Anna Whitelock - Mary Tudor, Princess, Bastard, Qu een (2010).jpg

Queen Mary Tudor of England (who reigned from 1553 to 1558) will forever live in history as “Bloody Mary,” for the number of Protestants put to the flames during the reign of this unbendingly Catholic monarch. In this inviting biography, British historian Whitelock presents a more favorable queen. The eldest child of Henry VIII, Mary was initially his pampered only child, but despair over the lack of a male heir led him through a series of wives and the relegation of Mary as a bastard. As a Catholic, she experienced difficult times during the English Reformation and particularly during the brief reign of the ultra-Protestant Edward VI, her brother. Her fight to achieve the throne as Edward's rightful heir is seen here as showcasing in full color Mary's mettle: “her triumph over the other contestants to the throne was one of the most surprising events of the sixteenth century.” The author sees survivalism in her subject, where other historians have seen only inflexibility and self-righteousness.

Arnold Krammer - War Crimes, Genocide, and the Law , A Guide to the Issues (2010).jpg

The issue of government-sanctioned torture is very much a part of today's headlines, but it is nothing new. In 1915, nearly 800,000 Armenians were murdered by the Turks and no one was punished. The same number of people perished in the 1994 Rwanda genocide—in just 100 days. In four years, between 1975 and 1979, Cambodia's Pol Pot regime was responsible for the deaths of just under two million people.

Egypt Exploration Society - An Atlas of Ancient Eg ypt (1894).jpg

The Egypt Exploration Fund was founded in 1882 by Amelia Ann Blanford Edwards (1831-1892), author and Egyptologist, with the assistance of Sir Erasmus Wilson (1809-1884) and Reginald Stuart Poole (1832-1895). The Fund was incorporated under the Companies Act in 1888, and changed its name to the Egypt Exploration Society in 1919. Particularly in its earlier years it had close though informal connections with the British Museum, where Poole and other leading members of the Fund were curators, and with University College London, where Miss Edwards established the first English chair of Egyptian archaeology and philology. The Society and its library rented various premises until it acquired its present quarters in Doughty Mews in 1968.

The records of the Society have been carefully preserved. Along with minutes and accounts there are papers relating to subscriptions, to the Society’s publications (particularly the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology) and to events such as exhibitions and lectures. Of particular note are the papers covering the activities of the Fund down to 1918; letters mainly of the inter-War period from such eminent Egyptologists as Sir Alan Gardiner, TE Peet, FL Griffith and Sir Harold Idris Bell; and detailed records of expeditions to and excavations in Egypt and the Sudan, including photographs, maps and drawings. The collection also includes personal papers of Amelia Edwards and Prof WB Emery, and the records of the Society for the Preservation of Monuments of Ancient Egypt, transferred to the EEF when it was wound up in 1910.

The Commission is grateful to the Society for the opportunity to note the contents of this interesting and valuable archive. It was examined by RJ Olney and AP Lewis on 14 February 2000, in connection with research for the Commission’s forthcoming guide to the Papers of British Antiquaries and Historians, and they would like to record their own thanks to Dr Patricia Spencer and her colleagues for their help and hospitality on that occasion.

Kristina A. Curry Rogers, Jeffrey A. Wilson - The Sauropods, Evolution and Paleobiology (2005).jpg

Sauropod dinosaurs were the largest animals ever to walk the earth, and they represent a substantial portion of vertebrate biomass and biodiversity during the Mesozoic Era. The story of sauropod evolution is told in an extensive fossil record of skeletons and footprints that span the globe and 150 million years of earth history. This generously illustrated volume is the first comprehensive scientific summary of sauropod evolution and paleobiology. The contributors explore sauropod anatomy, detail its variations, and question the myth that life at large size led to evolutionary stagnation and eventual replacement by more "advanced" herbivorous dinosaurs. Chapters address topics such as the evolutionary history and diversity of sauropods; methods for creating three-dimensional reconstructions of their skeletons; questions of sauropod herbivory, tracks, gigantism, locomotion, reproduction, growth rates, and more. This book, together with the recent surge in sauropod discoveries around the world and taxonomic revisions of fragmentary genera, will shed new light on "nature's greatest extravagances."

