Humor is sometimes a serious business, especially the humor of Benjamin Franklin, a master at revealing the human condition through comedy. For the country’s bicentennial, Reader’s Digest named Franklin "Man of the Year" for embodying the characteristics we admire most about ourselves as Americans—humor, irony, energy, and fresh insight.
Recreating Franklin’s words in the way that his contemporaries would have read and understood them, Paul M. Zall chronicles Franklin’s use (and abuse) of humor for commercial, diplomatic, and political purposes. Dedicated to the uniquely appealing and enduring humor of Benjamin Franklin, Zall lovingly samples Franklin’s apologues on the necessity of living reasonably even when life’s circumstances may seem absurd.

Paul T. Miller - The Postwar Struggle for Civil Ri ghts, African Americans in San Francisco, 1945-197 5 (2009).jpg

USA Books1 - Paul T. Miller - The Postwar Struggle for Civil Rights...s, African Americans in San Francisco, 1945-1975 2009.jpg

The war industries associated with World War II brought unparalleled employment opportunities for African Americans in San Francisco, a city whose African American population grew by over 650% between 1940 and 1945. With this population increase came an increase in racial discrimination directed at African Americans, primarily in the employment and housing sectors. In San Francisco, most African Americans were effectively barred from renting or buying homes in all but a few neighborhoods and, except for the well-educated and lucky, employment opportunities were open in near-entry levels for white-collar positions or in unskilled and semi-skilled blue-collar positions. As San Francisco's African American population expanded, civil rights groups formed coalitions to picket and protest, thereby effectively expanding job opportunities and opening the housing market for African American San Franciscans. This book describes and explains some of the obstacles and triumphs faced and achieved in areas such as housing, employment, education and civil rights. It reaches across disciplines from African American studies and history into urban studies and sociology.

Peter S. Onuf - Jefferson's Empire, The Language o f American Nationhood (2000).jpg

Thomas Jefferson believed that the American Revolution was a transformative moment in the history of political civilization. He hoped that his own efforts as a founding statesman and theorist would help construct a progressive and enlightened order for the new American nation that would be a model and inspiration for the world. Peter S. Onuf's new book traces Jefferson's vision of the American future to its roots in his idealized notions of nationhood and empire. Onuf's unsettling recognition that Jefferson's famed egalitarianism was elaborated in an imperialist context yields strikingly original interpretations of our national identity and our ideas of race, of westward expansion and the Civil War, and of American global dominance in the twentieth century. Jefferson's vision of an American "empire for liberty" was modeled on a British prototype. But as a consensual union of selfgoverning republics without a metropolis, Jefferson's American empire would be free of exploitation by a corrupt imperial ruling class. It would avoid the cycle of war and destruction that had characterized the European balance of power. The Civil War cast in high relief the tragic limitations of Jefferson's political vision. After the Union victory, as the reconstructed nation-state developed into a world power, dreams of the United States as an ever-expanding empire of peacefully co-existing states quickly faded from memory. Yet even as the antebellum federal union disintegrated, a Jeffersonian nationalism, proudly conscious of America's historic revolution against imperial domination, grew up in its place. In Onuf's view, Jefferson's quest to define a new American identity also shaped his ambivalentconceptions of slavery and Native American rights. His Revolutionary fervor led him to see Indians as "merciless savages" who ravaged the frontiers at the British king's direction, but when those frontiers were pacified, a more benevolent Jefferson encouraged these same Indians to embrace republican values. African American slaves, by contrast, constituted an unassimilable captive nation, unjustly wrenched from its African homeland. His great panacea: colonization. Jefferson's ideas about race reveal the limitations of his conception of American nationhood. Yet, as Onuf strikingly documents, Jefferson's vision of a republican empire -- a regime of peace, prosperity, and union without coercion -- continues to define and expand the boundaries of American national identity.

Robert C. Lee - The Canada Company and the Huron T ract, 1826-1853, Personalities, Profits and Politi cs (2004).jpg

USA Books1 - Robert C. Lee - The Canada Company and the Huron Trac..., 1826-1853, Personalities, Profits and Politics 2004.jpg

The Canada Company was responsible for the opening and settling of over two million acres of land in Upper Canada. The author focuses his attention on the extensive parcel of land on the shores of Lake Huron that became known as the Huron Tract. His comprehensive research explores the underlying forces leading to the formation of the Company, the intriguing mix of people charged with responsibilities for the Company and the overall impact of its operations, leading to its present-day legacy. The politics of the day, coupled with diverse and colourful personalities -- such as John Galt, Tiger Dunlop, William Allan, Thomas Mercer Jones, Frederick Widder, Sir Peregrine Maitland, Bishop Macdonnell and Bishop Strachan -- introduce an interesting blend of vision, intrigue, mischief and day-to-day survival strategies that make for compelling reading. Add to this the shareholders' perspective of the Company versus the settlers' perspective and you have a fascinating glimpse of pioneer conditions. Included are descriptions of early towns such as Guelph and Goderich, as well as background on the Huron Tract township names.

