This collection of essays demonstrates how the security of Americans is potentially threatened by individuals and governments who are engaged in the illicit trade in arms, drugs, and human beings in distant parts of the globe. More than just a threat to Americans, the essays underscore that these activities are often detrimental to the United States interests around the world due to the destabilizing impact that each activity can have on a nation or region. More revealing is how terrorists benefit from this illegal trade, generating critical sources of funding used for everything from recruiting to procurement of weapons and explosives of all types to extend and expand the scope of their struggle.
The scope of this work is truly global. Fourteen essays touch on prevailing problems from the Balkans to Southeast Asia and the Pacific; from Africa to the Caribbean, and more. In each essay, the authors explore a problem that not only has direct regional repercussions, but larger international ones as well. The essays present problems that result from these illegal activities as a global epidemic, not simply regionalized problems.

Anna R. Igra - Wives without Husbands, Marriage, D esertion, and Welfare in New York, 1900-1935 (200 6).jpg

Shedding new light on contemporary campaigns to encourage marriage among welfare recipients and to prosecute "deadbeat dads," Wives without Husbands traces the efforts of Progressive reformers to make "runaway husbands" support their families. Anna R. Igra investigates the interrelated histories of marriage and welfare policy in the early 1900s, revealing how reformers sought to make marriage the solution to women's and children's poverty.
Igra taps a rich trove of case files from the National Desertion Bureau, a Jewish husband-location agency, and follows hundreds of deserted women through the welfare and legal systems of early twentieth-century New York City. She integrates a broad range of topics, including Americanization as a gendered process, breadwinning as a measure of manhood, the relationship between consumer culture and social policy formation, the class dimensions of family law, and the Jewish community as a source of welfare policy innovation. Igra analyzes the history of antidesertion reform from its emergence in social policy debates, through the establishment of domestic relations courts, to Depression relief programs. She shows that early twentieth-century reformers, by attempting to make instrumental use of poor people's intimate relations, anticipated welfare policies in our own time that promote marriage as an answer to poverty.

David Ricardo Williams - Call in Pinkerton's, Amer ican Detectives at Work for Canada (1998).jpg

Soon after Allan Pinkerton established his legendary detective agency in the United States, Canadians began seeking their services. Call in Pinkerton's is the history of the agency's work on behalf of Canadian governments and police forces. During the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Pinkerton's operatives hunted legendary train robber Bill Miner in the woods of British Columbia, infiltrated German spy rings during World War I, and helped future prime minister John A. Macdonald to fend off the Fenian raids. They tracked down the Reno Brothers in Windsor, Ontario, and investigated labour unrest in Hamilton. The agency's detectives countered crimes all over Canada, particularly in the West and British Columbia. Pinkerton's activities went as far north as the Yukon, where fears were growing of an imminent invasion by a force of Americans from Alaska. Call in Pinkerton's is the first book to chronicle the agency's work on behalf of Canadian governments and police forces. This entertaining book provides accounts of actual Pinkerton's investigations while detailing the day-to-day activities of a private detective at work. Call in Pinkerton's is a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in crime and espionage.

Diana Butler Bass - Standing Against the Whirlwind , Evangelical Episcopalians in Nineteenth-Century America (1995).jpg

USA Books1 - Diana Butler Bass - Standing Against the Whirlwind, Ev...ical Episcopalians in Nineteenth-Century America 1995.jpg

Standing Against the Whirlwind is a history of the Evangelical party in the Episcopal Church in nineteenth-century America. A surprising revisionist account of the church's first century, it reveals the extent to which evangelical Episcopalians helped to shape the piety, identity, theology, and mission of the church. Using the life and career of one of the party's greatest leaders, Charles Pettit McIlvaine, the second bishop of Ohio, Diana Butler blends institutional history with biography to explore the vicissitudes and tribulations of evangelicals in a church that often seemed inhospitable to their version of the Gospel. This gracefully written narrative history of a neglected movement sheds light on evangelical religion within a particular denomination and broadens the interpretation of nineteenth-century American evangelicalism as a whole. In addition, it elucidates such wider cultural and religious issues as the meaning of millennialism and the nature of the crisis over slavery.