World War II - Countdown to Catastrophe (2010).jpg

Gr 6-9-These six volumes, each of which could stand alone, make a cohesive set when read together. The information is accurate and the volumes are liberally illustrated with many rarely seen black-and-white photos. Some color images enhance the texts. Much of the content will likely require some prior knowledge for complete understanding. Sidebars give additional political, biographical, and historical information. The format is attractive with one-quarter to full-page photos, but the captions are mostly redundant. Almost every page needlessly pulls one sentence out of the text and repeats it on the same page in a blue stylized font. Unfortunately, the entire set is plagued with typographical errors, incomplete sentences, and repeated textual phrases. Each volume contains several color maps, but they seem to be too few or misplaced, and are too cluttered, making it difficult at times to find the places mentioned in the texts. Each title concludes with a self-contained time line. The material as presented is acceptable, but the mechanical glitches make these books additional, rather than first, purchases.

Hayden White - Metahistory, The Historical Imagina tion in Nineteenth-Century Europe (1975).jpg

Metahistory is something more than a study of philosophies of history (although it is that too, and no doubt the most important work in the field since Collingwood): it is also a methodological manifesto, a more sustained argument for a deep-figural hermeneutic than has been worked out anywhere before now.

Marcia L.Colish - Medieval Foundations of the West ern Intellectual Tradition, 400-1400 (1999).jpg

This magisterial book provides an analysis of the course of Western intellectual history between A.D. 400 and 1400. The book is arranged in two parts: the first surveys the comparative modes of thought and varying success of Byzantine, Latin-Christian, and Muslim cultures, and the second takes the reader from the twelfth-century revival of learning to the high Middle Ages and beyond, the period in which the vibrancy of Western intellectual culture enabled it to stamp its imprint well beyond the frontiers of Christendom.

James H. Swet - Recreating Africa, Culture, Kinshi p, and Religion in the African-Portuguese World, 1 441-1770 (2006).jpg

All History - James H. Swet - Recreating Africa, Culture, Kinship, ...igion in the African-Portuguese World, 1441-1770 2006.jpg

Exploring the cultural lives of African slaves in the early colonial Portuguese world, with an emphasis on the more than 1 million Central Africans who survived the journey to Brazil, James Sweet lifts a curtain on their lives as Africans rather than as incipient Brazilians. Focusing first on the cultures of Central Africa from which the slaves came--Ndembu, Imbangala, Kongo, and others--Sweet identifies specific cultural rites and beliefs that survived their transplantation to the African-Portuguese diaspora, arguing that they did not give way to immediate creolization in the New World but remained distinctly African for some time.

E. J. Brill - Origins, The Ancient Near Eastern Ba ckground of Some Modern Western Institutions (199 6).jpeg

Origins is the first fully comprehensive study of the debt owed by modern western culture to Ancient Near Eastern civilization - a debt touched upon by standard histories of the Ancient Near East but never as systematically investigated as here by William W. Hallo. The author, who has devoted a lifetime to the study of the Ancient Near East, places the emphasis on the way the Ancient Near East continues to shape our Western world. He takes an in-depth look at the ancient origins of many institutions that are most essential to contemporary life - and most often taken for granted.

Mark Wasserman - Everyday Life and Politics in Nin eteenth Century Mexico, Men, Women, and War (2000).jpg

In this new and masterful synthesis, Wasserman shows the link between ordinary men and women-preoccupied with the demands of feeding, clothing, and providing shelter-and the elites' desire for a stable political order and an expanding economy. The three key figures of nineteenth-century Mexico-Antonio López de Santa Ana, Benito Juárez, and Porfirio Díaz-are engagingly reinterpreted. But the emphasis in this book is on the struggle of the common people to retain control over their everyday lives. Concerns central to village life were the appointment of police officials, imposition of taxes on Indians, the trustworthiness of local priests, and changes inland ownership. Communities often followed their leaders into one political camp or another-and even into war-out of loyalty.