Robert E. Gallman - American Economic Growth and S tandards of Living before the Civil War (1993).jpg

This benchmark volume addresses the debate over the effects of early industrialization on standards of living during the decades before the Civil War. Its contributors demonstrate that the aggregate antebellum economy was growing faster than any other large economy had grown before.
Despite the dramatic economic growth and rise in income levels, questions remain as to the general quality of life during this era. Was the improvement in income widely shared? How did economic growth affect the nature of work? Did higher levels of income lead to improved health and longevity? The authors address these questions by analyzing new estimates of labor force participation, real wages, and productivity, as well as of the distribution of income, height, and nutrition.

Steven A. Riess - Encyclopedia of Major League Bas eball Clubs [Two Volumes] (2006).jpg

From exploits on the field, to machinations in the front office, to data on the cities where they play, the Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball Clubs presents the team history of each of the MLB teams. Intelligent, in-depth essays provide social and economic histories of each club that go beyond the recounting of team glories or failures year by year. Team origins, annual campaigns, and players and managers all figure into the story, but so do owners, financiers, politicians, neighborhoods and fans. Teams are also looked at as business enterprises, with special attention given to labor issues like the reserve clause and free agency, as well as stadium construction and financing. Social and political issues are covered as well, including racism and integration, ethnic makeup of fans and players, gambling, liquor sales, and Sunday play. National events, like World War I, World War II, the Great Depression and the Cold War, and their impact on the national pastime, are also brought into the picture where they are relevant. Media coverage and broadcasting rights are discussed, as is the great influence the flood of media money has had on the sport. As America's sport, baseball reflects not just our ideas and beliefs about competition, it also reflects our national and regional identities. Readers will be able to find useful information about:
Important players, managers, owners Community relations/charity work Business and labor issues (television income, free agency) Race relations Baseball/Sports economics (including stadium construction, team relocations) Teams in local and national culture (Fenway Park, Wrigley Field as local icons, Yankees as a national team) Every essay is signed, and concludes with suggested readings and a bibliography. The work is illustrated, has a comprehensive bibliography, and is thoroughly indexed.

World Religions - Paula R. Hart - Native American Religions (2009).jpg

Native American religions consist of a set of basic attitudes that relate people to their natural surroundings. Ceremonies that include stories, songs, chants, magic formulas, and prayers are intended to help the faithful focus on the essential, yet often ignored, things in life, such as the forces of nature, natural resources, and birth and death. "Native American Religions, Third Edition" presents the history of the Native American religions, starting from their roots as tribal religions, and then details the detrimental effects of European colonization, the annihilation of the Native Americans that threatened the religions, and their sudden restoration in the 20th century. The coverage includes ethical and religious principles that guide believers to living a harmonious and balanced life; the influence of geography and nature on Native American beliefs; ceremonies and rituals that are an intrinsic part of the lives of tribe members; the relationship between Native American religions and Christianity; the death of Sitting Bull and the Wounded Knee Massacre; and, a shift from the age of 'Vanishing Americans' to the struggle to lobby for Native American rights.

Marc Jarsulic - Anatomy of a Financial Crisis, A R eal Estate Bubble, Runaway Credit Markets, and Reg ulatory Failure (2010).jpg

USA Books1 - Marc Jarsulic - Anatomy of a Financial Crisis, A Real ..., Runaway Credit Markets, and Regulatory Failure 2010.jpg

An in-depth look at the origins and development of the current financial crisis, from an economist and Washington insider. The author explains how a wide array of financial institutions -- including mortgage banks, commercial banks, and investment banks -- created a credit bubble that supported nonprime mortgage lending and helped to inflate house prices. The near-collapse is shown to be the result of multiple regulatory failures and reckless decisions by financial firms that were less sophisticated than they appeared. The author concludes that significant changes in financial market regulation, especially with respect to firms that are “too big to fail,” will be needed to prevent future crises and the damage they cause.

