commentator Susan Estrich takes on Ann and the "Coulter culture" she has created, exposing how the pundit provocatrice has downgraded our political discourse with her irresponsible rhetoric, personal attacks, and slanderous asides. Trawling through Coulter's history of often-violent public statements, Estrich asks which are more cynical: the pundit and her headline-grabbing drive-by character assassinations, or the networks who happily bring her back for more. Soulless also casts a light on "the Anns," wannabes like Michelle Malkin and Glenn Beck, whose imitation Coulterisms coarsen our culture with every passing news cycle. And, most important, she challenges us--the readers, the voters--to remember that behind the huckster's rhetoric lurks a dangerous reactionary whose real agenda is wildly out of step with the American public.

Susan Okie - Fed Up!, Winning the War Against Chil dhood Obesity (2005).jpg

A new global epidemic is unfolding.
In only thirty years, rates of obesity around the world have skyrocketed. We read about it in the headlines and witness it in our neighborhoods. Overweight children are numerous and conspicuous. The world—and the U.S. in particular—is in crisis. Most scientists are convinced that this dangerous trend has been propelled by a lethal combination of modern living and human genetic vulnerability.
Children are proving to be the most vulnerable class of victims.
Once dismissed by the medical profession as a purely cosmetic problem, obesity represents an ominous health threat for our children. Obesity is now second only to smoking as a wholly preventable cause of death. Without early intervention, overweight children often become overweight adults—and we know that at any age, obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and depression, conditions that account for more than 300,000 deaths each year. In fact, today's kids may be the first generation of children to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
Knowledge is power—and it's time to fight back.
About 20% of all children are considered to be overweight—worldwide there are 22 million kids under five years old who are considered to be "fat." Eating too much unhealthy food coupled with getting too little physical activity accounts for a lot of what's making our children heavier. But that's not the whole story. New research is revealing startling evidence that isolates a number of factors that are involved in this dramatic increase in obesity rates.
Science you can trust—advice you can use.
It's time for all parents, teachers, public health officials, physicians, and community leaders to join forces and arm themselves with the best, most up-to-date information available to win the war against childhood obesity. FED UP! is just what the doctor ordered. Based in part on the prestigious Institute of Medicine's ground-breaking report on childhood obesity, this new book from family practice physician and former Washington Post journalist Susan Okie provides in-depth background on the issue. An artful combination of compelling case studies and clearly articulated science powerfully illustrates how serious and widespread the problem is. Only by understanding the factors that contribute to childhood obesity, can we fully appreciate the consequences of this epidemic—and take necessary steps toward positive change. Okie's honest, authoritative, science-based advice constitutes our best weapon in this critical battle for the health and well-being of our children.

In Indian Fights, J. W. Vaughn gives detailed accounts of the battles, careful descriptions of the battlefields, and interesting asides on the U.S. Army officers and soldiers serving in the West during and after the Civil War. This book provides answers to numerous questions that have long perplexed historians of the West.Using a metal detector, Vaughn uncovered cartridge cases, bullets, and other debris marking battle conditions, allowing him to reconstruct many little-known battles in detail. He analyzes a number of engagements that occurred around Cheyenne Fork, Wyoming, a popular camping place on the old Bozeman Trail, comparing his findings with the mass of conflicting testimonies, government records, newspaper accounts, and other sources covering the battles.

Robert J. Conley did not set out to chronicle the life of Cherokee medicine man John Little Bear. Instead, the medicine man came to him. Little Bear asked Conley to write down his story, to reveal to the world "what Indian medicine is really about." For Little Bear, as for the Cherokee ancestors who brought their traditions over the Trail of Tears to Indian Territory, the medicine is about helping people. Visitors from neighboring states and Mexico come to him, each one seeking help for a different kind of problem. Each seeker's story is presented here exactly as it was told to Conley.

Paul Sorensen - Moving Los Angeles, Short-Term Pol icy Options for Improving Transportation» (2008).jpg

The Los Angeles area has the most severe traffic congestion in the United States. Trends in many of the underlying causal factors suggest that congestion will continue to worsen in the coming years, absent significant policy intervention. Excessive traffic congestion detracts from quality of life, is economically wasteful and environmentally damaging, and exacerbates social-justice concerns. Finding efficient and equitable strategies for mitigating congestion will therefore serve many social goals. The authors recommend strategies for reducing congestion in Los Angeles County that could be implemented and produce significant improvements within about five years. To manage peak-hour auto travel, raise transportation revenue, improve alternative transportation options, and use existing capacity more efficiently, they recommend 10 primary strategies: improve signal control and timing; restrict curb parking on busy thoroughfares; implement paired one-way streets; promote ride-sharing, telecommuting, and flexible work schedules; develop a high-occupancy toll-lane network; vary curb-parking rates with demand, enforce the current parking cash-out law; promote deep-discount transit passes; expand bus rapid transit and bus-only lanes; and implement a regionally connected bicycle network. In addition, three recommendations may help, depending on the outcome of current events: evaluate arterial incident management, consider cordon congestion tolls, and levy local fuel taxes to raise transit revenue. Given that some of the recommendations may prove controversial, the authors also outline complementary strategies for building political consensus.