Gavin James Campbell - Music and the Making of a N ew South (2004).jpg

Startled by rapid social changes at the turn of the twentieth century, citizens of Atlanta wrestled with fears about the future of race relations, the shape of gender roles, the impact of social class, and the meaning of regional identity in a New South. Gavin James Campbell demonstrates how these anxieties were played out in Atlanta's popular musical entertainment.
Examining the period from 1890 to 1925, Campbell focuses on three popular musical institutions: the New York Metropolitan Opera (which visited Atlanta each year), the Colored Music Festival, and the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers' Convention. White and black audiences charged these events with deep significance, Campbell argues, turning an evening's entertainment into a struggle between rival claimants for the New South's soul. Opera, spirituals, and fiddling became popular not just because they were entertaining, but also because audiences found them flexible enough to accommodate a variety of competing responses to the challenges of making a New South.
Campbell shows how attempts to inscribe music with a single, public, fixed meaning were connected to much larger struggles over the distribution of social, political, cultural, and economic power. Attitudes about music extended beyond the concert hall to simultaneously enrich and impoverish both the region and the nation that these New Southerners struggled to create.

Heather Cox Richardson - West from Appomattox, The Reconstruction of America after the Civil War (20 07).jpg

The story of Reconstruction is not simply about the rebuilding of the South after the Civil War. Instead, the late nineteenth century defined modern America, as Southerners, Northerners, and Westerners gradually hammered out a national identity that united three regions into a country that could become a world power. Ultimately, the story of Reconstruction is about how a middle class formed in America and how its members defined what the nation would stand for, both at home and abroad, for the next century and beyond.
A sweeping history of the United States from the era of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, this engaging book stretches the boundaries of our understanding of Reconstruction. Historian Heather Cox Richardson ties the North and West into the post–Civil War story that usually focuses narrowly on the South, encompassing the significant people and events of this profoundly important era.
By weaving together the experiences of real individuals—from a plantation mistress, a Native American warrior, and a labor organizer to Andrew Carnegie, Julia Ward Howe, Booker T. Washington, and Sitting Bull—who lived during the decades following the Civil War and who left records in their own words, Richardson tells a story about the creation of modern America.

Jason Emerson - The Madness of Mary Lincoln (2007).jpg

In 2005, historian Jason Emerson discovered a steamer trunk formerly owned by Robert Todd Lincoln's lawyer and stowed in an attic for forty years. The trunk contained a rare find: twenty-five letters pertaining to Mary Todd Lincoln's life and insanity case, letters assumed long destroyed by the Lincoln family. Mary wrote twenty of the letters herself, more than half from the insane asylum to which her son Robert had her committed, and many in the months and years after.
The Madness of Mary Lincoln is the first examination of Mary Lincoln’s mental illness based on the lost letters, and the first new interpretation of the insanity case in twenty years. This compelling story of the purported insanity of one of America’s most tragic first ladies provides new and previously unpublished materials, including the psychiatric diagnosis of Mary’s mental illness and her lost will.
Emerson charts Mary Lincoln’s mental illness throughout her life and describes how a predisposition to psychiatric illness and a life of mental and emotional trauma led to her commitment to the asylum. The first to state unequivocally that Mary Lincoln suffered from bipolar disorder, Emerson offers a psychiatric perspective on the insanity case based on consultations with psychiatrist experts.
This book reveals Abraham Lincoln’s understanding of his wife’s mental illness and the degree to which he helped keep her stable. It also traces Mary’s life after her husband’s assassination, including her severe depression and physical ailments, the harsh public criticism she endured, the Old Clothes Scandal, and the death of her son Tad.
The Madness of Mary Lincoln is the story not only of Mary, but also of Robert. It details how he dealt with his mother’s increasing irrationality and why it embarrassed his Victorian sensibilities; it explains the reasons he had his mother committed, his response to her suicide attempt, and her plot to murder him. It also shows why and how he ultimately agreed to her release from the asylum eight months early, and what their relationship was like until Mary’s death.
This historical page-turner provides readers for the first time with the lost letters that historians had been in search of for eighty years.

John Phillip Reid - Contested Empire, Peter Skene Ogden and the Snake River Expeditions (2002).jpg

John Phillip Reid has authored several books and articles on legal aspects of the nineteenth-century North American fur trade, mainly involving the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), the best-documented fur-trading company. Here Reid examines Peter Skene Ogden's expeditions into the Snake River country between 1824 and 1828, during which time the "Oregon Country" was open to economic exploitation by both Britain and the United States under an 1818 joint occupation treaty. After the 1821 merger of the HBC and the Montreal-based North West Company, the "new" HBC under the aegis of Sir George Simpson attempted to secure and maintain dominance over the region. HBC policy called for stripping the Snake River country of beaver to discourage American trappers' incursions. The attempt to create a "fur desert" buffer zone is a well-known program, but Reid reinterprets its genesis and its success.