Jens O. Parsons - Dying of Money, Lessons of the G reat German and American Inflations (1974).jpg

Most of us have at least a general idea of what we think ination is. Ination is the state of affairs in which prices go up. Ination is an old, old story. Ination is almost as ancient as money is, and money is almost as ancient as man himself.
It was probably not long after the earliest cave man of the Stone Age fashioned his rst stone spearhead to kill boars with, perhaps thirty or forty thousand years ago, that he began to use boar's teeth or something of the sort as counters for trading spearheads and caves with neighboring clans. That was money. Anything like those boar's teeth that had an accepted symbolic value for trading which was greater than their intrinsic value for using was true money.

Keith N. Hylton - Antitrust Law and Economics (201 0).jpg

`In this outstanding new book Professor Keith Hylton and his collaborators examine what antitrust law has become over the past ten years, a time in which economic analysis has become its undisputed core. What has become of the old antitrust doctrine, what are the new issues for the immediate future? This book brings together the leading experts to examine this silent revolution at the core of US domestic policy.'
- Mark Grady, UCLA School of Law, US
`Hylton's Antitrust Law and Economics brings together many of the best authors writing in antitrust today. Their essays range widely, covering proof of agreement under the Sherman Act, group boycotts, monopolization and essential facilities, tying and other vertical restraints, and merger policy. The writing is clear, accessible but still technically sophisticated and comprehensive. This book represents the best in contemporary antitrust scholarship, by authors who understand and are able to communicate the centrality of economic analysis to antitrust. No antitrust lawyer, serious antitrust student, or antitrust economist should be without this book.'
- Herbert Hovenkamp, University of Iowa College of Law, US
This comprehensive book provides an extensive overview of the major topics of antitrust law from an economic perspective. Its in-depth treatment and analysis of both the law and economics of antitrust is presented via a collection of interconnected original essays. The contributing authors are among the most influential scholars in antitrust, with a rich diversity of backgrounds. Their entries cover, amongst other issues, predatory pricing, essential facilities, tying, vertical restraints, enforcement, mergers, market power, monopolization standards, and facilitating practices.
This well-organized and substantial work will be invaluable to professors of American antitrust law and European competition law, as well as students specializing in competition law. It will also be an important reference for professors and graduate students of economics and business.

Eric Nas - Manhattan Skyscrapers (2005).jpg

New York City is a lot of things, but most of all it's a city of skyscrapers. From the cake-icing Gothic detailing of the Woolworth Building to the shimmering Art Deco of the Chrysler Building, tall buildings make Manhattan the ideal image of a city. Manhattan Skyscrapers was the first book to document the highs and highers of the Big Apple's search for the sky. With its authoritative text by New York Times contributor Eric Nash, newly commissioned photos by Norman McGrath, and archival images of the city, the book became the reference work on the skyline. The city skyline changed dramatically on September 11, 2001, when its southern anchors, the World Trade Center towers, were attacked and destroyed. While mourning their loss, the city has continued to carry on its tradition of building.

The new structures that have arrived-the green skyscraper of the Condé Nast Building, The Donald's soaring residential Trump World Tower, the hopeful Freedom Tower planned for Ground Zero-prove that the New York attitude still thrives. This new edition of Manhattan Skyscrapers covers ten new buildings including the glittering new LVMH tower and represents seventy-five historical structures, with such recent renovations as Louis Sullivan's Bayard-Condit Building. A new introduction by Skyscraper Museum Director Carol Willis adds insight into the city in the 21st century. This book is a must for both the serious student of architecture and the casual collector of all things New York.

Helene Henderson - Patriotic Holidays of the Unite d States (2005).jpg

In her thorough text, Henderson defines patriotic holidays as those dealing with aspects of democratic civic rights, responsibilities, and values consistent with the ideals laid out in the nations founding documents. Some of these days are legal public holidays, while others, such as 9/11, also called Patriot Day, are simply public observances. The book begins with a fascinating look at patriotism. Along with several definitions and views on it, the author explores different symbols of the U.S., including those of political parties, the cornucopia, the eagle, and the flag. She then considers each holiday in alphabetical order, describing any customs, songs, and foods associated with it; the history behind the observance; and a sampling of activities and observances around the country. Each discussion ends with a list of related Web sites and a bibliography. Pull quotes, sidebars, and fact boxes are found throughout, as are black-and-white photos and reproductions. The volume also contains almost 100 pages of useful primary documents related to holidays, including The Mayflower Compact; The Declaration of Independence; flag laws; and excerpts from diaries, letters, and speeches. Readers are sure to gain insight into the history of the U.S., for the history of a nations holidays is certainly a history of the country.
