Un Jeu Brutal (1983) aka A Brutal Game.avi

Brisseau's bleak tale takes the most unsympathetic character imaginable, the child killer Tessier (Cremer), and pleads his case. Tessier, a scientist, has a rebellious handicapped adolescent daughter. His treatment of his daughter is strict to the point of sadism. None the less, Tessier evokes pity as much as revulsion. He's a shy, taciturn figure who has lost his moral bearings, and Brisseau tells us at the outset that he is the murderer. Despite a creaky plot, this deeply unsettling character study is anchored by Cremer's brooding performance, and freshened by the Buñuel-like surrealist touches (the handicapped daughter could be a younger version of Tristana) and the director's resolute avoidance of serial-killer movie conventions.

For Nami, life is going pretty good. Her job as a nurse is very fulfilling, and her boyfriend Kenji is doing well as a photographer of nude women.

Life for Muraki isn't so hot. Implicated in an embezzlement scandal, he has been fired from his job, and is now on the run from the investors who lost money to him. He decides to leave Tokyo and start a new life.

Angel Guts Nami (1979).avi

Nami is a reporter for "The Woman", a the second largest women's magazine in Japan. She is working on a series of articles profiling rape victims and what happens to them after the event. While her articles are very popular with the public, her interview subjects are not always as grateful. As far as Nami is concerned, her articles are going to help women, even though she shows no real sympathy to the victims.

While she is doing research on one of her subjects, Nami runs into Muraki, a reporter for an underground magazine. He warns her that if she goes in too deep, she may find herself too far gone. She thinks he is trying to scoop her story, and initially blows him off. However, as she looks into his past, she discovers a dark truth about Muraki.

Can someone who constantly exposed to such vile and deprave acts not be affected by what they see? Can one who has been raped ever truly find happienss? Nami is about to find out.

Now here's a real oddity : a one time only directorial effort from highly regarded Japanese author Masuo Ikeda, with Italian co-funding in order to sidestep strict as well as erratic Nipponese censorship laws (to little avail as it would turn out), shot superbly (by Mario Vulpiani who photographed the underrated giallo THE BLOODSTAINED SHADOW and Stuart Gordon's delirious CASTLE FREAK) on the ever photogenic Greek isles. Protagonist is a handsome young artist named Nikos (Claudio Aliotti from Lucio Fulci's GHOSTS OF SODOM) who lives in a boarding house run by love-starved divorcée Elda (Olga Karlatos, Mrs. One Eye from Fulci's ZOMBI 2) and her retarded daughter who has a serious crush on the womanizing painter. This initially exploitable character is played surprisingly (and indelibly) well by teen actress Sandra Dobrigna - billed here as Sandra Dobri - who you may recall as the little girl from the opening scenes of THE PYJAMA GIRL CASE. Her mere presence in what is essentially a sex film (relax, she's nowhere to be seen once textile is shed) gives a disturbing edge to this hothouse melodrama. Well, Ikeda IS Japanese, after all. The film's most explicit (though not hardcore) scenes involve Nikos and a pair of Swedish tourists, smoldering brunette Stefania Casini (from Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA) and a glowingly youthful, soon to become porn icon Ilona Staller a.k.a. la Cicciolina herself! These two exquisite women share the movie's single most memorable carnal encounter as they languidly make love in a very white bedroom setting as Nikos is forced to watch from the sidelines. Ennio Morricone's plaintive score adds just the right touch of melancholy and foreboding doom this somewhat overwrought but impossible to forget miniature Greek tragedy demands.