Lorraine Gates Schuyler - The Weight of Their Vote s, Southern Women and Political Leverage in the 19 20s (2006).jpg

USA Books1 - Lorraine Gates Schuyler - The Weight of Their Votes, S...uthern Women and Political Leverage in the 1920s 2006.jpg

After the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, hundreds of thousands of southern women went to the polls for the first time. In The Weight of Their Votes Lorraine Gates Schuyler examines the consequences this had in states across the South. She shows that from polling places to the halls of state legislatures, women altered the political landscape in ways both symbolic and substantive. Schuyler challenges popular scholarly opinion that women failed to wield their ballots effectively in the 1920s, arguing instead that in state and local politics, women made the most of their votes.
Schuyler explores get-out-the-vote campaigns staged by black and white women in the region and the response of white politicians to the sudden expansion of the electorate. Despite the cultural expectations of southern womanhood and the obstacles of poll taxes, literacy tests, and other suffrage restrictions, southern women took advantage of their voting power, Schuyler shows. Black women mobilized to challenge disfranchisement and seize their right to vote. White women lobbied state legislators for policy changes and threatened their representatives with political defeat if they failed to heed women's policy demands. Thus, even as southern Democrats remained in power, the social welfare policies and public spending priorities of southern states changed in the 1920s as a consequence of woman suffrage.

Victoria E. Bynum - The Free State of Jones, Missi ssippi's Longest Civil War (2001).jpg

Between late 1863 and mid-1864, an armed band of Confederate deserters battled Confederate cavalry in the Piney Woods region of Jones County, Mississippi. Calling themselves the Knight Company after their captain, Newton Knight, they set up headquarters in the swamps of the Leaf River, where, legend has it, they declared the Free State of Jones.
The story of the Jones County rebellion is well known among Mississippians, and debate over whether the county actually seceded from the state during the war has smoldered for more than a century. Adding further controversy to the legend is the story of Newt Knight's interracial romance with his wartime accomplice, Rachel, a slave. From their relationship there developed a mixed-race community that endured long after the Civil War had ended, and the ambiguous racial identity of their descendants confounded the rules of segregated Mississippi well into the twentieth century.
Victoria Bynum traces the origins and legacy of the Jones County uprising from the American Revolution to the modern civil rights movement. In bridging the gap between the legendary and the real Free State of Jones, she shows how the legend--what was told, what was embellished, and what was left out--reveals a great deal about the South's transition from slavery to segregation; the racial, gender, and class politics of the period; and the contingent nature of history and memory.

USA Books1 - R. Barry Lewis, Charles Stout - Mississippian Towns an...d Spaces, Searching for an Architectural Grammar 2002.jpg

Architecture is the most visible physical manifestation of human culture. The built environment envelops our lives and projects our distinctive regional and ethnic identities to the world around us. Archaeology and architecture find common theoretical ground in their perspectives on the homes, spaces, and communities that people create for themselves. In this volume, prominent archaeologists examine the architectural design spaces of Mississippian towns and mound centers of the eastern United States. The diverse Mississippian societies, which existed between A.D. 900 and 1700, created some of the largest and most complex Native American archaeological sites in the United States. The dominant architectural feature shared by these communities was one or more large plazas, each of which was often flanked by buildings set on platform mounds.

Amitai Etzioni - The Spirit of Community, Rights, Responsibilities and the Communitarian Agenda (199 5).jpg

The Spirit of Community will be of interest to those who seek a better understanding of the role of the public interest in contemporary society, and also to those seeking a foundation for civic (and environmental) responsibility. This work is divided into three parts, an introduction, and an appendix. The introduction presents a four-point Communitarian agenda, aimed at "correcting the current imbalance between rights and responsibilities." This agenda is located within the larger Communitarian project of moral reconstruction.

Section one addresses the issue of moral reconstruction. During the 1960s many moral traditions, social values and institutions were challenged or rejected. However, a new core of values has not arisen to fill the void. The "moral confusion" left in the wake of the sixties has eroded the "notion of a shared community or public interest" and hence has encouraged fragmentation and conflict within society. Chapter one emphasizes the link between rights and obligations. Chapters two and three focus on the need to revalue children, and the importance of providing a moral education in shared values. Shared values arise from strong communities, and so chapters four and five discuss ways to rebuild local and national communities.

Section two explores this paradox: contemporary Americans have both a "strong sense of entitlement" and a "weak sense of obligation to the local and national community." We claim too many rights while recognizing too few responsibilities. Chapter six suggests a strategy for promoting civil responsibilities while avoiding authoritarian state control, focusing on responsibilities toward public safety and public health. Chapter seven further illustrates this strategy by describing non-legal remedies to the problem of hate speech.

Section three argues that the current political dominance of special interest groups subverts the public interest. Chapter eight diagnoses the situation, and describes the detrimental influence of political action committees (PACs) on the democratic process. Chapter nine outlines a response to the problem, and calls for a massive social movement to implement these reforms. The Communitarian platform is included in appendix.