Ros Ballaster - Fabulous Orients, Fictions of the East in England 1662–1785 (2005).jpg

Narrative moves. Stories migrate from one culture to another, over vast distances sometimes, but their path is often difficult to trace and obscured by time. Fabulous Orients looks at the traffic of narrative between Orient and Occident in the eighteenth century, and challenges the assumption that has dominated since the publication of Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) that such traffic is always one-way. Eighteenth-century readers in the West came to draw their mental maps of oriental territories and distinctions between them from their experience of reading tales "from" the Orient.

Roderick Cavaliero - Ottomania, The Romantics and the Myth of the Islamic Orient (2010).jpg

"Romanticism had its roots in fantasy and fed on myth." So Roderick Cavaliero introduces the nineteenth-century European Romantic obsession with the Orient. Cavaliero brings on a rich cast of leading Romantic writers, artists, musicians and travellers, including Beckford, Byron, Shelley, Walter Scott, Pierre Loti, Thomas Moore, Rossini, Eugene Delacroix, Thackeray and Disraeli, who luxuriated in the exotic sights, sounds, literature and mythology of the Orient - the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.

Cavaliero analyzes the Romantic vision of the Orient from Ottoman Turkey, through the Middle East, including Egypt and Persia, to the Vale of Kashmir - fascination with the exotic Orient mixed with distaste for despotic rule. The Romantics saw the Ottoman Empire as the feebler successor to the huge and invincible military state that threatened Europe in previous centuries; and the Ottoman Sultan as an absolute ruler living in distant splendor, with power of life and death over his people, stifling any national and democratic aspiration that might undermine his empire. But dislike of Oriental despotism could be overlaid by the frisson of oriental luxury, especially as the Ottoman Sultans were also heirs to the Caliphate of the iconic Harun ar Rashid in the fabulous Arabian Nights Entertainments - tales hugely popular in Europe and symbolizing timeless Eastern luxury. Dualism was fundamental to Romantic vision - the arch-romantic Byron wrote of "virgins soft as the roses they twine" in his Turkish Tales but fought for his romantic vision of Greek national independence.

Cavaliero’s Ottomania will delight all readers interested in tales of the Orient and the literature of the Romantic movement - a rich treasure-house of poets, novelists and travelers.

Charles Kupchan - How Enemies Become Friends, The Sources of Stable Peace (2010).jpg

Is the world destined to suffer endless cycles of conflict and war? Can rival nations become partners and establish a lasting and stable peace? How Enemies Become Friends provides a bold and innovative account of how nations escape geopolitical competition and replace hostility with friendship. Through compelling analysis and rich historical examples that span the globe and range from the thirteenth century through the present, foreign policy expert Charles Kupchan explores how adversaries can transform enmity into amity--and he exposes prevalent myths about the causes of peace.

Kupchan contends that diplomatic engagement with rivals, far from being appeasement, is critical to rapprochement between adversaries. Diplomacy, not economic interdependence, is the currency of peace; concessions and strategic accommodation promote the mutual trust needed to build an international society. The nature of regimes matters much less than commonly thought: countries, including the United States, should deal with other states based on their foreign policy behavior rather than on whether they are democracies. Kupchan demonstrates that similar social orders and similar ethnicities, races, or religions help nations achieve stable peace. He considers many historical successes and failures, including the onset of friendship between the United States and Great Britain in the early twentieth century, the Concert of Europe, which preserved peace after 1815 but collapsed following revolutions in 1848, and the remarkably close partnership of the Soviet Union and China in the 1950s, which descended into open rivalry by the 1960s.

In a world where conflict among nations seems inescapable, How Enemies Become Friends offers critical insights for building lasting peace.
